There is no single ping that professional gamers have. It varies with the game, the player’s location and route to the server, network stability, and whether the match is played online or on tournament infrastructure. A low ping helps, but the number alone does not tell you how responsive a game will feel.
Why there is no standard pro-gamer ping
Ping is the round-trip time for data to travel between a player’s device and a game server, measured in milliseconds. Riot Games Support defines it as the time for packets to travel from a player’s computer to Riot’s servers and back; as Riot puts it, “Lower latency is better.” Riot Games Support’s connection guide explains the measure in the context of its games.
Professional players do not all connect to the same server from the same place. Physical distance is a major factor when a connection is otherwise working normally, while the internet route chosen by an ISP and local network conditions can also affect latency. A professional playing online from home may therefore see a different ping from a teammate, or from the same player at a tournament.

What the published numbers actually tell you
Riot’s VALORANT netcode article offers useful examples, but they describe specific goals and tests—not a universal pro benchmark.
| Figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| 35 ms for 70% of players | Riot stated this as a VALORANT infrastructure goal. It is not evidence that the target was later achieved, nor a measured average for professional players. Riot’s VALORANT netcode article |
| 128 ticks per second | The server simulation rate Riot describes for VALORANT. Tick rate is not ping: it describes how often the server updates its simulation, not the round-trip travel time between a player and server. Riot’s VALORANT netcode article |
| 20–50 ms | Riot reported that gunfight outcomes among its highest-skilled, evenly matched players often came down to differences in this range in tested scenarios. It is not a finding across all games or matches. Riot’s VALORANT netcode article |
| About 10 ms | In a specific blind playtest, Riot said skilled participants could identify changes of about this size in peeker’s advantage. This is not a universal threshold for human perception. Riot’s VALORANT netcode article |
| 31 ms best; around 522 ms worst | Electronic Arts showed this range in one professional Apex Legends player’s network trace to illustrate a volatile route. It is a single example, not a typical pro’s ping or a target. EA’s Apex Legends networking article |
Riot’s networking overview describes VALORANT as rough above 60 ms and says League of Legends can remain playable at around 60 ms on average. These are game-specific contextual descriptions, not hard cutoffs or measurements of professional players’ usual ping. Riot’s networking overview

Why ping is not the whole experience
A ping reading measures network round-trip time; it does not capture the full delay from pressing a button to seeing the result. Input handling, client and server processing, rendering, tick timing, and buffering can all contribute to end-to-end latency. A game may buffer updates to smooth uneven packet arrivals, which can make perceived responsiveness differ from the displayed ping. Riot’s VALORANT netcode article
Stability matters alongside the average. Jitter is variation in latency over time; high jitter can lead a game to buffer more heavily to handle uneven packet arrivals. Packet loss means packets fail to reach their destination, and can cause disruption or delay. Riot recommends keeping packet loss as close to zero as possible. A low reading at one moment does not show whether ping is fluctuating or packets are being lost. Riot Games Support’s connection guide

How tournament ping can differ from home ping
Some major League of Legends events use a specially arranged local network and portable offline game servers. Riot describes these events as giving professionals priority access to a customized ecosystem optimized for latency and performance, with servers able to operate independently of the internet. This setup is intended to avoid network lag or packet loss during competition; it is not evidence that every esports event or game uses a LAN or the same equipment. Riot’s account of esports event infrastructure
That is why a tournament result should not be compared directly with a player’s home connection without knowing how each match was hosted. Online play depends on the route between the player and a remote server; a local event setup can change that path substantially.

How to make your own connection more reliable
- Check the selected game server. Confirm that the game is connecting to the intended region or server. Greater physical distance generally means higher latency.
- Check official server status. If latency or packet loss begins suddenly, check the game provider’s status information before changing your home setup.
- Watch network indicators over time. Use the game’s network graphs, when available, to observe ping, jitter, and packet loss during play rather than relying on one reading.
- Test a wired connection if you suspect local wireless instability. Ethernet can help isolate Wi-Fi-related instability, but it cannot change server geography, guarantee a better ISP route, or fix an outage.
- Look for the source of the problem. Riot groups possible causes into the game provider, ISP, and local software, equipment, or settings. If the issue persists, compare results at different times and contact the relevant provider with those observations. Riot Games Support’s connection guide
A faster internet package does not automatically mean lower game ping: distance and routing are central, while stability and local conditions also matter. Make changes based on evidence of a route, loss, or wireless problem rather than assuming a new router, cable, or speed tier will improve every connection.
Does high ping give a player an advantage?
Not automatically. Riot has documented player concerns about peeker’s advantage and studied how latency interacts with game networking, but those effects depend on multiple factors, including server and client behavior. Its reported VALORANT tests show that latency differences can matter in particular competitive scenarios; they do not establish that high ping is generally an advantage.
