If an NFL game is “blacked out” for you, it usually means the game is unavailable on that particular service in your location—not that the broadcast has vanished everywhere. NFL rules divide games into local games, available in your television market, and out-of-market games, outside that market. The rights for each game, your location, the package you bought and the device you are using determine what you can watch.
That is why a Sunday afternoon matchup may appear on a local channel but not in NFL Sunday Ticket, while an out-of-market matchup may be included in Sunday Ticket but absent from NFL+. Use the NFL’s location-based schedule or ZIP-code lookup for the specific address and game; a general “blackout” explanation cannot identify the correct service for every household.
What an NFL blackout means now
In everyday conversation, viewers call any unavailable NFL stream a “blackout.” The more precise description is unavailable on this service in this location. A provider may be unable to show a game because another broadcaster owns the rights in your market, because your package covers a different class of games, or because the service limits that game to certain devices.
Local games are defined by your television market
NFL Support describes a local game as an in-market game available on television in the viewer’s local market. The market is tied to your location, not simply to the team you support. If you live inside a team’s designated broadcast region, that game is treated as local even when you subscribe to an out-of-market package.

Out-of-market games are outside that region
An out-of-market game is outside the designated broadcast region for your address. Sunday Ticket is designed for eligible out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games. “Out of market” does not mean every game you cannot see on a local channel; it is a rights category that applies to a particular game, location and distribution package.
A blackout on one service is not necessarily a universal blackout
A game can be unavailable in one app while available through the local network, a national broadcaster or another authorized package. The word “blackout” therefore describes the restriction you encounter, not proof that the NFL removed the game from all legal broadcasts.
How location restrictions are applied
Three decisions usually determine what appears on your screen: where you are, who owns the rights in that area and whether your platform or device is eligible.

The same matchup can be local for one household and out of market for another. NFL location-based listings and the support ZIP-code lookup are intended to identify the market for the address being used. Schedules and regional assignments can change by season and by game, so an old channel guide is not a reliable substitute.
2. Rights agreements assign the game to a provider
Once a market is identified, broadcast agreements determine which network, local station or subscription service may show the game there. A package that carries distant Sunday afternoon games may deliberately omit a game that is being shown locally. Conversely, a local television service does not automatically provide every game played elsewhere.

3. Platform and device rules can narrow availability
NFL subscription terms, updated September 4, 2026, state that availability can vary by geographic location, viewing platform and device, and can be affected by broadcast policy and local or geographic blackouts. The terms do not specify one location-detection method that applies universally to every service and device. Do not assume that changing an app, browser or connected-TV setting will change the rights attached to your address.
Why today’s restriction is different from the old sellout-blackout shorthand
Older explanations often say that an NFL game is blacked out locally whenever the stadium fails to sell enough tickets. That shorthand is misleading for current streaming decisions. The Federal Register’s March 4, 2026 description of the former FCC sports blackout rule explains that the rule addressed cable systems importing a distant station’s signal when a local game had been blacked out for insufficient ticket sales. It concerned retransmission of a local broadcast signal, not the complete set of subscription rights now shown in apps and packages.

Modern service terms separately describe geographic, platform, device and broadcast-policy restrictions. A game being blocked in your Sunday Ticket or NFL+ account is therefore not evidence that the venue missed a ticket-sales threshold. The reviewed official material does not establish a single authoritative date for the end of every historical ticket-sales blackout policy, so a precise end date should not be inferred from the current subscription rules.
Which viewing route fits your situation?
| What you want to watch | Route identified in NFL guidance | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A local game in your market | The local network or service shown in the market listing | Local status is address-specific; check the game and ZIP code. |
| An eligible out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season game | NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV | It covers that out-of-market Sunday afternoon category, not every NFL game. |
| An eligible local or primetime game on a mobile device | NFL+ | Live viewing is on a phone or tablet, subject to rights and device limits. |
| Games outside the United States | NFL Game Pass International through DAZN, where offered | Country availability and terms differ; verify the current local offer. |
| The channel for one specific matchup | NFL Ways to Watch and local listings | Enter or confirm your location because assignments are market-dependent. |
How to check a specific game before kickoff
Follow this process instead of relying on a generic blackout label.
- Open the NFL’s Ways to Watch schedule. Find the matchup and use the location-based listing for the season and week in question.
- Enter the viewing ZIP code when prompted. The result should identify the local market and the services or channels assigned to that address.
- Separate local, national and out-of-market entries. A local listing may take priority over an out-of-market subscription. A nationally distributed game may be carried by a different broadcaster than a Sunday afternoon regional game.
- Check the package’s exact scope. Confirm that the game is an eligible Sunday afternoon regular-season out-of-market game for Sunday Ticket, or an eligible local or primetime game for NFL+.
- Confirm the device rule. NFL+ mobile viewing is generally limited to a phone or tablet for the live local and primetime categories described by NFL Support. A connected television or web browser may not qualify for the same entitlement.
- Compare the listing with the provider’s schedule. If the NFL listing and the service disagree, use the service’s current channel or game guide and check whether the account is being used in the same location you entered.
Why Sunday Ticket may not show your team’s game
Sunday Ticket is not an all-access pass to every NFL broadcast. YouTube Help describes it as the route for out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games. That scope creates several common surprises.

