In music, “XML” usually refers to MusicXML, an XML-based format for representing and exchanging digital sheet music. It stores structured score information—such as parts, measures, and notes—so compatible notation and related applications can share a score. It is not an audio recording, and it is not necessarily a substitute for a program’s own project format.

What MusicXML represents

MusicXML is designed to represent common Western musical notation in a structured form. A document contains a score header followed by musical data; that data can describe elements such as parts, measures, and notes. The official introduction calls it “an XML-based music interchange language.” MusicXML’s introduction describes its purpose as exchanging score data among applications.

Because the score is represented as data rather than as a picture of a page, a compatible application can interpret it for tasks such as notation display, printing, performance, analysis, or retrieval. The exact result can depend on what the receiving application supports.

What MusicXML is used for

MusicXML is primarily an interchange format: a score can be created or edited in one compatible application, exported, and then opened by another application that supports the format. It is intended to make that handoff possible, not to guarantee that every program preserves every feature identically. Check the current documentation for the specific application and feature you plan to use.

  • 61 key keyboard piano kit: complete beginner set with stand, bench, headphones and note stickers.

MusicXML is also not meant to replace every application’s native project format. A native format may preserve editing details or application-specific features that are outside the interchange format’s purpose. Keep a copy in the original application’s format when you need those capabilities. The MusicXML introduction and tutorial explain the format’s interchange role.

MusicXML versus MIDI and audio

MusicXML can represent written notation as well as information describing a sonic realization, which is commonly used for MIDI playback. The W3C Music Notation Community Group’s tutorial, The MIDI-Compatible Part of MusicXML, distinguishes these roles: “One set of elements is used to represent how a piece of music is notated.” The tutorial describes notation and playback-related information as separate aspects of the format.

Audio Recorded or rendered sound Represents sound, not the structured notation of a score.

Partwise and timewise MusicXML

MusicXML can arrange the same score hierarchy in two ways. The difference is how the document nests parts and measures, not a distinction between two kinds of music.

  • Partwise: each part contains its measures.
  • Timewise: each measure contains the parts that occur in it.

The W3C MusicXML tutorial documents both organizations and notes that the preferred form depends on the application. See the W3C tutorial’s description of MusicXML structure.

How to open or validate a MusicXML file

Open, edit, or export a score

  1. Use a notation application that currently supports MusicXML.
  2. Open or import the MusicXML file using that application’s documented workflow.
  3. Inspect the score after import, especially any notation or playback-related details important to your work.
  4. Export to MusicXML when you need to pass the score to another compatible application; retain the native project file if you also need the source application’s editing features.

Support and feature handling vary by application, so confirm current import and export documentation rather than assuming complete compatibility.

Validate the document

MusicXML’s official developer documentation identifies XML Schema Definition (XSD) as the preferred validation method. It says DTDs have been deprecated as of MusicXML 4.0. MusicXML 4.0 was released in June 2021. For current technical guidance, use the MusicXML developer documentation rather than relying on older DTD-based instructions.
