A portfolio can own hundreds of stocks and still depend heavily on a small group of companies or a shared theme such as artificial intelligence. Diversification is about spreading exposure across investments with different risk and return drivers—not merely increasing the number of holdings. That distinction matters when the biggest companies account for a large share of a market-weighted index.
What diversification means—and what it does not
Diversification spreads investments across different asset categories and across different exposures within each category. The SEC describes a diversified portfolio as diversified “between asset categories and within asset categories.” Stocks, bonds and cash can respond differently to economic conditions; within stocks, company size, industry, geography and investment style can also shape returns. The appropriate mix depends on an investor’s goals, timeframe and risk tolerance, not on a universal formula. See the SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing and its overview of asset allocation and diversification.
Owning more securities is not automatically the same as diversifying. A fund may hold hundreds of companies, but if a few large holdings dominate its weight—or if many holdings rely on the same economic driver—the portfolio may be less diversified in practice than its holding count suggests. Conversely, a fund concentrated in one sector can remain narrow even if it owns many companies in that sector. The SEC advises investors to review funds’ top holdings and consider whether the combined portfolio provides the intended diversification.

In a market-cap-weighted index, companies with larger market values receive larger weights. When a handful of the largest companies rise faster than the rest, their share of the index grows. The index can still include many businesses, but its results become more dependent on its largest members.

Fidelity reported that the ten largest U.S. stocks made up nearly 40% of the S&P 500 as of June 30, 2026. In the same analysis, Fidelity reported that the top ten represented 23% in 2020 and 17% in 1996. These are Fidelity’s figures for those dates; they describe index weight, not a forecast that the largest stocks will rise or fall. Fidelity’s discussion of this issue is available in “The hidden concentration risk in index funds.”
Other published concentration figures use different groups and measures, so they should not be combined as if they were one statistic. BlackRock reported that the top 20 S&P 500 companies represented 49% of the index and contributed 64% to its five-year return, using the periods and methodology described in its 2026 analysis. Invesco’s 2026 outlook, published in 2025, said a group it defined as AI-linked companies accounted for more than half of S&P 500 returns and almost one third of global equity returns in 2025 through October 28. Invesco’s group included NVDA, MSFT, AMZN, META, AVGO, GOOGL, ORCL and AMD. The group definition, measurement period and metric differ from Fidelity’s top-ten weight figure. See BlackRock’s mega-cap analysis and Invesco’s 2026 outlook.
“AI stock” is not a single standardized index category. Publishers may define the group differently, and companies can have multiple businesses and sources of revenue. The relevant portfolio question is not just whether a company is labeled AI-linked, but whether several holdings are exposed to similar conditions—for example, investment in AI infrastructure, data-center demand or broader economic shifts.

Why several AI-linked stocks may share risk
Seven different tickers do not necessarily represent seven independent sources of return. S&P Global Market Intelligence notes that major companies associated with AI can share important drivers, including AI-related capital expenditure and data-center demand. If those drivers change, multiple holdings may respond in the same direction. A portfolio can therefore have company-level variety while retaining substantial exposure to one theme.
Correlation statistics can help describe how investments moved relative to one another in a chosen period, but they are not fixed properties. S&P Global explains that estimates based on historical returns vary with the measurement window, return frequency and weighting method. Its August 2026 analysis also discusses options-implied correlations as a forward-looking signal, while cautioning that those measures are not available or reliable for every less-liquid asset. Neither historical nor implied correlation guarantees how holdings will behave in a future market.
Concentration is a statement about dependence, not a prediction. A large weight in AI-linked leaders does not prove that the market is in a bubble, that those companies are about to decline, or that a different portfolio will perform better. Invesco presents investor concern about AI spending and valuations—including the question “Are we in a bubble?”—as a debate, and acknowledges that a rebalancing stance could be wrong if the AI narrative continues to dominate.

How to check whether your funds overlap
Start with the whole portfolio rather than assessing each account or fund in isolation. A broad U.S. index fund, a technology fund and a growth fund may each look diversified on their own while holding many of the same large companies. The overlap can make total exposure more concentrated than the number of fund names implies.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- List every holding and its weight. Use the fund provider’s current holdings page or prospectus, and note the date of the data. Include holdings across retirement and taxable accounts if you are assessing your overall investments.
- Identify repeated companies. Add up the weight of each company across funds, accounting for how much of your portfolio each fund represents. For example, a company held at 5% inside a fund that makes up 40% of your portfolio contributes 2% to the total portfolio before counting any other funds that also hold it.
- Look beyond ticker overlap. Group holdings by sector, company size, geography and investment style. Ask whether multiple holdings depend on similar drivers, such as AI-related capital spending or data-center demand.
- Review asset allocation separately. Check how much is in stocks, bonds, cash and any other assets. A collection of equity funds does not by itself diversify across asset categories.
- Compare the result with your purpose and time horizon. Decide whether the resulting exposure matches your investment plan and tolerance for fluctuations. The SEC notes that allocation depends on timeframe and risk tolerance; a general article cannot determine an appropriate personal mix.
Fund holdings and market weights change, so treat a holdings review as a dated snapshot, not a permanent description. The exercise is useful for understanding what you own and where exposure overlaps; it cannot identify future winners or remove market risk.
Ways to broaden exposure—and the trade-offs

