OpenAI’s annualized revenue is a run-rate calculation, not a completed-year result. It takes revenue generated during a recent period and scales that pace to 12 months. The latest figure reported by Axios—about $50 billion on October 8, 2026—therefore describes momentum at that point in time. It does not, by itself, show how much revenue OpenAI recognized in a finished fiscal year, whether the company was profitable, how much cash it generated, or whether the same pace will continue.
The apparent change from a previously reported $70 billion figure is also not necessarily a collapse in customer demand. Axios said the earlier number had been grossed up to make comparison with Anthropic more direct, because the companies treat some cloud-partner sales differently in their top-line reporting.
What “annualized revenue” means
Annualized revenue answers a narrow question: “If the company kept earning revenue at the recent rate for a full year, what would that total be?” A simple calculation is:

Annualized revenue = revenue in the measurement period × (12 ÷ number of months in that period)

For example, $4 billion earned over three months would imply a $16 billion annualized pace. That does not mean the company has already earned $16 billion, signed contracts worth $16 billion, or collected $16 billion in cash. It is an extrapolation from a selected period.
The measurement window matters. A monthly figure can move sharply after a large contract, a product launch, a price change, or a temporary usage spike. A quarterly figure is less volatile but still assumes the following nine months resemble the quarter that was measured. Unless a company discloses the period, customer mix, currency treatment, and calculation method, outsiders cannot reproduce the number precisely.
Annualized revenue is different from recognized revenue
Recognized revenue is recorded under the applicable accounting rules as goods or services are delivered. A completed-year revenue number appears in a financial statement covering a defined fiscal year. Annualized revenue instead converts a recent pace into a hypothetical 12-month amount. The two can be close in a stable business, but rapid growth, seasonality, usage-based billing, contract timing, refunds, or accounting changes can make them very different.

People often use “annualized revenue,” “run-rate revenue,” and “ARR” interchangeably, but those labels can describe different calculations. Contract-based ARR may annualize recurring subscriptions that are active at a specific date. A revenue run rate may annualize actual billings or recognized sales from a recent period, including usage that may not recur. OpenAI has reported ARR figures, but the reviewed material does not provide a formal, current definition of how its separate annualized-revenue figure is calculated.

The figures attributed to OpenAI and recent reporting
The following numbers should be read with their source and status attached. OpenAI’s ARR sequence comes from CFO Sarah Friar’s company-authored account. The later annualized-revenue figures come from Axios reporting based on information shared with investors, not from an audited OpenAI annual statement.

The table contains several different measurement concepts. The ARR figures are company-reported recurring-revenue indicators; the $50 billion and $70 billion amounts are annualized-revenue reports; and Altman’s statement was a forward-looking expectation. Treating them as one uninterrupted, audited revenue series would create a false impression of precision.
Why the reported figure moved from $70 billion to about $50 billion
Axios’s October 8 account attributed the gap to the way cloud-partner sales are presented. It said the earlier amount had been grossed up so that OpenAI could be compared more directly with Anthropic, whose reported method counts a customer’s full payment routed through a cloud provider as top-line revenue and records the provider’s share as an expense.
According to the same report, OpenAI records only its share for certain partner transactions. The difference depends on each company’s role and contractual responsibilities in the transaction. If the same underlying customer spending is displayed on a gross basis by one company and a net-of-partner-share basis by another, the top-line figures can diverge even when the commercial activity is similar.

What “grossed up” means here
A gross-up adds the cloud provider’s portion back to the reported amount for comparison. It is a presentation adjustment, not proof that OpenAI retained that portion as revenue or cash. The lower figure therefore should not be described automatically as a $20 billion loss of sales, and the higher figure should not be treated automatically as recognized GAAP revenue.
What the discrepancy does not prove
- It does not establish that either company is misrepresenting its business.
- It does not show which company has stronger margins, customer retention, or cash generation.
- It does not make the two companies fully comparable once other differences in contracts, products, geography, and reporting periods are considered.
What the annualized number can tell you
A run rate can be useful as a momentum indicator. It gives investors and observers a common scale for discussing a fast-growing private company whose audited, publicly filed annual statements may not be available. Changes in the pace can signal shifts in usage, pricing, customer adoption, or capacity.
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar says revenue grew threefold year over year and tenfold from 2023 to 2025. Her account also reports compute capacity of 0.2 gigawatts in 2023, 0.6 gigawatts in 2024, and about 1.9 gigawatts in 2025. OpenAI describes revenue growth as tracking compute growth and says more compute would have enabled faster customer adoption and monetization. Those are the company’s data and interpretation; the cited material does not independently establish causation, profitability, or durability.

