Pi-hole can block many advertising, tracking, telemetry, malware, and nuisance hostnames for every device that actually uses it for DNS. It cannot reliably remove ads that share a hostname with wanted content, hide page elements, or control devices and apps that bypass its DNS path. Treat it as a network-wide hostname filter, then add browser-level filtering when you need cosmetic or page-specific control.

What Pi-hole is and how DNS blocking works

Pi-hole is a network-wide DNS sinkhole. A client first asks a DNS resolver to translate a hostname such as an advertising or analytics domain into an IP address. When the client is configured to use Pi-hole, that lookup reaches Pi-hole before the connection to the destination is made.

Pi-hole compares the requested hostname with its active blocklists, manually maintained deny entries, and regular-expression rules. For a match, it can refuse the lookup or return a non-routable address. The client therefore has no usable destination for that hostname and the request normally stops before content is downloaded. The Pi-hole project describes this as protecting devices from unwanted content “without installing any client-side software.”

This is a hostname decision, not a packet inspection or web-page editing operation. Pi-hole does not need an extension on every browser or an agent on every phone, television, or computer, but each client must send its DNS queries through Pi-hole for the method to work.

What Pi-hole can block

Advertising and tracking hostnames

Pi-hole can block advertising servers, analytics endpoints, tracking systems, telemetry collectors, and other unwanted domains when those hostnames appear on the lists you have enabled. The block applies wherever the same hostname is requested, so a repeated tracker used by several computers, phones, smart TVs, and other DNS-using devices can be stopped centrally rather than configured separately on each device.

Coverage is determined by the lists, not by the Pi-hole name alone. A hostname absent from every active list will resolve normally unless you add it yourself. Conversely, an overbroad list can block a hostname that a legitimate service needs.

Malware and nuisance domains

Security-focused and nuisance-domain lists can prevent lookups for domains associated with malicious activity or intrusive behavior. This is a preventive DNS control: it stops the client from reaching listed destinations, but it is not a complete malware detector and does not inspect files, scripts, or traffic after a connection has been allowed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom deny and regular-expression rules

You can add a specific domain to a deny list when a hostname is not covered by your imported lists. Regular-expression rules can match a family of related hostnames instead of one exact name. These controls are useful for a private network policy, but broad patterns increase the chance of breaking a service that shares infrastructure with something you intended to block.

Repeated requests across a household or small office

Because the decision is made at the DNS layer, one rule can affect many clients. It is especially useful for devices where installing a content-blocking extension is impractical, such as smart televisions and other appliances. The benefit exists only for requests that follow the Pi-hole DNS path; a device that uses a different resolver does not receive the same protection.

What Pi-hole cannot block reliably

Ads and content on the same hostname

DNS sees the hostname, not the individual advertisement, image, video, or article element requested from that host. If wanted content and an ad are served from the same hostname, blocking that hostname blocks both. Pi-hole has no DNS-level way to distinguish the two URLs or select only the advert.

Page-level and cosmetic elements

Pi-hole does not read a page’s HTML, remove an element from the document, rewrite a response, or apply a browser cosmetic rule. It cannot, by itself, hide an empty advert slot, rearrange a page, or remove a sponsored label after the page has loaded. Those jobs belong to a browser content blocker or another filtering layer that can inspect page requests and markup.

Clients that use another DNS path

A device configured with a different DNS server, encrypted DNS, a VPN, or a hard-coded endpoint can reduce or bypass Pi-hole coverage. Some clients also receive DNS settings independently of the household router. In those cases, the device can resolve a blocked hostname elsewhere even though Pi-hole is working correctly for clients that use it.

Guaranteed blocking for a particular app or streaming service

Service providers change hostnames, delivery systems, and app behavior. Advertising and wanted video may use shared infrastructure, and an app may move some requests to a different endpoint. Pi-hole can block a service-related hostname that appears on a current list, but its DNS design cannot promise permanent, universal blocking for every app or streaming platform without current, service-specific testing.

Why YouTube and in-app advertising often gets through

People commonly expect one blocked video-ad hostname to remove every advert in a video service. That expectation exceeds what DNS can see. If the advert and the requested video use the same hostname, blocking the host would also block the video. If the app obtains its media and advertising from changing or shared endpoints, a static domain list may not contain a separable advertising hostname at all.

Apps can also use their own encrypted DNS, a VPN route, or a hard-coded resolver. In that situation the app is not asking Pi-hole to resolve the hostname, so a Pi-hole rule cannot intervene. A browser content blocker may have more visibility into page requests and elements, while an app that does not expose those requests remains outside that layer too.

Why results vary from one network to another

Blocklist selection and quality

Lists are the main coverage control. A narrow, carefully maintained set may produce fewer false positives but miss more unwanted domains. A broad collection can catch more advertising and tracking hostnames while also blocking a dependency that a legitimate site or device needs. The number of queries blocked is therefore not a universal measure of quality.

A Raspberry Pi Ltd tutorial gives an illustrative range: many networks see between 10% and 50% of queries blocked. That figure is an example reported for networks with different traffic and list choices, not a promised result for every installation.

