Judge the game you can actually play, not the promise of a new franchise name. Before buying, confirm that its genre, core gameplay loop, pace, difficulty and solo-or-multiplayer design match what you enjoy; watch representative footage or try a demo; read reviews for repeated, preference-relevant details; compare the current price with the use you realistically expect; and verify platform access and social requirements.

Why a new franchise name is not enough

A recognizable publisher, impressive announcement trailer or “first game in a new universe” tells you very little about personal fit. A franchise can have an appealing setting but mechanics you dislike, or a polished presentation that hides a slow loop, punishing difficulty or an online structure that does not suit your group.

Player preferences are genuinely varied. Microsoft Advertising’s March 26, 2024 overview surveyed 10,202 players and identified six audience segments with different motivations, gameplay habits, platforms and genre preferences. That segmentation is a useful warning against treating “gamers” as one audience. The right question is not whether a franchise is broadly popular; it is whether this particular game delivers the kind of play you want.

1. Define the experience you are buying

Start with genre, but do not stop there

Genre is an efficient first filter. Decide whether you want, for example, a role-playing game, strategy game, platformer, racing game, shooter, simulation or narrative adventure. Then identify the specific activities inside that label. Two games in the same genre may differ completely in exploration, combat, resource management, dialogue, construction or competition.

Identify the core loop

Describe the repeating sequence in one sentence: explore, fight, collect and upgrade; plan, build and optimize; race, tune and retry; investigate, solve and advance. If you cannot explain what you will do for most of a session, the marketing pitch has not yet answered the buying question. Look for footage that shows ordinary play rather than only cinematic scenes.

Match pace and difficulty to your habits

Ask whether the game expects short sessions or long uninterrupted runs, constant action or patient planning, forgiving experimentation or repeated failure. Check how much time is spent travelling, managing inventories, reading dialogue, waiting for matchmaking or repeating encounters. A game can be well made and still be a poor fit if its rhythm conflicts with yours.

Separate motivation from setting

A science-fiction world, historical theme or distinctive art style may attract you, but decide what will keep you playing after the novelty fades. Some players seek mastery and competition; others want discovery, story, creativity, relaxation or social time. Choose mechanics that support your motivation instead of assuming the setting will carry the whole experience.

2. Inspect representative gameplay

Prefer uncut or long-form footage

Trailers and gameplay videos are among the purchase drivers identified in the 2024 Venatus/IAB UK report, alongside reviews, genre, price and recommendations. Use them as an inspection tool, not just as advertising. Watch enough continuous play to see the interface, enemy or opponent variety, loading, navigation and the transition between activities.

Use a demo or trial when available

Hands-on access is stronger than a promise. In a demo, test the controls, camera, text size, audio mix, difficulty options and whether the first-hour tasks appeal to you. Notice whether the demo represents the final game or an unusually prepared showcase; a limited sample cannot establish every system, but it can expose an immediate mismatch.

Check what the footage does not show

  • Does the video show ordinary missions, or only a curated set piece?
  • Can you see the menus and progression systems clearly enough to understand recurring chores?
  • Are online features, matchmaking, co-operative roles or competitive modes demonstrated?
  • Is the footage from the same platform and edition you plan to buy?
  • Are performance, accessibility and control options visible, or still unspecified?

Do not infer that a polished trailer proves a satisfying long-term loop. It proves only that the publisher selected attractive moments for that trailer.

3. Read reviews for details, not just scores

Understand how people use reviews

YouGov’s June 17, 2024 summary across 17 international markets reported that 24% of respondents relied more on consumer reviews, 6% relied more on critic reviews, 25% relied on both equally, and 24% relied on neither when buying video games. These are separate reported response categories, not a rule that reviews determine every purchase, and local preferences can differ.

The practical lesson is to use the review type that answers your question. Critics often provide structured coverage near launch; consumer reviews may reveal recurring issues after longer play, updates or exposure to a wider range of hardware. Neither category is automatically more useful for every decision.

Look for repeated, specific observations

Read several reviews and record concrete points rather than averaging numerical scores. Repetition matters: if multiple independent reviewers describe the same slow opening, awkward camera, shallow endgame, unstable online mode or excellent accessibility options, that pattern is more informative than one enthusiastic paragraph.

Translate criticism into your priorities

A complaint is not universally disqualifying. A reviewer may dislike a deliberate pace that you enjoy, or praise a complex system that you find exhausting. Ask, “Would this affect the way I intend to play?” A short campaign matters differently to someone seeking a weekend story than to someone seeking a long-term competitive game.

Check the date and version

Reviews can describe a launch build, an updated release or a particular platform. Confirm whether patches, expansions, a separate console version or a “complete” edition changes the feature set. Treat a score as a dated summary, then read the text for conditions that still apply to the edition you will purchase.

4. Compare price with the play you expect

Use a personal value calculation

The Venatus/IAB UK report identifies price, discounts, value for money and extended play hours among purchase considerations. Do not apply a universal “hours per dollar” formula: a short, memorable campaign may be better value for you than a long game filled with activities you will not enjoy. Estimate the kind of use you actually expect—one focused playthrough, occasional sessions, or months of multiplayer—and compare that expectation with the current price.

