Neanderthal hunting was not simply a matter of chasing animals with crude weapons. Evidence for carefully made spears, close-range attacks on dangerous prey, coordinated positioning and survival after severe injuries points to practical intelligence and strong social interdependence. Archaeology supports planning, technical learning, communication and care within groups, but it cannot produce an IQ score or recover every social role.
What hunting behavior can—and cannot—tell us about Neanderthal intelligence
Archaeologists infer cognition from actions that leave physical traces. A weapon has to be conceived, made, carried, used and repaired. A large animal has to be located, approached and brought down. Those sequences require more than a single reflex: they involve anticipating problems, choosing among options and adjusting behavior to a particular landscape and animal.
The most defensible description is practical or ecological intelligence. Neanderthals repeatedly solved real problems involving prey behavior, terrain, raw materials and bodily risk. That is evidence of planning and learning. It is not a numerical measure of general intelligence, and it does not prove that Neanderthals matched modern humans in every cognitive domain. Archaeology cannot directly measure IQ, vocabulary, language complexity or private thoughts.

Direct observations versus behavioral inferences
- Direct evidence: wooden spears, stone-tipped or hafted tools, impact damage on animal bones, perforations, and healed human injuries.
- Strong inferences: advance planning, repeated technical teaching, communication and cooperation when a tactic would be difficult for one person to perform alone.
- Unresolved questions: the exact words hunters used, the size of a hunting party, the identity of individual roles and whether a particular injury happened during a hunt.
Keeping those categories separate prevents two opposite errors: reducing Neanderthal behavior to instinct, or treating every sophisticated action as proof of a fully reconstructed modern-style society.

What the archaeological sites show
| Evidence | Date and place | What was observed | What it supports | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fallow deer at Neumark-Nord | Deposits about 120,000 years old, Germany | Perforations in two deer are consistent with impacts from spears delivered at close range. | Hunters came within dangerous distance and likely coordinated timing and position. The 2018 Nature Ecology & Evolution study says such confrontational hunting requires close cooperation. | The lesions identify a hunting method, not the exact number of hunters or their spoken signals. |
| Schöningen hunting spears | Revised dating around 200,000 years ago | Purpose-built wooden spears are associated with a period of intensified cooperative behavior in the 2025 Journal of Human Evolution record. | Wood selection, shaping and weapon design were part of a planned hunting system rather than an improvised act. | The chronology does not by itself reveal a complete social organization or a universal Neanderthal tactic. |
| Shanidar scapula perforation | Shanidar, with the injury discussed in a 2026 Scientific Reports study | The shape of a perforation is consistent with a wooden-spear injury. | Wooden weapons could cause severe trauma and may have been involved in encounters between people and prey. | The study cannot determine whether the event was interpersonal violence or a hunting accident. |
| Healed severe injuries and illness | Multiple Neanderthal sites reviewed in 2018 | Some individuals survived trauma or disease that would have limited mobility or independent foraging. | Other people probably supplied food, protection, transport or nursing. Healthcare is linked in the review to cooperative hunting, food sharing and parenting. | Survival demonstrates assistance, but not the exact task division or emotional relationship involved. |
How close did Neanderthals get to prey?
The Neumark-Nord deer provide unusually direct evidence. Their perforations match the mechanics of a spear entering from close range, rather than a weapon being launched from a safe distance. A hunter using a thrusting spear had to enter the animal’s striking zone, manage the animal’s movement and withdraw without being trampled or gored.
Close approach changes the entire problem. Hunters must predict where the animal will turn, keep escape routes open, and decide who distracts, blocks or delivers the final thrust. Terrain can be used to restrict movement: a bank, narrow passage, shallow water or dense vegetation may reduce the animal’s options. Those details are not preserved as a written plan, but the wound location and weapon mechanics make a close, controlled encounter more plausible than a casual attack.
Thrusting, throwing and mixed tactics
A spear can be used in more than one way. A thrusting weapon prioritizes reach, bracing and a controlled approach. A thrown spear increases distance but requires a clear line, suitable balance and an accurate release. Archaeological evidence does not justify assigning one delivery method to every Neanderthal site. The safest comparison uses several variables at once:

| Comparison axis | What changes for hunters | What the evidence can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon delivery | Thrusting demands close positioning; throwing demands aim, space and a recoverable weapon. | Neumark-Nord supports close-range impact; it does not establish how often Neanderthals threw spears elsewhere. |
| Prey size and strength | Larger animals increase the force of a mistake and may require several simultaneous attacks. | Deer injuries show a dangerous encounter, but not a universal prey preference. |
| Terrain | Open ground permits movement; confined or uneven ground can limit prey and protect hunters. | Site evidence must be interpreted with its local landscape, not generalized across all regions. |
| Distance and visibility | Short visibility favors signals and prearranged positions; long sightlines may allow a more separated approach. | No authoritative hunting-party size or standard signaling system is known. |
| Coordination | More simultaneous roles can reduce individual exposure but increase the need for timing. | The close-range deer evidence makes cooperation a strong inference, not a recorded roster of roles. |
Did Neanderthals hunt together?
The strongest answer is yes for at least some hunts, places and periods, although the evidence does not establish a single routine used by every Neanderthal community. The 2018 interpretation of the Neumark-Nord deer is explicit: “Such confrontational ways of hunting require close cooperation between participants.” A person standing within striking distance of a deer is safer and more effective when another hunter helps drive, distract or block the animal.
Cooperation does not necessarily mean a large organized battue. A small pair could coordinate a controlled approach, while a larger group might surround or channel animals. The archaeological record contains no universally accepted number for a hunting party. Any claim that Neanderthal hunts always involved a particular count goes beyond the evidence.
What “cooperation” could have involved
- Sharing information about where animals were moving and when to approach.
- Assigning temporary positions, such as driver, blocker, lookout or spear carrier.
- Synchronizing movement so one hunter did not expose another to a sudden charge.
- Recovering weapons and helping an injured participant leave the danger zone.
- Dividing and transporting meat after the kill.
These are functional possibilities, not labels for permanent social classes. Roles may have changed with age, injury, experience, season and local terrain.

