Preserved wooden artifacts show that prehistoric technology extended well beyond stone: people selected and shaped wood for weapons, everyday implements and, at Kalambo Falls, joined structural elements. The surviving finds also reveal planning, maintenance and reuse. Because wood usually decays, however, the archaeological record is an incomplete sample—and an artifact’s shape does not always prove exactly how it was used.
Why wooden finds change the picture of prehistory
Stone tools survive in many archaeological settings; wood usually does not. When researchers find prehistoric wooden objects, they are therefore seeing a part of technology that is often missing from the record. A site with stone artifacts but no preserved wood cannot, on that basis alone, be taken as evidence that its inhabitants did not work with wood.
That preservation imbalance matters for how technology is described. A stone-heavy collection can make stone appear to have carried more of everyday life than it did. Wooden artifacts document other possibilities: weapons made for hunting, implements used in domestic tasks, and timber shaped or joined for construction. They also provide evidence about the work behind an object—choosing a suitable piece of wood, shaping it for a purpose, and sometimes maintaining or reusing it.
These finds do not provide a complete inventory of prehistoric tools. They are rare survivors from particular settings, not a representative sample of everything people made. Their value lies in what can be observed on the objects and in the context around them, alongside carefully qualified interpretations of use and behavior.

What the objects can—and cannot—tell us
An artifact offers several kinds of evidence. Its material and form can show that someone selected and shaped wood; marks and construction can help researchers assess how it was worked. A pointed object may be consistent with a weapon, for example, while a deliberately cut notch that joins one log to another provides evidence of planned construction. Such observations support interpretations, but they do not always settle an object’s exact function.
The distinction is important because different claims rest on different evidence. The presence and shape of an object are physical observations. Calling it a spear, a throwing stick or a domestic tool is an interpretation based on those observations and the archaeological context. Inferring coordinated hunting or the social organization of work takes another step beyond identifying an object’s likely task. Strong accounts keep those levels separate instead of treating an interpretation as though it were directly visible in the wood.
- Material and shaping: evidence of deliberate woodworking and choices about raw material.
- Form and traces: clues to what an object may have done, without necessarily identifying one unique use.
- Find context and dating: evidence for when the deposit formed and how the artifact fits into a site’s history.
- Behavioral interpretation: a broader explanation proposed by researchers, rather than a fact the object establishes by itself.
Schöningen: weapons, everyday implements and working practices
The Schöningen 13 II-4 Spear Horizon in Germany is an unusually rich preserved-wood assemblage. A 2024 study by Leder and colleagues reports 187 wooden artifacts excavated through 2008. The researchers identify at least 10 spears, seven throwing sticks and 35 pointed or rounded split woods interpreted as likely domestic tools.

The counts describe the assemblage studied; the numbers for spears and throwing sticks are stated as minimum counts, and the domestic-tool interpretation is qualified. The 35 split woods are not simply a set of objects whose use is self-evident. Their proposed role in everyday activities is an interpretation of their form and evidence. Some may have been used in hide preparation, but that possible task should not be presented as certain or as the only explanation.

Evidence of choices beyond the finished object
The assemblage gives researchers a basis for examining how wood was selected and worked, not only what finished forms look like. Leder and colleagues describe deliberate raw-material choices and traces of woodworking. They also interpret the assemblage as showing maintenance, repair and recycling, as well as production at the site. Those patterns matter because they suggest that wooden technology involved an ongoing set of practices: objects could be made, kept in use and adapted rather than discarded as soon as their first task was done.
That interpretation adds detail to the story of toolmaking without requiring every artifact to have a known biography. The evidence supports the researchers’ account of maintenance and reuse across the assemblage; it does not mean that the precise history of every individual piece can be reconstructed. Similarly, the researchers’ suggestion that some split woods may relate to hide preparation is plausible within their interpretation, not a uniquely proven function.
How old are the Schöningen spears?
The age is a live scholarly question, and it should be attributed rather than stated as a settled number. Older estimates placed the Spear Horizon at about 300,000 years, based on relative stratigraphic chronology and correlations. In a 2025 study, Hutson and colleagues applied amino-acid geochronology to fossils from the find-bearing deposits and proposed a late Marine Isotope Stage 7 age of about 200,000 years. A joint explanation from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and LEIZA describes the revision and method.

