Combat-robot safety is a layered system: protect people with task-appropriate PPE, restrain every dangerous weapon outside the arena, provide a fast external shutdown, prevent unintended movement during handling and testing, and pass the event’s inspection. The exact hardware and procedures depend on the organizer, weight class, robot design and season. NHRL’s 2026 rules, Combat Robotics Out West’s September 2026 specifications and the historical 2022 BattleBots rulebook illustrate those differences; they are not one universal standard.
Start with the event rulebook, not a shopping list
A combat robot is safe only when its people, machine and operating procedure are controlled together. A pair of safety glasses cannot make an unsecured spinner safe, and a weapon lock cannot compensate for careless tool use. Before fabricating, identify the exact event, season and class, then download its current rules and inspection checklist. Ask the event’s safety staff about any design that is ambiguous, unusual or hazardous.
Rules change. NHRL’s page is labeled for 2026, while Combat Robotics Out West (C.R.O.W.) identifies its construction specifications as the September 2026 version. BattleBots’ cited tournament rules are from 2022 and are useful only as a historical example of formal technical inspection. Do not treat an older rulebook as permission for a future event.

| When is a weapon restraint needed? | A weapon lock is generally required while the weapon system and batteries are installed; staff may direct removal in limited situations. | A clearly visible, high-visibility lock outside the arena must prevent harmful weapon motion. The weapon pin must be in place when weapon power is applied during the power-on procedure. | Design a restraint that the named organizer accepts; do not assume one pin or lock works for every weapon. |
| How is the robot shut down? | Inspection checks switch or removable-link operation and fail-safes. | An externally accessible manual disconnect or switch must deactivate drive and weapons in under 15 seconds and cannot be obstructed by the weapon. | Put the disconnect where officials can reach it without entering a weapon’s path. |
| Where may testing occur? | “All robot weapon and drive testing must be done in a test box.” A narrow wheels-up exception applies when a second dedicated weapon switch is fitted. | Outside an arena or official test area, the robot must be raised or blocked so wheels or legs cannot cause movement if it activates. | Use the venue’s designated test area and follow its exception rules exactly. |
| Restricted systems | Design approval is required for restricted systems; teams are asked to begin early. | Not stated in the cited construction specification. | Disclose unusual weapons and hazards before arrival; another organizer may have a different process. |
The table shows why “compliant combat-robot safety gear” is not a universal category. A component can be physically strong yet fail an event’s visibility, access, timing or removal requirement.

Personal protective equipment for building and servicing
Safety glasses are the baseline example
NHRL’s 2026 rules require safety glasses and other appropriate personal protective equipment while using power tools in the pits or machine shop. The rule does not name a universal lens rating, model or complete PPE list. Choose protection appropriate to the tool and material, and follow the tool manufacturer’s instructions and the venue’s posted requirements.
For an event or workshop shopping list, the relevant generic category is “safety glasses for power tools,” not a particular brand or product. Eye protection is only one layer: keep guards installed, secure the workpiece, control sparks and fragments, and maintain a designated work area.
Match PPE to the operation
- Wear eye protection whenever power tools are in use, as required by the event. Add other task-appropriate protection required by the venue or tool instructions.
- Use hearing, respiratory, hand or body protection only when appropriate to the operation and material; the cited rules do not establish a universal rating or mandatory model for these items.
- Keep loose clothing, hair and jewelry away from rotating tools and weapon mechanisms.
- Use a stable bench, clamps and proper tool guards. Never hold a small part in your hand while cutting or grinding it.
- Keep bystanders outside the work zone and know where emergency stops, first-aid supplies and fire equipment are located.
Control where hazardous tools are used
NHRL limits tools that create sparks, dust or shrapnel to a workshop or designated cutting-and-grinding area. Tools that produce flames or lasers belong in the workshop. This separation reduces the chance that a battery, fuel system or nearby team is exposed to an avoidable ignition or fragment hazard. The event’s pit layout and staff directions still control where a specific operation is allowed.

