Older and younger customers generally want the same outcome from financial technology—fast, dependable control of their money—but differ in when they want human help, which tasks they will do digitally, and what risks they worry about. U.S. surveys show that adults 50-plus actively use online and mobile banking for routine work, while many still value branches and familiar staff. Younger adults (measured in the available evidence as ages 18–49) use digital channels too, but these age ranges do not prove that every named generation shares one fixed preference.
What the evidence actually compares
Most U.S. surveys compare broad age bands rather than named generations. Key studies use groups such as ages 18–49 and 50-plus, or adults 25-plus with a 50-plus subgroup. Those bands overlap several generations and cannot establish that a behavior was caused by belonging to a particular birth cohort. The survey results show how people in the surveyed age ranges reported using financial services, what made them uneasy, and where they wanted assistance.
The figures below come from separate surveys and should not be combined into one sample. A nationally representative 2023 fintech survey of 1,630 U.S. adults age 25-plus included 990 adults 50-plus. A separate 2023 age-friendly-banking survey covered adults 18-plus. Another online survey of 3,838 U.S. adults ran from September 9 to October 6, 2025. Interviews conducted in October 2025 involved 42 adults age 50-plus discussing interactive teller machines.
Do older people actually use mobile and online banking?
Yes. A 2023 AARP Research survey, reported in 2025, found that seven in ten adults 50-plus used some form of financial technology. Their most common activities were practical, recurring tasks rather than complex financial products.

| Applying for a loan online or in an app | Fewer than 10% | Same survey |
A separate 2025 AARP survey found that 63% of adults 50-plus used financial digital services. Among those users, 96% used an online bank, and 91% of adults 50-plus owned a smartphone. Because the fieldwork and samples differ from the 2023 study, these percentages describe that 2025 survey rather than a trend line from the earlier one.
Why task complexity changes adoption
Routine transactions feel worth digitizing
Balance checks, bill payments and transfers have a clear payoff: they can be completed quickly without travel or waiting. Interfaces that show the current balance, payment status and transfer destination plainly support this use case. Customers often want alerts, confirmation screens and an easy way to correct an error before money moves.
High-stakes decisions create a higher proof burden
Only 13% of adults 50-plus in the cited 2023 survey used financial technology to invest in securities, and fewer than 10% applied for a loan online or in an app. These figures do not show that older customers are incapable of using those tools. They indicate that complex, consequential tasks have a different adoption threshold. Customers may want clearer explanations, a person to consult, or the option to finish in a branch before committing.

Design implication
A service should not assume that a customer who checks a balance on a phone also wants every financial decision automated. Offer progressive detail: a simple first screen, plain-language explanations, visible fees and risks, and an obvious route to a trained employee.
What older customers expect from bank technology
Convenience without confusion
In AARP Research’s summary of interactive teller machine interviews, “Convenience, defined as banking that is fast and easy to access, is a top priority across age groups.” Speed matters to younger and older users alike. The difference is often whether speed comes with enough context and reassurance. A fast process that hides a fee, changes a payment date or makes recovery difficult can reduce confidence.
Security and privacy that are visible
Security is a concrete adoption requirement, not a footnote. In the 2023 survey, half of adults 50-plus worried about security and inappropriate use of personal information. Fifty-one percent cited being hacked, and 49% cited malware. Product teams should explain how sign-in, device recognition, transaction alerts and dispute handling work. Customers need a clear way to report a suspicious payment, freeze access and reach a real person.

