In Windows, “multiple display adapters” means more than one graphics/display adapter is available to the operating system. It does not mean that multiple monitors are connected, and the listing alone does not indicate a problem. Check each adapter and its driver separately.
What “multiple display adapters” means
When Windows lists more than one item under Device Manager’s Display adapters category, the computer may have multiple display adapters available. Microsoft explains that each listed item represents a different adapter, while noting that multiple entries can indicate the device has multiple adapters (Microsoft Support).
The phrase describes graphics adapters recognized by Windows—not the number of screens connected, the number of graphics cards physically installed, or whether a fault exists.

Use Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Inspect each listed adapter. To check an individual driver, open that adapter’s properties and review its driver information.
Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool
- Open
dxdiag.exe. - Inspect the Display tabs. Multiple tabs may indicate multiple adapters.
- Check each tab to identify the adapter and driver in use.
Adapter count is not monitor count
A computer can have multiple adapters without having multiple monitors connected. Conversely, whether a computer can drive several screens depends on the adapters and attached displays as a configuration; Microsoft treats adapter and monitor requirements as separate considerations in its multi-display hardware testing guidance. Check Windows display settings and the actual cable connections to determine which monitors are connected and enabled.

What “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” indicates
If one entry is named Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is using its generic display driver for that adapter instead of a manufacturer-specific driver. Microsoft recommends installing the manufacturer’s driver when one is available (Microsoft Support).
A generic-driver entry can appear alongside an adapter using a manufacturer’s driver, so check each entry individually. A manufacturer driver may offer benefits such as improved performance, smoother video playback, higher resolutions, multi-monitor support, additional graphics features, or stability; these are possibilities, not guaranteed results for every PC or driver update (Microsoft Support).

Why a computer may have more than one adapter
Multiple adapters can be part of a computer’s graphics configuration. Some laptop models use hybrid graphics that switch between Intel and NVIDIA graphics, as described by one manufacturer’s support page; that example does not establish that every laptop, or every pair of adapters, works this way (Dell Support).

Multiple adapters also appear in specialized environments. NVIDIA documents virtual GPU deployments in which physical GPUs and virtual GPU devices have primary and secondary display-adapter roles. This is a virtualization example, not the usual explanation for a consumer laptop listing two adapters (NVIDIA Virtual GPU documentation).

When to investigate further
- You see Microsoft Basic Display Adapter: Check whether the computer or graphics hardware manufacturer provides a suitable driver.
- You want to know how many screens are active: Check Windows display settings and inspect the physical connections; Device Manager’s adapter list cannot answer that by itself.
- You are troubleshooting graphics behavior: Identify the adapter and driver involved rather than assuming every listed adapter is in use for the same task.
