Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani has argued that AI creates substantial work for IT services companies—but that is not the same as saying AI will protect every job. The official transcript of Infosys’s 2026 annual general meeting does not record Nilekani calling job-loss fears “hogwash.” In the passage that most directly raises those fears, the words belong to shareholder Santhosh Chopra.
Who called AI job-loss fears “hogwash”?
The available official record does not support attributing “hogwash” to Nilekani. In the 2026 AGM transcript, shareholder Santhosh Chopra says: “The world is saying that AI will wipe out IT companies, that coding will vanish, jobs will be lost, and clients will be alienated.” Chopra then offers his own view: “AI, too, is an opportunity, not a threat.”
Chopra also proposes “People First, reskill at speed, AI for Bharat.” That is a shareholder suggestion, not a policy announcement by Nilekani or Infosys. Keeping the speakers distinct matters: the shareholder raises fears about jobs and companies, while Nilekani’s public argument focuses on the work enterprises need to adopt AI and the business opportunity that work may create.
What Nilekani said about AI and jobs
In a shareholder address dated May 22, 2026, Nilekani said, “The demand for human capability grows, not shrinks.” He described AI as changing software work and enterprise requirements, with continuing needs in testing and validation, architecture, cybersecurity, data protection, modernization and integration with existing systems.

His point is that generating code is only part of deploying AI in a large organization. Companies must connect new tools to legacy platforms and transaction systems, establish safeguards, validate results and change how work gets done. Nilekani described the distance between promising pilots and widespread deployment as an execution challenge: “It is a deployment gap, and closing it requires what we have come to call a root-and-branch surgery: not layering AI onto existing structures, but redesigning the business processes, customer journeys, and operating models those structures were built to serve.”
That is a commercial thesis about the services enterprises may need—not evidence that all current roles will remain, or that AI will have no employment costs. The address cites a World Economic Forum projection of 92 million jobs displaced and 170 million created by 2030, a net gain of 78 million. These are projected figures, not observed outcomes; the speech page does not identify the WEF report edition.

Can AI replace Infosys—or create work for it?
Nilekani’s argument is that AI may automate some tasks while increasing demand for help with the harder work of implementation. For a large company, moving from an AI experiment to a dependable, integrated service can require process redesign, software modernization, data controls, security work and testing. Those needs can create projects for IT services firms, even as AI changes or reduces demand for some coding tasks.

Infosys has organized its AI offering around six service areas: AI strategy and engineering; data for AI; process AI; agentic legacy modernization; physical AI; and AI trust. In a February 17, 2026 announcement, the company said it was working with 90% of its top 200 clients on AI journeys and had more than 4,600 AI projects underway. These are company-reported figures; they indicate activity, not proof of future revenue, project success or job growth.

At the June 2026 AGM, Nilekani was reported as saying, “AI will not replace companies like ours. It will amplify those who move with purpose and adapt with speed.” The statement is about companies, not a guarantee for individual workers. Infosys leadership also estimated a $300–400 billion potential AI-first services opportunity by 2030. That is the company’s opportunity estimate, not an independently validated market forecast.

The statements support neither a blanket prediction that AI will eliminate IT-company jobs nor a promise that workers are safe. They describe two changes that can happen at once: AI can automate parts of software work, while organizations need people and services to make AI systems reliable, secure and useful at scale. Which roles expand, shrink or change depends on how companies adopt the technology; the cited statements do not quantify those employment effects at Infosys.

For workers, the practical implication is to pay attention to the tasks behind a role, not just its job title. Work involving system integration, data governance, cybersecurity, architecture, testing and business-process redesign appears in Nilekani’s account of enterprise adoption. That does not guarantee demand for any particular skill, but it shows why the transition is broader than code generation alone.

How to read the claims
- Employment outlook: Nilekani’s remarks and the WEF projection are broad arguments and projections, not a company-specific forecast of jobs at Infosys.
- Business opportunity: Infosys’s client and project counts are company-reported indicators of current activity; they do not establish how much work will convert to revenue.
- Market size: The $300–400 billion figure is an estimate from Infosys leadership, not an independently verified market total.
- Attribution: The transcript’s “jobs will be lost” passage is spoken by shareholder Santhosh Chopra. It does not substantiate the headline’s “hogwash” wording as a Nilekani quote.
