For a current open-world racing action game at 1080p, aim for a modern six-core processor, 16 GB of RAM, a discrete graphics card around the GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 class, and an SSD with at least 110 GB free. That is a practical cross-game target based on published requirements for Forza Horizon 5, Need for Speed Unbound and Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown—not a universal guarantee from every developer.
Minimum specifications are only a starting floor. They can mean low settings, aggressive upscaling or 30 frames per second, while a smoother 60-fps experience usually requires the recommended tier and enough graphics headroom.
The sensible 1080p target
Avoid buying to the weakest minimum requirement if you want an open-world racer to remain enjoyable as you drive through dense cities, countryside and traffic. A balanced target is:
- CPU: a recent six-core desktop processor, comparable in class to the recommended Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 5 3600 listed for Need for Speed Unbound.
- Memory: 16 GB of system RAM. It is the recommended amount for both Forza Horizon 5 and Need for Speed Unbound.
- GPU: a discrete card roughly in the RTX 2070/RX 5700 performance class or faster for demanding 1080p settings. Less demanding titles can run with a GTX 1070 or RX 590-class card.
- Storage: an SSD with at least 110 GB free for the largest listed installs. Leave additional room for patches and temporary installation files.
- Operating system and API: 64-bit Windows 10 or newer where required, with DirectX 12 support.
- Internet: broadband connectivity for the games whose published requirements specify it.
This configuration is a practical buying guide, not a promise of a particular frame rate. Your resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing options, background applications and the game’s own optimization all affect performance.

What each component controls
CPU: world simulation and consistency
Open-world racers continually stream scenery, manage traffic, run physics and process opponents. The minimum processors span older four-core-era parts such as the Core i5-4460 and Core i7-4790K, while recommended tiers move to parts such as the Core i7-11700K and Ryzen 7 3700X. For a new system, choose a modern six-core or better CPU rather than buying to an old minimum. A stronger processor helps frame-time consistency, but it cannot compensate for an undersized GPU at high image quality.

GPU: resolution, effects and visual headroom
The graphics card determines how much detail, texture quality, shadow quality and post-processing you can use. The cited recommended cards range from the GTX 1070/RX 590 class in Forza Horizon 5 to the RTX 2070/RX 5700 class in Need for Speed Unbound and RTX 2080/RX 6650 class in Solar Crown. Treat the most demanding game you intend to play as your buying reference. The listings do not state a universal VRAM requirement; compare the exact card model and its memory capacity before buying, especially if you plan higher resolutions or texture settings.
RAM: capacity before speed
Eight gigabytes is the minimum in the first two games, but both list 16 GB as recommended. Solar Crown lists 12 GB for both minimum and recommended tiers. Sixteen gigabytes is therefore the safest common target for a gaming PC, with enough capacity to keep the game and normal background software resident. If your current system has 8 GB, upgrading memory is usually a more direct fix for stutter caused by paging than replacing the CPU first.
SSD: streaming and installation space
Solar Crown explicitly requires an SSD, and the three games list 50 GB or 110 GB of storage. Install the game on an SSD when possible: it provides the required medium for Solar Crown and leaves room for faster loading and world-streaming behavior than a hard disk. Capacity figures are free-space requirements, not a recommendation to fill a drive to its limit. Keep extra headroom for updates, shader caches and the operating system.

Operating system and DirectX
Forza Horizon 5 specifies Windows 10 build 18362 or later and DirectX 12. Need for Speed Unbound specifies 64-bit Windows 10 and DirectX 12. Confirm that your edition is 64-bit, install current graphics drivers and apply Windows updates before troubleshooting a launch failure. A computer that meets the component list but lacks the required API or operating-system version is not fully compatible.