Account for what is included

  • Check whether the listed price includes the full campaign, future content, a season pass or only a base license.
  • Confirm whether a higher edition adds playable content or mainly cosmetic items.
  • Compare the current sale price with the regular price without assuming the discount will last.
  • Include any required subscription, additional storage or separate platform purchase in your total.

Industry spending provides scale but not a verdict on an individual purchase: the Entertainment Software Association reported $59.3 billion in total U.S. consumer spending on video games in 2024. That figure describes the U.S. market as a whole; it cannot show whether a particular game is worth your money.

5. Verify platform and edition access

Confirm that you can run the exact version

Platform availability is a documented purchase driver. Check the store listing for your console, computer or handheld and verify that the edition, release region and account type match what you intend to buy. A franchise may launch on some systems first, offer different features across versions or omit cross-play on a particular platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check practical requirements

  • Compare the stated operating-system, hardware, storage and network requirements with your setup.
  • Verify whether online play requires a platform subscription or a persistent connection.
  • Look for save-transfer, cross-progression and cross-play information if friends use other systems.
  • Confirm language, accessibility and local multiplayer support before purchase; these can differ by edition.

Do not treat a platform logo in a trailer as proof that every feature is identical. Use the store page and technical notes for the specific version you will own.

6. Test the social fit

Decide whether you want solo, cooperative or competitive play

Ask whether the game is primarily a solo experience, a co-operative game that needs a regular group, or a competitive title built around matchmaking. Then check group size, role requirements, communication expectations and whether progress can be made alone. “Has multiplayer” is too vague to answer those questions.

Match the design to your actual group

The ESA’s 2025 U.S. report says 55% of players aged 8–90 play with others weekly. That population-level statistic does not mean every buyer wants multiplayer. Your relevant test is whether the people you play with own compatible systems, have compatible schedules and enjoy the same mode. A heavily social game may lose much of its value if your group is unavailable; a solo-focused game may be ideal even when you usually play with others.

Check the cost of participation

Look for account requirements, voice-chat expectations, matchmaking regions, moderation tools and any recurring purchase needed to access the mode. If the game depends on a live community, read current player reports for queue times and server reliability rather than assuming a launch audience will remain unchanged.

How to compare two games or editions

When more than one new franchise is competing for your budget, use the same questions for each candidate. The table keeps unlike strengths from being hidden behind a single score.

Comparison area Questions to answer What counts as strong evidence
Play fit Do genre, core loop, pace and difficulty match your stated preferences? A demo or representative footage showing ordinary play
Evidence quality Are the same strengths and weaknesses repeated across independent reviews? Specific observations tied to the way you plan to play
Cost and expected use What is the current price, included content and realistic amount or type of play? The exact edition listing and your own usage estimate
Access Does your platform support the required version, features and technical requirements? Platform-specific store and support information
Social fit Can you play solo or with the people you have available? Clear group-size, matchmaking and cross-play details
Personal relevance Does this entry offer the mechanics or experience that attracted you? Observed gameplay, not the franchise label alone

These are comparison prompts, not a scientifically measured weighting system. The available studies do not establish that one factor should always outrank the others.

A 15-minute pre-purchase workflow

  1. Write your non-negotiables. Note your preferred genre, session length, solo or social preference, acceptable difficulty and platform.
  2. Watch continuous gameplay. Choose footage from the platform you will use and observe the repeating loop, menus and ordinary encounters.
  3. Try the demo. Test controls, readability, accessibility and the first meaningful progression choices when a trial exists.
  4. Read several reviews. Collect recurring details and mark which complaints affect your priorities.
  5. Inspect the exact listing. Verify edition contents, price, discount terms, storage, network and account requirements.
  6. Check your group’s reality. Confirm who can play, on which systems, at what times and in which modes.
  7. Make a reversible choice when uncertain. If you still cannot tell whether the loop suits you, wait for more hands-on coverage or a legitimate trial instead of treating hype as evidence.

Common buying mistakes and better alternatives

Buying the franchise promise

Mistake: Assuming a fresh universe guarantees originality or quality. Better approach: Describe the moment-to-moment play and decide whether you want that loop.

Using one score as a verdict

Mistake: Treating a high critic or user score as proof of personal fit. Better approach: Find repeated, concrete comments and map them to your priorities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing length with value

Mistake: Assuming more hours automatically mean a better purchase. Better approach: Compare the price with the kind of sessions you will genuinely complete.

Ignoring the people and hardware involved

Mistake: Buying first and discovering that friends use another platform or that a required online mode is unavailable. Better approach: Verify the exact version and social requirements before paying.

The decision rule

Buy when the observable gameplay matches your preferred experience, independent reviews reveal no deal-breaking issue for your priorities, the exact price feels justified by your expected use, and your platform and social setup are confirmed. Wait when one of those answers is unknown—especially the core loop or edition compatibility. A new franchise earns your attention through the game you can see and play, not through familiarity with a name that has not yet proved what it offers.