A separate 2025 behavioral interpretation places the site within repeated ambush hunts of horse-family groups and a broader transition toward coordinated hunting. That is a proposed account of behavior at the site, not something established solely by finding a wooden weapon. Keeping the chronology, artifact observations and behavioral interpretation distinct makes the evidence easier to assess.
Kalambo Falls: woodworking used to join structural elements
Kalambo Falls in Zambia offers a different kind of evidence from portable weapons and implements. A 2023 Nature study reports two logs in waterlogged deposits, joined transversely by an intentionally cut notch. The researchers interpret this arrangement as structural use of wood: the evidence is not just for shaping a tool that someone could carry, but for cutting timber so that pieces could interlock.
Luminescence dating of the deposits containing the logs gave an age of at least 476 ± 23 thousand years. This is the age assigned to the archaeological deposits and find, not a direct date obtained from the wood itself. The qualification matters when comparing Kalambo with sites dated by other approaches. The result identifies very early evidence for structural woodworking in this record, but it does not establish when humans first began building or working wood.

This is a different technological problem from making a single pointed implement: the logs had to be shaped in a way that allowed them to join. The researchers interpret the result as construction, while the surviving arrangement remains the primary observation on which that interpretation rests.

Clacton: a shaped point and an age attribution under review
The Clacton-on-Sea spear point from England has been studied using standard microscopy, 3D microscopy, micro-computed tomography and 3D scanning. Initial results indicate internal features and shaping strategies consistent with attention to wood properties. Those methods let researchers examine form and internal structure from multiple angles; the reported interpretation is that the shaping was deliberate, not that every aspect of the point’s use or maker is known.
The point is often discussed with an attribution of about 400,000 years, associated with Marine Isotope Stage 11. The University of Reading and Natural History Museum project page says archival research was being used to test that attribution. It is therefore more accurate to describe the age as under investigation in that project update than as an uncontested direct date for the wooden object.
Clacton also has a separate story about organic technology that should not be conflated with the wooden point. A 2022 Scientific Reports study reassessed modified bone pieces from the site and interpreted them as knapping hammers used to produce or resharpen stone flakes. The study describes these as the earliest known organic knapping hammers associated with a core-and-flake industry. They provide useful context for technology involving several materials, but they are bone artifacts, not wooden ones.

How the three cases differ
Schöningen, Kalambo and Clacton all expand the record of early woodworking, but they answer different questions. Their dates also come with distinct methods and qualifications, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable or as direct measurements of the wooden objects themselves.

The comparison shows why a single “oldest wooden tool” answer can be misleading. Kalambo provides evidence interpreted as structural woodworking with an age assigned to the deposits. Clacton is a shaped wooden point with an age attribution still being tested in the cited project update. Schöningen supplies a much larger assemblage whose chronology has recently been revised by a different dating study. Each case demonstrates a different dimension of technology, and each claim needs its own dating and interpretive qualification.
Why these artifacts survived
Wood preservation depends on the conditions around an object after it is deposited. Schöningen’s lakeshore setting and favorable sediment conditions helped preserve its artifacts; Kalambo’s logs were found in waterlogged deposits. These contexts are not interchangeable, and the preservation conditions at one site cannot simply be assumed for another.
The result is a preservation bias: archaeologists see wooden technology most clearly where unusual local conditions allowed wood to survive. Other objects may have disappeared without leaving evidence. This is why the absence of preserved wooden artifacts at a site cannot establish that its people did not use or work wood, and why counts from exceptional sites should not be treated as a measure of how common a tool was everywhere.
Dating adds a separate source of uncertainty. The Schöningen revision relies on amino-acid geochronology applied to fossils from the find-bearing deposits, Kalambo’s reported age comes from luminescence dating of deposits, and the Clacton attribution was being checked through archival research. These approaches address different evidence. An age assigned to a deposit or under review as an attribution is not equivalent to a direct date on a wooden object. Comparisons are strongest when the method, object or deposit being dated, and status of the interpretation are all stated.
What a careful reading of the evidence adds up to
Preserved wood expands prehistoric technology from a story told mainly through durable stone and bone into one that includes weapons, probable domestic implements and construction. Schöningen shows a varied assemblage and practices interpreted as upkeep and reuse; Kalambo shows logs shaped to interlock; Clacton offers a worked point whose shaping is being examined in detail. Together, the cases show that woodworking could involve different tasks and levels of planning.
They also show why archaeological conclusions need calibrated language. The artifacts establish that people shaped wood in these settings. Their likely purposes, exact ages and behavioral implications depend on context, dating methods and scholarly interpretation. The evidence is important precisely because it makes a missing part of the record visible—without making that incomplete record more certain than it is.