| Approach | What changes | Trade-off to understand |
|---|---|---|
| Remain with market-cap weighting | Weights reflect companies’ market values, preserving broad exposure to the market and its current leaders. | The largest companies can account for a substantial portion of the fund, increasing dependence on their performance. |
| Equal-weight an index | Each constituent receives the same weight at the index’s rebalancing point. Charles Schwab says its S&P 500 equal-weight example allocates 0.20% to each of the 500 constituents and rebalances quarterly. | Equal company weights do not produce equal sector weights: sectors with more index constituents can have greater representation. Equal weighting shifts more weight toward smaller members relative to a cap-weighted index and may lag if the largest leaders keep outperforming. |
| Use fundamental weighting | Weights are based on business or financial measures, which may include revenue growth, profitability, cash flow or yield, rather than market value alone. | This is a different weighting method, not a guarantee of better returns; it can underperform a cap-weighted benchmark. |
| Add small- or mid-cap exposure | Broadens company-size exposure beyond mega- and large-cap stocks. | Smaller-company exposure has its own risks and return patterns; it will not necessarily offset large-company declines in every period. |
| Add value- or dividend-oriented exposure | Changes investment-style exposure relative to growth-heavy holdings. | Style leadership can change, and these exposures may lag when growth stocks lead. |
| Add international equities | Broadens geographic exposure beyond U.S. companies. | Geography alone does not ensure independent returns. Review fund holdings and underlying exposures rather than assuming different markets always move differently. |
| Review the mix across asset classes | Combines equities with possible holdings such as bonds or cash, based on the investor’s allocation plan. | The appropriate mix depends on goals, timeframe and risk tolerance. It is not a market-timing rule or a one-size-fits-all allocation. |
Schwab’s 2026 analysis discusses smaller and mid-cap stocks, international equities, value and dividend factors, equal weighting and fundamental weighting as ways investors might broaden equity exposure. Those are options with different exposures—not a ranking of approaches or a promise of higher returns. Its discussion of current index weights uses figures dated July 31, 2026. See Charles Schwab’s equity diversification analysis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What rebalancing can—and cannot—do
Rebalancing means restoring a portfolio to a chosen allocation after market movements have shifted its weights. In principle, that can keep a portfolio near its intended mix rather than letting the strongest-performing assets grow into a larger share by default. The SEC describes rebalancing as part of managing an allocation, but its guidance does not set one schedule that fits every investor.
Rebalancing away from recent leaders can reduce dependence on them, but it can also mean lagging a cap-weighted market if those leaders continue to outperform. Schwab explicitly notes that possibility for technology- and AI-linked stocks; Invesco likewise says its own rebalancing stance could be wrong if the AI narrative dominates in 2026. A decision to rebalance is therefore about maintaining a chosen risk profile, not reliably forecasting a market turning point.

A practical way to frame the decision
- If your concern is repeated holdings: calculate company weights across funds and inspect common sectors and themes.
- If your concern is U.S. mega-cap dependence: compare the portfolio’s company-size and weighting exposures with alternatives, while recognizing that reducing leaders can hurt relative performance when they continue to lead.
- If your concern is equity-only risk: examine asset allocation in light of your timeframe and risk tolerance, rather than assuming another stock fund will solve it.
- If you are unsure what your portfolio holds: review current fund holdings and, if needed, consider discussing allocation and overlap with a qualified financial professional.
Vanguard’s guidance puts the limit plainly: “Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.” It can spread exposure and manage some forms of concentration, but it cannot eliminate market risk or reliably forecast which investments will win. See Vanguard’s “How to invest your next dollar.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does owning hundreds of stocks mean my portfolio is diversified?
Not necessarily. A fund can hold hundreds of securities while a few companies dominate its market weight, or while many holdings share a sector or theme exposure. Check both top holdings and the drivers that may affect them.
How diversified is my S&P 500 fund if a few AI stocks drive returns?
It may be diversified across many companies but still concentrated by market weight or shared theme. Fidelity reported that the S&P 500’s ten largest U.S. stocks represented nearly 40% of the index on June 30, 2026. That figure describes concentration, not a prediction about future returns.
Does AI-stock concentration mean the market is in a bubble?
No. Concentration shows that returns and index weights depend more on a relatively small group; by itself, it does not establish that valuations are unsustainable or predict a decline. Investors’ concerns about AI spending and valuations remain a debate, not a certainty.
Will equal weighting or international stocks perform better than a cap-weighted U.S. index?
There is no guaranteed winner. Equal weighting, international exposure, smaller-company stocks, value or dividend approaches change exposures and can lag when market leaders outperform. Compare their roles and trade-offs rather than treating any one approach as universally superior.
The Bottom Line
Diversification is measured by what drives a portfolio, not just how many holdings it lists. Review fund overlap, company weights, shared themes and asset allocation; then compare possible changes against your goals, timeframe and risk tolerance. Broadening exposure can reduce reliance on a narrow group, but it can also lag if those leaders keep winning, and diversification cannot prevent losses.
