For a Live2D VTuber model, you need a 64-bit Windows PC or Mac that meets VTube Studio’s requirements, VTube Studio itself, and OBS or Streamlabs for scenes, recording, and livestream output. Face tracking can come from a webcam or a compatible phone. A webcam with at least 1280×720 resolution running at 15–30 FPS is the documented baseline. An iPhone or iPad with Face ID or an A12-or-newer chip is the strongest optional tracking source in VTube Studio’s own guidance. If your avatar is a VRoid or other VRM 3D model, use a 3D tracker such as VSeeFace instead: VTube Studio is for Live2D Cubism models and does not support VRM.

Start with the model format

The software choice is determined first by whether your avatar is 2D or 3D.

Live2D Cubism models

VTube Studio is a Live2D Cubism application. It loads a rigged Live2D model, reads facial movement from a camera or phone, and applies that movement to the model in real time. Your model therefore needs to be exported for Live2D and prepared with the parameters that the tracker can control, such as eye opening, blinking, mouth movement, head angle, and eye direction.

VRoid and other VRM models

VTube Studio’s documentation is explicit: “VTube Studio DOES NOT support 3D models (VRoid/VRM is not supported).” A VRoid Studio avatar is a VRM model, so installing VTube Studio will not make it usable. Use a 3D-focused tracker such as VSeeFace, then send that application’s output to your streaming software. The computer, camera, and lighting considerations still matter, but the model application and tracking pipeline are different.

PC requirements for VTube Studio

The figures below come from DenchiSoft’s Steam listing, dated 2021 and retrieved in 2026. They describe VTube Studio alone. Running OBS or Streamlabs, a browser with alerts, a game, voice chat, and other creator tools simultaneously requires additional headroom.

Platform and tier CPU Memory Graphics API Storage
Windows minimum 64-bit AMD or Intel processor at 1.8 GHz or higher 4 GB RAM AMD or NVIDIA graphics with at least 2 GB dedicated VRAM DirectX 11 3 GB available
Windows recommended 64-bit AMD or Intel processor at 2.5 GHz or higher 6 GB RAM AMD or NVIDIA graphics with at least 4 GB dedicated VRAM DirectX 11 4 GB available
macOS minimum Not stated in the cited listing 4 GB RAM 2 GB VRAM Not stated in the cited listing Not stated in the cited listing
macOS recommended Not stated in the cited listing 6 GB RAM 4 GB VRAM Not stated in the cited listing Not stated in the cited listing

What the minimum means in practice

The 4 GB RAM and 2 GB dedicated-VRAM Windows minimum can launch the model application, but it leaves little room for a game, a browser source, or a compositor. The 6 GB RAM and 4 GB-VRAM recommendation is a better floor for a creator workstation, not a guarantee of a particular stream frame rate. Integrated graphics may not satisfy the stated dedicated-VRAM requirement, so check the GPU specification rather than relying on the computer’s total shared graphics memory.

Allow headroom for the complete workload

VTube Studio renders the avatar while OBS or Streamlabs captures it and may encode video at the same time. A game adds another sustained CPU and GPU load; browser alerts and animated overlays add smaller but continuous loads. If you are buying a system rather than using an existing one, treat the recommended tier as the application baseline and choose more memory and graphics capacity when you plan to play modern games, run several scenes, or record locally while broadcasting.

The listing’s Windows operating-system entries are 64-bit Windows 7 minimum and 64-bit Windows 10 recommended. Those are the versions stated in that 2021 listing; verify current compatibility for your installed operating system before purchase, particularly if you are using a newer Windows release or a recent macOS version.

Webcam requirements and placement

VTube Studio’s official requirements state: “Generally, a resolution of 1280×720 or above is recommended for good eye- and blink-tracking.” The same guidance says frame rates between 15 and 30 FPS are sufficient for good tracking. That makes a 720p USB webcam at 15–30 FPS a defensible entry point. A 1080p camera can provide a cleaner image, but the documentation does not make 1080p mandatory.

