UPI is only one payment rail. An Indian small business can combine cash, cheques, debit and credit cards, NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, net banking, and wallets or other prepaid payment instruments. The right mix depends on whether you sell at a counter, online, or by invoice; when you need the money; what your customers can use; and the fees, equipment and reconciliation work you can manage.
Cards and bank transfers are not interchangeable. A PoS terminal or online payment gateway connects customers to card networks or selected bank-payment methods, while NEFT, RTGS and IMPS move money from one bank account to another. Ask your bank, acquiring institution or gateway for current fees, limits, settlement timing, refund and dispute procedures, supported networks and eligibility before you commit.
Start with the way you sell
Payment acceptance is easier to plan when you begin with the sales event rather than with a particular app. A shop serving walk-in customers has different requirements from an online store collecting invoices. Many businesses use two or three methods so a failed channel does not stop a sale.
Counter and field sales
Cash remains useful for face-to-face sales, especially where customers do not want to use a digital method. Plan for secure handling, making change, end-of-day counting, deposits and a record that ties each receipt to the sale. Cash has no bank-settlement wait, but it creates physical-security and reconciliation tasks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cards are the main non-cash option for a physical counter. A debit or credit card is inserted, tapped or swiped on a compatible PoS terminal. The terminal, connectivity and merchant account must be arranged through a bank or acquiring provider; a consumer card reader is not automatically suitable for business acceptance. Confirm which card networks are supported, how receipts are produced, when funds settle, and how refunds or disputed transactions are handled.
Cheques can suit invoice-style or business-to-business payments when both parties already use them. They require a deposit and clearing process, and the payment is not final until the cheque clears. Record the cheque number, date, payer, invoice and deposit status so a dishonoured cheque can be identified quickly.
Online checkout
An online seller normally uses a payment gateway or another acquiring service to present payment choices at checkout. Depending on the provider’s offering, the page may accept cards, net banking and selected wallets or prepaid instruments. The gateway is a service layer: it connects your site or app to one or more payment systems and reports the transaction result to you.

Do not assume that a gateway supports every bank, card network or wallet. Before signing up, ask for the exact methods available to your business, technical integration requirements, settlement schedule, transaction and refund fees, dispute process, limits and onboarding documents. Test successful payments, failed payments, cancellations and refunds in the environment the provider supplies.
Invoices and remote collection
For an invoice, a customer can transfer money directly from a bank account using NEFT, RTGS or IMPS, or pay by cheque. You provide the beneficiary details and a reference such as the invoice number, then verify the credit in your account before marking the invoice paid. A screenshot or message from the payer is not the same as a confirmed bank credit.
Non-UPI options at a glance

How bank transfers differ
NEFT
NEFT is a bank-to-bank transfer system operated by the Reserve Bank of India. It is suitable for invoices and account payments when the payer has your bank details. The payer’s bank may impose a charge or require a particular process, and the time at which your account is credited depends on the bank’s handling and the transaction conditions. Give customers the exact account name, number, bank and branch or routing details required by your bank, and ask them to include an invoice reference.
Recommended Free Tools
RTGS
RTGS means real-time gross settlement: each transfer is settled individually rather than netted with other payments. Businesses may choose it for a high-value or time-sensitive bank transfer, but “real-time” does not remove the need to check the bank’s current eligibility rules, minimum amount, charges, cut-off or beneficiary requirements. The RBI operates RTGS; your bank supplies the customer-facing process and current terms.
IMPS
IMPS is the National Payments Corporation of India’s real-time interbank service and is available around the clock. NPCI’s published page states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for most channels, with exceptions for SMS and IVR channels. That figure is attributed to the page accessed in 2026 and should be checked against the live NPCI and bank terms before you advertise a limit, because operating rules can change. Banks may also apply their own daily limits and charges.

