Valve’s published SteamVR floor is an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent, 4 GB of RAM, and a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 equivalent, with USB 2.0-or-newer and HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer. Those figures establish compatibility with SteamVR, not a guarantee that every current demo will maintain its target refresh rate. For a new PC, plan on a current dedicated graphics card, at least 16 GB of system memory, a recent mid-range CPU, an SSD and the exact display and USB outputs your headset requires.

The right specification depends on headset resolution, refresh rate, renderer and the individual demo. Use Valve’s numbers as a floor, then check each demo’s Steam store requirements and the headset maker’s compatibility list before buying or upgrading.

Valve’s official SteamVR requirements

Component Published requirement What it means
Processor Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better The compatibility floor for launching SteamVR; newer CPUs provide more frame-time headroom.
Memory 4 GB RAM minimum Enough for the stated SteamVR floor, but not a sensible target for a new PC or Steam Link host.
Graphics, minimum NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or better The minimum dedicated-GPU class Valve names.
Graphics, recommended NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 equivalent or better Valve’s recommended graphics tier, still a baseline rather than a promise for demanding modern demos.
USB At least one USB 2.0 port Headset and tracking accessories may require additional ports or newer USB bandwidth.
Video output HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer The port and cable must also match the headset and support its resolution and refresh mode.
Internet Broadband internet Needed for Steam installation, downloads, authentication and, for wireless streaming, a reliable local network.
Operating system Windows 10 or later for current Steam Client support Valve’s current support policy has applied since January 1, 2024.

Valve describes SteamVR as a tool for experiencing VR content on supported hardware. Meeting the table’s minimums means the software and hardware are in the supported range; it does not mean a high-resolution headset will run every scene smoothly.

Why the minimum is not enough for modern VR demos

VR renders a separate view for each eye and must deliver frames at the headset’s refresh interval. A demo can therefore become uncomfortable when an otherwise acceptable monitor-game PC misses its frame-time budget. Resolution per eye, refresh rate, supersampling, shadows, physics, simulation complexity and the number of objects in a scene all change the workload.

Graphics headroom matters most

The GPU is usually the first upgrade lever for high-resolution or high-refresh PCVR. Valve’s minimum and recommended cards are from older generations, so treating a machine that barely meets them as a 2026 “modern-demo” system is risky. A current dedicated mid-range GPU is a more practical starting point for a new build; demanding simulators and heavily supersampled scenes may need a higher tier.

CPU frame time still matters

Physics-heavy, simulation and high-object-count demos can become CPU-bound even when the graphics card has capacity. Choose a recent mid-range desktop or laptop CPU rather than selecting a system solely by its GPU label. Stable frame times are more important than a high peak benchmark number.

Memory and storage affect consistency

Eight gigabytes can satisfy older software floors, but it leaves little room for Windows, SteamVR, a browser, tracking software and a large demo at the same time. Sixteen gigabytes is the documented baseline for a computer hosting Steam Link, and it is the sensible minimum for a new PCVR system. More memory helps when you run development tools, recording software or several applications together. An SSD reduces loading and asset-streaming pauses; it does not replace GPU or CPU performance.

How much RAM do you need?

Direct-wired SteamVR

Valve’s SteamVR listing says 4 GB minimum. That number is a compatibility floor and may permit only light or older content after the operating system and background programs consume their share. Plan for 16 GB for a practical general-purpose PCVR build. If you create VR content, stream, record, or keep large applications open, 32 GB gives additional working room.

Steam Link hosting

Steam Support lists 16 GB of memory for the computer that streams games through Steam Link. Steam and SteamVR must be running on that host PC. The headset receives a video stream, but the host still performs the game’s rendering, simulation and encoding, so wireless streaming does not lower the computer’s GPU requirement.

Quest Link, Steam Link and a direct cable

Quest Link or another wired path

A wired link sends rendered frames between the PC and headset and normally requires a headset-specific USB data cable or the headset’s supported video connection. Confirm that the cable carries data, not merely charging power, and connect the headset to a port attached to the discrete GPU when the system has both integrated and discrete graphics. Cable length, connector type and headset compatibility can limit a setup even when the PC meets Valve’s numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Link over a network

Steam Link streams a Steam library from the computer to a Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus or PICO headset. The host still needs Steam, SteamVR, a capable GPU and at least 16 GB of memory according to Steam Support. Wireless play adds network conditions: latency, interference, router placement and congestion can affect comfort and image quality. A wired network connection from the host to the router generally removes one variable, while the headset remains on a suitable Wi-Fi network.

Which option should you choose?

  • Use a direct wired connection when you want the most predictable latency and have compatible ports and cable routing.
  • Use Steam Link when your headset supports it and you value freedom of movement, accepting that network quality becomes part of the experience.
  • In both cases, judge the PC by the headset’s per-eye resolution, refresh target and the demo’s recommended settings, not by the connection method alone.

DisplayPort, HDMI and USB: checking the physical path

Valve’s baseline calls for HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer and at least USB 2.0. Those labels are starting points, not a guarantee that every headset mode will work.

Verify the connector and the GPU output

Desktop systems may expose video ports on both the motherboard and the graphics card. For a headset that relies on the discrete GPU, plug the cable into the graphics card’s output. On laptops, the internal wiring can route USB-C, HDMI or DisplayPort differently; consult the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming every USB-C port supports DisplayPort video.

