“Not ready reading drive X” means the computer or program could not read from the drive it addressed. X stands for a drive letter; the message alone does not tell you whether the cause is missing or poorly seated media, a drive that is no longer available, a configuration error, or a device-specific fault. Check what drive and media the prompt refers to before retrying or changing settings.
What the error means
The wording appears in older DOS-era documentation as “Not ready reading drive X (where X is any drive letter),” followed by “Abort, Retry, Fail?” The Itronix GoBook II manual, dated December 10, 2002, uses that wording for a card-socket scenario. “Not ready” describes the failed read, not a diagnosis: the same general message can arise in different hardware and software contexts.
Read the complete prompt and note the drive letter, the program that displayed it, the operating system, and the type of drive or media involved. A floppy-drive message, an application configured to use a removed card, and a CD-ROM error need different checks.

- Identify the context. Write down the exact drive letter and full message, and identify which program produced it. Do not assume that X refers to a particular kind of hardware.
- Check the expected media. If the drive uses a disk, card, or other removable media, confirm the correct item is present and fully seated. In its card-socket context, the Itronix GoBook II manual advises inserting the media fully and then retrying.
- Confirm the drive is available. Check whether the letter still points to the intended drive or destination. A program may retain a setting for removable media that has since been taken out.
- Use checks for the identified device. For a floppy drive, follow the floppy-specific checks below; for an application or optical drive, consult the documentation for that software and model.
If the letter is A or B and the device is a floppy drive
IBM Support’s troubleshooting for floppy drives lists incorrect drive identification in the F1 CMOS setup utility as one possible cause of a “Not ready reading drive A” or “Not ready reading drive B” message. It also identifies an absent diskette, a poorly seated cable, and a supervisor password among possible causes. These are floppy-drive possibilities, not a universal explanation for every drive-letter error.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Check that the drive identification in setup matches the installed floppy drive.
- Confirm that a diskette is inserted; check its condition and, if possible, test it in another drive.
- If you are comfortable checking inside the computer, verify that the floppy-drive cable is seated correctly. Consider hardware conflicts or diagnostics only if simpler checks do not resolve the problem.
IBM’s checks and possible causes are described in its floppy-drive troubleshooting guidance.
If an application refers to a removed card or drive
A drive letter can remain in an application’s settings after the removable device assigned to it is removed. HarvestMaster documents this situation for Harvest Data software on an Allegro: map data was set to a PC card that was later removed, leaving the software pointed at an unavailable destination. Its guidance is to restore the map/data drive selection in that software.

This example applies to Harvest Data on an Allegro, not to every application. If the message appears in other software, inspect that program’s own destination or data-drive setting and select a drive that is currently available. See the HarvestMaster instructions for the Allegro error.

If the message involves a CD-ROM drive
“Not ready” wording also appears in the related CDR101 error context. The Plextor UltraPlex 40X manual discusses possible disc, connection, SCSI termination, and hardware or software conflict issues for its CD-ROM setup. Those possibilities are specific to that configuration; they do not establish the cause of a generic “Not ready reading drive X” prompt. Check the manual for the exact optical drive and interface before applying device-specific advice.

What not to assume
- The drive letter alone does not identify the hardware or prove that the drive has failed.
- A media-seating fix documented for one card socket is not a universal fix for floppy, optical, or other drives.
- The prompt by itself does not justify formatting media, replacing a drive, or buying an adapter.
If the device-specific checks do not resolve the error, provide the exact message, drive letter, computer or device model, operating system, media type, and program name when seeking support. Those details are needed to narrow the cause to the relevant manual or troubleshooting path.