For any transfer method, reconcile the credit shown in your bank statement with the invoice or order. Never release goods solely because a customer says a transfer was made.
Cards: accepting them in a shop or online
Physical card acceptance
- Define the use case. Estimate counter volume, average ticket, expected peak periods and whether you need printed or digital receipts.
- Contact a bank or acquirer. Request merchant onboarding requirements, supported debit and credit card networks, terminal connectivity, transaction fees, settlement timing, refund and chargeback procedures, and any rental or service charges.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the proposed PoS terminal works with the acquiring account, your network connection and the card types your customers carry. The Ministry of MSME guidance identifies PoS as the physical card-acceptance use case; it does not establish eligibility for a particular terminal or provider.
- Complete verification and configure staff access. Use the merchant name and settlement account that match your business records. Limit who can issue refunds or close a batch, and keep the provider’s support contact available.
- Run controlled tests. Test an approval, decline, cancellation and refund, then confirm that the terminal receipt, customer receipt and bank settlement can be matched.
- Reconcile daily. Compare terminal totals with orders and the bank credit, allowing for the provider’s stated settlement cycle and any documented fee or adjustment.
Online card and net-banking acceptance
- Select the gateway service layer. Ask which cards, banks, net-banking options and wallets are actually enabled for your merchant category and region.
- Review commercial and operational terms. Obtain the current transaction, refund and dispute fees; settlement schedule; payout account requirements; limits; service availability; and account-closure process in writing.
- Integrate the checkout. Follow the gateway’s documented checkout or plug-in process, and ensure that your order system records a unique order or invoice reference.
- Handle status safely. Treat the gateway’s confirmed server-side result or dashboard status as the payment decision, not only a customer’s browser message. Keep failed and abandoned attempts separate from paid orders.
- Test the full lifecycle. Verify successful payment, decline, timeout, duplicate submission, cancellation and refund, including how each status appears in your order records.
- Monitor settlement and disputes. Match payouts to the gateway report and bank statement, and respond within the provider’s stated window if a customer disputes a transaction.
Net banking, wallets and prepaid instruments
Net banking lets a customer approve payment from a participating bank account during an online checkout. It is not the same as a direct NEFT, RTGS or IMPS transfer: the gateway presents the bank option and reports the checkout result, while the provider controls which banks and settlement arrangements are available.
Wallets and prepaid payment instruments hold stored value that the customer spends through an accepted merchant setup. They are a separate category from a direct bank transfer. Acceptance, merchant onboarding, refund behavior and settlement depend on the wallet or issuer and the acquiring arrangement. Ask whether the balance is settled per transaction or in a scheduled payout, and how a reversed or refunded payment is represented in your records.

Fees, settlement and reconciliation questions to ask
No single method is cheapest or fastest for every business. A useful comparison includes more than the headline transaction rate:
- Is there a one-time setup, terminal rental, gateway subscription or connectivity charge?
- Is the quoted transaction fee different for debit cards, credit cards, net banking, wallets or particular networks?
- When does the money become available in the bank account, and are weekends or holidays treated differently?
- Are refunds charged, and can a partial refund be issued?
- What happens when a customer disputes a card payment or a transfer is credited without an identifiable reference?
- Which reports show gross sales, fees, refunds, reversals and net settlement?
- What limits, business categories, documents and bank-account conditions apply?
Keep one internal record for every sale: order or invoice number, customer reference, method, amount, date, status, refund or dispute state and the date the funds were matched to the bank. This makes cash counts, cheque deposits, card batches and bank transfers comparable during reconciliation.
Build a practical payment mix
Small retail shop
Use cash plus a compatible card terminal, and display clear instructions for either method. A cheque policy can be limited to known business customers if clearing delays and dishonour risk are acceptable. Reconcile the cash drawer and terminal totals separately.
Service business billing by invoice
Offer NEFT and IMPS for routine invoices, with RTGS available when a customer needs a real-time gross transfer and meets the bank’s current rules. Include the invoice number in the transfer instructions and wait for confirmed credit. Keep cheque acceptance as an optional channel where customers still require it.
Online store
Use a gateway that combines cards with the net-banking methods and wallets your customers actually use. Keep a direct bank-transfer instruction as a fallback only if you can verify credits and manually match orders without shipping an unpaid order.
Mixed or seasonal business
Start with the smallest combination that covers your channels, then measure declined payments, settlement delays, refund workload and reconciliation time. Add a method when it solves a documented customer or operational problem, not simply because another method exists.
Quick Recap
Common failure points and fixes
- “The customer paid, but I cannot find it.” Request the bank reference and amount, search the statement for the correct date range, and keep the order pending until the credit is confirmed.
- “The card terminal shows success, but the payout is missing.” Compare the terminal batch or provider report with the stated settlement cycle, then contact the acquirer with the transaction reference.
- “The online checkout returned an error after the customer was debited.” Do not create a second charge immediately. Check the gateway status and reconciliation report, then follow its reversal or refund procedure.
- “A cheque was recorded as paid too early.” Mark it as deposited or pending until clearing completes; retain the dishonour process and customer contact details.
- “A method is unavailable to a customer.” Confirm whether the limitation is the customer’s bank or wallet, your gateway configuration, a transaction limit or a temporary service issue. Keep a documented fallback.
Final checklist before going live
- Choose methods for each sales channel rather than trying to enable everything.
- Confirm current fees, limits, supported networks, eligibility and settlement with the relevant bank, acquirer or gateway.
- Test approvals, failures, refunds, reversals and duplicate attempts.
- Publish accurate payment instructions and the account name customers should see.
- Assign responsibility for cash counts, cheque deposits, payout matching and dispute responses.
- Review the mix periodically because provider terms and operating limits change.
