Open Rack standards provide a framework for making conforming data-center hardware intermateable across conforming racks and power systems. They do not guarantee that every server labeled OCP or ORv3 will fit or operate in every rack. Compatibility depends on the rack version, mounting dimensions, usable depth, rails, busbar location and connector, and the equipment’s electrical requirements.
What Open Rack standards cover
Open Rack is an Open Compute Project (OCP) rack architecture. OCP’s Rack & Power project covers both 19-inch EIA-compatible racks and 21-inch Open Rack designs, as well as rack-level power conversion, storage and control. Its scope also includes shelves, supports, sub-chassis and adapters. These parts work together: a mechanical fit alone does not establish that a device can connect to or operate from a rack’s power system. OCP’s Rack & Power project describes this broader scope.
The Open Rack Base Specification Version 3 says its purpose is “to define all of the requirements needed to ensure intermateability of IT Gear across different racks and power systems developed to the Open Compute Project.” That is an interoperability goal for equipment and systems that meet the relevant requirements—not a promise that any OCP-labeled component will work with any other.

What ORv3 means for a hardware fit
ORv3 means Open Rack Version 3. The V3 base specification, dated 24 August 2022, defines a 48 mm vertical OpenU pitch and optional support for the 44.45 mm EIA 310-D rack-unit pitch. Those pitches differ, so a rack intended to support equipment from both systems needs an appropriate design and mounting hardware; the nominal rack width alone does not establish fit.

Some ORv3 systems use a rack-level DC busbar and blind-mate connections rather than the same power arrangement commonly used by conventional 19-inch servers connected to a rack PDU. A vendor example illustrates the variation: Eaton’s OCP marketplace listing describes convertible rails for 21-inch ORv3 and traditional 19-inch EIA equipment, including mixed configurations, and says its rack can be supplied with or without an ORv3 busbar and power shelf. These are options in that listing, not universal features of ORv3 racks. Eaton Open Rack v3 listing.
Will an OCP server fit in a 19-inch rack?
Not necessarily. Some rack designs support both 21-inch Open Rack and 19-inch EIA equipment when the correct rails, shelves or adapters are fitted. That does not mean an arbitrary OCP server will mount in an arbitrary 19-inch rack. Confirm that the exact rack and server documentation specify the required mounting arrangement and hardware.

Even when the mounting width and pitch work, depth, cable clearance and power interfaces may not. Google’s ORv3 implementation specification addresses both 21-inch OCP and 19-inch EIA payloads and cautions that support for a 21-inch OCP payload by itself does not determine busbar placement for other payloads. - Match the generation and payload. Check which Open Rack version the server supports and whether the rack is designed for that payload and its mounting requirements.
- Verify pitch, width and mounting parts. Determine whether the rack uses the required 48 mm OpenU or 44.45 mm EIA spacing, and confirm that the specified rails, shelves or adapters are included or available for the exact configuration.
- Check usable depth and clearance. Compare the device’s dimensions with the rack’s usable depth, allowing for doors, cabling and installation constraints.
- Confirm the busbar position and connector. Check that the device’s power connector aligns with the rack’s busbar interface. Payload support alone does not establish compatible busbar placement.
- Match the electrical requirements. Verify input voltage, connector type, power capacity and redundancy against the rack’s busbar and power-shelf configuration.
- Confirm the bill of materials and revision. Use documentation for the exact rack and server models and revisions, and identify which conversion parts and power components are included, optional or required.
Why the exact configuration matters
GIGABYTE’s OCP-ORV3 solution sheet lists an ORv3 rack described as 21 inches and 44OU, with one 48V DC busbar and an optional 1OU 33 kW power shelf. It also lists specific server examples with 48V or 48V-to-54V busbar input, along with conversion shelves and other optional parts. Those figures describe the configurations in that vendor’s sheet; they should not be generalized to every ORv3 rack or server. Check the current documentation for the exact product revision before procurement.

For a meaningful comparison between rack options, evaluate the supported 21-inch Open Rack and 19-inch EIA mounting arrangements, vertical pitch and usable height, usable depth and cable access, busbar position and connector, voltage and power-shelf configuration, and which rails or adapters are included. A standards label is a useful starting point, but compatibility depends on the complete rack, hardware and power configuration.
