For open-world games, the graphics card and processor matter most, but neither can be chosen in isolation. Start with the specific game’s official requirements at the resolution, graphics preset, frame rate and ray-tracing mode you want. Then match the GPU, CPU, VRAM, system RAM and storage type to that target. A component that is adequate for 1080p at 30 frames per second may be unsuitable for 4K at 60 FPS, even in the same game.
There is no universal ranking of “best” PC specifications for every open-world title. The workload changes with the game engine, world size, streaming system, resolution, visual preset and effects such as ray tracing. The current Cyberpunk 2077 requirements provide a useful illustration of how dramatically the target changes.
Which PC components matter most?
Think of an open-world gaming PC as a matched system rather than a list headed by one expensive part. The GPU draws each frame, the CPU handles game logic and simulation, memory keeps assets available, and storage feeds those assets to the system. Your monitor resolution and desired frame rate determine how demanding each part must be.
Graphics card (GPU)
The GPU is usually the first specification to compare when you raise resolution, graphics quality or ray-tracing settings. A game’s requirement may name a model, a VRAM capacity and a performance tier together. Compare all three, not just the model number. Two cards with similar names can have different memory capacities, and insufficient VRAM can cause texture reductions, stutter or failed settings even when average frame rate looks acceptable.

Processor (CPU)
The CPU runs world simulation, artificial intelligence, physics, background tasks and the draw-call preparation that feeds the GPU. Large cities, dense crowds and games with many simultaneous systems can be processor-intensive. A fast GPU cannot guarantee a high frame rate if the CPU cannot prepare frames quickly enough, particularly at lower resolutions where the GPU has less work per frame.
Video memory (VRAM) and system RAM
VRAM and RAM are separate resources. VRAM stores textures, frame buffers and other graphics data on the card; system RAM holds game code, world data and operating-system tasks. Official requirements often list both, and meeting one does not compensate for falling short on the other.
Storage
Modern open worlds stream assets while you move through the map. An SSD reduces loading time and improves streaming compared with an HDD. That does not establish a fixed FPS increase: the benefit is faster data access and fewer storage-related delays, not a guaranteed frame-rate uplift. Capacity also matters because the game, updates and downloadable content must fit with free space left for normal system operation.

Write down the outcome you actually want:
- Resolution: 1920×1080, 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 (4K).
- Preset: low, medium, high, ultra or a custom mix.
- Frame-rate goal: for example, a 30 FPS console-like target or 60 FPS for a smoother experience.
- Features: ray tracing, path tracing, frame generation and upscaling can change the required tier.
- Display: refresh rate and adaptive-sync support determine whether a higher frame rate is useful.
Only compare a game’s requirements after fixing these choices. “Will my PC run it?” is incomplete without the game, mode and output resolution.
Cyberpunk 2077 shows why the target changes the parts list
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as both graphics- and processor-intensive. Its current Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty PC table lists different hardware for each intended result. The figures below are requirements for that game and tier, not universal minimums for all open-world games.
| Target published for Cyberpunk 2077 | CPU listed | GPU listed | VRAM | System RAM | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, low preset, 30 FPS, non-ray-traced | Intel Core i7-6700 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB, AMD Radeon RX 580 8 GB or Intel Arc A380 | 6 GB | 12 GB | 70 GB SSD |
| 1080p, high preset, 60 FPS, non-ray-traced | Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 | 8 GB | 16 GB | 70 GB SSD |
| 2160p (4K), ultra preset, 60 FPS, non-ray-traced | Intel Core i9-12900 or AMD Ryzen 9 7900X | NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX | 12 GB | 20 GB | 70 GB SSD |
| 2160p (4K), ray-tracing Overdrive, 60 FPS | Not stated separately in the cited row | NVIDIA RTX 4080 | 16 GB | 24 GB | 70 GB SSD |
The 4K Overdrive measurement used DLSS Frame Generation. CD PROJEKT RED published the revised requirements on June 11, 2023, explaining that the minimum target represented 1080p, low settings and an average of 30 FPS. The company also cautions that performance varies with hardware and software configuration, individual settings and output resolution. Treat every row as a target under stated conditions, not a promise for every computer.
How to interpret each specification
GPU: match the resolution and visual features
At 1080p, the GPU renders fewer pixels than at 4K, so the processor can become the limiting component sooner. At 4K, the GPU normally carries the heavier load. Ray tracing adds additional calculations for lighting and reflections, while path-tracing modes can raise the requirement again. If a game publishes separate ray-tracing rows, use the row matching your intended mode rather than the non-ray-traced recommendation.

