If social media seems to be worsening your teenager’s mood, sleep, confidence or relationships, start with a calm conversation and a specific observation—not an accusation or an immediate confiscation. Find out what is happening online, reduce the particular exposure or habit that is causing trouble, and agree on boundaries your teen can realistically follow. Keep supportive connections and offline activities in the plan.
If your teen may hurt themselves or someone else, cannot stay safe, or is in an immediate mental-health crisis in the United States, call or text 988 for immediate help. Device settings and a family rule should never delay urgent care.
Why a single screen-time rule may miss the problem
“Social media” is not one uniform experience. A private conversation with a trusted friend, a creative community and a feed filled with harassment can all occur on the same phone. The American Psychological Association (APA) says effects depend on what teens see and do online, their existing strengths or vulnerabilities, and the contexts in which they grow up. Its advisory is informational guidance based on psychological science, not a professional practice guideline, and its evidence base was current through April 2023: causal findings are uncommon and long-term, multiyear outcomes remain uncertain. 1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe U.S. Surgeon General likewise says, “We cannot conclude that social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents.” That is a reason for attentive, individualized parenting—not proof that every teen is harmed or that social media alone caused one teen’s depression or anxiety. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) describes meaningful benefits, including connection, emotional support and creative expression, while concluding that social media can negatively affect youth mental health. U.S. figures in the 2023 Surgeon General advisory show why this deserves attention: up to 95% of 13- to 17-year-olds reported using a social-media platform; nearly two-thirds said they used one daily; and one-third reported using social media “almost constantly.” In a cited survey, teens averaged 3.5 hours per day. More than three hours a day was associated with twice the risk of mental-health problems such as depression and anxiety symptoms, but that association does not establish causation. Forty-six percent of adolescents aged 13–17 said social media made them feel worse about their body image; this was a self-report, not a diagnosis. These figures are U.S.-focused findings summarized in the 2023 advisory, not a measurement of every teen or a current 2026 rate. HHS advisory and cited studies
Start the conversation without triggering a shutdown
Choose a neutral moment—such as a car ride or a walk—rather than interrupting an argument or taking the phone from your teen’s hand. Lead with what you have noticed and an invitation to explain:
- “I’ve noticed you seem exhausted after being online late. What has been happening?”
- “Which parts of your feed feel supportive, and which leave you feeling worse?”
- “Is there something happening online right now that you are worried about?”
- “What makes you want to keep checking this app?”
- “What content feels authentic, and what feels like clickbait or pressure?”
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends listening to a young person’s individual experience. Ask permission before looking at an account or message, and explain any safety reason for needing more information. Avoid opening with “You are addicted,” “Everyone knows this is bad,” or a threat to confiscate the device. A defensive teen is less likely to disclose bullying, sexual exploitation, self-harm content or pressure from peers.

Reflect back what you hear before proposing a solution: “It sounds as if the group chat helps you feel included, but the comments about appearance make you anxious.” Validate the feeling without endorsing harmful behavior. Agree on one small experiment, then set a time to review how it worked.
Identify the exposure and the effect
Track the connection between online events and daily functioning for several days, without turning the record into surveillance. Ask about:
- Mood: sadness, irritability, anxiety, shame, anger or feeling numb after particular posts or interactions.
- Body image and eating: distress after appearance comparisons, dieting pressure or eating-disorder material.
- Safety: cyberbullying, hate or discrimination, threats, sexual exploitation, or self-harm content.
- Sleep and physical needs: staying up to scroll, missing meals, reduced exercise or fatigue at school.
- Roles and relationships: falling grades, missed responsibilities, withdrawing from family or offline friends.
- Control: repeatedly using longer than intended, strong cravings, trying to stop but continuing, hiding use to preserve access, or losing educational or social opportunities.
APA presents those control-related behaviors as signs of problematic use to discuss, not as a parent-administered diagnosis. A single late night does not prove a disorder. Look for a persistent pattern, a clear trigger, or impairment in normal activities. Also ask what is going well online; a supportive friend or identity-affirming community may be an important protective relationship.

Choose a response that matches what is happening
Use the smallest effective change first, involve your teen in the choice, and make the plan feasible for school, friendships, privacy and developmental maturity.

