Nightjars are nocturnal insectivores that catch moths, flies, beetles and other flying invertebrates in mid-air. Because feeding happens on the wing, they need more than a nesting spot: they require insect-rich clearings, edges, grassland or other open habitat close enough to reach from breeding areas. Evidence from British European nightjars shows that a connected mosaic of young plantation, heathland, woodland edges and grazed grassland can matter more than any single habitat type.

What do nightjars eat?

Nightjars eat invertebrates, with moths, flies and beetles documented among the prey of the European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus). The species profile from the Woodland Trust describes a bird that feeds at night and catches food on the wing. That broad description is more reliable than claims about a fixed menu: nightjar species live across different regions and the available insects change with season, weather and habitat.

The old name “goatsucker” has sometimes encouraged a myth that nightjars drink milk from goats. They do not. The name is historical folklore; their food is insects and other small invertebrates.

A flexible insect diet

Moths are a prominent part of the European nightjar’s reported diet, but flies and beetles are also important prey groups. The available evidence does not establish one universal percentage for each insect type, nor does it justify naming a single insect as the staple food of every nightjar. A nightjar’s feeding opportunities depend on what flies over its hunting grounds on a given night.

This flexibility explains why habitat quality is tied to insect production. A site with suitable nesting cover but few flying insects cannot support the birds through the breeding season. Conversely, a productive meadow or clearing may be valuable even when it is not used for nesting.

How do nightjars catch insects?

Nightjars are aerial hunters. They leave a perch or concealed daytime roost, fly through the darkness and seize insects with a wide, gaping mouth. Their flight is notably quiet, helping them approach prey without the wing noise produced by many other birds. The Woodland Trust’s account summarizes this as “catching it on the wing”; in practical terms, the bird intercepts insects in flight rather than searching leaves or soil for most of its food.

Why a wide mouth and silent flight matter

  • A wide gape: gives the bird a broad target area when it passes through a cloud of small insects.
  • Nocturnal activity: places feeding at the time when many moths and other flying invertebrates are active.
  • Quiet flight: allows repeated passes through feeding areas without the conspicuous wing noise associated with larger, faster-winged birds.
  • Open airspace: lets the bird maneuver and detect prey; dense vegetation is useful for cover in some places but limits aerial hunting directly above it.

These traits do not mean every nightjar hunts in exactly the same way. “Nightjar” covers several species with different ranges and local conditions. The detailed movement figures below concern European nightjars in British breeding landscapes, chiefly in England, and should not be treated as measurements for the whole family.

Where do nightjars hunt?

Nightjars often hunt where open airspace and insect abundance meet. For European nightjars in Britain, breeding landscapes include heathland and young conifer plantations. Tracking has also recorded use of newly planted forest and grazed grassland. Woodland edges, clearings, glades, bare sand or heath patches can provide the combination of cover, warm ground and flying insects that aerial feeding requires.

Breeding habitat is not the same as feeding habitat

A nest site and a feeding site can be different places. The bird may shelter or breed in a relatively open patch within a forest landscape, then fly to grassland, a clearing or another edge to feed. What matters is the accessibility of those places and the prey they contain. Managing only the patch where a nest is found can therefore miss a large part of the habitat a pair uses.

Landscape element How it can serve a European nightjar Evidence or qualification
Heathland Breeding landscape with open ground and insect-rich edges Identified as a British breeding habitat; local condition varies
Young conifer plantation Important component of territories while trees are still relatively open Thetford Forest tracking found 5–10-year-old plantations important in all territories studied
Newly planted forest Additional open or early-growth foraging and breeding structure Used by tracked birds in the Thetford Forest study
Grazed grassland Open feeding area that can supply flying insects Used by tracked birds; not a universal requirement for every population
Clearings, glades and woodland edges Transition zones with open flight paths and varied insect habitat BTO habitat guidance recommends retaining varied growth stages and these structural features

Thetford Forest: a measured example

In a British Trust for Ornithology summary of a Thetford Forest study by Sharps and colleagues, 31 European nightjars were followed with very-high-frequency tracking during 2009 and 2010. The birds used several habitat types within their territories. The reported mean maximum distance between breeding and feeding locations was 747 metres per night.

That 747-metre figure is a site-specific average from those tracked birds, not a rule that every nightjar travels that distance each night. Weather, prey distribution, breeding stage and landscape layout can all change the route. Later GPS tracking summarized by BTO indicated rapid flights to feeding locations that often exceeded 3 kilometres, with some feeding areas revisited on subsequent nights. The two measurements come from different tracking work and methods, so they should not be combined into a single universal travel range.

