Corn, soybean, and wheat futures prices move when traders change their estimate of future supply, demand, or both. The important information is not simply how large this year’s crop is. It is whether new weather data, acreage estimates, export sales, stocks, policy decisions, or disruptions make the expected balance tighter or looser than traders had already priced in. A report can therefore produce a rally on a seemingly bearish number, or a sell-off on a seemingly bullish one, if the result differs from expectations.
The basic mechanism: futures price an expected crop balance
A futures contract represents a price for delivery in a specified future period. Grain traders continually update an estimate of how much supply will be available, how much users will consume, and how much will remain at the end of the marketing year. The balance is usually discussed through production, imports, use, and ending stocks. All else equal, a smaller projected surplus tends to support prices, while a larger surplus tends to weigh on them.
That directional rule is not a price forecast. The market has already incorporated information that was available before a report or weather event. What moves the contract is the change in expectations: the difference between the new information and what traders expected beforehand. CME Group describes this surprise mechanism in its guide to major USDA reports: Understanding Major USDA Reports for Grains and Oilseed Markets.

Different delivery months can react differently. A nearby contract is more exposed to current inventories, harvest timing, logistics, and immediate demand. A deferred contract may respond more to next season’s acreage, weather risk, and longer-term policy. Always identify the contract month before explaining a move; a statement about “corn prices” can be misleading if it combines contracts with different supply windows.

Supply: acreage, yield, weather, and stocks
Acreage sets the starting potential
Planted and harvested acreage determine how much land is available to produce a crop. Early in the season, traders compare acreage intentions with prior years, farmer surveys, planting economics, and market expectations. Later estimates replace intentions with reported planted area and eventually harvested area. More acres can increase expected production, but the effect depends on yield and whether the crop reaches harvest.
USDA’s monthly WASDE report provides U.S. and world supply-and-use forecasts for wheat, coarse grains such as corn, and oilseeds such as soybeans. The USDA outlook process combines survey information, market news, trade data, foreign reporting, satellite imagery, weather analysis, and other agency information; its methodology is described by the Economic Research Service in USDA Outlook Process.
Yield turns acreage into actual supply
Yield estimates answer a different question: how much crop will each acre produce? A small change in an expected national yield can alter production by millions of bushels, so yield assumptions often become more important as the crop develops. Survey-based estimates, field reports, crop conditions, and eventually measured harvest results all replace earlier assumptions.
Weather matters through crop development
Weather affects prices only through its effect on expected supply, crop quality, or timing. The relevant links change through the calendar:

- Planting: Excessive rain, wet soils, or a late start can reduce planted area or shift decisions between crops.
- Vegetative growth: Temperature and moisture influence stand development and yield potential.
- Pollination: Heat or drought at a sensitive stage can change corn yield expectations quickly.
- Pod filling: Soybean moisture and temperature conditions can affect the number and weight of beans.
- Grain filling and maturation: Conditions influence wheat quality, test weight, disease risk, and harvest timing.
- Harvest: Delays can tighten nearby availability, while rapid harvest progress can improve near-term supply visibility.
USDA’s seasonal Crop Progress reporting tracks planting, development, harvest progress, and crop condition. CME’s report guide lists Crop Progress alongside acreage, Grain Stocks, and WASDE as recurring information watched by grain and oilseed markets: CME report guide. A crop-condition percentage is not itself a yield forecast; traders interpret it alongside the crop’s stage, weather outlook, acreage, and prior expectations.
Stocks reveal what is available now
Ending stocks are a forward-looking estimate, while a Grain Stocks report is a measured inventory snapshot at a particular date. Stocks can confirm whether earlier production and use assumptions were too high or too low. The location of inventories, their quality, and the amount committed to users also matter. A large national total does not guarantee that every elevator, processor, or export corridor has abundant nearby supply.
Stocks should be read with the marketing-year balance. A quarterly increase may reflect a large harvest, weak demand, or both; it is not automatically bearish. Conversely, a smaller stock number can be supportive only if traders did not already expect it.
Demand: the channels differ by crop
Corn: feed, ethanol, and exports
Corn demand has three major channels: livestock feed, ethanol and related biofuel use, and exports. Feed demand depends on livestock numbers, feeding margins, and substitution with other grains. Ethanol demand connects corn to fuel consumption, plant margins, energy markets, and biofuel policy. Export demand depends on overseas buyers, exchange and freight conditions, competing origins, and the pace of U.S. shipments.

The USDA Economic Research Service discusses corn and other feed-grain uses in Corn and Other Feed Grains. Strong demand in one channel can offset weakness in another. For example, a slower export program does not have a fixed price effect if feed or ethanol use is being revised higher at the same time.
Soybeans: exports, crushing, meal, and oil
Soybean demand is split between whole-bean exports and domestic crushing. Crushers produce soybean meal, used mainly in animal feed, and soybean oil, used in food and industrial applications. The value of those co-products affects crushing economics and therefore the incentive to process beans.
Soybean oil also links the crop to biofuel rules and renewable-fuel markets. A policy change that improves the outlook for vegetable-oil feedstock can increase expected oil demand, but the effect on whole soybeans depends on crush margins, meal demand, imports, and competing oils. The USDA ERS explains these relationships in Soybeans and Oil Crops.
Wheat: a global, segmented market
Wheat is highly global and should not be treated as one perfectly interchangeable product. Class, protein, quality, geography, port access, and intended use affect which supplies can replace one another. Food, feed, and export demand can move differently, and a change in one class may not translate one-for-one into every wheat futures contract.

