Tablet display specifications describe different things: refresh rate controls how often the image updates, HDR describes the range of brightness and color a display can reproduce, and brightness tells you how much light it can produce under a particular test condition. OLED tablets add a fourth important characteristic: each pixel emits its own light, so pixels can switch completely off for very deep blacks.

A 120Hz label does not mean a tablet runs at 120Hz constantly, an HDR badge does not guarantee impressive HDR, and a high nit number is meaningless without knowing whether it is a small highlight or the entire screen. Compare the conditions behind each figure, not just the headline number.

What OLED changes compared with an LCD tablet

OLED (organic light-emitting diode) pixels are self-emitting. Each pixel produces its own light instead of relying on a separate backlight. When an OLED pixel is meant to display black, it can turn off, which produces extremely deep blacks and very high contrast in a dark scene.

Because the pixels switch state directly, OLED panels can also respond quickly to changes in the image. That can reduce visible motion smear during scrolling, animation and games. The trade-off is that OLED tablets may produce less overall light than an LCD in some bright-room or outdoor situations. Samsung’s display guidance notes that OLED pixels light independently, respond quickly and generally have lower peak brightness than LCD in bright environments.

OLED’s contrast advantage is most obvious when a bright object is shown against black. A star field, subtitle over a dark film scene or a game with illuminated objects in a cave can look more three-dimensional because black areas are not being lifted by a backlight. That benefit is separate from refresh rate: a 60Hz OLED still updates 60 times per second, while a 120Hz LCD still updates 120 times per second.

What “120Hz” means on a tablet

Hertz (Hz) is the number of times the display can update each second. At 60Hz, a tablet can present up to 60 refreshes per second; at 120Hz, it can present up to 120. A higher rate can make scrolling through a web page, dragging windows or panning a game look smoother because each movement is represented by more frequent updates.

Refresh rate is a ceiling, not a permanent operating speed

The number on the box is normally the panel’s maximum or selected mode. The tablet may run below that rate to save power or because the content does not provide enough new frames. Apple’s current iPad Pro specifications list adaptive ProMotion from 10Hz to 120Hz, rather than a permanently fixed 120Hz. The display can lower its rate for static content and raise it when interaction or animation benefits from faster updates.

The useful rate also depends on the app, operating system and source frame rate. A 24-frame-per-second film cannot become a genuine 120-frame-per-second source simply because the panel supports 120Hz. Likewise, a game must render enough frames for a 120Hz mode to show additional motion detail. Samsung cautions that refresh rate may vary with input-source performance.

What you notice at different rates

  • 60Hz: Standard for many tablets. Static reading is unaffected, but fast scrolling can look less fluid than on a higher-rate panel.
  • 90Hz: A moderate improvement in interface motion when the software supports it.
  • 120Hz: Smoother scrolling, pen movement and supported games, provided the tablet and app can sustain the rate.
  • Adaptive ranges: A wide range, such as 10–120Hz, lets the tablet balance smoothness with efficiency instead of using the maximum for every task.

Does a higher refresh rate use more battery?

Running the display and graphics pipeline at a high rate can require more work on some devices, but there is no universal battery penalty that applies to every tablet. Panel design, processor workload, brightness, app behavior and adaptive-rate software all matter. Use the tablet’s automatic or adaptive mode unless you specifically need the maximum rate, and rely on model-specific testing for battery comparisons rather than assuming that every 120Hz tablet lasts a particular amount of time.

What HDR means on an OLED tablet

HDR stands for high dynamic range. It allows compatible content to represent a wider usable range between dark and bright tones, along with a broader range of color and contrast, than standard dynamic range (SDR). On an OLED screen, the ability to turn pixels off gives HDR scenes a strong black-level foundation; bright highlights can stand out without making the surrounding dark area gray.

HDR is a chain, not a single switch. The video or game must be mastered in HDR, the operating system and app must recognize it, the tablet must support the relevant HDR format, and the panel must have enough brightness, color capability and contrast to show the intended difference. “HDR compatible” therefore indicates signal support, not a guaranteed level of visual impact.

Why a real DisplayHDR certification matters

VESA’s DisplayHDR program is an open standard. Its certified tiers test luminance, color gamut, bit depth, black level and color error. VESA states that only displays meeting all of the requirements may carry the DisplayHDR logo.

Look for the complete certification name, such as DisplayHDR True Black, rather than an informal label such as “HDR-400.” VESA specifically warns that pseudo-labels are not equivalent to a certified DisplayHDR 400 product. Certification is useful because it establishes a tested performance floor; an HDR icon printed by a manufacturer may only describe compatibility.

DisplayHDR True Black tiers

True Black is the DisplayHDR family optimized for emissive displays such as OLED. The current VESA table lists these tiers:

Certification What the tier communicates
DisplayHDR True Black 400 A certified True Black level with the tier’s required peak luminance, color, bit-depth, black-level and color-error tests.
DisplayHDR True Black 500 A higher certified luminance tier with the same category of color and black-level requirements.
DisplayHDR True Black 600 A still higher tested peak-luminance tier for an OLED-class display.
DisplayHDR True Black 1000 A high-luminance OLED tier. VESA added this level on December 30, 2024 to validate higher-brightness OLED displays.
DisplayHDR True Black 1400 The highest True Black tier listed in VESA’s table, with its own tested luminance and image-quality requirements.

The tier number is meaningful only when it is an actual VESA certification. It should not be treated as a complete description of sustained full-screen brightness, viewing-room performance or battery life.

VESA task-group chairman Roland Wooster described the ability of OLED displays to reach 1,000-nit HDR peaks as “a significant breakthrough” and a crossover point for content-creation applications. That statement concerns peak HDR capability; it does not mean every OLED tablet reaches 1,000 nits across its entire screen.

