Phone Hub is ChromeOS’s built-in connection panel for an Android phone. It can show your phone’s signal and battery, let you trigger actions such as hotspot, silence or locate the phone, display Android Chrome tabs, synchronize notifications, retrieve recent photos and screenshots, and—on a smaller list of supported phones—stream phone apps in a Chromebook window.
Basic Phone Hub support is broader than app streaming. Google lists ChromeOS M89 or later with Android 5.1 or later for Phone Hub itself. App streaming has additional Wi-Fi, proximity, permission and model requirements, so an Android phone that pairs successfully may still be unable to stream apps.
What Phone Hub is and what appears in it
Phone Hub is a connected-phone feature built into ChromeOS. After pairing, a phone control appears beside the time in the Chromebook shelf. Opening it provides a quick view of the phone and shortcuts that avoid picking up the handset for routine tasks.
Phone status at a glance
The panel can show the Android phone’s cellular signal and battery status. This is useful when the phone is in a bag or charging elsewhere, because you can check whether it is connected without opening a separate Android app.

Quick phone commands
Google lists commands for enabling the phone’s hotspot, silencing the phone and locating it. Availability can depend on the phone’s state and the permissions granted during setup. These controls are remote shortcuts, not a replacement for every setting in Android’s full Settings app.
Android Chrome tabs
Phone Hub can show tabs that are open in Chrome on the Android phone. Selecting a tab lets you continue reading on the Chromebook instead of searching for the same page again.
Notifications
Phone notifications can be synchronized to ChromeOS. You can control this feature rather than accepting every notification by default, which is useful when you want messages or alerts available on the larger screen but do not want a complete mirror of the phone.

Phone Hub can provide access to recent photos and screenshots from the Android phone, including an option to download them to the Chromebook. This is intended for recent items; it is not described as a complete file browser for the phone’s entire storage.

Phone-app streaming
On eligible phones, Phone Hub can stream Android apps to the Chromebook. The app remains installed on the phone while its interface is displayed and controlled from ChromeOS. Streaming is a separate capability with a narrower device list and stricter network conditions than ordinary Phone Hub pairing.
Basic Phone Hub requirements
Google’s Phone Hub help page gives the following baseline for the Phone Hub feature itself:

Google also says the listed Phone Hub features can continue to be used when the Chromebook is offline. That statement applies to the features on the Phone Hub page; functions that depend on a live network, such as browsing a phone’s online content or using mobile-data tethering, can still require connectivity.
A separate Google guide for connecting a phone to a Chromebook describes a broader set of connected-phone functions and gives different minimums: ChromeOS 71 and Android 6. Those figures belong to that broader guide, not a replacement for the Phone Hub page’s M89 and Android 5.1 baseline. Use the requirement that matches the function you are trying to use.

Which Android phones support app streaming?
Google’s published app-streaming list is specific. The support page names these phone groups:

The wording “select Android 13-or-later devices” matters. A phone with Android 13 is not automatically eligible merely because it meets the version number. Conversely, a model that is not in the named list should not be treated as supported based only on its processor, Android version or manufacturer. Google’s list is the relevant compatibility boundary, and software configuration can affect whether a particular handset works.
How to set up Phone Hub
- Turn on Bluetooth. Enable Bluetooth on both the Chromebook and the Android phone. Keep the devices close while pairing.
- Open the phone control. On the Chromebook, select the Phone control beside the time in the shelf.
- Start setup. Choose Get started, then select Accept and continue when ChromeOS presents the connection terms.
- Choose the Android-phone setup. In ChromeOS settings, open Connected devices and select the option to set up an Android phone.
- Follow the prompts on both screens. Confirm the phone shown by ChromeOS and complete any requested permissions or confirmations. The broader connected-phone guide says the Chromebook and phone should use the same Google Account; using the same account also prevents pairing the wrong handset when several phones are nearby.
- Choose individual features. After pairing, turn Phone Hub capabilities on or off individually. You can keep status and tabs enabled while disabling notifications, for example.
If the Phone control does not appear, first check the Chromebook version against the Phone Hub M89 baseline, verify Bluetooth, and make sure the intended phone is signed in and nearby. Work or school administration can also hide or restrict these controls.

Shared Wi-Fi and physical proximity
For streaming, the Chromebook and phone must share a Wi-Fi network and remain close to each other. Google warns that some public or private Wi-Fi networks do not support the required connection. A successful Bluetooth pairing therefore does not prove that streaming will work.

When the current Wi-Fi environment blocks streaming, Google says Instant Tethering can help. This uses the phone’s connection path instead of relying on the problematic network. It does not remove the need for an eligible phone or the other streaming requirements.
Permissions on the phone
Streaming requires permissions for notifications, photos and media, and apps. If one of these permissions is denied, Phone Hub may pair normally while app streaming remains unavailable or incomplete. Review the phone’s permission prompts and Android settings rather than repeatedly restarting the Chromebook.
Why a stream can stop
Google lists inactivity, distance and connection errors as reasons a stream may end. Keep the phone near the Chromebook, maintain the shared connection, and reopen the app from Phone Hub after correcting the condition. Some entertainment apps may also behave unexpectedly because of digital-rights-management policies; that is an app restriction, not necessarily a Phone Hub failure.
Other connected-phone functions and their separate requirements
Google’s general phone-connection guide covers functions that overlap with Phone Hub but are documented separately. It describes syncing chat notifications and photos, sending and receiving text messages on the Chromebook, connecting to the phone network and using the phone to unlock the Chromebook. That guide lists ChromeOS 71 and Android 6 as its minimum versions and says both devices should use the same Google Account.

Phone-based Chromebook unlock (Smart Lock)
Smart Lock has its own prerequisites. Google says the phone must run Android L-MR1 or later, be unlocked, have Bluetooth enabled and use a screen lock. The Chromebook needs an internet connection and must use the same Google Account as the phone. These conditions are separate from the Phone Hub M89/Android 5.1 baseline, so an otherwise compatible Phone Hub pairing does not guarantee Smart Lock.
Phone network sharing and Instant Hotspot
Google’s tethering guidance requires ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account on both devices and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. A mobile carrier may impose data limits or extra charges, and sharing mobile data can drain the phone’s battery faster. Check the carrier plan before using the Chromebook as a regular mobile connection.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The phone pairs, but a feature is missing
- Check that the feature is actually available in your ChromeOS and Android versions; the separate guides do not all use the same minimums.
- Open the Phone Hub controls and confirm that the individual feature is enabled.
- For notifications, photos or app streaming, revisit the corresponding permissions on the phone.
- If the Chromebook belongs to a company or school, ask the administrator whether connected-phone features are blocked.
App streaming is unavailable even though Phone Hub works
- Compare the exact phone model with Google’s named list: Pixel 4a or later, Nothing Phone (1) or (2), or the listed Xiaomi models.
- Check the required Android version where Google specifies Android 13 or later.
- Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi network and keep them close.
- Try Instant Tethering if the current public or private network does not permit streaming.
- Accept permissions for notifications, photos and media, and apps.
The stream disconnects after starting
- Move the phone closer and prevent it from becoming inactive.
- Test the Wi-Fi connection; a network change can interrupt the session.
- Reopen the app after a connection error.
- If only a particular entertainment app fails, check whether its DRM behavior prevents streaming.
A practical compatibility checklist
Before treating a phone as compatible, check each layer rather than relying on the Android version alone:

- Exclude work or school policy restrictions before troubleshooting hardware or software.
This layered check explains the most common apparent contradiction: a phone can be fully usable with Phone Hub for status, tabs, notifications or photos while still being ineligible for app streaming.
