If your child is facing online harassment, begin with safety and a calm conversation—not punishment. Listen, save what happened, use the platform’s reporting and blocking tools, and involve the school or authorities when the facts call for it.
The steps below help you decide what to do first, what information to preserve, when to report, and when professional support is appropriate.
What should I do first if my child is being harassed online?
Make immediate safety the first question
Dr. Sameer Hinduja, professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center, and faculty associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center, puts the priority plainly: “First and foremost, make sure your child feels, and is, safe.”
Ask whether anyone has threatened physical harm, knows where your child is, is trying to meet them, or is sharing private information. If there is an immediate risk, move the child to a safe place and contact emergency services or local police. Do not wait for a complete record of every message before seeking urgent help.

Listen before deciding on consequences
Choose a private moment and invite your child to explain what happened in their own words. Useful openings include “I’m glad you told me,” “You do not have to handle this alone,” and “What would help you feel safer right now?” Keep your voice steady, avoid blaming questions, and do not suggest that a post, photo, game, or message caused the harassment.
Let your child help shape reasonable next steps. They may want a trusted adult present, a temporary break from a particular app, or help reporting an account. You can set safety limits while preserving their sense of control.
Should I take away the phone?
Not as an automatic response. HealthyChildren.org cautions that a child may experience device removal as punishment and become less willing to disclose future incidents. You can change notifications, pause a specific app, adjust privacy settings, or keep the device available for evidence and support. Explain any temporary restriction, its purpose, and when you will review it together.

Preserve the material before an account is deleted, a post is edited, or a conversation scrolls out of view. A short, organized record is more useful than a large unsorted collection.

- Capture the content. Save screenshots of messages, posts, comments, profiles, usernames, URLs shown in the app, and any attached images or videos. Include enough of the screen to show context and the account involved.
- Record when it happened. Note the date and time of each incident, using your local time zone. If the platform displays a different time zone, record that as well.
- Describe the event. Write what happened in neutral language: what was sent or posted, where it appeared, who could see it, and how your child encountered it.
- Track patterns. Note frequency, severity, location, witnesses, third-party involvement, and whether the conduct affected school, travel, activities, or home life.
- Keep originals secure. Store copies in a location your child can access with you but that is not publicly shared. Keep the original files unchanged; make working copies if you need to crop or highlight details for a report.
Do not reply to harmful messages and do not forward them to friends or group chats. A response can escalate contact, alter the record, or spread humiliating material. If an image may be illegal or sexually explicit and involves a child, do not copy or circulate it; seek guidance from law enforcement or a child-protection authority.
Which response path fits the situation?
The right channel depends on urgency, who is involved, and what kind of help your child needs.

Should I block and report the account?
In ordinary cases of repeated harassment, StopBullying.gov recommends blocking the person and reporting the conduct through the relevant online service. Save evidence first, because blocking can make the account or conversation harder for you to view later.
Use built-in safety controls
- Open the account, message, post, or comment involved.
- Use the service’s report option and select the closest category, such as harassment, threats, non-consensual intimate material, or hate-based conduct.
- Block or restrict the account. Consider limiting direct messages, mentions, tags, or comments from unknown users.
- Save the confirmation number, email, or in-app status if the service provides one.
- Check for related accounts or reposts without repeatedly searching for upsetting material. Ask the service how to report copies.
Labels and menu locations change, so use the current help or safety center inside the service. Reporting does not replace emergency help when there is a threat of violence or another immediate risk.

How do I report cyberbullying at school?
When a classmate is involved, or online conduct affects attendance, learning, friendships, transportation, or school activities, contact the school even if the messages were sent off campus. Policies and legal duties differ by state and school system.
Prepare a concise report
- Give the child’s name, grade, and a safe way to contact you.
- State the dates, platforms, accounts, and a neutral description of what occurred.
- Attach or offer the preserved screenshots and incident log; keep your own copies.
- Explain the impact on safety, attendance, sleep, concentration, or participation without diagnosing the child.
- Ask which policy applies, who will investigate, how confidentiality will be handled, and when you should expect an update.
Ask whether the school has a designated counselor, safeguarding lead, or formal reporting form. Keep a record of meetings, emails, promised actions, and follow-up dates. If the first contact does not respond, use the school’s published escalation route or the relevant district or state education agency.
A school may not be able to control every off-campus post, but it can still address conduct that disrupts school or threatens safety. Do not demand that another child be publicly identified or punished; focus on stopping the behavior, protecting students, and receiving a clear safety plan.

StopBullying.gov identifies several circumstances for law-enforcement reporting: threats of violence; child pornography or sexually explicit messages or photos; recording someone where they reasonably expect privacy; stalking; and hate crimes. State laws may cover additional conduct, and the correct agency varies by location.

Contact local authorities or the applicable state or local education agency for jurisdiction-specific guidance. If the child is in immediate danger, call emergency services in the child’s country rather than waiting for a school or platform response. Preserve the original messages and account details, and follow instructions about what to keep or submit.
What signs might I notice?
Possible signs include a sudden change in mood or behavior, withdrawal, avoiding social situations, losing interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, or unusual distress after using a device. A child may also become unusually protective of a screen or stop using a normally favored app.
These signs are prompts for a supportive conversation, not proof of online harassment. Ask whether the change seems connected to a device, game, group chat, or online interaction. Avoid demanding passwords or scrolling through private conversations in anger; explain what information is needed for safety and involve the child where possible.

UNICEF’s parent guidance recommends contacting a mental-health professional or family doctor when emotional, psychological, or physical effects do not fade within a day or two. Examples include continuing anxiety, low mood, panic, sleep problems, stomachaches, headaches, school refusal, or thoughts of self-harm.

Ask the child’s clinician how to discuss the online events and what symptoms to monitor. If your child mentions wanting to die, has self-harmed, cannot stay safe, or faces immediate physical danger, seek urgent local help or emergency services now. Stay with the child when possible and remove immediate means of harm while professional help is on the way.
How can our family reduce future risk?
Build a routine conversation
Talk regularly about online experiences before a crisis. Agree that your child can report frightening or humiliating content without automatically losing access to every device. Discuss what personal information should remain private, how to leave a group chat, and which adults can help.
Review settings together
Check privacy, tagging, direct-message, location-sharing, comment, and parental-control settings on the services your child actually uses. Review them after major app updates because labels and defaults can change. Help your child recognize impersonation, suspicious links, and requests for private images or passwords.

Keep an up-to-date list of the platforms, games, and group chats your child uses, including secondary accounts. Learn where each service places its report, block, and account-recovery tools. This preparation is more useful than trying to investigate every interaction after harm occurs.
Consider monitoring carefully
A government parent guide says some families may consider monitoring applications for screen-time management, website blocking, or content monitoring. Such tools are optional, can miss context, and should not be presented as necessary or as a substitute for communication. Explain what is monitored, who can see it, and when the arrangement will be reviewed. Trust and an open conversation remain central.
What do the available school figures show?
The National Center for Justice Statistics reported that 9% of public schools said the school environment was affected by cyberbullying in the 2017–2018 school year, and 8% said staff resources were used to deal with it. StopBullying.gov cites these figures from the 2019 Indicators of School Crime and Safety reference.
Those percentages are school reports for 2017–2018, not a current estimate of how many children experience online harassment. They describe reported effects and staff resource use, so they should not be read as a prevalence rate for individual children.