How tablet brightness is measured in nits

Brightness is reported in nits, also called candelas per square metre (cd/m²). The number tells you how much light the display produces under a specified test condition. Always read the words beside it: “maximum full-screen,” “sustained,” “typical,” “peak” and “HDR” describe different measurements.

Full-screen or sustained brightness

Full-screen brightness measures a large area, often the entire display, producing the stated level. Sustained brightness describes how long the tablet can maintain that output without reducing it because of heat, power limits or display protection. These figures are the most relevant for reading outdoors, working in a sunlit room or viewing a mostly white document.

Peak brightness

Peak brightness normally refers to a small, short-lived area, such as a glint on metal, a lamp in a movie or a sun reflection in an HDR game. A panel can reach a much higher peak on a small window than it can sustain across the whole screen. Do not compare a small-window HDR peak with another tablet’s full-screen figure as though they were the same test.

A concrete specification example

Apple’s current iPad Pro specification lists 1,000 nits maximum full-screen brightness and 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR content. The first figure describes broad-area output; the second describes bright HDR highlights. These are not interchangeable measurements and should not be generalized to every OLED tablet.

How refresh rate, HDR and brightness work together

These specifications answer different questions:

Specification Question it answers What it does not prove
Refresh rate How frequently the panel can update the image. That every app, game or video runs at the maximum rate.
HDR support or certification Whether the tablet can accept HDR content and, with certification, meet defined image-quality tests. That all HDR content will look dramatically brighter than SDR.
Full-screen or sustained nits How bright a broad area can remain in a specified mode. How intense a small HDR highlight can appear.
Peak HDR nits How bright a limited highlight can become under the stated HDR test. Outdoor readability across the whole screen.
OLED panel type Whether pixels emit light individually for deep blacks and fast response. That the panel is brighter than every LCD or free from every OLED trade-off.

A tablet can therefore have excellent black levels and a 120Hz mode but modest full-screen brightness. Another can be very bright in a large white window but offer weaker contrast in a dark film scene. The best choice depends on the content and lighting in which you will use it.

How to compare OLED tablets before buying

  1. Check the adaptive range. Find the minimum and maximum refresh rates, not only the maximum. Confirm whether the manufacturer describes an adaptive mode and whether your key apps support the higher rate.
  2. Identify the HDR format or certification. Look for a named HDR format and a genuine VESA DisplayHDR True Black designation when one is provided. Treat an unqualified “HDR” badge as compatibility information only.
  3. Separate peak from sustained brightness. Record whether each nit figure is full-screen, sustained, typical or peak HDR. Compare like with like.
  4. Match brightness to your room. For outdoor work or a sunny office, prioritize sustained/full-screen brightness, an effective anti-reflective treatment and readable text. For films and games in controlled lighting, peak HDR brightness, black level and contrast have greater influence on highlight impact.
  5. Check the exact model and mode. Brightness can vary by display mode, HDR state, temperature and power setting. Use the specification for the precise size and generation you intend to buy.
  6. Consider the source. A high-rate panel cannot add frames that an app or video does not provide, and HDR hardware cannot create the same result as content mastered for HDR.

Which specifications matter for different uses?

Reading, web browsing and office work

Adaptive refresh makes long pages and window movement feel smoother, while full-screen brightness and anti-reflective treatment determine whether text remains comfortable in a bright room. HDR is usually a secondary concern for documents.

Films and streaming video

Prioritize OLED’s black level, a correctly supported HDR format and sufficient peak brightness for highlights. Check that the streaming app and operating system deliver HDR; a panel specification alone cannot force SDR video into true HDR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gaming

A 120Hz-capable panel can improve motion clarity and touch response when the game renders at a matching frame rate. HDR adds impact to bright effects and dark scenes, but the game, tablet software and display mode must all support it.

Photo and video creation

Color gamut, bit depth, black level, sustained brightness and a documented HDR standard matter more than a single maximum nit number. DisplayHDR True Black 1000, added by VESA in 2024, is specifically relevant when a certified OLED display’s higher HDR luminance is important to the workflow.

Common specification mistakes

  • Assuming 120Hz is constant: Adaptive displays can move anywhere within their range, and source performance can limit the active rate.
  • Equating HDR support with HDR quality: Compatibility does not establish brightness, color accuracy or black-level performance.
  • Comparing unlike nit measurements: A 1,600-nit peak highlight is not equivalent to 1,000 nits full-screen.
  • Reading a certification name loosely: “HDR-400” is not the same as the certified “DisplayHDR 400” designation.
  • Assuming every OLED matches one flagship: The iPad Pro figures are model-specific. Other OLED tablets may use different panels, modes and test conditions.
  • Using refresh rate as a battery proxy: Battery results depend on the complete device and workload; no universal consumption figure follows from the Hz number alone.

A quick checklist for a tablet specification sheet

  • Is the refresh rate fixed or adaptive, and what are the minimum and maximum values?
  • Can the apps and games you care about provide enough frames to use the maximum rate?
  • Does the tablet name a specific HDR format or carry genuine VESA DisplayHDR True Black certification?
  • Are the brightness figures full-screen, sustained, typical or small-window peak HDR?
  • Which number matters more for your environment: sustained brightness for broad-area readability or peak brightness for HDR highlights?
  • Are the quoted figures for the exact model, display mode and region you plan to buy?

The practical verdict is simple: choose refresh rate for motion, HDR certification and black level for high-dynamic-range content, and sustained/full-screen brightness for bright-room readability. Use peak HDR brightness to judge highlight intensity, but never substitute it for an outdoor-brightness measurement.