Protection against fraud and exploitation
Age-friendly banking principles identified by AARP Public Policy Institute’s Jilenne Gunther include “Preventing financial exploitation,” “Helping those with dementia,” “Empowering financial caregivers,” and “Making the banking environment easier to access.” These principles point to features and procedures rather than a separate senior-only product. Examples include configurable transaction limits, trusted-contact processes, staff training to spot coercion, and safeguards that pause an unusual transfer while preserving the customer’s ability to authorize legitimate activity.
Accessible interfaces and service
Readable type, strong contrast, descriptive labels, predictable navigation and compatibility with assistive technologies help people with changing vision, hearing, dexterity or memory. Accessibility also means the service works through more than one channel. A customer should be able to switch from app to telephone or branch without having to repeat the entire story.
Human help when the stakes rise
Digital adoption does not eliminate the need for staff. In the 2023 age-friendly-banking survey, 26% of adults 50-plus said they visited a branch to interact with a teller or banker they knew, compared with 13% of adults ages 18–49. Twenty-four percent of adults 50-plus cited social engagement as a reason for visiting, versus 7% of the younger group. A familiar employee can explain an unfamiliar screen, help resolve a suspected scam or provide confidence during a major financial decision.

Do younger adults trust fintech apps more?
These comparisons cannot support a blanket “younger people trust fintech more” conclusion. They compare broad age bands, do not identify every named generation, and measure reported behavior and concerns rather than an experiment in trust. Younger adults may choose apps for speed and availability, while still expecting strong security, transparent pricing and rapid human support when something goes wrong.
The most defensible comparison is by task and channel. The 2023 age-friendly-banking survey found that adults 50-plus were 85% more likely than younger adults to use a physical bank or credit union for activities such as deposits or withdrawals, check cashing and checking balances. That finding describes a stronger preference for in-person channels among the older group; it does not mean younger customers reject branches or that older customers avoid digital tools.

For many customers, yes—especially for unusual, sensitive or difficult transactions. Someone may use an app to check a balance every day and still visit a branch for a large deposit, identity problem, estate matter or suspected fraud. The branch can also provide social connection and a relationship with a known employee, factors reported more often by adults 50-plus.

Interactive teller machine interviews with 42 adults age 50-plus in October 2025 highlighted connection, convenience and security as themes. An assisted machine or video teller can therefore work best as a bridge between self-service and a person, not as a reason to remove every staffed option. Clear instructions, privacy at the screen and an easy escalation path determine whether the technology feels supportive.

What financial institutions and fintech teams should build
Design around jobs, not age stereotypes
Start with the task: checking a balance, paying a bill, moving money, investing or borrowing. Measure completion, error recovery and requests for help by task and age band. Avoid labeling a feature “for seniors” or assuming that a younger customer wants a fully automated path.
Make the safe path the easy path
- Show the account, recipient, amount, date and fee before submission.
- Use plain-language warnings for unusual transfers, new payees and investment or loan commitments.
- Provide a prominent review and cancel step where the payment network allows it.
- Send an immediate confirmation and make the transaction history easy to find.
- Offer one-tap access to a trained human when the customer reports fraud, confusion or a blocked account.
Build continuity across channels
A customer who starts in an app should not have to restart at a branch. Securely carry over the case number, documents and consent choices. Conversely, a branch employee should be able to teach the digital step without pressuring the customer to abandon in-person service.
Support caregivers without removing control
Permission-based access, separate credentials, transaction notifications and clear records can help a caregiver while preserving the account holder’s authority. Safeguards should distinguish an authorized helper from an abusive third party and provide a human review route for disputes.
How customers can choose the right channel
- Use digital self-service for routine balances, bills and transfers when the device, connection and authentication are secure.
- Use phone or secure messaging when a transaction is unusual, a login is blocked or a charge needs investigation.
- Use a branch or assisted teller for high-value, legally sensitive or confusing matters, or when personal reassurance is important.
- Ask about caregiver and fraud controls before enabling shared access or sending a large first-time payment.
What these surveys do—and do not—establish
The findings are U.S.-based and come from different dates, samples and methods. The 2023 fintech study was nationally representative; the 2025 study was an online survey; and the interactive-teller findings came from qualitative interviews with 42 adults 50-plus. Percentages describe those populations at those times. They do not establish worldwide behavior, causation or a permanent divide between generations.
The practical conclusion is narrower and more useful: digital finance is already normal for many older adults, especially for routine tasks. Adoption falls as decisions become more complex or risky. Across age groups, people value convenience, while trust, privacy, accessible design and a reliable human option determine whether convenience feels safe enough to use.