What a weapon lock does
A weapon lock is a physical restraint that keeps a powered weapon from becoming dangerous while the robot is outside the arena. It must arrest harmful motion, not merely make the robot look switched off. Spinners, drums, saws, lifters and flippers load a lock differently, so the attachment point and strength must be designed for the particular mechanism.
NHRL generally requires the lock while the weapon system and batteries are installed. Its rules identify limited cases in which staff may direct removal; that authorization comes from the event, not from a team deciding that its own switch is sufficient. C.R.O.W. requires a clearly visible, high-visibility locking device outside the arena and requires the weapon pin during the power-on procedure. These are organizer-specific details, not a universal specification for an off-the-shelf pin.

Make the restraint obvious and usable
- Use a high-visibility color or marking where the event requires it so an official can verify the lock at a glance.
- Place the lock so it can be installed and removed without putting a hand in the weapon’s potential travel path.
- Ensure the lock physically prevents harmful motion even if power is accidentally applied.
- Provide a defined storage location for the lock when it is removed; a loose pin can be lost between inspection and a fight.
- Carry a spare only if the event accepts it and it has the same functional capability. A spare is not a substitute for an installed lock.
Cover cutting and stabbing hazards
Sharp-edge covers protect handlers while a robot is carried, queued or inspected. NHRL inspectors check covers on edges or points that could seriously cut or stab someone while the bot is moved around the venue. Covers must stay attached during transport and handling and must not interfere with the official process for installing a weapon lock. Ask inspection staff whether a particular edge needs a cover; do not rely on your own interpretation of “sharp.”
External shutdown, removable links and fail-safes
C.R.O.W.’s 15-second deactivation requirement
C.R.O.W.’s September 2026 construction specifications require a manual deactivation method accessible from outside the robot, not obstructed by the weapon, that fully deactivates drive and weapons in under 15 seconds. This is a C.R.O.W. rule, not a claim that every event uses the same time limit. Build and test the access point with the armor, weapon and covers installed, because a switch that is reachable on a workbench may be hidden after final assembly.
Radio fail-safe and controlled motion
NHRL’s pre-fight inspection checks radio fail-safes for drive and weapon systems, controlled motion, and switch or removable-link operation. A fail-safe should leave the robot in a non-dangerous state when the control signal is lost, but the inspection result is what matters: officials must be able to verify the behavior on the submitted robot. Test it with the weapon restrained and in the event’s designated test area.
Keep shutdown independent of the weapon
An external disconnect must remain usable if the weapon is stalled, damaged or positioned over the access point. Route cables and mount hardware so a bent panel or displaced weapon cannot block the control. Label the disconnect clearly and make its direction of operation unambiguous. If your design uses a removable link, bring it to inspection and demonstrate removal without exposing a person to an energized mechanism.
Immobilization and safe testing
Block movement outside approved areas
C.R.O.W. requires robots outside an arena or official test area to be raised or blocked so their wheels or legs cannot cause movement if the robot powers on. Use a stable stand that supports the robot without placing a person under a suspended machine. The block must remain effective if drive power is accidentally applied; a thin prop that can tip or slide is not a meaningful control.

Use a test box for drive and weapons
NHRL states: “All robot weapon and drive testing must be done in a test box.” Its stated wheels-up exception applies only when a robot has a second dedicated weapon switch. Do not generalize that exception to other events or to a robot with one combined control. Follow the venue’s sequence for connecting batteries, installing the weapon lock, powering on, testing and removing power.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Move the robot to the designated test box or official test area before connecting power.
- Verify the weapon lock, sharp-edge covers and external shutdown are in the required state.
- Keep people outside the test boundary and appoint one person to control the transmitter or test switch.
- Test fail-safe behavior, drive direction, weapon controls and the manual disconnect only as the official procedure permits.
- Remove power, reinstall the lock and covers, and record any fault before the robot returns to the pits.
Battery charging and energy hazards
NHRL’s 2026 rules require a charging battery to be attended, and lithium-chemistry batteries must use balance leads. “Attended” means a responsible person remains present according to the event’s procedure; do not leave a pack charging while the team walks away. Confirm the chemistry, connector, charger settings and balance connection before starting, and stop charging if a pack, lead or connector behaves abnormally.
Keep batteries in the event-approved charging area and away from grinding sparks, flames and unprotected weapon mechanisms. A weapon lock is still required when the weapon system and batteries are installed if the event’s rule says so; disconnecting a controller does not automatically satisfy the lock requirement.
Inspection: what officials may require you to demonstrate
NHRL’s pre-fight checks
NHRL’s inspection process checks weapon locks or covers, sharp edges, radio fail-safes, controlled motion, switch or removable-link operation and other design-specific requirements. Arrive with the robot in the same configuration in which it will compete: armor fitted, restraint available, labels visible and the external disconnect accessible.
Inspection is not merely paperwork. Officials may ask you to show that the robot does not move unexpectedly, that the weapon remains restrained during handling, and that the shutdown method works. If a modification changes a weapon, battery location, control system or protective cover, expect reinspection.