Upscaling and frame generation may make a demanding mode playable, but they do not erase the underlying hardware requirement. Check whether the game’s stated FPS includes those technologies and whether your GPU supports the required implementation.
CPU: watch simulation-heavy scenarios
Compare the processor named for your target tier, then consider the situations that stress it: crowded hubs, vehicle traffic, combat involving many actors and rapid movement through a dense world. A CPU can limit performance even when GPU utilization is below maximum. A higher refresh-rate monitor makes this imbalance more visible because the processor must prepare frames more frequently.
VRAM: do not substitute system memory
Use the game’s VRAM figure as a floor for the chosen settings. Lowering texture quality can reduce VRAM pressure, but it may not solve shortages caused by high-resolution buffers or ray tracing. Adding system RAM does not add VRAM; the capacities serve different purposes.
System RAM: leave room for the operating system
Requirements are measured with the game and operating system running, so installing exactly the listed amount leaves little headroom for background applications. The Cyberpunk table moves from 12 GB at its 1080p low tier to 16 GB at 1080p high, 20 GB at 4K ultra and 24 GB for 4K Overdrive. Those figures illustrate how the target, not the “open-world” label alone, determines memory needs.
SSD: prioritize capacity and compatibility
Install the game on an SSD when the official requirement specifies one. Check whether your motherboard accepts the drive’s form factor and interface, and buy enough capacity for the game, updates and other software. An internal SSD is the relevant category for a desktop or laptop upgrade; verify physical clearance and available connectors before purchasing.
Check your current PC before buying anything
Rockstar Support recommends Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) for collecting the information needed for a compatibility comparison. Use this procedure:
- Press Windows key + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - On the System tab, record the Windows version, processor and installed memory.
- Open the Display or Render tab, depending on your Windows and driver layout.
- Record the graphics-card name, approximate video memory and driver details.
- Check File Explorer or Windows Settings for the drive containing the game and confirm that it is an SSD with at least the stated free capacity.
- Compare each value with the game’s current official requirements for your selected resolution, preset and frame-rate target.
Dxdiag reports hardware and driver information; it does not certify that a particular game will hold a fixed frame rate. Drivers, patches, thermals, background software and settings can change the result.

Upgrade the component that misses your chosen tier
After the comparison, identify the first hard limit instead of replacing parts at random.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- GPU below the tier: expect to reduce resolution, preset, ray tracing or texture quality, or plan a graphics-card upgrade.
- CPU below the tier: lowering resolution may not help much; a processor or platform upgrade may be needed for steadier frame times.
- VRAM below the tier: reduce texture and ray-tracing settings or choose a card with more VRAM.
- RAM below the tier: add compatible modules, observing the motherboard’s capacity and memory configuration limits.
- No suitable SSD: install the game on a compatible SSD with adequate free space.
Before ordering an upgrade, verify motherboard socket and firmware support for a new CPU, power-supply capacity and connectors for a new GPU, case length and thickness, cooling, available memory slots, and the laptop’s upgrade limitations. The official requirements identify a target; they do not validate every combination of parts.
Common mistakes to avoid
Using one game as a universal benchmark
Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrates a range of targets, but its rows cannot establish minimum specifications for every open-world title. Always consult the current requirements for each game you intend to play.
Comparing model names without conditions
A GPU recommendation is meaningful only with its resolution, preset, frame rate, VRAM and ray-tracing conditions. A CPU recommendation likewise depends on the game’s simulation workload and target frame rate.
Assuming “minimum” means 60 FPS
In CD PROJEKT RED’s explanation, the Cyberpunk 2077 minimum targeted an average of 30 FPS at 1080p and low settings. Minimum, recommended and enthusiast tiers can represent very different experiences.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Expecting an SSD to fix every performance problem
An SSD improves loading and streaming compared with an HDD, but it cannot compensate for a GPU or CPU that falls short of the selected tier.
A repeatable buying and troubleshooting workflow
- List the open-world games you actually plan to play.
- For each game, select a resolution, preset, frame rate and ray-tracing mode.
- Copy the current official CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM and storage requirements for that exact row.
- Use dxdiag and your storage settings to record your own specifications.
- Mark each category as meeting, exceeding or missing the target.
- Change the setting tied to the failing component, or upgrade that component after checking platform compatibility.
- After installation, update the game and graphics driver, select the intended preset, and evaluate frame-time stability as well as average FPS.
This process keeps the decision tied to a measurable outcome instead of an arbitrary “gaming PC” specification. Requirements can be updated, so check the developer’s current page immediately before buying or upgrading.
