“Non-System Disk or Disk Error” means the computer tried to start from a device or boot entry that did not provide a bootable operating system. The attempted device could be removable media or the internal drive. The message alone does not prove that the internal disk has failed.
What the startup message means
During startup, firmware checks devices in a boot path for an operating system. This error appears when it cannot start from the device or boot entry it tried. The wording and cause vary by computer model and generation.
For example, Dell’s OptiPlex 9010/7010 Owner’s Manual describes a legacy case: “The floppy disk in drive A does not have a bootable operating system installed on it.” That example applies to the manual’s floppy-drive context, not every modern PC. HP describes the broader situation as BIOS being unable to find a bootable operating system on a device in the computer’s boot path in its notebook startup-error guidance, which covers Windows 7 and Vista.

- Remove external boot media. Shut down the computer and remove USB storage, optical discs, memory cards, and other external media, then restart. A device without a bootable operating system can be the unintended startup target. You do not need to open the computer for this check.
- Check the boot path in BIOS/UEFI. If the error remains, use the model’s manual to find how to enter firmware setup. Confirm that the intended internal drive is listed and that the boot order or selected boot entry points to the expected system drive. Access keys and entry names vary. Avoid changing storage-controller modes or resetting firmware settings unless instructions for the exact model call for it.
- Run the manufacturer’s pre-boot drive diagnostic. If the tool is available, run it and record any failure code. Diagnostic access and steps vary by model and BIOS version; HP specifically notes this variation in its older notebook guidance.
- Protect files before attempting repairs that write to the drive. If the drive is readable, back up important files before reinstalling the operating system, formatting, or using repair steps that alter disk contents. Lenovo’s 2015 guidance for an intermittently undetected drive recommends backing up important data promptly. If the drive is unstable and the files matter, consider qualified repair or data-recovery help before further attempts.
- Consider replacement only when failure is supported by evidence. A drive that is not detected, fails a diagnostic, or reports read errors may have a hardware problem. Before buying a replacement, verify the exact computer’s compatible form factor, connector or interface, capacity limits, and other requirements. The error message itself does not identify a compatible drive.
How to interpret the results
The error disappears after removing external media
The computer may have been trying to boot from that media. If it starts normally, check that the intended system drive remains the expected boot target when the media is connected again.

The internal drive is listed and diagnostics pass
A detected drive that passes diagnostics makes a boot-selection or boot-file problem possible, but does not prove that the boot files are intact. Use recovery instructions for the exact operating system and computer model; there is no single repair command sequence established for every system.
The internal drive is missing or a diagnostic fails
Hardware failure becomes a concern, particularly if detection is intermittent or read errors appear. Prioritize backing up accessible data and seek model-specific service guidance. Lenovo’s intermittent-detection case illustrates why a drive that disappears should be treated cautiously, but it does not mean every occurrence of this startup message is a hardware failure.

Why the message is not a diagnosis
The same startup wording can result from a wrong boot target, non-bootable removable media, or a problem with the intended system drive or its boot files. A successful drive detection does not prove the boot files are healthy, just as one failed startup does not prove the disk is dead. Separate boot-path checks from hardware diagnostics before deciding on repair or replacement.