Image quality is only one variable

  • Face visibility: Keep your eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth unobstructed. Heavy shadows or a bright window behind you can reduce the contrast the tracker needs.
  • Lighting: Use even light from in front of your face. More pixels do not compensate for a dark face, blown-out highlights, or changing illumination.
  • Camera position: Place the lens close to eye level and keep your head within the frame while you sit in your normal streaming position.
  • Frame rate: Stay within the documented 15–30 FPS range and avoid applications that repeatedly change the camera’s frame rate while VTube Studio is running.

The official material does not establish an independent benchmark comparing latency, expression accuracy, or lighting performance among specific webcam brands. Choose based on the documented resolution and frame-rate baseline, then prioritize a stable image and predictable lighting.

Using an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone for tracking

A phone is optional: VTube Studio can receive tracking from a webcam, a connected iPhone or iPad, or a compatible Android device. The phone runs the face-tracking portion while the PC renders the Live2D model. The requirements guide describes tracking data being sent over the local network.

iOS compatibility

VTube Studio supports an iPhone or iPad with Face ID or an Apple A12-or-newer chip. In the official quality summary, the order is “iOS > Webcam > Android.” In other words, a supported iOS device is the preferred option in that guide when tracking quality is the priority. It is still an optional purchase: a compliant webcam can run the setup without a phone.

Android compatibility

An Android phone must support Google ARCore. Compatibility is not determined by the Android version alone; check whether the exact handset is ARCore-supported. The guide ranks Android below webcam and iOS for tracking quality, so use it when you already own a compatible device or when its convenience outweighs that ranking.

Network and practical considerations

Because phone tracking sends data to the computer over the local network, both devices need a working network path and the appropriate VTube Studio components. If the phone is visible to the tracker but the model does not move on the computer, check that both devices are on the same reachable network, that local-network access is allowed, and that a firewall is not blocking the connection. A phone also needs a stable mount and enough battery for the entire session; those are operational concerns rather than requirements for model compatibility.

Which software belongs in the VTuber stack?

Job Software or device What it does
Model renderer and Live2D tracker VTube Studio Loads the Live2D Cubism model and applies face-tracking data.
3D model renderer and tracker VSeeFace or another VRM-capable tracker Handles VRoid/VRM avatars that VTube Studio cannot load.
Tracking source Webcam, compatible iPhone/iPad, or ARCore Android phone Captures facial movement and sends it to the model application.
Production and broadcast OBS or Streamlabs Captures the avatar, combines scenes and sources, records, and sends the stream.

VTube Studio’s Steam listing says it works with OBS, Streamlabs, or other streaming software. The usual chain is therefore camera or phone → tracker/model application → OBS or Streamlabs → recording or livestream service. The broadcaster captures the VTube Studio window or output; it does not replace the tracker.

Choosing a setup: quality, cost, and complexity

Setup Model format Tracking source Strengths Trade-offs
Entry-level Live2D Live2D 720p webcam at 15–30 FPS Lowest device count and straightforward setup Tracking depends more on lighting, camera placement, and image quality
iOS Live2D Live2D Face ID or A12-or-newer iPhone/iPad Highest tracking ranking in VTube Studio’s guide; phone handles capture while PC renders Requires a compatible Apple device, local-network connection, and a mount or power plan
Android Live2D Live2D Google ARCore-compatible Android phone Uses an existing compatible handset and avoids buying a webcam Android is ranked below webcam and iOS in the guide; exact handset compatibility matters
VRoid/VRM 3D VRM/VRoid Webcam or tracker-supported phone Works with a 3D-focused application such as VSeeFace Cannot use VTube Studio; requires a separate 3D tracking pipeline

For a new Live2D creator who already owns a computer, start with the webcam you have if it meets the 720p and 15–30 FPS guidance. Select iOS tracking when you already own a supported device and want the quality ranking documented by VTube Studio. Do not buy hardware to solve a model-format mismatch: a VRM avatar needs a VRM-capable tracker regardless of camera choice.