Your team is local
If the game is assigned to your local television market, it may be withheld from Sunday Ticket even though you can watch it through the local broadcaster. The package is intended to provide games outside your market, not duplicate the local feed.

The game is nationally distributed
National games have their own distribution arrangements. A nationally carried matchup can therefore be absent from Sunday Ticket even when the teams are outside your local market.
The matchup is outside Sunday Ticket’s category
The package is tied to out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games. It should not be described as covering every preseason, postseason, primetime or other nationally distributed game. Check the current listing for that week rather than assuming that a team’s entire schedule is included.
What NFL+ does—and does not—provide
NFL+ has a narrower live scope. NFL guidance says it includes eligible live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on a phone or tablet. NFL Support specifically states that live out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season games are not available live on NFL+ and require Sunday Ticket.
When NFL+ can be appropriate
- You need an eligible local game live on a supported phone or tablet.
- You need an eligible primetime regular-season or postseason game on a mobile device.
- You have checked the game’s rights and your location rather than assuming that an NFL+ subscription overrides local distribution.
When NFL+ will not solve the problem
If the missing broadcast is an out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season game, NFL+ is not the live solution identified by NFL Support. Look for the Sunday Ticket listing instead. If a game is unavailable because of a device restriction, changing to another NFL+ plan does not necessarily change the supported-device rule.

International viewing has separate rules
For viewers outside the United States, NFL guidance points to NFL Game Pass International through DAZN. The service, available games and terms vary by country. A U.S. local-market explanation should not be applied automatically to an international account, and an international product should not be recommended without checking the current offer in the viewer’s country.
Troubleshooting a game that should be available
The listing says local, but the app is blocked
- Recheck the ZIP code and the market shown by the NFL schedule.
- Confirm that the app or service account is being used in the same location as the listing.
- Look for the local channel identified in the market guide; a subscription package may intentionally omit that local feed.
- Verify that the device you selected is eligible for the game category. NFL terms allow availability to vary by platform and device.
The listing says Sunday Ticket, but the game is missing
- Make sure it is an eligible out-of-market Sunday afternoon regular-season game.
- Check whether the game has been designated for national distribution or is local to your market.
- Review the current week’s schedule rather than a saved team schedule, since regional assignments can change.
The service shows a location error
Do not assume that a location error can be solved by spoofing your location. The reviewed NFL sources do not endorse VPNs or other methods to bypass provider restrictions. Use the provider’s supported location and device settings, and contact the service if the address in your account does not match your actual viewing location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an antenna help with a local blackout?
An indoor over-the-air antenna can be a practical, optional way to receive a local broadcast channel when that channel is available in your area. It is not a workaround for territorial rights. Reception depends on your distance from the station, building construction, antenna placement and local signal conditions, and the NFL sources do not guarantee reception or endorse a particular antenna. First confirm that the local listing assigns the game to an over-the-air station; then treat an antenna as a reception accessory, not a way to obtain an out-of-market game.
Why availability changes from season to season
Broadcast contracts, regional assignments, package terms and supported devices are time-sensitive. NFL subscription terms and the game schedule can change even when the teams and kickoff time look familiar. The safest habit is to check the NFL Ways to Watch listing for the specific game and address, then read the current service terms before subscribing or troubleshooting.
Practical examples
You live in a team’s home market
The team’s Sunday afternoon game appears on the local station, but Sunday Ticket does not list it. That is consistent with the package’s out-of-market scope: the local broadcast has priority for your address.

You live outside both teams’ markets
The matchup is an eligible Sunday afternoon regional game and the ZIP-code lookup shows it as out of market. Sunday Ticket is the relevant route. NFL+ does not provide that game live under the out-of-market Sunday afternoon rule.
You want a primetime game on a tablet
If the game is an eligible local or primetime NFL+ broadcast, a phone or tablet is the device category identified by NFL Support. The fact that another game is blocked on a television does not change the rights or device conditions for this one.
You are watching from another country
Use the international guidance for your country and verify the current DAZN offer. U.S. market labels and Sunday Ticket assumptions may not apply.
The short answer to “Why is the NFL game blacked out in my area?”
Because the game’s rights are assigned by location, and the service you are using may not be allowed to show that game there—or on your device. Check the NFL location-based schedule and ZIP-code lookup, identify whether the game is local, nationally distributed or an eligible out-of-market Sunday afternoon game, and then use the route that matches that category. A service restriction is not automatically a stadium sellout blackout, and no single package carries every NFL game.
