Short answer: For a smoother Windows experience, target Riot Games’ recommended specification—an Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, a DirectX 11 graphics processor with 2GB of VRAM, 4GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, and Windows 11 on an x64 system with TPM 2.0. The minimum specification is a compatibility floor, not a performance promise: Riot cautions that systems meeting only minimum requirements may still have performance issues.
The practical target for smooth League of Legends play
Riot Games’ current requirements, published September 22, 2026, separate basic compatibility from a more useful target. The minimum column is intended to show what can launch the game; the recommended column is the safer baseline when you want stable play at the listed resolution and graphics preset. Riot explicitly states: “If your setup meets only the minimum requirements, you may still see performance issues.” See the complete League of Legends minimum and recommended system requirements.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended target |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Intel Core i3-530 or AMD FX-4100, with SSE 4.2 | Intel Core i5-8250 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200, with SSE 4.2 |
| GPU | GeForce 400 Series, AMD HD 6570, or Intel HD 4600; DirectX 11-level hardware; 1GB VRAM | NVIDIA GeForce 560, AMD Radeon HD 6950, or Intel UHD 630; DirectX 11-level hardware; 2GB VRAM |
| Memory | 2GB RAM | 4GB RAM |
| Storage | 16GB HDD | 16GB SSD |
| Operating system | Retail Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11; x64. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. | Windows 11; TPM 2.0; x64 |
| Graphics preset | Low | High |
| Resolution | 1024×768 | 1920×1080 |
These are Riot’s published tiers, not an independent benchmark. The page does not promise a particular frame rate, frame time, or monitor refresh rate. A computer that reaches the recommended column is a sensible buying target, but actual results still vary with resolution, in-game settings, graphics drivers, cooling, background applications, and later game updates.

Minimum processor
The minimum Windows processors are an Intel Core i3-530 or AMD FX-4100, and the CPU must support the SSE 4.2 instruction set. A processor with a similar name is not automatically equivalent; check the exact model and its instruction-set support when evaluating an older desktop or laptop.

Recommended processor
Riot’s recommended examples are the Intel Core i5-8250 and AMD Ryzen 3 1200, also with SSE 4.2. Choosing at least this tier gives more headroom for the game client, voice chat, a browser, and other ordinary desktop tasks than the minimum processors. It does not establish a guaranteed FPS number.
ARM and unusual Windows hardware
ARM CPUs are not supported in Riot’s Windows requirements table. A Windows device using an ARM processor therefore falls outside the published support target even if its memory or storage looks sufficient.
Windows graphics requirements: DirectX 11 feature level 11_0
Compatibility floor
The minimum GPU examples are a GeForce 400 Series card, AMD HD 6570, or Intel HD 4600. Riot requires DirectX 11-level hardware and 1GB of VRAM in this column.
Recommended graphics tier
The recommended examples are NVIDIA GeForce 560, AMD Radeon HD 6950, or Intel UHD 630, with DirectX 11-level hardware and 2GB of VRAM. Riot now specifies DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 for Windows. If a system cannot provide that feature level, it does not satisfy the current requirement, regardless of how much system RAM it has.

Integrated graphics and shared memory
Intel HD 4600 and Intel UHD 630 appear in Riot’s table, so a compatible integrated GPU can meet a listed tier. Integrated graphics commonly borrow system memory rather than having a separate VRAM chip. Check the GPU model and its DirectX feature level instead of judging a laptop by the word “integrated” alone.
How much RAM and storage do you need?
RAM
Riot lists 2GB of RAM as the Windows minimum and 4GB as recommended. Two gigabytes may leave little room for Windows and other applications, which is why it should be treated as a launch-and-compatibility floor. Four gigabytes is the practical target in Riot’s table, although a machine with more RAM can still be limited by an old CPU, unsupported graphics feature level, or thermal throttling.
Storage type and capacity
The Windows table calls for 16GB on an HDD at minimum and 16GB on an SSD at the recommended tier. The capacity figure is 16GB in both columns; the difference is the storage medium. An SSD generally makes Windows and application loading feel more responsive, but Riot’s page does not convert that storage recommendation into a loading-time or FPS guarantee. Keep at least the required space available and allow additional room for operating-system files and future updates.

Windows versions, TPM 2.0, and architecture
The minimum operating-system entry is a retail Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or Windows 11, on x64 hardware. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. Riot’s recommended operating-system entry is Windows 11 with TPM 2.0 and x64.

Windows 10 build numbers matter: an older installation may need an operating-system update even when the CPU and GPU are adequate. A 32-bit installation does not meet the x64 requirement. TPM 2.0 is a platform-security requirement, so it depends on firmware and motherboard support rather than RAM capacity.
macOS requirements
Riot publishes a separate Mac target. Apple Silicon is the primary supported direction, and the listed CPU platform for both minimum and recommended use is Apple M1. The Mac must have a Metal-capable GPU, macOS 12, 40GB of available storage, and 8GB of unified memory.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended target |
|---|---|---|
| CPU platform | Apple M1 | Apple M1 |
| GPU API | Metal-capable GPU | Metal-capable GPU |
| Memory | 8GB unified memory | 8GB unified memory |
| Storage | 40GB available | 40GB available |
| Operating system | macOS 12 | macOS 12 |
| Graphics preset | Low | High |
| Resolution | Not separately stated in the table | 1680×1050 |
Intel Macs may continue to play, according to Riot, but support is primarily focused on Apple Silicon. Riot also notes that an Intel-specific issue may not be investigated or resolved. That makes an Intel Mac a less predictable choice than an Apple Silicon Mac even when it can run the client today.

