For a Call of Duty PC player, the most important features are a frame rate your hardware can sustain, display support that matches your monitor, and enough controls to tune visibility, latency, and image quality. Activision’s September 29, 2026 announcement for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 promises support for 1080p, 1440p, 4K, standard and ultrawide displays, more than 800 customization options, an in-game benchmark, and a developer target of 90 FPS at recommended specifications. Those figures describe an announced, pre-release feature set—not independent test results. With the announced PC launch scheduled for October 23, 2026, actual retail performance remains to be verified.
Which PC features matter most?
Prioritize features in this order:
- Sustained frame rate and frame-time consistency: Your game should deliver a stable result that suits your monitor and the responsiveness you expect, rather than briefly reaching a high peak.
- Resolution and aspect-ratio support: The game must correctly render the resolution and shape of your display. Modern Warfare 4 is announced for 1080p, 1440p, 4K, standard and ultrawide screens.
- Useful customization: Graphics, field of view, input, interface and accessibility controls let you fit the game to your hardware and preferences.
- Measurement tools: An integrated benchmark is more useful than a marketing target when you are tuning your own PC.
These features interact. A 4K ultrawide monitor demands more rendering work than a conventional 1080p display, while a high-refresh monitor only feels different if your PC can produce enough frames consistently. Extensive settings are valuable because they let you trade visual detail for responsiveness instead of accepting one fixed preset.
Frame rate: understand the 90 FPS target correctly
What Activision has announced
Call of Duty Staff says Modern Warfare 4 is “targeting 90 FPS at Recommended Specs without compromising visual quality.” This is a developer-stated goal for a particular hardware tier. It is not a promise that every computer will reach 90 FPS, nor is it an independent benchmark result. The announcement does not publish measured averages for retail builds, specific graphics cards, or every resolution and aspect ratio.
The distinction matters because frame rate depends on resolution, graphics settings, upscaling, map complexity, player count, effects and background processes. A system that approaches 90 FPS at 1080p may produce a lower result at 1440p or 4K. An ultrawide resolution with more horizontal pixels can also increase the rendering workload, although the exact impact depends on the chosen mode and settings.

Match frame rate to the monitor and the experience
Think of frame rate as an outcome to sustain, not a number to quote in isolation. If your display refreshes at 60 Hz, a stable result near that refresh rate may be more useful than an unstable 90 FPS. On a higher-refresh display, additional frames can make aiming and camera movement feel more immediate, but only when the game maintains them with consistent frame times. The 90 FPS announcement gives you a reference point for the recommended tier; it does not establish a minimum competitive standard.
- Average FPS: A summary of performance over a test period. It can hide short stutters.
- Frame-time consistency: How evenly frames arrive. Uneven frame times can feel jerky even when the average looks high.
- Input latency: The delay between an action and its visible result. This is affected by the game, rendering queue, peripherals and settings, not just FPS.
Use the built-in benchmark after launch
Modern Warfare 4’s announcement describes a benchmark that reports average FPS, CPU usage, GPU usage, ping and input latency, with zone-by-zone results and suggested settings. That makes it the most practical way to evaluate your own installation once the game is available.
- Install the game and update your graphics driver and operating system before testing.
- Close unnecessary recording, browser and overlay applications so they do not distort the result.
- Set the resolution and aspect ratio you actually intend to play, such as 1440p ultrawide, rather than benchmarking at a different mode.
- Run the benchmark with a sensible preset and record its average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping and input-latency readings.
- Apply one change at a time—such as a lower shadow setting, a different upscaler or a lower render resolution—and run the benchmark again.
- Keep the settings that improve consistency without making the image or controls unacceptable to you.
Because the game had not launched at the October 13, 2026 authoritative timestamp, no independent Modern Warfare 4 benchmark numbers are available here. Treat the in-game report as a measurement of your PC under your chosen conditions, not as a universal score.
Resolution and ultrawide support
What is explicitly supported
The official PC announcement names 1080p, 1440p and 4K resolutions and says the game supports both standard and ultrawide displays. That is important for players who do not use a conventional 16:9 monitor. It confirms that ultrawide users are part of the supported PC audience, but it does not specify every aspect ratio, exact field-of-view behavior, menu layout, cutscene treatment or performance result.
| Display choice | What is announced | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p standard | Supported resolution category | Actual FPS on particular hardware |
| 1440p standard | Supported resolution category | Settings required to reach 90 FPS |
| 4K standard | Supported resolution category | Retail performance and recommended GPU tier |
| Ultrawide | Explicitly supported display category | Exact aspect ratios, interface behavior and performance at each width |
Why aspect ratio is more than a resolution setting
Resolution describes the number of pixels; aspect ratio describes the screen’s shape. An ultrawide panel can show a broader horizontal view, but the game’s field-of-view rules determine how that space is used. Do not assume that every mode automatically provides a wider competitive view or that every menu and cinematic will fill the panel identically. The announcement confirms category-level support, not those implementation details.
Ultrawide owners should test the complete experience: gameplay, menus, cinematics, weapon inspection, aiming-down-sights and split-screen or social interfaces if applicable. Check for pillarboxing, stretched elements or unusually large performance drops. These are practical checks for your own system, not problems established by the announcement.

Choosing between 1080p, 1440p and 4K
Choose the display you can drive at a stable frame rate while preserving the visual clarity you need. A 1440p ultrawide can be a balanced choice for players who want more workspace than 16:9 without committing to the pixel load of 4K, but the correct choice depends on your hardware and priorities. The existence of support for all three named resolutions does not mean they have equivalent performance requirements.

