Parents can link their account to a teen’s ChatGPT account to manage selected settings and, in limited situations, receive safety notifications. Linking does not let a parent read the teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. These are account-level controls—not full device monitoring—and some features and rollout details can vary.
What parental controls do—and do not—let you do
A parent or guardian and a teen can link accounts through an invitation in ChatGPT. Either person can start the invitation; the other must accept it. OpenAI says a teen can be linked to one parent or guardian at a time, and either person can unlink the accounts. See OpenAI’s parental-controls instructions for the current workflow.
Once linked, a parent can manage a selection of settings, including content safeguards and access to certain features. The available controls do not amount to control over every part of the account, nor do they expose the teen’s chats.

OpenAI states that parental controls do not provide access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. In limited safety situations, a parent may receive a notification with information relevant to the concern and account action, but not a conversation transcript. A notification is therefore not a chat-monitoring feed.

Which settings can a linked parent manage?
The choices span content safeguards, data use, feature availability, and scheduled behavior. Defaults and availability can vary, so check the controls actually displayed for the linked account.

Some changes may not take effect immediately. OpenAI notes that a change can apply to new conversations while existing conversations retain their previous settings, so do not assume every open chat changes at once.

Quiet hours, Study hours, and Study mode are different
- Quiet hours restrict use. During the scheduled period, the teen cannot use ChatGPT; the schedule may also include ChatGPT Work.
- Study hours change how eligible new chats begin. During the schedule, new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience start in study mode. The schedule does not block access, and it does not apply to GPT or Project conversations.
- Study mode is the underlying conversation setting. It affects how eligible new main-chat conversations start, rather than setting a period when ChatGPT is unavailable.
OpenAI’s current control descriptions identify these as separate options. If the goal is to limit when ChatGPT can be used, Study hours is not a substitute for Quiet hours.

Teen safeguards and age prediction
OpenAI says accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 may automatically receive ChatGPT for Teens. Identification can use the age provided with the account, verified age, or age prediction. Age prediction is an additional safety check and can apply even if a date of birth was entered at signup.

OpenAI describes age-prediction signals such as broad conversation topics, usage times and patterns, and account age. The company acknowledges the system can be wrong. Users can review the age category at Settings > Account > Age. An adult incorrectly placed in the teen experience may see an option to verify age, but that option is not available to every account. Turning off Reduce sensitive content only changes that one safeguard. Other teen protections, usage limits, safety systems, or age-based restrictions may still apply; the linked account does not become an adult account as a result.

What happens when a teen turns 18?
When ChatGPT identifies an account holder as 18 or older, the account may leave ChatGPT for Teens. The teen protections are turned off and the linked parental-controls connection ends. The parent then loses the ability to manage settings or receive teen safety notifications. OpenAI says automatic transitions are rolling out gradually, so timing and availability may differ among eligible accounts.

Set expectations before linking
- Agree with your teen which settings you intend to manage and why; linking requires acceptance and either person can later unlink.
- Review the available controls together rather than assuming every setting has the same default or is available in every region.
- Choose Quiet hours if the goal is to schedule periods without ChatGPT use; choose Study hours or Study mode only to affect eligible new chats.
- Treat safety notifications as limited alerts, not as a way to review conversations or monitor live activity.
- Check settings after making a change and allow for the possibility that existing conversations retain earlier behavior.
