On-chain experiments let researchers test how real users, incentives, governance, and shocks affect blockchain systems. They show that executable code does not remove every need for trust, that governance choices can have measurable consequences, and that public ledger data can move prices before news is widely announced. But these studies use different designs and measure different outcomes; transparent transactions alone do not prove causation.
What counts as an on-chain experiment?
On-chain research uses transaction records and events in live blockchain systems to examine claims about financial and governance mechanisms. The term covers more than randomized trials: the studies discussed here include natural experiments, quasi-experiments, event studies, and descriptive synthesis. Each design uses a different source of variation, so its conclusions must be read in context.
A 2026 survey by Castillo León and Lehar maps empirical DeFi research across tokens, exchanges, lending, yield farming, derivatives, governance, infrastructure, and regulation. It is a guide to empirical findings, not a complete map of blockchain scholarship: its empirical focus omits theoretical contributions. The survey also identifies open questions around market efficiency, governance, systemic risk, and long-term sustainability. Read the survey.

What have studies found so far?
Code does not eliminate dependence on people
A natural experiment involving the revelation of identities associated with the Abracadabra lending protocol examined what happened when information about people behind the system became public. Saengchote, Putniņš, and Samphantharak found serious damage to the protocol and concluded that users’ trust in individuals and their character remained relevant. Their analysis also identifies “protocol-run risk”: smart contracts do not make every operational or human dependency disappear. This is evidence from one stablecoin-lending case, not proof that every protocol will react the same way. Read the study.

Governance design can accompany different economic outcomes
Bhambhwani’s study of token allocations in the top 50 DeFi protocols reported that protocols with greater insider control had fewer deposits, lower token values, and increased risk. Its event-study analysis found deposits rose after airdrops. These are findings from the paper’s sample and analysis; they should not be treated as universal laws or as proof that any one allocation choice will produce the same outcome elsewhere. Read the paper.
Resource shocks can help test decentralization claims
A 2026 quasi-experimental study used three policy-related, infrastructure-related, and technical shocks to examine blockchain decentralization. Ju, Kumar, Valavi, and Aral report suggestive evidence that flexibility in consensus-mechanism resources supports sustained decentralization. “Suggestive” matters: the paper does not establish a universal causal rule for every network or consensus design. On-chain information may reach prices before public announcements
In a study of DeFi hacks, Azar, Olivas, and Sinha at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York report that approximately 36 percent of the total 24-hour price decline—approximately 27 percent—occurred before the public announcement. The result concerns the timing of price changes around the hacks studied, between blockchain-recorded information and social-media announcements; it is not a general statistic about crypto markets. The authors write: “This evidence suggests sophisticated traders rapidly exploit their ability to process complex, publicly available on-chain data, capturing informational rents.” Read Staff Report 1153.
Why different designs answer different questions
| Study | Design and variation | Outcome examined | How to read the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abracadabra lending | Natural experiment around revelation of identities associated with the protocol | Protocol damage and the role of trust in people | One stablecoin-lending case; it highlights human and operational dependencies rather than measuring trust across DeFi. |
| Top 50 DeFi protocols | Protocol comparison and event study around airdrops | Deposits, token values, and risk | Findings describe the paper’s sample and analysis; they do not establish a universal governance effect. |
| Blockchain decentralization | Quasi-experimental analysis of three shocks | Sustained decentralization and resource flexibility | The authors characterize the evidence as suggestive. |
| DeFi hacks | Event analysis of price discovery around information and public announcements | Price declines and timing of information incorporation | The reported figures apply to the hacks and announcement windows examined. |
A natural shock, a set of quasi-experimental shocks, and an event study do not provide interchangeable evidence. Researchers need to explain what changed, what they compare it with, and which assumptions support their interpretation. An event happening before an outcome is not, by itself, proof that the event caused it.

Why measuring on-chain activity is difficult
A visible transaction count or dollar total is not a neutral description of economic use. The Bank for International Settlements’ 2026 Working Paper 1377 identifies several choices that can make common indicators differ substantially: how Bitcoin transaction values are aggregated, how researchers handle smart-contract programmability and spurious contracts, and whether use cases such as stablecoins are comparable across chains. Its authors state: “We show that commonly used measures of cryptoasset and DeFi activity can differ substantially depending on how blockchain data are treated.” Their paper’s views do not necessarily represent the official views of the BIS or its member central banks. Read BIS Working Paper 1377.
Those measurement choices affect interpretation as well as totals. A study should make clear how it attributes addresses to protocols, aggregates transactions, classifies contracts, and compares activity between chains. Without those details, apparent differences in activity may reflect data construction rather than a meaningful difference in economic use.

How to judge an on-chain finding
- Identify the design. Is it a natural experiment, quasi-experiment, event study, or descriptive synthesis? What event or comparison supplies the variation?
- Check the outcome. Deposits, token values, risk, decentralization, prices, and measured activity are distinct outcomes. A result for one should not be silently extended to another.
- Keep the scope attached. Note the protocol, sample, market event, chains, period, and publication date when the study reports them.
- Read the authors’ qualification. A finding described as suggestive or sample-specific should not be upgraded into a general causal claim.
- Inspect the data construction. Ask how addresses, transactions, contracts, and cross-chain use cases were classified or aggregated.
Why the experiments matter
Blockchain data make some system activity observable, but visibility is only a starting point. Researchers still have to distinguish technical activity from economic use, identify a credible comparison, and show why a result applies to the system and period studied. When those limits are made explicit, on-chain experiments can test claims about trust, governance, decentralization, and market information against observed outcomes—without mistaking transparency for proof.
