The right PC depends on which space sandbox survival games you intend to play and what settings you expect. Compare the processor model and instruction support, graphics card and VRAM, system memory, Windows version, storage capacity, and—when specified—SSD type. Empyrion – Galactic Survival, Star Citizen/Squadron 42, and Starfield publish materially different requirements. Their minimum specifications indicate compatibility, not a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, or stutter-free experience.
The components that matter most
CPU: model, cores and instruction support
Space sandboxes combine streaming worlds, simulation, artificial intelligence, physics and background activity. Their requirement lists therefore identify more than a clock speed. Empyrion lists a dual-core 2.5 GHz processor as its minimum and a quad-core 3 GHz processor as recommended. Star Citizen/Squadron 42 requires a quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support, and identifies Intel i7 Haswell or newer and AMD Excavator or newer as the relevant families. Starfield names specific processor generations: Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K at minimum, and Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K as recommended.
A newer CPU with fewer advertised gigahertz can be faster than an older processor with a higher clock. Check the exact model, generation, core count and supported instruction sets rather than comparing GHz alone. If your processor lacks a required instruction set, a faster graphics card will not solve the compatibility problem.

GPU: the largest range between titles
Graphics requirements vary sharply. Empyrion’s Steam listing gives an AMD RX 550 or NVIDIA GTX 1050 with at least 2 GB of VRAM as minimum, and an AMD Vega 56 or NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti with at least 4 GB as recommended. Star Citizen/Squadron 42 calls for a DirectX 11.1-capable graphics card with 4 GB of graphics memory. Starfield lists a Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti minimum, rising to an RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080 recommended.

- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
VRAM is separate from system RAM. A card can meet a model name requirement but still struggle if it has less graphics memory than the listing specifies. DirectX support also matters: a card that cannot provide the required API level is not made suitable by having enough VRAM.
System RAM: 16 GB is common, but not universal
Empyrion’s current Steam requirements list 10 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. Star Citizen/Squadron 42 lists 16 GB or more. Starfield lists 16 GB for both minimum and recommended. Treat the number as total system memory, not graphics memory. Leave room for Windows, launchers, voice chat and other applications; closing background software can reduce contention, but it does not turn a below-minimum machine into a supported configuration.
Storage: capacity and SSD status both count
Starfield requires 125 GB on an SSD. Star Citizen/Squadron 42 requires a 150 GB or larger SSD and recommends at least 10 GB of additional SSD space for the pagefile. Empyrion lists 10 GB minimum or 15 GB recommended and highly recommends an SSD.

The published requirements do not require NVMe specifically. They do establish that an SSD is mandatory for Starfield and Star Citizen/Squadron 42, and strongly preferred for Empyrion. Keep substantially more free space than the installation figure so updates and the operating system are not forced into a nearly full drive.
Operating system and graphics API
Empyrion’s current Steam listing supports 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 with DirectX 11. Star Citizen/Squadron 42 supports 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. Starfield requires Windows 10 version 21H1 at minimum, with an updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation recommended, and uses DirectX 12. Confirm that your edition is 64-bit; a 32-bit installation cannot satisfy these listings.

How to read the Empyrion discrepancy
Empyrion’s developer FAQ says 8 GB of RAM minimum and names Windows 7/8 64-bit, while the newer Steam listing says 10 GB minimum and Windows 10/11 64-bit. Both channels otherwise give the same CPU, GPU, storage and DirectX figures. For a current installation, use the present Steam system-requirements panel as the storefront check and treat the FAQ as older guidance. Do not plan a new Windows 7/8 installation around the FAQ.
What “minimum” and “recommended” actually mean
A minimum line is generally a compatibility threshold: the publisher expects the game to install and run under the stated conditions. It does not specify a target frame rate, image quality preset, resolution, busy-server behavior or smoothness during large bases and crowded scenes. “Recommended” is a stronger starting point, not a performance guarantee.
None of the listed pages supplies a common FPS test, resolution target or benchmark methodology. You therefore cannot convert the table into a guaranteed 60-fps build, nor can you combine the most demanding CPU, GPU and RAM entries and call the result a tested genre-wide specification.

How to compare your own PC before installing
- Record the exact hardware. Note the CPU model, GPU model and VRAM, installed system RAM, Windows edition and version, DirectX capability, and the free space and type of each drive.
- Match CPU requirements first. Check the named model or an equivalent generation, core count and, for Star Citizen/Squadron 42, AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support.
- Match the GPU and memory. Compare the actual card model and VRAM with the game’s minimum and recommended rows. Do not substitute system RAM for graphics memory.
- Check Windows and DirectX. Verify 64-bit Windows, the required Windows release, and DirectX 11, 11.1 or 12 as applicable.
- Check the installation drive. Confirm enough free capacity on an SSD where the game requires one. For Star Citizen/Squadron 42, allow the stated extra SSD space for the pagefile.
- Use the current store or support page immediately before purchase. Requirements can change, and Empyrion demonstrates why an older FAQ should not override a current storefront listing.
Choosing one PC for several games
Make a matrix with one column per game and separate minimum and recommended rows. For a machine intended to cover all three titles, the tightest published categories are 16 GB of RAM, an SSD, 64-bit Windows 10/11, and—depending on the title—the more demanding Starfield or Star Citizen graphics and CPU requirements. That is a planning rule, not a tested combined build: no source reports how the games perform when those parts are assembled together.
Prioritize the component that is actually below a game’s requirement. If the CPU fails an instruction-set requirement, replace or platform-upgrade the CPU and motherboard before buying a faster GPU. If the card meets the GPU model but lacks the required VRAM, a graphics upgrade is the relevant fix. If capacity is the only problem, adding an SSD can be more effective than replacing otherwise compatible core hardware.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
Using an old requirement page
Older pages may list a different Windows version or RAM floor, as Empyrion’s FAQ does. Recheck the current Steam or publisher listing on the day you install.

Comparing clock speed instead of processor identity
Clock speed does not reveal instruction support or generation. Use the complete CPU model and verify AVX-family support where required.
Assuming any large drive is acceptable
A hard drive may have enough gigabytes but still fail a game’s stated SSD requirement. Install Starfield and Star Citizen/Squadron 42 on an SSD, and reserve the additional pagefile space specified for Star Citizen/Squadron 42.
Expecting minimum hardware to deliver a chosen frame rate
Because the requirements provide no shared FPS or resolution benchmark, treat any performance target as unverified until you consult a test that uses your exact game version, settings and hardware.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Running out of free space after installation
Installation figures are not a sensible long-term free-space target. Keep room for updates, save data and Windows operations, especially on the SSD hosting a pagefile.
A sensible buying decision
Start with the games you will actually play, then choose the highest verified requirement in each category without assuming that the resulting combination guarantees a particular experience. For Empyrion, the current Steam listing is the safer present-day baseline. For Star Citizen/Squadron 42, confirm instruction support, 4 GB graphics memory, 16 GB or more of RAM and the 150 GB SSD requirement. For Starfield, confirm the named CPU and GPU tiers, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, and a 125 GB SSD.
The Bottom Line
There is no single “space sandbox” PC specification. Compare each title’s CPU model and instruction support, GPU and VRAM, RAM, Windows/DirectX version and SSD requirement; use current publisher listings, and treat minimum and recommended figures as compatibility guidance rather than FPS guarantees.