Step-by-step setup for a Live2D model

1. Check the computer before installing

  1. Confirm that Windows is 64-bit, or verify that your Mac meets the applicable VTube Studio tier.
  2. Check installed RAM and dedicated GPU memory against the table above.
  3. Leave additional capacity for OBS or Streamlabs, your game, browser sources, and recording. Close unnecessary applications during the first test so you can distinguish a configuration problem from resource exhaustion.

2. Install and load the model

  1. Install VTube Studio and place your Live2D model where the application can import it.
  2. Open the model and confirm that it responds to manual controls or idle animation before troubleshooting tracking. If the model will not load, verify that it is a Live2D Cubism model rather than VRM.
  3. Set the model’s position and scale in the canvas so the framing matches the scene you intend to capture.

3. Configure a webcam

  1. Connect the webcam and close other applications that may have exclusive control of it.
  2. Select the camera in VTube Studio and confirm that it reports a resolution of at least 1280×720 and a stable 15–30 FPS mode.
  3. Turn on even front lighting, adjust the lens to eye level, and perform the application’s calibration or tracking setup with a neutral expression.
  4. Test blinking, eyebrow movement, mouth opening, and head turns. If one movement fails, improve face visibility and camera placement before assuming the model is defective.

4. Configure phone tracking

  1. On iOS, use an iPhone or iPad with Face ID or an A12-or-newer chip. On Android, confirm Google ARCore support for the exact phone.
  2. Install and open the required VTube Studio mobile component, then connect it to the desktop application over the local network.
  3. Allow camera and local-network permissions when prompted. Keep the phone’s face unobstructed and mount it so the tracking view remains steady.
  4. Calibrate with a neutral face, then test the same expressions used in the webcam test. Keep the phone powered for a long session.

5. Add OBS or Streamlabs

  1. Install OBS or Streamlabs and create a scene for the avatar.
  2. Add VTube Studio as the appropriate window or application capture source, then add your microphone, game capture, alerts, and other sources.
  3. Preview the complete scene while moving, speaking, and switching sources. Watch for dropped frames, audio delay, or a capture source that shows the wrong window before going live.
  4. Record a short local test. Review the recording for facial motion, framing, audio sync, and GPU or CPU overload, then adjust one setting at a time.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The model loads but does not move

  • Confirm that VTube Studio has permission to use the selected webcam or phone.
  • Check that another application is not holding the camera.
  • Improve front lighting and remove anything covering the eyes or mouth.
  • For phone tracking, verify local-network reachability and firewall permissions.
  • Recalibrate with a neutral expression after changing the camera position.

The model is smooth in VTube Studio but the stream stutters

  • Test VTube Studio by itself, then add OBS or Streamlabs and finally the game. This isolates which workload consumes the available headroom.
  • Compare your system with the recommended 6 GB RAM and 4 GB dedicated-VRAM tier rather than only the minimum figures.
  • Reduce unnecessary browser sources and overlays, and check the broadcaster’s performance indicators while recording.

The phone will not connect

  • Ensure the computer and phone can reach each other on the local network.
  • Recheck iOS hardware eligibility or Android ARCore support.
  • Allow local-network and camera permissions and review firewall rules that could block the connection.
  • If the phone remains unreliable, switch temporarily to a webcam to determine whether the model and desktop application work independently.

A VRoid model will not open in VTube Studio

This is expected, not a tracking failure. VTube Studio does not support VRoid/VRM. Keep the model in a VRM-capable application such as VSeeFace and capture that application in OBS or Streamlabs.

A practical buying decision

Use the existing equipment path whenever it satisfies the documented requirements. For Live2D, that means a 64-bit computer with at least the listed memory and dedicated graphics, a webcam at 1280×720 or higher and 15–30 FPS, VTube Studio, and OBS or Streamlabs. Add a compatible iPhone or iPad only when its higher tracking ranking and freedom from a USB webcam justify the extra device and network setup. Choose a 3D tracker instead of VTube Studio when the avatar is VRoid or VRM. These decisions prevent the two most expensive mistakes: upgrading a camera when the computer lacks headroom, and trying to solve an incompatible model format with different tracking hardware.