Check cable capability

A cable must support the required signal, length and data rate for the selected resolution and refresh rate. A USB charging cable may not carry link data. Active adapters, extension cables and docks can introduce compatibility problems, so test the headset with a direct connection first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave enough USB capacity

Headsets, tracking stations and controllers can compete for bandwidth or power. Disconnect unnecessary high-bandwidth USB devices while troubleshooting, and use the headset maker’s recommended port type when one is specified.

Room-scale and base-station requirements

Performance specifications do not guarantee a usable play space. Steam’s SteamVR FAQ cites a minimum clear area of 2 m by 1.5 m for room-scale VR and a maximum 5 m separation between base stations for the referenced Vive setup. The dimensions and mounting rules can differ by headset and tracking system, so measure the room and follow the model-specific guidance.

  • Clear furniture, pets and trip hazards from the tracked area.
  • Keep the headset cable, if wired, away from walkways and rotating play areas.
  • Place base stations within the stated distance and with an unobstructed view when the tracking system requires it.

A practical specification target for a new PC

The following target is headroom guidance, not a Valve universal minimum. It is intended for someone buying a current PC to run a range of SteamVR demos rather than only verifying that SteamVR launches.

Part Practical target Reason
GPU Current dedicated mid-range graphics card or better Provides more room for high-resolution headsets, higher refresh rates and demanding effects than Valve’s dated floor.
CPU Recent mid-range desktop or laptop processor Improves frame-time headroom for physics, simulation and busy scenes.
RAM 16 GB minimum; 32 GB for creation, recording or heavy multitasking Sixteen gigabytes is the Steam Link host baseline and leaves practical operating-system headroom.
Storage SSD with adequate free space Shortens load times and reduces asset-streaming stalls.
Cooling and power Cooling and power supply sized for the chosen GPU Prevents sustained clocks from falling during long sessions.
Outputs Compatible DisplayPort or HDMI plus the required USB data ports Ensures the headset can receive video, data and power through the intended path.
Network Broadband internet; stable local network for Steam Link Supports downloads, authentication and low-latency wireless streaming.

How to check a PC before buying or installing a demo

  1. Identify the headset and mode. Record its per-eye resolution, supported refresh rates, connector requirements and whether you plan to use a direct cable or Steam Link.
  2. Read the exact demo’s Steam store requirements. Treat the demo’s recommended GPU and CPU as more relevant than the generic SteamVR floor.
  3. Compare the discrete GPU first. Confirm that the card has enough performance headroom for the chosen resolution and refresh target; do not rely on the CPU model alone.
  4. Check memory and storage. Use at least 16 GB for a new system, especially when Steam Link is involved, and install large demos on an SSD.
  5. Confirm ports and routing. Match HDMI or DisplayPort versions, USB data capability, cable length and laptop USB-C wiring to the headset’s requirements.
  6. Verify software support. Use Windows 10 or later for current Steam Client support, install current GPU drivers and apply Windows updates.
  7. Run Valve’s SteamVR performance test. Use it as an initial readiness check, then test the actual demo because application requirements vary.

What to tune when a demo stutters

If a PC meets only the minimum, begin with the headset’s render resolution and refresh rate. Lowering supersampling or selecting a lower refresh target reduces GPU work; reducing shadows, reflections and other expensive effects can help specific scenes. Change one setting at a time and watch for whether the headset reports missed frames or reprojection.

When the GPU is overloaded

  • Reduce render scale or supersampling.
  • Lower refresh rate if the headset permits it.
  • Reduce shadows, volumetric effects and reflections.
  • Close GPU-intensive overlays, recording tools and browsers.

When the CPU is overloaded

  • Reduce crowd, physics or object-count settings when available.
  • Close background applications that generate sustained CPU load.
  • Check temperatures and power modes so the processor is not throttling.

When streaming is the problem

  • Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet when possible.
  • Move the headset closer to the access point and reduce competing traffic.
  • Test a direct cable to separate rendering problems from network latency.

The headset is detected but shows no image

Move the video cable to the discrete GPU, reseat both ends, test a known-good cable and verify that the cable supports the selected resolution and refresh rate. On a laptop, confirm that the specific USB-C or HDMI port carries the required display signal.

Tracking or controllers disconnect

Remove unnecessary USB devices, try another USB port, keep tracking cameras or base stations unobstructed and respect the room-scale spacing guidance. Interference and power limits can cause symptoms that look like a graphics failure.

Steam Link feels delayed

Check the host’s wired network connection, reduce wireless congestion and test near the access point. If latency remains, use a direct wired headset connection where supported; Steam Link cannot eliminate network delay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing between a laptop and desktop

A laptop can run SteamVR when its dedicated GPU, cooling system and ports meet the headset and demo requirements, but model-to-model differences are significant. Some laptops route video through integrated graphics, limit sustained GPU power or omit a compatible port. Verify the exact model’s GPU wattage, port wiring and cooling reviews from the manufacturer’s documentation.

A desktop usually offers easier GPU, RAM, storage and cooling upgrades. That flexibility matters because modern demos can raise their requirements as rendering resolution and visual effects improve. Whichever form factor you choose, compare the complete configuration rather than a processor name or GPU family in isolation.

Final decision framework

For an older PC that only matches i5-4590/FX 8350, 4 GB RAM and GTX 970/R9 290-class graphics, expect compatibility with the SteamVR floor but plan to tune individual demos. For a Steam Link host, 16 GB of memory is the documented baseline, and the host still performs all rendering. For a new purchase, prioritize a current dedicated GPU, 16 GB or more of RAM, a recent mid-range CPU, SSD storage, adequate cooling and confirmed HDMI/DisplayPort and USB connectivity. Then validate the exact demo and headset combination with Valve’s performance test and the vendor’s compatibility list.
