You do not need to move your ETH, buy a special wallet, or change your Ethereum account today. Ethereum.org’s current guidance says no existing quantum computer can break Ethereum’s cryptography. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is preparation for a future threat: a sufficiently capable quantum computer could derive a private key from an exposed public key, forge signatures, and let an attacker take control of an account.
The migration will be a protocol and wallet-software project carried out in stages. Understanding which accounts and applications are exposed, what Ethereum is building, and which decisions are still unsettled will help you act when an official migration path exists.
What post-quantum cryptography means in Ethereum
Post-quantum cryptography describes cryptographic algorithms designed to remain secure against attacks from sufficiently capable quantum computers. Ethereum currently relies on cryptography that is secure against ordinary computers but could be vulnerable to a future quantum attack.

An externally owned account (EOA) signs transactions with a secp256k1 elliptic-curve key and uses ECDSA signatures. Before an account sends a transaction, its full public key is generally not visible onchain; the account address is derived from it. Once a transaction reveals the public key, a powerful quantum computer could theoretically calculate the private key and create valid-looking transactions.

That is an account-control problem, not an instant rewrite of Ethereum’s finalized history. The Ethereum Foundation’s Post-Quantum team describes the realistic failure mode as stolen funds and impersonation. A quantum attacker would be trying to sign transactions as you, not travel backward in time and alter finalized blocks.

The exact arrival date of a quantum computer capable of breaking Ethereum’s cryptography is unknown. Current roadmaps therefore prepare the network before the capability exists rather than responding to an attack that is happening now.
What is exposed today—and what is not
Externally owned accounts
EOAs are controlled by private keys and ECDSA signatures. If a future quantum computer can recover a private key from a transaction’s exposed public key, it could forge transactions, impersonate the owner, and transfer ETH or tokens. Accounts that have never sent a transaction have an additional protective layer because their public keys have not been exposed onchain, but Ethereum’s guidance still expects all accounts to migrate eventually.
Smart-contract accounts and applications
Smart contracts can hold ETH, fungible tokens, NFTs, and DeFi positions. Their exposure depends on the cryptography built into each contract and the account model used to authorize actions. A future migration may require contract upgrades where internal cryptography is not quantum-resistant. Moving assets one by one is not expected to be necessary when an account migration mechanism is available; the account’s holdings can remain associated with that account. Contracts that custody funds or verify signatures may need separate engineering work.
Validators and consensus
Ethereum validators use BLS signatures to aggregate votes. BLS signatures are efficient today but are not considered suitable against a sufficiently powerful quantum computer. Replacing them affects validator attestations, aggregation, and consensus-layer performance, not just an individual wallet.

Data availability
Ethereum’s data layer also needs protection. The Post-Quantum team identifies quantum-resistant blob handling, commitments, and sampling as part of the work. These are protocol services used by rollups and other infrastructure; an ordinary ETH holder will not install a separate data-availability tool.
How Ethereum plans to become quantum-resistant
Ethereum’s approach is a coordinated migration across execution, consensus, and data layers. The objective is cryptographic agility: the network and accounts should be able to adopt new signature schemes without redesigning every component whenever a scheme changes.
Account abstraction and gradual account migration
The current direction is to use native account abstraction so an account can change its signature method. Instead of requiring a separate hard fork for every signature scheme, account logic can support a migration from ECDSA to a post-quantum scheme. Ethereum.org expects migration to be opt-in and gradual once the required support exists, with wallet software guiding users through the process.
Post-quantum validator signatures
The official guide discusses leanXMSS, a hash-based signature approach, and leanVM, a minimal zero-knowledge virtual-machine approach for aggregating post-quantum signatures. Post-quantum validator signatures are described as roughly 3,000 bytes, compared with 96 bytes for BLS signatures. The figures are design figures in the 2026 guide, not measurements from a deployed production system. The guide says leanVM’s planned aggregation approach aims to compress data by 250x, also a design target rather than an independently verified live-network result.

Post-quantum protection must extend to commitments and sampling for blobs. This work is intended to preserve confidence that data supplied by rollups and other users is available and correctly sampled even after the signature and hashing assumptions change.
Roadmap dates: targets, not deadlines
Ethereum.org describes a sequence of planning milestones using the labels I*, J*, L*, and M*. They are not shipped consumer features or guaranteed fork dates.

The user guide places approximately 2029 as a target for core post-quantum infrastructure, while the Ethereum Foundation’s September 7, 2026 priorities update identifies December 2029 as the target for full resistance across execution, consensus, and data. The Foundation calls the schedule aggressive, says milestone ordering can change, and notes that researchers are still defining the reduced guarantees of an interim minimum-viable post-quantum milestone.

