Open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions,” Apple identifies the iPhone as unlocked for use with another carrier. If a carrier is listed, Apple says the phone is restricted to that carrier.
Find Carrier Lock in iPhone settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock and read the status.
Apple’s unlocking instructions say that “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. The iPhone User Guide also confirms that carrier-lock information appears on the About screen: Get information about your iPhone. You do not need to swap SIM cards or use a third-party checker to view this setting.
What the Carrier Lock result means
“No SIM restrictions”
The iPhone is unlocked and can be used with another carrier, subject to that carrier’s service and device compatibility. This status is the direct answer to whether the phone is carrier-unlocked.

A carrier name appears
Apple’s preowned-iPhone inspection guidance says a phone showing a carrier can be used only with that carrier. Contact the current carrier to confirm the lock and ask how to request an unlock.

The status is missing or conflicts with what you were told
Ask the current carrier to verify the lock status and whether an approved unlock has been applied. Apple says it cannot unlock an iPhone for use with another carrier; only the current carrier can. An unlock request may take a few days, so check its progress with the carrier.
What to do after the carrier unlocks the iPhone
Apple’s follow-up steps depend on how you activate the device and, if a compatibility message persists, on the iOS version.

- You have a different carrier’s physical SIM: Insert it to activate the iPhone after the carrier confirms the unlock.
- You do not have another SIM to use: Back up the iPhone, erase it, then restore it from the backup.
- iOS 14 or later still shows a SIM compatibility message: Check About for “No SIM restrictions.” If that status is missing, contact the carrier.
- iOS 13 or earlier: Ask the carrier to confirm the unlock was applied, then restore the iPhone to factory settings and restore from a backup.

Check Carrier Lock as one part of a preowned-phone inspection, not as proof that the device is otherwise suitable or free of account restrictions. Apple separately advises buyers not to purchase an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled and recommends understanding the seller’s return policy. A carrier-unlocked phone can still have other problems; this setting checks carrier restrictions only.

Using another carrier’s eSIM while traveling
An iPhone must not be carrier-locked to use another carrier’s travel eSIM. Apple describes prepaid options from local carriers and worldwide providers, but coverage, plan data and duration, and provider support vary. Check those details with the provider and consult Apple’s guide to using eSIM while traveling internationally.