Riot states that League of Legends is supported only on Windows and Mac OS. It cannot provide support for Linux, SteamOS, or Bazzite OS. Compatibility workarounds may exist outside Riot’s supported platforms, but they are not an appropriate basis for a dependable purchase or troubleshooting plan because the publisher does not support those installations.

How to check whether your current PC qualifies
Windows hardware and operating system
- Open Settings → System → About. Record the processor name, installed RAM, system type, and Windows edition.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Performance. Inspect the CPU, Memory, GPU, and Disk panels while no game is running.
- Press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, and review the Display tab. Confirm the GPU model, driver information, and DirectX feature-level information. The important compatibility target is feature level 11_0. - Press Windows + R, enter
tpm.msc, and check that the TPM specification is 2.0 if you plan to use Windows 11. - Open Settings → System → Storage and verify that at least 16GB is available for the game, with additional free space reserved for updates and normal Windows operation.
Mac hardware and software
- Choose Apple menu → About This Mac and note whether the Mac uses an Apple M1 or another processor, how much unified memory it has, and the macOS version.
- Open System Settings → General → Storage and verify 40GB of available space.
- Confirm that the Mac is running macOS 12 or newer and that its graphics hardware supports Metal.
Compare the exact model names with Riot’s table rather than relying on a retailer’s description such as “gaming laptop” or “dedicated graphics.”

When replacing the whole computer
For Windows, start with a Windows 11 x64 computer that has TPM 2.0 and meets every item in Riot’s recommended column: Core i5-8250 or Ryzen 3 1200 class CPU, one of the listed recommended GPU examples or hardware that demonstrably provides DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 and 2GB VRAM, 4GB or more RAM, and an SSD with at least 16GB available. A 1920×1080 display aligns with Riot’s recommended resolution.
For Mac, an Apple Silicon model with an M1 processor, 8GB unified memory, Metal support, macOS 12, and 40GB free storage matches Riot’s listed target. More recent hardware may provide additional headroom, but the requirements page does not publish a comparative FPS result for newer chips.
When a RAM upgrade is the sensible first step
If a Windows system has 2GB or less, increasing it to at least 4GB addresses the gap between Riot’s minimum and recommended memory tiers. Before buying a module, verify the DDR generation, desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM form factor, motherboard capacity limit, number of open slots, and whether existing modules must be matched. A RAM upgrade cannot fix an unsupported DirectX feature level or an incompatible CPU.

When an SSD upgrade helps
Moving the installation from an HDD to an SSD aligns with Riot’s recommended storage medium and can improve general application responsiveness. Confirm the drive interface and physical format, check that the operating system can boot from the replacement drive, and preserve a backup before cloning or reinstalling. Storage speed does not substitute for the required GPU feature level.
When a graphics or CPU upgrade is required
If the GPU lacks DirectX 11 feature level 11_0, no graphics-setting change can make it meet the current Windows requirement. If the CPU lacks SSE 4.2, replace the platform rather than assuming extra RAM will solve the problem. On a desktop, check the power supply, case clearance, motherboard compatibility, and cooling before installing a newer graphics card or processor. On most laptops, CPU and GPU upgrades are not practical; replacement is usually the realistic path.
Why a qualifying PC can still feel slow
Meeting a table entry establishes compatibility, not a fixed experience. Start with the factors that can change during a play session:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Resolution and preset: Running above the listed target resolution or using more demanding effects increases the graphics workload. Test the recommended 1920×1080 Windows target or 1680×1050 Mac target first.
- Drivers: Install current graphics drivers supplied for your operating system and GPU. A driver problem can affect performance even when the hardware model is adequate.
- Thermals: Dust, blocked vents, hot ambient temperatures, or an aggressive laptop power-saving mode can reduce sustained clock speeds. Test while the computer is plugged in and properly ventilated.
- Background software: Browsers, recording tools, overlays, synchronisation utilities, and large downloads consume CPU, memory, storage, or network resources. Close unnecessary processes before testing.
- Power and GPU selection: On a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, verify that the game is assigned to the intended GPU in Windows graphics settings and that the system is not in a battery-saving profile.
- Patch changes: Game updates can alter performance characteristics. Recheck settings after a major update instead of assuming an old configuration remains optimal.
Lowering the preset or resolution is a troubleshooting step, not evidence that the computer meets Riot’s recommended tier. If problems persist at the listed target settings, compare every CPU, GPU feature-level, RAM, storage, and operating-system requirement again.
Quick Recap
A simple decision checklist
- Only need to know whether it can launch? Check the minimum CPU, SSE 4.2, DirectX 11 feature level 11_0, 1GB VRAM, 2GB RAM, operating system, and 16GB storage requirements.
- Want a smoother 1080p Windows setup? Aim for the recommended CPU and GPU examples, 2GB VRAM, 4GB RAM, a 16GB SSD requirement, Windows 11 x64, TPM 2.0, High graphics, and 1920×1080.
- Considering a Mac? Prefer Apple M1 or newer Apple Silicon, Metal, 8GB unified memory, macOS 12, and 40GB available storage; treat Intel Mac support as less predictable.
- Using Linux, SteamOS, or Bazzite OS? Riot does not provide official support, so choose a supported Windows or Mac installation for a dependable setup.