What spear technology reveals about learning and social transmission
Wooden spears are perishable, so surviving examples represent only a fraction of what was made. Producing a dependable weapon still required selecting a suitable branch or trunk, removing unwanted material, shaping a point, balancing the shaft and maintaining it after use. Where stone points or hafts were involved, knapping, adhesive preparation and attachment added further steps.

A novice can watch how an experienced maker selects straight-grained wood, how much material is removed, or how a point is reinforced. A damaged spear can be repaired rather than discarded. Consistent design choices across artifacts suggest that useful procedures were remembered and taught, even though no teaching scene survives.
The revised dating of the Schöningen spears to around 200,000 years ago matters because it places sophisticated wooden hunting weapons deep in the Pleistocene. Their association with intensified cooperative behavior connects technical planning with social planning: a weapon works best when the people using it understand both its physical limits and one another’s actions.

Why Neanderthal injuries matter—and why they are easy to misread
Neanderthal skeletons contain substantial trauma, but an injury is not automatically a hunting injury. Reviews identify several possible causes, including interpersonal violence, accidents and other physically demanding activities. A broken or punctured bone can show that a person experienced danger; it rarely identifies the exact event without additional context.
The Shanidar scapula is a useful example of appropriate caution. Its perforation has morphology consistent with a wooden-spear wound, yet the 2026 study cannot decide whether the spear was used in a hunting accident or in violence between people. Presenting it as proof of either scenario would overstate what the bone can tell us.
At the same time, repeated exposure to close-range prey would make injury a predictable cost of an effective subsistence strategy. A tactic can be intelligent and still be hazardous. The relevant question is not whether Neanderthals avoided all risk, but whether the expected nutritional return justified controlled risk under local conditions.

Did Neanderthals care for injured group members?
Healthcare evidence addresses the social consequences of hunting risk. When an individual survives severe trauma or illness that would have made independent hunting, walking or gathering difficult, someone must have helped that person obtain calories, shelter or physical protection. The person may also have needed assistance with movement, wound care or keeping warm.
A 2018 review in Quaternary Science Reviews treats survival from serious injury and disease as evidence of care and places that care alongside collaborative hunting, food sharing and parenting. This does not prove a modern hospital-like system. It does show that at least some groups tolerated a period in which a sick or injured member contributed less to immediate food acquisition.
What care implies about social life
- Food sharing: hunters or gatherers had to allocate part of a meal to someone unable to participate fully.
- Protection: an injured person needed a safe place near the group, especially in a landscape with predators or hostile neighboring groups.
- Knowledge: recognizing wounds, infection or disability and responding effectively requires learned practical knowledge.
- Long-term relationships: care is easier to sustain when people maintain durable bonds that extend beyond one successful hunt.
- Parenting and reciprocity: the same network that supports children can support adults during temporary incapacity, although the exact exchange cannot be reconstructed.
Care should not be romanticized as proof that every Neanderthal group was uniformly peaceful or egalitarian. The evidence supports assistance in particular cases, while leaving the distribution of authority, conflict and obligation unresolved.

How much can these tactics tell us about Neanderthal social roles?
Hunting creates complementary tasks, but complementary tasks are not the same as fixed social ranks. One person may have been more experienced at tracking, another at woodworking, another at reading terrain. A person with a healed injury may have shifted to toolmaking, processing or childcare while recovering. Seasonal demands could also change who hunted and who stayed near a residential area.
Archaeology can identify the demands of a task better than the identity of the person who performed it. A spear’s design reveals constraints on use; it does not reveal whether age, sex or status determined who carried it. Claims about universal gender divisions or rigid hierarchies therefore require evidence that is not established by the hunting traces alone.
A disciplined way to interpret claims about Neanderthal intelligence
- Start with the physical trace. Ask whether the evidence is a weapon, an impact mark, a healed injury or a broader association.
- Attach the date and location. Neumark-Nord at about 120,000 years and Schöningen at around 200,000 years are not interchangeable examples.
- Identify the mechanical requirement. Determine whether the trace implies close approach, throwing, blocking, repeated manufacture or another specific action.
- Separate observation from inference. “A deer bone was perforated” is direct; “several hunters coordinated” is an interpretation supported by the danger and mechanics of the encounter.
- Check alternative causes. Especially for human trauma, consider accidents, interpersonal violence and nonhunting activities.
- State what remains unknown. Do not supply an IQ, hunting-party size, language reconstruction or social hierarchy that the evidence does not provide.
Used this way, hunting evidence supports a picture of Neanderthals as technically capable, adaptable problem-solvers whose success depended on other people. Their intelligence appears in the organization of actions over time: making a weapon, choosing an approach, coordinating a dangerous encounter and sustaining members who could not immediately hunt. The evidence is powerful precisely because it connects cognition to everyday survival without pretending to reveal every part of Neanderthal minds or societies.