Allowlisting legitimate services

When a required service fails, determine which hostname was denied and add only that hostname to an allowlist if it is trusted and necessary. Allowlisting restores that lookup for clients using Pi-hole, but it also means the approved domain will no longer be stopped by the matching deny rule. Prefer a narrow exception over disabling an entire list or a broad pattern.

The actual DNS path

Pi-hole can protect a client only when the client sends its DNS query to Pi-hole. Setting Pi-hole as the DNS server on the network router is a common way to cover ordinary clients, but devices may still override that setting. Check individual device settings and look for encrypted-DNS or VPN configurations when a hostname appears to resolve despite a matching block rule.

Hardware and software requirements

Pi-hole is software, not a Raspberry Pi-only product. The project prerequisites call for at least 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of free storage, with 4 GB recommended. It supports actively maintained Linux distributions, including Raspberry Pi OS, so it can run on suitable hardware other than a Raspberry Pi.

  • Memory: at least 512 MB of RAM.
  • Storage: at least 2 GB free; 4 GB is recommended.
  • Operating system: an actively maintained supported Linux distribution, such as Raspberry Pi OS.
  • Network operation: persistent storage, suitable power, and reliable network connectivity for a self-hosted small-board installation.

A Raspberry Pi with persistent storage is a common self-hosting route, but the exact current model and accessory compatibility should be verified before purchase. The hardware must remain powered and connected; if it is unavailable, clients that depend on it for DNS may lose name resolution unless another resolver is configured.

How to deploy Pi-hole for the coverage you expect

  1. Choose supported hardware and an operating system. Meet the 512 MB RAM and storage requirements, install an actively maintained Linux distribution, and provide persistent storage, power, and network access.
  2. Install Pi-hole and select your upstream DNS arrangement. The sinkhole handles local filtering; an upstream resolver is still needed for hostnames that are not blocked.
  3. Make clients use Pi-hole. Configure the network’s DNS settings, commonly at the router, and check clients that maintain their own DNS, encrypted-DNS, or VPN settings.
  4. Enable appropriate blocklists. Start with lists relevant to advertising, tracking, telemetry, malware, or nuisance domains. Add more only when the coverage you need justifies the additional maintenance and possible breakage.
  5. Validate with real client traffic. Test a computer, phone, television, and any important appliance separately. A rule working for one device does not prove that every device is using the same DNS path.
  6. Resolve false positives narrowly. Identify the denied hostname needed by a legitimate service, add that hostname to the allowlist, and retest the service rather than removing all filtering.

A practical troubleshooting decision tree

An unwanted domain still loads

  • Confirm the affected device is configured to use Pi-hole rather than a secondary or provider-supplied resolver.
  • Check for encrypted DNS, a VPN, or an application-specific hard-coded endpoint.
  • Determine whether the request uses a hostname that is actually present in an active deny or regular-expression rule.
  • If the hostname is not listed, add it only after confirming that blocking it will not remove wanted content from the same host.

A legitimate site or device breaks

  • Identify the required hostname that was denied.
  • Allowlist that specific hostname and test again.
  • If a broad regular expression caused the problem, narrow the expression instead of permitting an entire domain family.

An advert remains on a page

  • Check whether the advert and wanted content share a hostname; DNS cannot separate them.
  • Recognize that removing page elements requires a browser-level content blocker or another layer that can inspect HTML and page requests.
  • For an app, check whether it bypasses Pi-hole through its own DNS, VPN, encryption, or hard-coded endpoint.

Pi-hole compared with other filtering layers

Approach Filtering layer Device scope Main bypass or limitation False-positive recovery
Pi-hole DNS hostnames Any configured DNS-using client on the network Alternate DNS, encrypted DNS, VPNs, hard-coded endpoints, and shared hostnames Add a hostname to a Pi-hole allowlist or adjust a deny/regular-expression rule
Browser content blocker Page requests, HTML, and cosmetic elements The browser where it is installed Does not automatically cover televisions, other apps, or devices without the blocker Adjust the browser’s site or filter rules
Other DNS filtering service DNS hostnames, depending on the service’s implementation and lists Clients configured to use that DNS service Coverage depends on DNS configuration, list quality, and the service’s controls Depends on the service’s allowlist and policy tools

These layers solve different problems. Pi-hole is useful when a single network policy should cover many DNS-capable devices. A browser blocker is better suited to page-specific decisions and cosmetic cleanup. Using both can provide hostname blocking at the network edge and element-level filtering in supported browsers.

Is Pi-hole enough to block ads and trackers on a whole network?

It is enough for a substantial DNS-based reduction when the network is configured correctly, the relevant hostnames are on maintained lists, and clients do not bypass the resolver. It is not a complete, universal ad-blocking system. Same-hostname advertising, page elements, changing service infrastructure, and clients outside the Pi-hole path remain outside reliable DNS control.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Pi-hole as the network-wide foundation, then decide whether each gap matters:

  • For browser page layout and cosmetic elements, add a browser content blocker.
  • For a device that ignores the network DNS setting, correct its DNS path or accept that it is outside coverage.
  • For a broken legitimate service, use a narrow allowlist exception.
  • For service-specific advertising claims, test the current app or website rather than assuming a permanent result from a hostname list.

The most accurate expectation is therefore “many unwanted domains blocked for participating clients,” not “every advert removed from every device.”
