Do not start with a cleaner; start with the appliance’s care instructions. Traditional stainless steel, fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, and black stainless steel can have different surfaces, including clear protective coatings. A product that is acceptable for one finish can scratch, dull, discolor, or damage another.

As a conservative rule, avoid abrasive tools, steel wool, abrasive powders, chlorine bleach, oven cleaner, ammonia, vinegar or other acidic products, and window spray unless the exact model’s Use and Care Guide explicitly permits them. For routine cleaning that the manual allows, use warm water with a small amount of mild soap and a clean soft or microfiber cloth, then dry the panel completely.

Why the finish matters more than the word “stainless”

“Stainless steel appliance” describes the visible appearance, not one universal surface. Traditional brushed stainless steel is generally an exposed metal finish with a visible grain. Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel commonly uses a clear coat over the metal. Black stainless steel can also use a clear coat, and the coating may scratch or become dull if it is treated like bare metal.

GE Appliances says its fingerprint-resistant stainless steel has a clear coat that lets the stainless appearance show through and does not require special cleaners. Whirlpool likewise directs owners to follow finish-specific instructions. Those statements mean a cleaner labeled for stainless steel is not automatically suitable for every appliance carrying that label.

Products and tools to keep off the appliance

Abrasive pads, powders, and metal scrubbers

Do not use steel wool, scouring pads, gritty powders, abrasive creams, or abrasive cloths on the panel unless the exact manual says otherwise. Their fibers or particles can leave permanent scratches, especially when rubbed across a brushed grain or a clear coat. GE’s traditional-stainless guidance prohibits steel wool and abrasives; GE and Whirlpool also exclude abrasive cloths for covered fingerprint-resistant finishes.

Do not assume a “non-scratch” claim on a pad overrides the appliance manual. Pad materials vary, and pressure, trapped grit, or residue under the pad can still mark a surface.

Paper towels and newsprint

Paper products are not a universal safe choice. Whirlpool lists paper towels and newsprint among items that may damage the specified finishes on its care page, and GE’s fingerprint-resistant instructions exclude paper towels. Rough fibers can leave fine marks or lint, while reused paper can carry grit from another surface. A clean, soft microfiber or other nonabrasive cloth is the safer default when the manual permits it.

Bleach and chlorine-containing cleaners

Keep chlorine bleach and cleaners containing chlorine away from the finishes covered by the reviewed GE and Whirlpool instructions. Whirlpool specifically warns that chlorine bleach can damage fingerprint-resistant and black stainless surfaces; on black stainless, the clear coat may scratch or become dull. Never mix bleach with another cleaner.

Ammonia, vinegar, and other acids

Do not use ammonia, vinegar-based products, or acidic cleaners unless the exact appliance instructions explicitly approve them. Whirlpool’s finish guidance and GE’s fingerprint-resistant guidance list ammonia and vinegar or acidic products among substances to avoid.

General stainless-steel advice can conflict with this appliance-specific direction. The American Cleaning Institute discusses vinegar or ammonia for brightening some stainless surfaces and glass cleaner for stubborn fingerprints. Whirlpool also has general-interest material that describes vinegar use, while its product-help guidance prohibits vinegar-based cleaners for specified appliance finishes. That difference is a scope issue: advice for sinks or uncoated metal does not establish compatibility with a coated refrigerator, range, dishwasher, or microwave panel.

Oven cleaner

Do not use commercial oven cleaner on an appliance’s stainless exterior. GE and Whirlpool both warn against oven cleaners for the finishes covered by their guidance. Exterior panels, trim, controls, and coatings are not the same as the inside of an oven cavity.

Window and glass sprays

GE’s fingerprint-resistant instructions exclude window sprays. A glass cleaner can contain ammonia, alcohol, acids, or other ingredients that a coated finish does not tolerate. Even when a general cleaning source suggests glass cleaner for fingerprints, use it only if your model’s instructions specifically permit that formulation.

“Stainless steel” cleaner or polish without checking the label

A purpose-made stainless-steel cleaner is not automatically safe. GE says not to use stainless-steel cleaners on its fingerprint-resistant clear-coat finish, while its traditional-stainless guidance discusses a purpose-made cleaner for some needs. Whirlpool similarly limits products to those designed for traditional stainless steel and warns owners to keep polish off plastic, trim, and rubber gaskets.

Read both the cleaner’s label and the appliance manual. If either source excludes the product, do not use it. Never apply a polish to displays, painted sections, plastic caps, control surrounds, or door seals just because they touch the stainless panel.

Citrus-based products

Whirlpool includes citrus-based cleaners in the avoid list for the finishes addressed by its guidance. “Natural,” “plant-based,” or “degreasing” claims do not prove compatibility. Check the ingredients and the appliance instructions instead.