Graphics options and upscaling
Announced rendering options
Modern Warfare 4 lists NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X among its graphics options. Their inclusion gives players several ways to balance image quality and rendering speed. The announcement does not provide a controlled comparison, latency study or image-quality ranking, so no option can responsibly be called “best” for every GPU.
When evaluating an upscaler or anti-aliasing mode, compare like for like: keep the resolution, field of view and graphics preset constant, run the benchmark, then inspect movement, foliage, particle effects, distant targets and text. A setting that raises the average FPS may still be a poor fit if it introduces distracting artifacts or makes targets harder to read.
Adjust the settings with the largest likely impact first
- Start with render resolution or the upscaling mode when the GPU is the limiting component.
- Reduce expensive effects such as shadows, volumetrics or reflections if the benchmark identifies a GPU bottleneck.
- Lower simulation, view-distance or other CPU-heavy options if the CPU is limiting performance.
- Keep visibility-related controls readable; a small frame-rate gain is not worthwhile if enemies or interface elements become difficult to distinguish.
These are tuning principles, not Modern Warfare 4 test results. Use the benchmark’s zone-by-zone suggestions and your own visual inspection to decide which compromise works.
Customization: why “800+ options” matters
What the number covers
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 includes more than 800 customization options spanning graphics, gameplay, input devices, interface and more. The value is breadth: different players can configure rendering, controls and information display around their hardware, peripherals and comfort. The number does not mean every option is equally important, and it does not describe how many are available on every platform or in every mode.

Mouse-and-keyboard players should look for sensitivity, key binding, polling and aim-related controls. The announcement specifically mentions sub-frame mouse polling, which is intended to provide more granular input sampling. Whether it improves your experience depends on your mouse, USB configuration, frame rate and the rest of the input pipeline. Test it rather than assuming that a higher polling setting is automatically better.

Controller users should similarly check button mapping, stick response, trigger behavior and vibration preferences. Bind essential actions where they are comfortable, then verify the layout in a private match or training environment before relying on it in a competitive mode.
Field of view and visibility
Enhanced FOV is listed as an announced feature. A wider field of view can show more of the scene horizontally, but it may make distant targets appear smaller and can increase the rendering workload. Change it gradually, replay the same route and check target readability, motion comfort and benchmark performance. Do not treat a particular FOV value as universally optimal.
Interface and accessibility
Interface customization can affect minimap presentation, indicators, text, colors and information density. Accessibility controls may help with vision, hearing, motor or motion-sensitivity needs. The practical test is whether important information remains legible during movement and combat. Save a baseline configuration before experimenting so you can restore it quickly after an update.
A practical setup workflow for a new PC installation
- Confirm the display mode: Select the monitor’s native resolution and its intended standard or ultrawide aspect ratio.
- Choose a starting preset: Begin with the recommended or balanced preset instead of changing dozens of options at once.
- Run the benchmark: Record average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping, input latency and zone results.
- Identify the limiter: A GPU-bound result points toward resolution, upscaling and visual-effect changes; a CPU-bound result points toward simulation, view distance and background-process checks.
- Set a realistic frame-rate goal: Use your monitor’s refresh rate and the consistency you can sustain, with 90 FPS as the announced recommended-spec target rather than a guarantee.
- Tune input and FOV: Change sensitivity, bindings, polling and Enhanced FOV in small increments, testing each change.
- Check the whole interface: Inspect menus, HUD elements, cinematics and ultrawide behavior, not only a single match.
- Save and document the profile: Keep notes or screenshots of settings that work so an update or driver change is easier to troubleshoot.
How to interpret PC specification tiers
Do not transfer hardware requirements or FPS claims from one Call of Duty title to another. For example, Activision’s November 3, 2025 Black Ops 7 PC announcement described a recommended tier aimed at 60 FPS in most situations at high settings and separately described competitive/high-refresh and ultra-4K tiers. Those figures apply to Black Ops 7, not Modern Warfare 4. They demonstrate why each game’s own specification table and benchmark should take priority.
Modern Warfare 4’s 90 FPS statement also lacks a component list in the evidence available here. Until the complete final requirements and independent tests are published, avoid buying hardware based solely on that target. Compare your system against the game’s eventual requirements, then validate with the built-in benchmark at your intended resolution.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Confusing a target with a guarantee
Symptom: Your PC falls below 90 FPS and appears to contradict the announcement.
Fix: Check resolution, preset, upscaling, background applications and benchmark conditions. The target is for recommended specifications and is not a universal guarantee.

Benchmarking at the wrong aspect ratio
Symptom: A benchmark looks satisfactory, but ultrawide gameplay is slower or poorly framed.
Fix: Run the test at the native ultrawide resolution and inspect menus and cinematics as well as gameplay.
Changing too many settings at once
Symptom: You cannot tell which change helped or caused an artifact.
Fix: Restore your baseline, alter one setting or related group, rerun the benchmark and record the result.
Assuming more customization always improves play
Symptom: The interface is cluttered or controls feel inconsistent after extensive tweaking.
Fix: Keep a simple baseline profile, change only settings tied to a specific problem and test bindings before a serious match.
Using another game’s requirements
Symptom: You plan an upgrade from Black Ops 7 figures or another older title.
Fix: Treat those specifications as title-specific examples and wait for Modern Warfare 4’s final requirements and your own benchmark results.
What to look for after launch
Once Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23, 2026, the most useful evidence will be repeatable tests on final code at 1080p, 1440p, 4K and representative ultrawide resolutions. Look for average and low-percentile frame rates, frame-time graphs, input latency, image-quality comparisons among the listed upscalers and behavior across demanding multiplayer areas. Until those tests exist, the official feature list tells you what the PC version is designed to offer, while the benchmark will tell you how your own configuration performs.