Forza Horizon 5
The minimum combination—Core i5-4460 or Ryzen 3 1200, 8 GB RAM and GTX 970, RX 470 or Arc A380—describes an entry level for a 110 GB DirectX 12 game. Its recommended tier rises to a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 1500X, 16 GB RAM and GTX 1070, RX 590 or Arc A750. If this is your main game, 16 GB and an SSD are sensible system-wide choices even though the listing does not mark the SSD as mandatory.
Need for Speed Unbound
The minimum is a Core i5-8600 or Ryzen 5 2600 with 8 GB RAM and a GTX 1050 Ti or RX 570. The recommended specification is substantially stronger on the graphics side: Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2070 or RX 5700. Its 50 GB installation is smaller than the two 110 GB examples, but broadband internet and 64-bit Windows 10 remain part of the published requirement.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown
This is the clearest warning against interpreting “minimum” as a 60-fps promise. The minimum tier uses a Core i7-4790K or Ryzen 5 2600, 12 GB RAM and GTX 1050 Ti, RX 570 or Arc A380, but the stated goal is low 1080p at 30 fps with FSR 2 Ultra Performance. The recommended tier—Core i7-11700K or Ryzen 7 3700X, 12 GB RAM and RTX 2080 or RX 6650—targets medium 1080p at 60 fps with DLSS or FSR 2 Balanced. It also requires an SSD and 110 GB of space.
How to check whether your current PC is ready
- Identify the hardware: in Windows, open Settings > System > About for the processor and installed RAM. Open Task Manager > Performance to see the GPU and drives.
- Check the operating system: open Settings > System > About and verify a 64-bit Windows installation. For Forza Horizon 5, confirm Windows 10 build 18362 or later; for both listed DirectX 12 games, run
dxdiagand check the DirectX version. - Compare the exact GPU model: do not treat a product family name as proof of performance. Compare your card with the game’s minimum and recommended model class, then allow headroom if you want high settings or a stable 60 fps.
- Measure free space: in File Explorer > This PC, check the drive where you will install the game. Reserve 110 GB for the largest listings, plus additional free space for updates.
- Check the drive type: Task Manager’s Performance tab identifies whether the target volume is an SSD or HDD. An HDD does not satisfy Solar Crown‘s mandatory-SSD requirement.
- Close the gap by the largest constraint: an 8 GB system should move to 16 GB; a GPU below the minimum should be replaced before a CPU upgrade; and a hard disk should be replaced or supplemented with an SSD when the game requires one.
Upgrade or replace the whole PC?
Upgrade RAM first when capacity is the problem
If your processor and graphics card meet a game’s recommended class but you have only 8 GB, install a compatible 16 GB kit or expand an existing kit according to your motherboard’s supported configuration. This is the least disruptive upgrade and aligns with the recommended memory figure in two of the three published examples.

A GPU below the listed minimum cannot be rescued by adding RAM. If your card is near the minimum and you want 1080p/60, prioritize a graphics upgrade toward the recommended class. Check the power supply, case clearance, display outputs and driver support before ordering.

Replace the platform when the CPU is an older minimum-tier part
Moving from a Core i5-4460 or similar-era processor to a modern six-core platform may require a new motherboard and memory as well as the CPU. Consider a new system when the existing board cannot support 16 GB economically, lacks an appropriate SSD interface, or cannot provide the power and cooling required by the replacement GPU.
Settings that make a borderline PC playable
- Start at 1920×1080 and use the game’s recommended preset, then lower shadows, reflections and crowd or traffic detail before reducing texture quality.
- Use the game’s supported upscaler when the GPU is the limiting component. Solar Crown explicitly assumes FSR 2 Ultra Performance at its minimum and DLSS or FSR 2 Balanced at its recommended target.
- Set a frame-rate limit your system can sustain rather than chasing an unstable peak. A consistent 30 or 60 fps generally feels better than large swings.
- Monitor GPU utilization, system RAM use and frame-time graphs while driving through a busy area. High GPU utilization indicates a graphics limitation; full RAM or disk activity indicates memory or storage pressure.
- Install current GPU drivers and close overlays or background applications if you see crashes, hitching or unexplained frame drops.
Common mistakes and fixes
“My PC meets minimum but performance is poor.”
Minimum tiers are not 60-fps promises. Check whether the listing assumes low settings, 30 fps or aggressive upscaling, as Solar Crown does. Lower the preset, enable the specified upscaler and verify that the game is using the discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
“The game says there is not enough space.”
Free additional capacity beyond the nominal 50 GB or 110 GB figure, remove old game files, and select an SSD with sufficient headroom. Installation can require temporary space in addition to the final installed size.
“The game will not launch even though the parts are fast enough.”
Verify 64-bit Windows, the required Windows 10 build where applicable, DirectX 12 support, current drivers and broadband connectivity when the listing requires it. Hardware performance alone does not satisfy an operating-system or API prerequisite.
Bottom line
For a new 1080p open-world racing PC, choose a modern six-core CPU, 16 GB RAM, a discrete GPU around the RTX 2070/RX 5700 class, and an SSD with at least 110 GB free. If your budget is tighter, compare your exact components with the individual game’s minimum and recommended tables, then upgrade the weakest constraint—usually RAM, GPU or storage—rather than assuming one generic specification fits every racer.
