Review every permission requested by the wearable’s companion app rather than accepting setup prompts automatically. Start with camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos and videos, Bluetooth or nearby devices, and notifications. Then check less obvious requests such as calendar, health, motion, phone, SMS, local-network access, tracking, and account or cloud-sharing controls. Allow a category only when it supports a feature you intend to use.
Phone-level permissions are only one privacy layer. The companion app may separately control captures, voice processing, notifications, imports, and information shared with its provider. The exact list and labels depend on the wearable, phone model, operating-system version, app version, feature, and region.
Use this permission checklist before pairing
Write down the features you actually plan to use—such as hands-free calling, visual questions, navigation, audio playback, or photo transfer—then compare them with the app’s requests. The following review questions keep each permission tied to a purpose.

| Camera | Does the app need camera access for a feature I will use, or is it requesting access for another function? | Visual capture and camera-based AI prompts are separate uses. A wearable may use the camera to identify a landmark or plant, while the app may also manage captured media. |
| Microphone or speech recognition | Do I want hands-free voice commands, audio capture, calls, or speech features? | Microphone access can support voice interaction and recording. It is distinct from camera access and should be reviewed independently. |
| Location | Is a location-aware feature worth sharing location, and does it need background access? | Navigation, nearby-device functions, or location-aware answers may request location. The broadest setting is not automatically necessary. |
| Contacts | Do I want calling or messaging features that use my address book? | Contacts access exposes address-book information to the app. Keep it off when those linked features are not wanted. |
| Photos and videos | Does the app need the existing phone library, or only media that I explicitly import from the wearable? | Access to the phone’s library is different from capturing on the wearable and transferring selected files. |
| Bluetooth, nearby devices, or local network | Is this needed to pair, reconnect, or communicate with the wearable? | Android uses a nearby-devices category; iPhone exposes Bluetooth and local-network controls. Labels and setup flows vary. |
| Notifications | Do I want setup status, device alerts, or assistant messages on my phone? | Phone notification permission and the app’s own notification preferences are separate decisions. |
| Calendar, health, motion, phone, SMS, or other data | Does the feature I intend to use need this category, and does the app explain why? | Android lists calendar, health and wellness, physical activity, phone, SMS, and additional categories. A request without a clear feature explanation deserves scrutiny. |
| Tracking and data sharing | What does the app say it shares, stores, or processes in the cloud, and which choices can I change? | Operating-system permission screens do not describe every account, analytics, AI-processing, or sharing choice. |
Do not assume that denying an optional permission makes the wearable unusable. It may disable one feature while leaving pairing, playback, or another function available. The app’s explanation and the feature you selected should determine the decision.

Camera access: separate visual AI from ordinary capture
Identify the intended use
Camera access can support two fundamentally different activities: taking photos or videos and sending what the camera sees to an AI assistant for a prompt. For example, Meta describes asking its AI glasses to identify a landmark or plant. If you do not plan to use visual questions or capture, camera access may not be necessary for your setup.
Check the physical signal, but do not treat it as consent
For Meta’s glasses, Meta’s July 7, 2026 FAQ says a white capture LED blinks during gallery capture and has no off switch. The same FAQ says second-generation glasses disable the camera when the LED is blocked and describes camera disablement when later updates detect physical tampering. Those statements apply to the product generations and date covered by Meta’s document; they are not universal specifications for every AI wearable.
A visible indicator cannot replace judgment or permission from people nearby. Meta advises asking before photographing or recording people and avoiding sensitive locations or places where privacy is expected. That is product guidance, not a universal legal rule, so follow applicable law and the venue’s rules as well.

Match access to hands-free features
Allow microphone access when you want voice commands, spoken questions, calls, or audio recording. If you intend to use the wearable only for playback or manually triggered functions, ask whether microphone access is needed at all. Read the prompt’s explanation instead of treating a microphone request as an unavoidable part of pairing.
Use the phone’s indicators and history
Apple states that an iPhone app must request permission and explain why before using the camera or microphone. iPhone also provides a hardware-access control and indicators for microphone use. Android and iPhone both offer ways to review access after setup, so an unexpected microphone use is a reason to inspect the app rather than simply dismissing the alert.