Quick decision table by finish

Finish or surface Conservative routine when the manual permits it Products and tools to avoid unless explicitly approved
Traditional brushed stainless steel Warm water with a little mild soap or detergent; clean soft or microfiber cloth; wipe in the grain direction; dry fully. Steel wool, abrasive powders or pads, abrasive cloths, bleach or chlorine, oven cleaner, ammonia, vinegar or acidic products, and any cleaner not approved by the model guide.
Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel Warm water and mild soap with a clean soft or microfiber cloth; dry to prevent streaks and water spots. Stainless-steel cleaner or polish, bleach or chlorine, vinegar or acids, ammonia, window spray, abrasives, steel wool, abrasive cloths, and paper towels.
Black stainless steel Use only the method specified for the clear-coated finish; a soft cloth and mild soapy water are common defaults where the manual allows them. Bleach or chlorine, abrasive tools, steel wool, and products that can scratch or dull the clear coat; also avoid any substance excluded by the model guide.
Plastic trim, painted parts, displays, and rubber gaskets Use the separate care method in the appliance guide, keeping products for the stainless panel away from these parts. Stainless polish, abrasive products, and any chemical not approved for that material.

How to clean safely when the manual allows a basic method

  1. Identify the finish and model. Check the model number, finish description, and current Use and Care Guide. Look for separate instructions for traditional, fingerprint-resistant, or black stainless surfaces.
  2. Remove loose grit first. If the guide permits, use a clean soft cloth to lift dust and particles. Do not drag visible grit across the panel or use a dry abrasive material.
  3. Prepare a mild solution. Use warm water with a small amount of mild soap or detergent only when the manual allows that method. Do not add bleach, ammonia, vinegar, citrus cleaner, oven cleaner, or polish.
  4. Use a clean, nonabrasive cloth. A soft microfiber cloth is a conservative choice cited in GE and Whirlpool guidance. Use a separate cloth from one used on a grimy sink or floor so trapped particles do not scratch the appliance.
  5. Follow the grain on traditional brushed stainless. Wipe evenly in the visible grain direction. For a coated finish, follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming grain-direction polishing is appropriate.
  6. Remove residue. Wipe with a second cloth dampened as directed by the manual. Avoid saturating control panels, seams, displays, vents, or door edges.
  7. Dry completely. GE advises drying fingerprint-resistant surfaces to prevent streaks and water spots. Whirlpool warns that incompletely dried water can discolor the surface. Use a clean, dry soft cloth.
  8. Inspect before repeating. If the mark remains, stop and consult the model guide for stain-specific instructions. Do not escalate to a stronger chemical or rougher pad simply because the first pass did not remove it.

What to do about common reader questions

Can vinegar be used on stainless steel appliances?

Only if the exact appliance instructions explicitly allow it. General stainless-steel or sink advice sometimes recommends vinegar, but Whirlpool’s appliance-care guidance and GE’s fingerprint-resistant guidance prohibit vinegar-based or acidic products for specified finishes. A coated appliance panel is the reason “vinegar is always safe” is unreliable advice.

Can bleach be used on a stainless steel refrigerator?

Do not use bleach or chlorine cleaner unless the refrigerator’s model guide specifically permits it. The GE and Whirlpool finish-specific guidance reviewed here warns against bleach or chlorine, including on fingerprint-resistant and black stainless surfaces.

Can paper towels be used on fingerprint-resistant stainless steel?

GE’s fingerprint-resistant instructions exclude paper towels, and Whirlpool lists paper towels and newsprint among items that may damage covered finishes. Use a clean soft or microfiber cloth instead when the manual allows routine cleaning.

Can stainless-steel cleaner be used on fingerprint-resistant appliances?

Not by default. GE specifically says not to use stainless-steel cleaners on its fingerprint-resistant clear coat. Use the cleaner only when both the product label and the exact appliance guide approve it.

How to resolve conflicting cleaning advice

When sources disagree, compare the five details that determine compatibility:

  • Actual finish: traditional, fingerprint-resistant, black stainless, or another coating.
  • Panel construction: exposed brushed metal versus a clear-coated surface.
  • Ingredients: chlorine or bleach, acids or vinegar, ammonia, solvents, fragrances, and abrasive particles.
  • Tool texture: soft microfiber versus paper, metal fibers, gritty pads, or a cloth that may hold grit.
  • Permission from both sources: the product label and the model-specific appliance guide.

If the finish is unknown, treat it as coated until you can verify otherwise and use only the mildest method the manufacturer permits. Do not transfer instructions from a sink, cookware, or a different appliance model to your exterior panel.

If a prohibited product was already used

Stop using it and do not try to counteract it with another chemical. Check the appliance guide for the approved cleanup method. If mild soapy water and a soft cloth are listed for that finish, use that method to remove residue and dry the surface; otherwise, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel for model-specific advice. Do not attempt to polish out a mark with steel wool or an abrasive compound, because that can add scratches or damage a clear coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the product container or ingredient list available when asking for help. The exact finish, cleaner ingredients, contact time, and whether the surface was rubbed with an abrasive tool can affect the appropriate response.

Bottom line for daily care

Use the appliance’s own finish-specific instructions as the authority. The safest commonly permitted routine is warm water, a little mild soap, a clean soft or microfiber cloth, and thorough drying. Keep abrasives, steel wool, bleach or chlorine, oven cleaner, ammonia, vinegar or acidic products, window spray, paper products, citrus cleaners, and unapproved stainless polish off the appliance unless the exact manual says otherwise. Fingerprint-resistant and black stainless finishes deserve particular caution because a clear coat can be harmed by products intended for traditional stainless steel.