Restricted systems need advance review
NHRL asks teams to begin approval for restricted systems early. Its guidance requests some designs at least four weeks before a competition so review can be completed no less than three weeks before it. Treat those lead times as part of the build schedule, not as an optional email. A flame-system submission includes the fuel type and amount, tank construction, ignition method, weapon safety and cover, and armor around the fuel tank.
Disclose hazardous or unusual systems even when you believe the design is safe. Written approval for one event or season does not automatically transfer to another organizer.
Historical comparison: BattleBots 2022
The 2022 BattleBots tournament rules illustrate how a formal technical inspection can include electrical, fuel, pneumatic, hydraulic, activation, fail-safe, controllability and weapon-operation demonstrations. That document is dated 2022 and should be read as a historical, organizer-specific example—not as current rules for a future tournament.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a pre-event safety checklist
- Confirm the current rulebook, weight class, season and inspection timetable.
- Install the event-accepted weapon lock and verify that it prevents harmful motion.
- Fit sharp-edge covers for every cut or stab hazard encountered during handling.
- Locate and label the external disconnect; test the required deactivation time for the event.
- Verify drive and weapon radio fail-safes with the weapon restrained.
- Check that wheels or legs are blocked whenever the robot is outside an arena or approved test area.
- Prepare safety glasses and other task-appropriate PPE for power-tool work.
- Charge batteries only in the designated area, with an attendant and balance leads for lithium chemistry.
- Submit restricted-system information by the organizer’s deadline and retain approval messages.
- Ask safety staff before changing a lock, cover, switch, weapon, fuel system or testing method.
Common failures and how to correct them
The lock is visible but does not stop motion
A pin that touches a cosmetic bracket or relies on motor braking is not a physical restraint. Redesign the interface so the lock arrests the weapon’s mechanical path, then demonstrate it to inspection staff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe shutdown is reachable only after opening armor
This fails an externally accessible requirement such as C.R.O.W.’s. Move the disconnect or provide an accepted external actuator that remains clear of the weapon. Recheck access with all panels installed.

The team tests in the pits
Stop and move to the event’s test box or official test area. NHRL explicitly requires both weapon and drive testing in a test box, while C.R.O.W. requires immobilization outside approved areas. A quiet pit is not an approved test location.
A modification is made after inspection
Tell the officials and request reinspection. Changes to batteries, radio systems, weapon geometry, armor or safety covers can alter fail-safe behavior and handling risk.
Where can you test a combat robot?
Test only in the arena, test box or official test area named by the event. If you are practicing before competition, use a facility that has an enclosed test space and explicit operating rules for combat robots; ordinary workshop floors do not provide the containment assumed by an event test box. Ask the facility or event safety staff about acceptable weapon locks, barriers, remote shutdown and supervision before bringing an energized robot.
C.R.O.W.’s rule document warns: “Combat robotics is inherently dangerous. There is no amount of regulation that can encompass all the dangers involved.” The statement is from the C.R.O.W. rules and is a reason to combine written requirements with conservative handling, not a waiver of any rule.
Quick Recap
How to resolve an unclear requirement
- Quote the exact rule, including its season and event.
- Describe the robot’s mechanism, energy source and proposed safety control with photographs or drawings.
- Ask the event’s safety official whether the design is acceptable and whether written approval is required.
- Record the answer and bring it to inspection.
- If the answer changes after a redesign, ask again rather than assuming the previous approval still applies.
