“Splitting nitrogen” means breaking the bond in an N₂ molecule, but it is not a single process for making ammonia. Nitrogen fixation is the broader goal of turning nitrogen gas into useful nitrogen compounds; some fixation routes seek to break N₂ directly, while others activate nitrogen through different reaction pathways. Laboratory demonstrations show several possibilities, but the evidence described here does not establish an easy, commercially ready replacement for Haber–Bosch.
Why is nitrogen difficult to split?
Most nitrogen in air is molecular nitrogen, N₂: two nitrogen atoms joined by a strong triple bond, written N≡N. That bond makes nitrogen unusually reluctant to react. A process has to activate the molecule—by supplying energy and providing a viable reaction pathway—before its atoms can be incorporated into other compounds.
This is a central challenge in ammonia production as well as in alternative nitrogen chemistry. Haber–Bosch, the conventional industrial route described by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), reacts atmospheric nitrogen with hydrogen over a metal catalyst at high temperature and pressure. Hydrogen sourcing is also part of the wider question of how ammonia might be made with renewable energy. The difficulty of getting nitrogen to react is not just a matter of finding a catalyst: the reaction pathway and the source of energy both matter.

Does nitrogen fixation always mean breaking the N₂ bond?
No. Nitrogen fixation means converting N₂ into nitrogen-containing products, including ammonia. N₂ cleavage or splitting specifically means breaking the bond between the two nitrogen atoms. Direct cleavage is one possible route within the broader field of nitrogen fixation, not a synonym for every fixation process.

Some molecular chemistry studies direct cleavage and produce metal-bound nitride complexes. Other research aims for ammonia through plasma or photo-electrochemical processes. A separate electrocatalytic strategy explores oxidizing nitrogen toward nitrous oxide and nitrate, then reducing nitrate toward ammonia. That route does not begin by making free nitrogen atoms through N₂ cleavage.
What approaches have researchers explored?
The routes below pursue different intermediates and products, so their reported results cannot be treated as a head-to-head ranking. In particular, ammonia, nitrate or other NOx products, and metal-bound nitride complexes are distinct outcomes.

|---|---|---|---|
| Plasmon-assisted photocatalysis | Uses plasmonic aluminium nanostructures and semiconductor photoelectrodes to drive ammonia formation. | A Gebert Rüf Stiftung-funded project page reports a demonstration at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. It does not state a comparable efficiency figure. | A proof of concept under those conditions; the project page says efficiency was lower than anticipated and the approach was not ready for immediate industrial translation. |
| Plasma combined with photo-electrochemical water splitting | Combines nitrogen plasma with photo-electrochemical water splitting to produce ammonia. | Lamichhane et al. (2020) report six times as much ammonia as from nitrogen plasma alone. They report ammonia production efficiency reaching up to 72% after adding a proton-exchange membrane to limit oxygen diffusion into the plasma and reducing the distance between the plasma electrode and reaction site. | A specific laboratory result for that setup. The paper notes that NOx co-production and background contamination affect measured ammonia production and Faradaic efficiency. |
| Electrocatalytic nitrogen oxidation toward nitrate | Explores oxidation toward nitrous oxide and nitrate, followed by nitrate reduction toward ammonia, rather than starting with direct N₂ cleavage. | An LLNL feature published in December 2024 describes computational and laboratory work. Its thermodynamic accounting found that starting with oxidation could require less overall energy input despite the longer reaction sequence; no commercial-process energy figure is stated. | A study-specific thermodynamic finding and research direction, not proof of lower energy use in a full commercial process. |

A 2022 study listed by the University of Antwerp explores small-scale ammonia synthesis using plasma-enabled nitrogen oxidation and catalytic reduction of adsorbed NOx. | The university overview describes research interests and the study direction; comparable operating conditions and performance values are not stated there. | Evidence of active research, not evidence of industrial deployment. |
| Molecular N₂ cleavage | Electrochemical cleavage in a rhenium pincer complex platform yields well-defined terminal nitride complexes. | A 2020 peer-reviewed paper reports the molecular chemistry; bulk-production conditions or a comparable ammonia-production figure are not stated. | A way to study bond activation and molecular mechanisms, not a demonstrated bulk ammonia process. |
What do the plasma study’s sixfold and 72% figures mean?
In the 2020 study by Lamichhane and colleagues, the combined plasma and photo-electrochemical process produced six times as much ammonia as nitrogen plasma alone in the authors’ comparison. The paper also reports ammonia production efficiency of up to 72% after two apparatus changes: a proton-exchange membrane limited oxygen diffusion from water splitting into the plasma, and the plasma electrode was brought closer to the reaction site.
Those numbers belong to that study and setup. The 72% figure is the paper’s ammonia production efficiency metric; it should not be relabeled as general energy efficiency or compared directly with percentages from unrelated studies without checking definitions and measurement methods. The authors also note that NOx produced alongside ammonia and background contamination affect measured ammonia production and Faradaic efficiency.

Can nitrogen be split at room temperature?
A Gebert Rüf Stiftung project page reports a plasmon-assisted ammonia demonstration at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. That establishes that a research demonstration was conducted under those conditions; it does not establish an efficient process at industrial scale. The same project page says the approach was less efficient than anticipated and not ready for immediate industrial translation.
“Room temperature” also does not mean “without energy input.” The project involved plasmonic nanostructures and semiconductor photoelectrodes to drive the chemistry. The available project description does not provide a common energy-consumption or cost measure that would allow its performance to be compared fairly with other routes.

Are any of these methods ready to replace Haber–Bosch?
The cited work supports research activity and laboratory demonstrations, not a field-wide claim that an alternative is commercially ready. The plasmon-assisted project explicitly identifies insufficient efficiency for immediate industrial translation. The molecular cleavage paper concerns well-defined complexes, while the LLNL nitrate route is described as computational and laboratory work. The University of Antwerp overview presents plasma conversion as a research direction.
A fair comparison would need consistent information on energy consumption, greenhouse-gas emissions, cost, production scale, operating lifetime, and readiness. The sources described here do not provide a harmonized dataset for those measures. A single efficiency percentage or thermodynamic estimate cannot by itself show that a route is the most sustainable option or can supply fertilizer at industrial scale.

What “splitting nitrogen” tells you—and what it doesn’t
The phrase points to a genuine chemical challenge: activating or cleaving the strong N≡N bond. But it does not identify one technology, one product, or one maturity level. In research descriptions, check what the route actually does—directly cleaves N₂, activates it in a plasma or photo-electrochemical system, or oxidizes it toward nitrate—and whether the result is ammonia, another nitrogen compound, or a molecular nitride complex.
As an LLNL feature published in December 2024 quotes Davis, a researcher on the work: “It’s incredibly hard for scientists to force nitrogen to do what we want it to do experimentally.”