What habitat do nightjars need?

The most useful answer is a connected habitat mosaic. European nightjars need places to breed, places where insects are available in flight, and routes between them. In Britain, that can mean heathland or early-stage plantation alongside grassland, scrub, open rides and woodland edges.

Structure across a forest landscape

BTO guidance emphasizes maintaining varied growth stages rather than allowing an entire forest to become uniform. Clearings and glades create open airspace; edges increase the amount of transition habitat; heath or bare-sand patches preserve the open conditions associated with breeding sites. Young plantations can be valuable during their open early years, but their suitability changes as canopy closes, so a landscape needs a continuing sequence of age classes and openings.

Grassland and semi-natural habitat outside the forest

Tracking evidence summarized by BTO shows that nightjars forage beyond woodland, including in grassland and other semi-natural habitats and, in some cases, farmland. This does not make every field suitable. Pesticide use, vegetation height, grazing patterns, shelter and insect abundance differ greatly among fields. The broader lesson is that a forest boundary is not the boundary of the bird’s habitat.

Connectivity is a feeding requirement

Because a nightjar can commute between a breeding patch and a feeding area, isolated habitat fragments may be less useful than a network of nearby patches. A management plan should map the wider landscape: nest areas, open hunting grounds, edge habitat, roosting cover and the gaps between them. The appropriate distance depends on the species and site, but the Thetford and GPS findings demonstrate that feeding habitat can lie hundreds of metres or several kilometres from a breeding location.

How migration expands the habitat problem

Habitat needs continue after the breeding season. BTO summaries of GPS tracking report that western European nightjars cross the Mediterranean, Sahara and equatorial rainforest relatively quickly, then slow down near barriers and search more intensively where mixed habitat and prey hotspots occur.

The tracked birds made around nine stops in both spring and autumn, with individual stopovers lasting from one to 27 days. These are results from the tracking work described by BTO, not a fixed itinerary for all nightjar populations.

Wintering areas

For the tagged western European birds, the main wintering region was scrub-dominated grassland south of the equatorial rainforest, primarily in the southern Democratic Republic of Congo. The tracking project describes these winter sites as occupied from November through March. This finding reinforces the need to protect habitat across the annual cycle: a well-managed British breeding site cannot compensate for severe losses on migration or in wintering areas.

How habitat change affects feeding

BTO identifies historical loss of heathland to agriculture, construction and afforestation as a contributor to the European nightjar’s decline in Britain. Restoration and creation of breeding habitat remain important, but restoration should include the feeding landscape rather than only a nest patch.

  • Retain a shifting mosaic: plan for young plantations, older stands, rides, clearings and heath or bare-sand patches at the landscape scale.
  • Protect open edges: avoid managing every boundary as a hard line between forest and field; gradual and varied edges can offer flight space and insect habitat.
  • Include grassland: where nightjars use grazed or semi-natural grassland, keep those areas connected to breeding sites and manage them for insect-rich conditions.
  • Plan for succession: a clearing that closes over may cease to provide the same hunting opportunity, so new openings or early-growth areas need to be created over time.
  • Use landscape-scale assessments: survey feeding areas beyond the property or forest compartment where birds are first detected.

Disturbance and artificial light

BTO discusses disturbance and light pollution as possible influences on nightjars, while noting that further research is needed. It is therefore safer to treat dark, quiet feeding areas as a sensible precaution than to claim a single universal light threshold or disturbance distance. Seasonal access controls, shielding of unnecessary lights and avoidance of repeated activity near known roosts can reduce pressure without assuming that every site responds identically.

How to interpret a nightjar sighting

A nightjar seen over a clearing is evidence of a feeding opportunity, not proof that the bird nests there. Conversely, a bird recorded in a young plantation may fly elsewhere to feed. Surveyors and land managers should record the surrounding land uses, open routes, grassland and edge habitats rather than mapping only the exact point of a call or flight.

For observers, the most useful approach is to watch from a distance, avoid shining lights toward the bird and follow local access guidance. Nightjars are active when many other visitors are not, so minimizing noise and repeated visits helps preserve the conditions the birds use.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • It supports an insectivorous diet centered on moths, flies, beetles and other flying invertebrates for the European nightjar.
  • It supports aerial, nocturnal hunting with a wide mouth and quiet flight.
  • It shows that British European nightjars use more than one habitat type and may travel from breeding sites to feeding areas.
  • It does not establish one diet percentage, one required habitat type or one nightly travel distance for every nightjar species.
  • It does not prove that all nightjars use farmland, grassland or plantations in the same way; those records are tied to particular studies and landscapes.