| What you observe | First response | What to agree on | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distress after appearance comparisons or upsetting content | Mute or unfollow triggering accounts; use content controls; discuss how recommendation feeds work. | A short feed “reset” and a check-in about mood and body image. | Persistent shame, eating changes or significant anxiety warrants a clinician’s assessment. |
| Cyberbullying, hate, threats or exploitation | Save evidence, block or report the account, and involve a trusted adult or school safeguarding contact. | Who will be told, what privacy can be preserved, and how your teen will stay connected safely. | Threats, coercion, sexual exploitation or immediate danger require prompt professional or emergency help. |
| Sleep loss or compulsive-feeling checking | Move charging outside the bedroom; disable nonessential notifications; create a predictable wind-down period. | A bedtime and morning routine that applies to adults too. | Ongoing insomnia, daytime impairment or inability to reduce use merits medical advice. |
| Broader depression, anxiety or withdrawal | Ask directly about mood, safety and functioning; maintain supportive contact and routine. | A near-term appointment with a pediatrician or qualified mental-health professional. | Any inability to stay safe is urgent; use crisis services rather than waiting for a family experiment. |
Build a family media plan together
Write a few specific agreements rather than a long list of prohibitions. HHS recommends a family media plan and technology-free zones. AACAP suggests keeping screens out of bedrooms and having screen-free periods during meals, homework and the hour before bedtime. Adapt those ideas to your teen’s schedule and needs:
- Protect sleep. Select a charging location outside bedrooms, set a consistent “devices down” time, and decide how essential calls will get through.
- Protect shared routines. Keep meals, homework and agreed family conversations device-free. Make exceptions explicit for accessibility, safety or school requirements.
- Define private space. Explain what parents may review, why they might review it, and how the teen can regain privacy as trust and digital skills grow.
- Set a review date. Revisit the agreement after one or two weeks. Keep what helps, change what creates unnecessary conflict, and record the teen’s own observations.
For most young people in early adolescence—typically ages 10–14—APA recommends ongoing adult monitoring that includes review, discussion and coaching. Autonomy should increase gradually as digital literacy and judgment develop; an age cutoff is not a universal rule. Older teens still need support, but collaboration and respect for privacy usually make boundaries more sustainable.

Change the feed and the phone settings
Settings are tools, not treatment. Make changes with your teen when possible so they learn how to manage a feed rather than relying on hidden controls.
- Mute, unfollow or leave accounts that reliably trigger distress, comparison or harassment.
- Use the platform’s privacy, comment, message and sensitive-content controls; explain what each setting does and does not prevent.
- Report abusive, threatening or exploitative material, and save evidence before blocking if a complaint may be needed.
- Turn off nonessential push notifications, badges and vibration. Use built-in downtime or focus features for homework and sleep.
- Move especially attention-grabbing apps off the home screen and remove automatic playback where the platform permits it.
AAP encourages experiments with small, sustainable changes and conversations about design features that pull attention back. Do not promise that one filter or timer will solve a mental-health problem; review the actual effect on sleep, mood and relationships.

Protect what is helpful online and offline
A blanket ban can remove a teen’s access to friends, emotional intimacy or peers with shared experiences, particularly during isolation. Ask, “Who online helps you feel understood?” and preserve those healthy relationships while reducing harmful interactions. Plan face-to-face time with friends, regular sleep, movement and activities your teen enjoys—creative work, sports, volunteering, faith communities or clubs. These are not punishments for phone use; they are alternative sources of belonging and recovery.

Model the same habits you request. Put your own phone away during conversations and meals, tell your teen when you are changing a notification habit, and accept that adult boundaries apply to adults too. HHS, APA and AAP all emphasize that family behavior and supportive relationships shape how rules work.
Should you take the phone away?
A total, indefinite confiscation is rarely a good first response because it may cut off support, conceal the real problem and turn disclosure into a power struggle. If a specific feature or contact is causing immediate harm, a short, clearly explained restriction can be reasonable while you report content, contact the school or arrange professional help. Keep a safe way for your teen to reach trusted people, state what must change before access is restored, and set a review time. If safety is at stake, prioritize supervision and qualified help over negotiating a perfect rule.
When to involve a clinician or crisis service
Contact your teen’s pediatrician or a qualified child and adolescent mental-health professional when distress persists or worsens, sleep and eating are disrupted, school or relationships are suffering, or your family cannot reduce the problem despite consistent efforts. Bring concrete observations: dates, sleep changes, mood shifts, affected routines, and the online exposure your teen identifies. AACAP’s public resources include links for finding clinicians: AACAP policy statement and resources.
Ask plainly about self-harm, suicide, abuse, threats and whether your teen feels safe. Stay with them and seek immediate emergency or crisis assistance if they cannot stay safe. Do not wait for a screen-time adjustment, a platform report or a routine appointment to address imminent danger.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell parents
Official guidance supports attention to content, context, developmental stage and individual vulnerability, not a universal daily-minute limit or a claim that social media invariably causes illness. HHS identifies unanswered questions about which content is most harmful and what protects young people. APA notes that relatively few studies address marginalized youth and young people with disabilities or chronic conditions. Your teen’s lived experience and functioning therefore matter more than applying a single number from a national survey.
Use the plan as an ongoing conversation: identify the trigger, make one change, observe sleep and mood, preserve healthy connection, and involve care when impairment or safety concerns appear. That approach addresses the actual problem instead of treating every kind of social-media use as identical.
