Nvidia, Broadcom, and Microsoft target different parts of AI computing. Nvidia sells a broad GPU and systems platform for model training, inference, and other accelerated workloads. Broadcom describes custom AI accelerators, the networking that connects them, and edge-inference hardware at a portfolio level. Microsoft builds Maia accelerators for its Azure cloud: Maia 200 is deployed for inference, while Maia 300 is a planned inference-first generation for 2027.
The important distinction is that an AI chip is not a complete AI system. Memory, software, networking, power, and cooling determine which models a system can run and how efficiently it runs them.
What an AI chip actually does
An AI chip is a processor designed to perform the large numbers of mathematical operations used by machine-learning models. Instead of handling only general-purpose tasks like a conventional CPU, an accelerator is optimized for operations such as matrix multiplication, vector calculations, and moving model data between compute units and memory.
“AI chip” can mean a graphics processing unit (GPU), a custom accelerator designed for one company’s workloads, or a complete accelerator system containing many chips. The processor is only one part of the deployment. High-bandwidth memory stores model weights and intermediate data; high-speed links connect accelerators; software libraries schedule operations; and data-center power and cooling keep the hardware within operating limits.

The same hardware can be used for different stages of the AI lifecycle, but the engineering priorities change. Training generally needs sustained throughput across many accelerators, large data transfers, and reliable checkpointing. Inference generally emphasizes response latency, requests per second, memory capacity, and cost per generated result.
Training and inference are different jobs
Training
During training, a model repeatedly processes examples, calculates errors, and adjusts its parameters. A large training run can span hundreds or thousands of accelerators and continue for days or weeks. The system must exchange data between chips, save checkpoints, and recover from failures without losing substantial work.
Inference
Inference is the use of a trained model to produce an answer, classification, image, recommendation, or other output. A chatbot generating a response and a vision system identifying an object are both inference workloads. Serving systems may need very low latency for interactive requests or very high throughput for batch jobs. Microsoft’s workload guidance recommends evaluating training and inference separately, and Azure lists training, distillation, fine-tuning, and inference as distinct tasks. Microsoft’s compute-path guidance and Azure’s AI infrastructure overview explain those distinctions.

Why the distinction matters when comparing chips
A chip that is excellent for training may not be the cheapest or fastest choice for serving a conversational model. Inference performance also depends on model precision, batch size, sequence length, memory bandwidth, and the networking used to connect multiple accelerators. A meaningful comparison therefore requires the same model, precision, system configuration, and measurement method. The available company materials do not provide a neutral, like-for-like benchmark across Nvidia, Broadcom, and Microsoft.
What Nvidia’s AI chips are used for
Nvidia presents its data-center GPU platform as a general-purpose foundation for both frontier-model training and inference. Its training materials describe GPUs and associated systems for building large models, while its data-center catalog associates different products and systems with generative and agentic AI, data processing, high-performance computing, analytics, scientific computing, visual computing, rendering, and video. These uses apply to different products and configurations; no single Nvidia GPU should be assumed to be equally optimized for every workload.

In training, Nvidia accelerators can execute the tensor and vector operations used to learn model parameters. Multi-GPU servers and connected clusters let organizations scale from fine-tuning a model to training a new large model. In inference, the same platform can serve language, vision, recommendation, and multimodal models, with software selecting kernels and precision formats appropriate to the model.
- Generative and agentic AI: training and serving language or multimodal models that generate text, code, images, audio, or actions.
- Scientific and technical computing: accelerating simulations, numerical analysis, and research workflows that can use massively parallel arithmetic.
- Data processing and analytics: running parallel transformations and analysis close to the data.
- Visual computing, rendering, and video: processing images and video or producing rendered output with GPU-accelerated pipelines.
- Cloud-hosted AI: accessing GPU instances instead of purchasing a server. Nvidia’s cloud page describes GPU use for training and inference and gives a Perplexity example on AWS GPU instances; that example is vendor-presented, not an independent benchmark. Nvidia’s cloud-computing page provides the context.
For the platform description and current product categories, see Nvidia’s AI-training platform page and its data-center products page.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Broadcom’s AI chips and infrastructure are used for
Broadcom describes its AI offering as a portfolio rather than a single publicly specified accelerator model. Its AI-solutions page groups the work into three areas: custom accelerators, networking and connectivity for AI infrastructure, and edge AI.
Custom accelerators
Custom silicon can be designed around the operations, memory pattern, precision, and interfaces required by a particular cloud provider or large enterprise. The goal is usually to improve efficiency for a defined workload rather than provide the broad compatibility of a general-purpose GPU. Broadcom’s page supports describing this activity at the portfolio level; it does not name a specific accelerator model or publish model specifications there.
AI networking and connectivity
Large AI clusters are limited not only by arithmetic capacity but also by how quickly chips exchange parameters, activations, and training data. Network switches, optical or electrical links, and related connectivity allow accelerators to scale across servers. Broadcom positions these infrastructure products as part of scalable, power-efficient AI clusters.

