There is no single set of PC specifications that guarantees a good experience in every modern game. The right specification depends on the games you play and your target resolution, graphics preset, frame rate, and use of features such as frame generation.
Start with each game’s current official requirements. Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM and storage separately, then verify that your motherboard, power supply, case and drive interface can support any upgrade. Minimum and recommended labels describe a particular game’s test target; they are not universal performance guarantees.
Define the experience before choosing parts
“Can this PC run modern games?” is too broad to answer accurately. A computer may meet one title’s minimum requirement and miss another’s recommended tier. Even within one game, the target can change between a low preset at 30 frames per second and a high preset at 60 frames per second with ray tracing.
Resolution
Choose the display resolution first. A 1080p target asks the graphics card to render fewer pixels than 1440p or 4K, so the same hardware can deliver different results at different resolutions. Record the resolution you actually intend to use rather than the maximum resolution your monitor accepts.

Preset and visual features
Write down the graphics preset you want and whether you expect ray tracing, upscaling or frame generation. A requirement that assumes one of those features is enabled is not equivalent to a native-rendering target without it.
Frame-rate goal
Specify a frame-rate goal, such as 30, 60 or a higher refresh-rate target. The number attached to a requirement only has meaning when its resolution and preset are also stated. “Recommended” without a stated performance target should be treated as a comparison tier, not a promise.
How to read a game’s system requirements
Use the game’s current publisher or platform listing, then identify the exact tier that matches your goal. Requirements can change after patches, and store pages can be updated, so check the listing again when you are ready to buy or upgrade.

CD PROJEKT RED’s June 11, 2023 update for Cyberpunk 2077 says its revised minimum configuration was intended to represent 1080p at an average 30 FPS on the Low preset. That is a specific target, not a statement that every PC meeting the list will deliver 60 FPS, high settings or ray tracing.
Recommended does not remove the need for conditions
The official Monster Hunter Wilds Steam listing states a target of 1080p at 60 FPS on the Medium preset with Frame Generation enabled. Keep the Frame Generation condition attached whenever you quote that target. A machine that reaches the listed result with the feature enabled should not automatically be expected to reach the same result with it disabled.
Read CPU and GPU lines independently
Requirements normally list a processor tier and a graphics-card tier. CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as both graphics- and processor-intensive and tells players to make sure both components meet or exceed the minimum. Matching only the GPU does not prove that the CPU, memory, storage or rest of the system is sufficient.

What the published examples actually establish
These figures are useful illustrations of how to interpret requirements, not an industry-wide specification. The listings provide different targets and different memory and storage numbers.
| Game and source | Published performance target | Memory listed | Storage listed | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077, CD PROJEKT RED update, June 11, 2023 | 1080p, average 30 FPS, Low preset for the revised minimum configuration | 12 GB RAM | 70 GB SSD | The update contains separate graphics and processor tiers, including ray-tracing levels. |
| Monster Hunter Wilds, Valve/Capcom Steam listing; publication date not shown on the accessed listing | 1080p, 60 FPS, Medium preset | 16 GB RAM | 75 GB available space; SSD required | Frame Generation enabled. |
The contrast matters. One game lists 12 GB of memory and a 70 GB SSD for a defined minimum target; the other lists 16 GB and 75 GB of available SSD space for a 60-FPS Medium target that assumes Frame Generation. Neither figure establishes a universal amount for every current or future release.
Evaluate every major component
Graphics processing unit (GPU)
The GPU usually determines how much visual detail and resolution you can render, but its suitability is game-specific. Compare the model or performance tier named by the game’s requirement with your installed card. Also check the listed graphics memory when the game provides it. A card that appears adequate by name may still miss a requirement if its memory capacity or feature support differs.
Ray tracing creates another tier to check. Cyberpunk 2077 publishes distinct ray-tracing requirements rather than treating ray tracing as part of one universal recommendation. If you want that mode, use its ray-tracing tier; do not infer it from the ordinary Low, Medium or High requirement.

Central processing unit (CPU)
Compare the processor separately from the GPU. A fast graphics card cannot compensate for a CPU below the game’s stated tier, particularly in processor-intensive games or scenes with heavy simulation. Check the exact processor family and generation in the official listing, and compare your installed model rather than relying on the brand name alone.