Location: choose the narrowest useful setting
Location can enable navigation, location-aware answers, finding nearby devices, or other contextual functions. It can also reveal a detailed record of where the phone and wearer travel. Ask whether the feature works while the app is open, then avoid a broader background setting unless the app clearly explains why it needs one.
On Android, location choices can include all the time, while using the app, ask every time, or don’t allow, depending on the version and device. Use the least permissive option that supports your chosen feature. On iPhone, review the Location Services category and change the app’s access after the initial prompt if your usage changes.
Contacts, calls, and messages
Contacts access can enable calling or messaging from the wearable, but it exposes names, numbers, and other address-book data to the companion app. Grant it only if you want those functions. If you later decide not to use calling or messaging, revoke Contacts access and review separate Phone or SMS permissions where the operating system presents them.
Because contacts belong to other people as well as you, consider whether importing the entire address book is justified by the convenience of hands-free communication. A wearable that only plays audio or answers general questions should not automatically receive your contacts.
Photos and videos: distinguish capture, import, and library access
Three different operations
- Capture: the wearable’s camera creates a new photo or video.
- Import: the app moves selected files from the wearable to the phone.
- Library access: the app can read existing photos and videos already stored on the phone.
These operations can have different controls. An app may need Photos access to save an imported file but not to browse your entire library. Use the most limited photo-selection option your phone offers, and check whether the app can import only items you choose.

Storage behavior can differ by product
Meta says photos and videos captured for the gallery remain on its glasses until the owner chooses to move them to the phone with the app. That storage statement is specific to Meta’s documented product behavior; do not generalize it to another wearable. Review where captures are stored, when they are uploaded, and how deletion works in the app’s current privacy information.

Bluetooth, nearby devices, and local network
Pairing normally requires a short-range connection. Android may label this as Nearby devices, while iPhone exposes Bluetooth and, for some functions, Local Network. These permissions can allow discovery, connection, synchronization, firmware delivery, or communication between the phone and wearable.
Grant the permission when you are pairing or using a feature that clearly depends on it. If the wearable remains connected after you disable an optional network permission, leave it disabled and test the features you care about. If pairing fails, re-enable only the relevant category, complete pairing, and then review whether the permission can be narrowed without breaking the connection.
Notifications and background activity
Notifications can report battery state, connection status, firmware updates, assistant responses, or incoming calls. Decide whether those alerts are useful enough to appear on your phone’s lock screen or notification shade. After granting the system permission, open the companion app and review its own notification categories; an operating-system allowance does not mean every in-app alert must remain enabled.
Also inspect background activity and battery settings where your phone provides them. A wearable app may need to run in the background for reconnection or alerts, but continuous background operation can increase data access and battery use. Keep only the behavior required for the feature you selected.

Calendar, health, motion, phone, SMS, and other requests
Android lists calendar, health and wellness, physical activity, phone, SMS, and additional permission categories. Treat each as a feature-specific decision. Calendar access might support schedule reminders; motion data might support activity-aware behavior; phone or SMS access might support communications. If the app does not connect the request to a feature you want, deny it and see whether setup still completes.
Do not infer that an AI wearable needs health or motion data merely because the category exists on the phone. Requirements vary by model, software version, enabled services, and region. Revisit these categories after an update because a newly added feature may create a new prompt.
Account, tracking, and cloud-processing controls
Phone permissions do not describe everything an app can collect. Read the companion app’s privacy disclosure for account identifiers, diagnostics, voice and image processing, retention, sharing, and deletion. Google Play’s Data safety section can provide additional information about what an Android app says it accesses and uses, but treat it as a summary rather than a substitute for the app’s current privacy controls.
Look for settings that govern captures, voice, notifications, personalization, and information shared with the provider. Meta says its Meta AI app provides preferences for captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Other wearable makers may use different labels or offer fewer controls, so rely on the documentation for the app you installed.