Edge inference
Edge AI runs inference near the device or location where data is produced instead of sending every input to a distant data center. Local processing can reduce response time, bandwidth use, and exposure of sensitive data. Examples include industrial inspection, cameras, vehicles, and embedded equipment, but Broadcom’s cited page does not identify particular customer deployments or edge-chip model names.
Because the public material does not provide a named Broadcom accelerator, numerical specification, or customer implementation, it is more accurate to describe Broadcom as supplying custom AI silicon, cluster connectivity, and edge-inference capabilities than to claim a specific product ranking.
What Microsoft’s Maia chips are used for
Maia 200: an Azure inference accelerator
Microsoft announced Maia 200 on January 26, 2026, as an inference accelerator designed for Azure. Microsoft said it was deployed in the US Central region, with US West 3 planned next, and identified Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Foundry as intended uses. The announcement also said Maia would serve multiple models, including OpenAI models, and that Microsoft’s Superintelligence team would use it for synthetic-data generation and reinforcement learning. Those are Microsoft-reported deployment and workload claims from that announcement.
Microsoft’s October 12, 2026 update said Maia 200 was serving production workloads including Copilot, with GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry expected to follow by the end of 2026. The update therefore describes an accelerator operating inside Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure, not a retail card that individuals install in a desktop computer.
Maia 200 specifications reported by Microsoft
| Specification | Microsoft-reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| FP4 performance | Over 10 petaFLOPS | Microsoft specification in the January 26, 2026 announcement |

Maia 300: announced for 2027
Microsoft’s October 12, 2026 announcement describes Maia 300 as an inference-first generation planned for deployment in 2027. The company says it is intended for long-context, memory-intensive, and decode-heavy workloads. Those characteristics matter for models that must retain large amounts of context or generate tokens repeatedly, but Maia 300 should be treated as a company plan rather than an already available customer product. The roadmap appears in Microsoft’s October 2026 Maia update.
How the three approaches differ
| Company | Publicly described focus | Typical role in an AI system | How the evidence is framed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nvidia | Broad GPU and data-center platform | Training, inference, and other accelerated-computing workloads | Product and platform descriptions from Nvidia |
| Broadcom | Custom accelerators, AI networking, and edge AI | Purpose-built cloud or enterprise silicon, cluster connectivity, and localized inference | Portfolio-level description; no named accelerator model in the cited page |
| Microsoft | In-house Maia accelerators for Azure | Inference for Microsoft cloud services and selected internal workloads | Microsoft announcements about deployment, specifications, and roadmap |
This table is a description of roles, not a performance league table. Nvidia’s broad platform, Broadcom’s custom-and-connectivity portfolio, and Microsoft’s Azure-specific Maia systems address different purchasing and operating decisions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to examine before choosing an accelerator
1. Define the workload
Decide whether you need pretraining, fine-tuning, distillation, batch inference, or interactive inference. Identify the model architecture, parameter count, context length, input and output formats, and target response time. A training cluster and a low-latency serving cluster may require different hardware even when they run the same model.
2. Calculate memory requirements
Model weights, activations, optimizer states, and longer context windows can consume far more memory than the parameter count alone suggests. Check available accelerator memory and bandwidth, then determine whether the model fits on one device or must be sharded across several. Microsoft’s 216 GB HBM3e figure for Maia 200 illustrates why memory capacity is a first-order specification for inference, especially with long contexts.

3. Check scale-up and scale-out networking
For multi-accelerator training, compare the links inside a server with the fabric connecting servers. Communication overhead can erase theoretical compute gains if gradients or activations move too slowly. Networking is also where a portfolio such as Broadcom’s can affect the practical performance of a cluster even when another company supplies the accelerator.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
4. Verify software compatibility
Confirm support for the frameworks, compilers, kernels, quantization formats, and orchestration tools used by your model. A theoretical throughput figure is of limited value if the required operators are unavailable or need custom engineering. Cloud access can simplify this work because the provider supplies drivers and a managed software stack, while an owned data center gives more control but places integration responsibility on the operator.
5. Budget power, cooling, and operations
Data-center accelerators draw substantial power and produce concentrated heat. Include server design, racks, networking, cooling capacity, replacement logistics, and monitoring in the decision. A chip with lower purchase cost may be more expensive to operate if it requires more devices or delivers less useful work per watt for your model.
6. Decide between cloud access and owned hardware
Cloud GPU or accelerator instances let a team rent capacity for experiments, variable demand, or short training runs. Owned infrastructure can make sense for predictable, sustained utilization and strict control over data or scheduling. Maia is presented as Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure, so access is through Microsoft’s cloud services rather than a conventional retail channel. Nvidia hardware is available through cloud providers and data-center systems; Broadcom’s custom silicon is generally associated with infrastructure designed for specific customers or platforms.

- Confusing a peak number with application speed: petaFLOPS are measured under a stated precision and workload; they do not predict every model’s latency.
- Comparing unlike precisions: FP4, FP8, FP16, and other formats trade numerical range, memory use, and speed differently.
- Ignoring the system: Memory, interconnects, software, power, and cooling can bottleneck a fast processor.
- Treating a roadmap as availability: Maia 300 is announced for 2027, while Maia 200 is the generation Microsoft reports in production.
- Assuming every product in a portfolio is equivalent: Nvidia’s products span several workloads, and Broadcom’s public description covers multiple kinds of infrastructure.
- Using vendor examples as independent tests: Company case studies explain intended use, but they are not neutral benchmarks.
Practical answers for developers and organizations
Can an individual buy Microsoft Maia?
Maia is described as an in-house Azure accelerator. The announcements discuss Microsoft cloud deployments and services, not a standalone board for consumer purchase. Developers encounter it, if offered for a particular service or region, through Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure rather than by installing the chip locally.
What does Broadcom make for AI data centers?
Broadcom’s cited AI portfolio covers custom accelerators, networking and connectivity for AI clusters, and edge-inference solutions. The public page used here does not establish a specific accelerator model, model specifications, or named customer deployment, so a more detailed product claim would require another primary source.
Is Nvidia only for training?
No. Nvidia describes its platform for both training and inference, as well as data processing, scientific computing, analytics, visual computing, rendering, and video. The exact suitability depends on the particular GPU, system, model, and software stack.
Which company has the fastest AI chip?
The available sources do not support a fair overall ranking. A valid answer would require matched tests using the same model, precision, batch size, software version, system scale, and measurement method. Without those controls, vendor-published figures should be read as specifications or demonstrations of intended use, not a universal speed contest.