System memory (RAM)
Use the game’s stated RAM figure as a title-specific requirement. The cited examples list 12 GB for the revised Cyberpunk 2077 minimum and 16 GB for Monster Hunter Wilds. Those numbers do not prove that one amount is sufficient for every modern game, operating-system workload or background application.
Before launching a demanding title, check how much memory is installed and how much is available with your normal applications open. If you upgrade, confirm the motherboard supports the module type and capacity you plan to install. Leave practical room for the operating system and other software, but do not present an unverified universal headroom number as a requirement.
Storage drive
Confirm both the drive type and free capacity. The Cyberpunk 2077 update lists a 70 GB SSD, while the Monster Hunter Wilds listing requires an SSD and 75 GB of available space. “SSD required” does not establish that an NVMe drive is mandatory; do not substitute an NVMe claim for the wording in the game’s listing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check free space rather than only the drive’s advertised total. Installation files, updates and the operating system also consume capacity, and a drive that barely meets the number may leave no practical room for patches or other games.
Motherboard, power supply, case and interfaces
Requirements pages focus on performance components, but an upgrade must also fit the existing computer. Verify the motherboard socket and firmware support for a new CPU, the slot and physical clearance for a GPU, the power supply’s capacity and connectors, the case’s card length and cooling space, and the drive interface available for a replacement SSD. The published game requirements do not assess compatibility with an individual PC, so these checks are your responsibility before purchasing.
A repeatable audit for your current PC
- List your hardware. Record the exact CPU model, GPU model and graphics memory, installed RAM, drive type and free space. Use the operating system’s system-information panel or the component labels rather than a broad series name.
- Choose one target game. Open its current official requirements page or store listing. Note the tier that matches your intended resolution, preset and frame rate.
- Capture every condition. Write down whether the target assumes ray tracing, upscaling or Frame Generation. Record the date of the listing if it is shown, because requirements can change with patches.
- Compare the GPU. Match your graphics card to the named tier and check any stated graphics-memory requirement. If your target is a ray-tracing tier, compare against that tier specifically.
- Compare the CPU. Check the processor line independently. Do not treat a GPU match as evidence that the processor is sufficient.
- Check RAM. Compare installed memory with the game’s figure and observe available memory with your usual background applications running.
- Check the drive. Confirm that the game allows your drive type and that the drive has the required free capacity. For an SSD-only listing, verify that the installation location is an SSD.
- Verify upgrade compatibility. Before ordering a component, check motherboard support, power delivery, case clearance, cooling and the relevant drive interface.
- Recheck after major updates. A patch or revised listing can change requirements. Use the current page when making the final decision.
When one PC must cover several games
Build around the most demanding target you actually play, not an imagined average. Make a small comparison sheet with one row per game and columns for resolution, preset, frame rate, special features, GPU tier, CPU tier, RAM, and storage. The strictest requirement in each column becomes the constraint you must satisfy.

Do not combine unlike targets into a misleading single number. For example, a 1080p/30 Low minimum for one title and a 1080p/60 Medium target with Frame Generation for another are different experiences. If you want both, state both goals and check each game’s tier.
For an existing PC, upgrade only the component that fails the target after confirming the rest of the platform can support it. A GPU replacement may still leave a processor shortfall; adding RAM does not solve an inadequate graphics card; and installing a larger SSD does not change rendering performance by itself. The requirements comparison tells you which constraint exists, while the motherboard, power supply, case and interface checks tell you whether the proposed fix is feasible.

Using a universal “modern gaming PC” specification
No cross-game statistic establishes one universal specification. The 12 GB and 70 GB figures from Cyberpunk 2077 and the 16 GB and 75 GB figures from Monster Hunter Wilds are title-specific. Treat them as examples of why you must check each game.
Dropping the performance qualifier
Repeating “60 FPS” without saying 1080p, Medium and Frame Generation enabled changes the meaning of the Monster Hunter Wilds listing. Keep all of those conditions together when planning a build.
Checking only one component
A computer is not compliant because its GPU matches a list. Check CPU, GPU, RAM and storage individually, then validate platform compatibility for any upgrade.

Ignoring free space
A drive can have the right nominal capacity but insufficient free space for installation. Compare the listing’s available-space figure with the capacity remaining at the time you install the game.
How to make a buying decision without overbuilding
First, decide whether your current PC already meets the exact target. If it does, do not replace parts solely because a newer component exists. If it fails, identify the first unmet requirement and investigate a targeted upgrade.
When several components fall short, compare the cost and compatibility of an upgrade against replacing the platform. The game listing cannot tell you whether your motherboard, power supply or case makes an upgrade practical, so include those checks in the decision. A component that meets a requirement on paper is not useful if it cannot be installed, powered or cooled in your system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the target honest. If you are comfortable with 1080p and a lower preset, you may need a different tier than someone seeking a higher resolution, ray tracing or a high refresh rate. If you rely on Frame Generation, record that dependency and understand that a target reached with it enabled is not the same as native rendering at the same frame rate.
What to recheck before installing a new release
- Open the game’s current publisher or store requirements instead of relying on an old screenshot or launch article.
- Confirm the target resolution, preset, frame rate and any required rendering feature.
- Compare CPU and GPU lines independently.
- Verify installed RAM and available SSD capacity.
- Check that the motherboard, power supply, case and drive interface support the proposed upgrade.
- Expect requirements to change after patches and revisit the listing if the game’s performance target changes.
The practical answer to “what PC specs do I need?” is therefore a method: define the experience, read the exact game’s tier, compare every component, and verify the platform before spending money. That approach remains accurate when games, patches and performance features differ.