Use it to frame scale, not to predict a guaranteed year
The figure can help answer whether the business is operating at a billion-, ten-billion-, or tens-of-billions-of-dollars pace. It cannot tell you that the next four quarters will match the latest period. AI demand, model pricing, inference costs, infrastructure availability, regulation, and competition can all alter the trajectory.

What it does not tell you about OpenAI’s finances
Completed-year revenue
Only a financial statement covering a defined reporting year can show recognized revenue for that year. A run rate may overstate or understate that eventual total because it projects one period forward.
Profit and operating margin
Revenue is the top line. It says nothing by itself about expenses for compute, data-center capacity, research, employees, sales, financing, or cloud partners. A company can grow revenue rapidly while spending more than it earns.
Cash generation and runway
Cash collected from customers, cash paid to suppliers, capital spending, financing proceeds, and working-capital changes are separate questions. Annualized revenue cannot be converted into free cash flow without detailed financial statements.

A usage surge can raise a run rate without creating durable contracts. Conversely, a long-term contract may support future revenue without appearing immediately in recognized sales. Retention, renewal rates, customer concentration, and remaining performance obligations require separate disclosures.

The persistence of the current pace
The calculation assumes the measured period is representative. It may not account for seasonality, one-time deals, temporary capacity constraints, price changes, or a shift from introductory to commercial pricing.

ARR has no single, standardized meaning across companies. A public-company SEC filing from Nutanix, cited as a methodological example, cautions that ARR is not GAAP revenue, is not a GAAP revenue forecast, may not be adjusted for possible customer changes, and may not be comparable between companies. That warning describes Nutanix’s disclosure practice; it does not define OpenAI’s policy.
When OpenAI reports ARR, readers should ask what is included: recurring subscriptions, usage-based API revenue, enterprise commitments, channel sales, or some combination. They should also ask whether the figure is calculated from contracts, billings, recognized revenue, or a management estimate. Without those details, the safest interpretation is that it is a company-defined operating metric rather than an accounting total.
How to compare OpenAI with another company
Before comparing a headline number, align the measurement on every major axis:

Apply those checks before concluding that one company is larger, growing faster, or more efficient. A properly labeled comparison can still be informative, but a bare ranking of headline amounts is not.
A practical way to read the next OpenAI revenue headline
- Identify the metric. Look for “recognized revenue,” “annualized revenue,” “run rate,” or “ARR.” Do not assume the labels are synonyms.
- Record the date and window. Note whether the number reflects a month, quarter, year-end estimate, or an unspecified point in time.
- Check the source. Separate an audited filing from a company-authored statement, an investor presentation, a forecast, or journalism citing people familiar with the figures.
- Look for gross-versus-net treatment. Cloud-provider and reseller arrangements can change the top line without changing customer spending.
- Separate scale from economics. Seek expenses, margins, capital spending, cash flow, and funding information before drawing conclusions about financial health.
- Ask whether the pace is repeatable. Consider usage concentration, contract duration, pricing, capacity, and one-time events.
The bottom line on OpenAI’s annualized revenue
OpenAI’s reported annualized revenue is best read as a snapshot of operating pace. The latest Axios report places that pace near $50 billion as of October 8, 2026, while explaining that the previously reported $70 billion amount had been grossed up for a more comparable presentation with Anthropic’s treatment of certain cloud sales. Neither figure, as presented in the cited material, is a substitute for audited annual revenue.
The number is useful for understanding scale and momentum when its date, source, and accounting treatment are shown. It becomes misleading when it is presented as completed-year revenue, profit, cash flow, a guaranteed forecast, or a standardized ARR measure.