Reports that regularly move grain futures
| Report or data set | What it helps answer | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| WASDE | How are production, use, imports, exports, and ending stocks changing for the United States and world? | Compare the revision with the market’s prior expectation and with changes in other balance-sheet lines. |
| Crop Progress | Are planting, development, condition, and harvest progressing normally? | Relate the observation to crop stage and weather; progress alone does not establish final yield. |
| Prospective Plantings and Acreage | How much area do producers intend to plant, and how much was actually planted? | Use intentions as an early supply signal, then update the view when reported acreage arrives. |
| Grain Stocks | How much inventory was measured at the report date? | Read the number with use, location, quality, and the marketing-year balance. |
| Export Sales | What foreign purchases have been booked, and how are shipments progressing? | Separate sales commitments from physical shipments and account for competing suppliers. |
| USDA ERS outlooks | What structural forces shape feed, crushing, biofuel, wheat, and trade demand? | Use the outlook for context rather than as a real-time quote or guaranteed forecast. |
WASDE is prepared and released by USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board. Release dates and report contents can change, so use the current USDA publication page and the latest report when checking a number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a “bullish” report can cause a price drop
Markets respond to surprises, not labels. Suppose traders expected a very large stockpile and the report shows a large stockpile that is nevertheless smaller than expected. The result may be bullish because the surplus is less burdensome than priced in. Conversely, a production cut can trigger a decline if traders expected an even larger cut or if demand was reduced elsewhere in the same report.
Read the full balance sheet rather than one headline. A lower yield estimate may be offset by more beginning stocks, fewer exports, or weaker domestic use. A supportive production number may be overwhelmed by a larger revision to competing origins. The direction also depends on positioning: when many traders already hold the same view, a report that merely confirms it may produce little follow-through, while a surprise can prompt rapid repositioning.

Outside shocks can change the balance between reports. Weather in other producing countries, geopolitical events, trade policy, energy prices, and transport disruptions can alter expected global supply, demand, or the ability to move grain. CME’s September 21, 2026 market commentary, What’s Behind the Latest Surge in Grain and Oilseed Prices?, is a date-specific example of analysts discussing weather, geopolitics, USDA yield and stocks revisions, feed demand, crush, exports, and biofuel-policy signals together. Those observations describe that market window; they are not current forecasts or permanent price relationships.
How the three markets differ
| Question | Corn | Soybeans | Wheat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary supply focus | Acreage, yield, stocks, and crop progress | Acreage, yield, stocks, and crop progress | Global production, class and quality, stocks, and trade |
| Key demand channels | Livestock feed, ethanol, and exports | Exports, crushing, soybean meal, soybean oil, and biofuel-related oil demand | Food and feed use, exports, and competing origins |
| Reports to follow | WASDE, Crop Progress, Acreage, Grain Stocks, and Export Sales | WASDE, Crop Progress, Acreage, Grain Stocks, Export Sales, and the ERS oil-crop outlook | WASDE, Crop Progress, Grain Stocks, Export Sales, and the ERS wheat outlook |
| Main interpretation caution | Feed, ethanol, and exports can offset one another. | Analyze the linked bean, meal, and oil balances. | Do not treat all classes and origins as interchangeable. |
A practical process for explaining a futures move
- Name the contract and time: Record the crop, delivery month, exchange session, and date. Nearby and deferred contracts may be reacting to different information.
- Identify the dated information: Check the report, weather update, policy announcement, export data, or disruption that changed during the session.
- Translate it into supply: Ask whether acreage, yield, production, imports, stocks, quality, or timing changed. State the direction only after identifying the affected balance-sheet line.
- Translate it into demand: Check feed, ethanol, crush, meal, oil, food, exports, and shipments relevant to that crop.
- Check the global alternative: Determine whether another origin, class, or substitute can replace the affected supply and whether freight or geopolitical conditions limit that replacement.
- Compare with expectations: Find what traders were expecting before the release. The surprise, not the headline adjective, is the likely explanation for the first reaction.
- Look for confirmation: Compare related contracts and products, such as soybean meal and oil, nearby versus deferred months, or U.S. exports with competing origins. Treat these comparisons as context, not proof of causation.
- Separate explanation from prediction: A credible explanation identifies what changed and why it matters; it does not claim that one report guarantees the next price move.
Common mistakes when interpreting grain futures
- Blaming weather directly: A forecast matters only if it changes expected yield, quality, timing, or demand.
- Using a report total without the baseline: Always compare the figure with the prior estimate and consensus expectation.
- Confusing export sales with shipments: A booking is a commitment; physical movement can occur later or be changed.
- Treating national stocks as local availability: Location, quality, and logistics determine whether inventory can serve a specific buyer.
- Ignoring co-products: Soybean economics depend on both meal and oil, not beans alone.
- Assuming all wheat is equivalent: Class, quality, geography, and destination can create separate supply-and-demand balances.
- Calling correlation causation: Several pieces of information can arrive together, and a price move alone cannot prove which factor dominated.
- Turning a dated example into a current forecast: Market conditions and report expectations change; use time-stamped commentary only for the period it describes.
What this framework can—and cannot—tell you
The framework identifies the fundamental information that commonly changes futures prices: expected supply, expected demand, global competition, policy, logistics, and the surprise relative to expectations. It does not supply a live quote, a specific crop forecast, a contract-month target, or a universal sensitivity ranking among corn, soybeans, and wheat. Those values must be checked in current primary data for the relevant market and date.
For a disciplined explanation, start with the crop balance, follow the crop’s seasonal stage, separate its demand channels, compare U.S. developments with competing origins, and then ask what the market had already anticipated. That sequence is more reliable than inferring a cause from the direction of a single price bar.