- Open Settings > Apps > [companion app] > Permissions to inspect permissions for that specific app.
- Alternatively, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager to review apps grouped by permission type.
- Select Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, Photos and videos, Nearby devices, or another category, then choose the narrowest available option that supports your intended feature.
- For location, compare all-the-time, while-using, ask-every-time, and don’t-allow choices where your phone provides them.
- Open Privacy Dashboard to see which apps accessed camera, location, and microphone during the last 24 hours on supported versions.
- After changing a setting, test one feature at a time and note what stopped working before deciding whether to restore access.
Android’s Google Play Help describes the principle plainly: “You can allow some apps to use various features on your device, such as your camera or contacts list.” That wording emphasizes choice; it is not an instruction to approve every prompt.
iPhone: review categories and enable an audit report
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Review Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth, Contacts, Photos, and Location Services individually.
- Change access after granting or denying it if your feature needs change. Use the most limited photo, location, or contact choice available for the task.
- Open App Privacy Report and turn it on if you want a record of permission use and network activity.
- Wait for new activity to accumulate, then review the report’s seven-day view of data and sensor access.
App Privacy Report starts collecting only after you enable it, so it cannot reconstruct activity from before activation. Apple’s hardware guidance says apps must request permission and explain why before using the iPhone camera or microphone; use that explanation as part of your decision.
Review the companion app after the operating-system prompt
Complete the phone-level review, then open the wearable app itself. Look for separate pages or toggles for:
- automatic captures and uploads;
- voice activation, wake words, and audio processing;
- notifications and lock-screen content;
- photo and video import destinations;
- cloud processing, account personalization, and information shared with the provider;
- deletion, retention, download, and account-disconnection options.
This second pass matters because an allowed camera permission does not tell you whether the app uploads every capture, and a denied Photos permission does not explain where the wearable stores files locally. The app’s current disclosure is the place to verify those behaviors.
A practical grant-or-deny decision rule
| Situation | Recommended choice | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| The permission directly enables a feature you intend to use. | Allow the narrowest option available. | Check the app’s related capture, voice, or sharing setting. |
| The feature is optional or you are only exploring setup. | Deny, ask every time, or choose while using when offered. | Test whether pairing and essential functions still work. |
| The prompt is unexplained or unrelated to your planned use. | Keep it denied. | Read the app’s privacy information or contact its support channel before reconsidering. |
| A permission is needed only once for pairing or import. | Grant it temporarily if your phone supports that choice. | Revoke it after the task and verify the feature you still need. |
| An update adds a new request. | Pause and reassess rather than accepting automatically. | Check the release notes and current privacy disclosure. |
What to do when denying a permission breaks setup
- Record the exact feature that failed—pairing, voice, visual questions, calling, import, or notifications.
- Reopen the app’s permission page and enable only the category plausibly connected to that feature.
- Restart the app or reconnect the wearable, then test the single feature again.
- If it works, leave unrelated categories disabled and adjust in-app settings for captures, voice, and notifications.
- If it still fails, check the wearable maker’s current support documentation for your model, app version, phone operating system, and region. Do not assume a permission requirement for one model applies to another.
When a feature requires a broad permission, weigh its benefit against the data exposed. If the trade-off is not acceptable, use the wearable without that feature or remove the app’s access rather than enabling everything permanently.
Keep the review current
Repeat this audit after an operating-system upgrade, companion-app update, firmware change, account change, or newly enabled feature. Android and iPhone labels can change, and wearable apps can add controls or requests over time. Use Android’s Privacy Dashboard or Permission Manager and iPhone’s App Privacy Report to compare what you intended to allow with what the app actually accessed.
Finally, remember that social privacy is separate from device privacy. A capture light, an on-screen indicator, or a permission setting does not tell people around you that recording is welcome. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance, ask before capturing people, and avoid places where privacy is expected.
