Not yet—not on the evidence described here. Technologies can suppress some mosquito populations or reduce transmission of particular infections in specific settings. That is not the same as proving that a mosquito-borne disease can be eradicated. A randomized trial in Yogyakarta found reduced dengue outcomes after deployment of mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia, while the cited genetic-control record describes a field test intended to reduce local mosquito numbers, not disease eradication.
What does “eradicate mosquito-borne disease” mean?
The claim can refer to very different results. Fewer mosquitoes is a population-control outcome; fewer confirmed infections or hospitalizations is a human-health outcome. Local elimination is narrower than eradication, which means ending a disease worldwide. Evidence for one outcome does not establish the next.
For example, a field trial may show that a target mosquito population declined without measuring whether people became infected less often. Conversely, a disease-outcome trial can show fewer cases in its study area without proving that transmission has stopped everywhere or will remain absent over time.
Which mosquito technologies are being discussed?
These approaches do not all work in the same way. Some seek to reduce mosquito numbers; others aim to make mosquitoes less able to transmit a pathogen.

| Approach | What it is intended to do | Evidence or endpoint described here | What that evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wolbachia deployment | Deploy mosquitoes carrying the wMel strain to reduce pathogen transmission. | A cluster-randomized trial in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, reported fewer symptomatic, virologically confirmed dengue infections and hospitalizations in intervention areas. | It does not establish eradication, or the same effect for other pathogens, places, or interventions. |
| Sterile-male population suppression | Release sterile males to reduce reproduction in a target mosquito population. | The described methods review distinguishes this population-suppression strategy from approaches intended to replace a population with mosquitoes less able to transmit pathogens. | A reduction in mosquito abundance alone does not demonstrate a reduction in human disease. |
| Genetically modified mosquitoes | Use genetic approaches proposed to reduce disease transmission; strategies can differ in whether they are self-limiting or potentially self-propagating. | WHO’s 2021 framework sets out staged evaluation from laboratory research and field testing toward possible implementation. | The existence of a framework or a field test is not proof of safety, effectiveness, or eradication. |
| Bti larval control | Use insecticidal proteins from Bti as a mosquito-control measure, including against larvae. | The methods review describes Bti as a mosquito-control agent. | It is not gene editing or Wolbachia deployment, and its use does not establish disease eradication. |
What has Wolbachia shown against dengue?
The clearest disease-outcome example in the evidence covered here is the cluster-randomized trial in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In areas where mosquitoes carrying the wMel strain were deployed, the trial reported fewer symptomatic, virologically confirmed dengue infections and fewer hospitalizations than in comparison areas.
That is evidence of reduced dengue outcomes in the setting studied—not proof that dengue was eradicated. The result should not be generalized automatically to other mosquito species, pathogens, locations, or deployment programs. The available account also does not provide a numerical effect estimate to repeat here.

What do genetically modified mosquitoes and gene drives do?
“Genetically modified mosquitoes” is an umbrella term, not a synonym for gene drive. Some approaches are designed to be self-limiting; gene-drive strategies may be designed to spread through a population. Their persistence and governance implications can therefore differ.

WHO’s 2021 framework describes a staged route from laboratory work through field testing and possible implementation, with attention to safety, efficacy, regulation, and social and ethical issues. WHO’s 2020 position document also calls for stepwise research and governance mechanisms to assess health, environmental, and ecological implications. Neither document establishes that a genetic approach has eradicated a disease.

- HASSLE-FREE AND EASY TO USE: Quiet and effective mosquito control without flames, sprays, or batteries - just set-up per directions using a refill band and water, replace the band every 30 days, and check water level periodically to refill as needed
- LARGE PROTECTION ZONE: Ortho Home Defense Mosquito Kill & Prevent protects up to 4,300 sq. ft. against mosquitoes and larvae (Aedes and Culex spp)
What does the Oxitec OX5034 record establish?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s record describes an experimental use permit for field testing OX5034 on specified acreage in Monroe County, Florida, and Harris County, Texas, through April 2022. The stated objective was to evaluate reduction of local mosquito populations. That is a population-reduction objective, not a reported finding of fewer human infections or eradication.
Because the cited record describes a permit with an end date in 2022, it does not establish present U.S. authorization or nationwide deployment. Do not treat that historical field-test record as evidence of current approval.

What would it take to support an eradication claim?
A convincing claim would need evidence at the level of the claim. A mosquito count is not a substitute for human-health outcomes, and a decline in cases in one place is not by itself proof of durable, worldwide eradication.

How should readers interpret the headline claim?
There is real technology for mosquito control and for reducing transmission in particular circumstances. The strongest disease-outcome example here is the Yogyakarta dengue trial; the genetic-control record described here concerns a time-limited test aimed at mosquito-population reduction. Neither supports the broader conclusion that mosquito-borne disease has been eradicated or that current technology can reliably eradicate it.