That minimum-viable milestone is intended as a temporary safeguard with fewer guarantees than full protection. It should not be interpreted as a date by which every wallet holder must migrate. The Post-Quantum team says final direction remains subject to Ethereum’s open governance, and the Ethereum Foundation is not Ethereum’s central authority. Fork sequence, implementation status, and dates can therefore change.
What you should do now
For an ordinary ETH, token, NFT, or DeFi user, the current action list is deliberately short:
- Keep using your existing account normally; no quantum emergency migration is required.
- Do not send funds solely because of a quantum headline.
- Do not buy a wallet on the assumption that a hardware device alone makes an account quantum-safe.
- Keep your seed phrase or key-management system secure, because conventional theft and phishing remain immediate risks.
- Follow official Ethereum and wallet announcements for a documented migration procedure rather than relying on unsolicited messages.
There is no currently identified retail wallet provider or product with an official post-quantum migration date in the reviewed guidance. A wallet should not be described as quantum-ready without verified support for Ethereum’s eventual account and signature changes.
What a future migration is likely to involve
Wallet-guided account conversion
Once post-quantum signatures are widely supported, Ethereum.org expects wallet software to guide users through account migration. The exact screens, transaction format, fees, and supported schemes have not been finalized. A legitimate process should be documented by the Ethereum protocol and the wallet you use, not delivered as a surprise request for your seed phrase.
One account migration, many assets
The guidance says assets in an account do not each need a separate migration. ETH, tokens, and NFTs held directly by an account should remain associated with it as the account’s authorization method changes. Smart contracts that hold assets may require their own upgrades when their internal signature checks or cryptographic assumptions are not quantum-resistant.

DeFi and contract dependencies
DeFi users may face more than a wallet update. Lending markets, decentralized exchanges, bridges, multisig systems, oracle modules, and account-abstraction frameworks can each contain signature verification or other cryptographic dependencies. Developers will need to upgrade those contracts and test compatibility with new signature schemes. Users should wait for an application’s official migration instructions before moving positions or approving replacement contracts.
Previously unused accounts
An account that has never sent a transaction has not exposed its public key in the usual way, giving it an additional layer of protection. That does not make it permanently exempt. The official guidance says all accounts should eventually migrate, including inactive ones, once the network provides a safe path.

Why dormant wallets are still an open question
The community has not reached consensus on what should happen to accounts whose owners never migrate. There is no established rule saying dormant funds will be confiscated, and no final recovery process has been adopted. Any claim that inactive accounts will automatically be moved, frozen, or recovered goes beyond the current guidance.
This governance question matters because a quantum-resistant network must decide how to protect owners who are unavailable, have lost access, or simply do not respond to migration prompts. Until Ethereum governance resolves it, users should treat statements about compulsory treatment of dormant accounts as speculation.
How NIST standards fit in
In August 2024, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized three post-quantum standards: ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and SLH-DSA. They provide a broader industry foundation for quantum-resistant key establishment and signatures. Their existence does not mean Ethereum wallets have adopted them, nor does it select the schemes Ethereum will ultimately use for accounts, validators, or data commitments.
Ethereum’s engineering choices must account for signature size, verification cost, aggregation, contract compatibility, and consensus performance. A standardized algorithm can be part of that ecosystem without being a drop-in replacement for Ethereum’s current secp256k1 or BLS usage.

When a real migration option appears, evaluate it against concrete technical and operational criteria rather than marketing language:
- Supported signature scheme: identify the exact post-quantum algorithm and whether Ethereum protocol documentation recognizes it.
- Account migration support: confirm that the wallet can execute the required account conversion on the correct network and chain.
- Recovery design: understand how seed phrases, social recovery, multisig controls, and device loss work after migration.
- Application compatibility: check whether the DeFi protocols, bridges, NFT contracts, and other applications you use accept the migrated account.
- Network and fee handling: verify transaction format, gas requirements, and whether migration is supported on every network where your assets reside.
- Documentation and authenticity: use instructions published by the wallet and Ethereum’s official channels; reject links or support messages that ask for secret keys.
These are evaluation criteria for a future decision, not evidence that compatible consumer products are available today.
Common misconceptions
“A quantum computer can steal my ETH today.”
No. Ethereum.org states that no quantum computer today can threaten Ethereum’s cryptography. The risk is prospective and depends on a future machine with sufficient capability.

“I should move every asset to a new address immediately.”
No current Ethereum guidance calls for an emergency move. Moving funds now can introduce ordinary risks such as phishing, wrong-address transfers, and compromised devices without providing a documented quantum benefit.
“Quantum computers will rewrite finalized blocks.”
The identified user-facing failure mode is forged authorization: an attacker signs transactions as an account owner. That is different from rewriting finalized history.
“A hardware wallet is automatically post-quantum.”
Hardware wallets can improve general key security, but the reviewed sources do not establish that buying one now makes an Ethereum account quantum-safe. Quantum resistance depends on the account and signature scheme supported by Ethereum and the wallet software.

It is not. Approximately 2029 for core infrastructure and December 2029 for the Foundation’s full-readiness target are current plans. The schedule is described as aggressive, subject to change, and dependent on open governance and unresolved engineering work.
When could quantum computers become a threat?
No reliable date is available. The capability required to derive Ethereum private keys from exposed public keys has not been demonstrated, and estimates for reaching it vary. Ethereum’s roadmap is therefore risk management under uncertainty: build migration mechanisms and protocol support before the threat is practical, while avoiding an unnecessary user response today.
For users, the practical trigger will not be a headline about a laboratory prototype. It will be an official, tested migration path supported by Ethereum protocol changes and wallet software. Until that exists, normal account security remains the priority.
