In 2026, the newest standardized JavaScript features are grouped in ECMAScript 2025 (ES2025), while ES2024 added several practical APIs that are now part of the language standard. JavaScript is standardized as ECMAScript, but a feature’s inclusion in an edition does not guarantee that every browser or server runtime supports it. Choose features for the problem they solve, then check your actual target environments before using them.

What’s new in JavaScript in 2026?

ECMAScript 2026 is the current specification reference. Its edition history identifies ES2025 as the 16th edition and ES2024 as the 15th. Those recent editions are useful ways to organize the newer capabilities developers may encounter, rather than promises that every environment implements them. Ecma International’s ECMAScript 2026 specification records the standard and its edition history.

The ES2025 additions include iterator helpers, Set operations, import attributes and JSON modules, RegExp.escape, inline regular-expression modifier flags, Promise.try, and Float16Array with related APIs. ES2024 added grouping methods, promise and buffer APIs, a new regular-expression mode, and methods for checking and repairing ill-formed Unicode strings. ES2023 also introduced non-mutating array methods that remain useful in modern code.

Which ES2025 features are useful in practice?

Iterator helpers for lazy pipelines

Iterator helpers let you compose common operations over iterator sequences. They are useful when you want to transform or filter values as they are consumed, rather than first building a new array for every step. That lazy behavior is different from eager array methods: a pipeline does not necessarily process every item immediately, and it is not an array with all of an array’s methods or behavior. Use iterator helpers when deferred processing fits the data flow; use arrays when you need an eager collection or array-specific operations.

Set methods for set relationships

ES2025 adds common operations to Set.prototype, making relationships such as intersection or difference more direct to express than repeated manual membership checks. For example, when comparing two sets of permissions, an intersection can represent the permissions they share. Check the exact method semantics in the standard or runtime documentation for your target before relying on a particular operation.

Import attributes and JSON modules

Import attributes state how a particular module should be loaded. The current syntax uses with, not the older assert form:

import data from "./data.json" with { type: "json" };

The type attribute lets the runtime validate the expected module type. MDN describes the previous assert syntax as non-standard and warns that unsupported attributes can fail. Node.js documents type: 'json' as mandatory for JSON modules; its module resolution rules also differ from browsers’ URL-based loading. Consult MDN’s import attributes reference and the Node.js ECMAScript modules documentation for the environment you are targeting.

RegExp.escape for literal input

RegExp.escape is intended to escape a string before incorporating it as literal content in a regular expression. It can help prevent a user-provided string from being interpreted as regex syntax, but it does not replace thoughtful pattern design, input validation, or a decision about whether a regular expression is appropriate.

Inline regular-expression modifier flags

Inline modifier flags let a pattern enable or disable selected regular-expression flags within part of the expression. This can make a localized matching rule more explicit when the surrounding pattern needs different flag behavior. Because regular-expression syntax support varies by runtime, verify that your target engines accept the syntax before shipping it.

Promise.try for promise-based function results

Promise.try wraps a function that may return either a plain value or a promise, producing a promise-based result. It is useful when a calling path should handle synchronous returns and asynchronous work through promise chaining. It does not make the underlying operation asynchronous by itself; use it to normalize how the result is handled, not as a substitute for understanding when the function runs.

Float16Array for half-precision data

Float16Array, along with related DataView and Math.f16round APIs, supports half-precision floating-point data. This is a specialized representation for code and interfaces that need it, not a default replacement for Float32Array. Choose the representation that fits the precision and interoperability requirements of the data you are handling.

Which ES2024 features should you know?

Object.groupBy and Map.groupBy

Both methods group iterable items according to a callback-derived key. Choose Object.groupBy when an object-shaped result suits the keys and the way you will use the groups. Choose Map.groupBy when a Map is the more appropriate result for your key and lookup needs. Neither method should be assumed to be faster without a benchmark for the relevant engines and workload.

Promise.withResolvers when control flow needs exposed resolvers

Promise.withResolvers returns a promise together with its resolve and reject functions. That can simplify integrations where the code that creates a promise and the code that settles it are separate. Keep ownership clear: externally held resolver functions are a focused control-flow tool, not a default replacement for returning and chaining promises.

Resizable and transferable buffers for binary data

ES2024 added resizable and transferable ArrayBuffer and SharedArrayBuffer capabilities. They are relevant to code that manages binary data or needs to resize or transfer buffers, but most application code does not need to adopt them simply because they are standardized. Check the relevant API behavior and runtime support for the specific buffer workflow you need.

The /v flag for advanced matching

The ES2024 regular-expression /v flag supports more advanced set-of-strings matching. It is an option for complex patterns, not a reason to use a regular expression where a simpler string operation is clearer. Confirm that the target engines support the flag before depending on it.

Well-formed Unicode string methods

String.prototype.isWellFormed() checks whether a string contains lone surrogates, and toWellFormed() returns a well-formed string. These methods can help at data boundaries where malformed string data matters. They do not perform Unicode normalization, so they do not make canonically equivalent text identical.

When should you use non-mutating array methods?

ES2023 added toSorted(), toReversed(), toSpliced(), and with(). They produce changed array values without mutating the original, which makes the intended update clearer when preserving the source array matters.

const sortedCopy = items.toSorted(compareItems);

By contrast, sort() changes the array it is called on. Pick the mutating or non-mutating operation deliberately: non-mutating methods are useful for predictable state updates, while mutation may be appropriate when changing the existing array is intentional.

Which JavaScript foundations still matter?

Not every high-value feature is new. These language foundations remain worth using well:

  • const and let provide block-scoped bindings; use const when a binding will not be reassigned and let when it will.
  • Arrow functions offer concise function expressions and lexical handling of this; use them where that behavior fits rather than replacing every function declaration.
  • Template literals make interpolated strings easier to read. Destructuring extracts values from arrays and objects, while rest and spread syntax collect or expand values.
  • Optional chaining (?.) and nullish coalescing (??) help express access through possibly missing values and defaults that apply only to null or undefined. Both were standardized in ES2020.
  • Promises and async/await provide ways to compose asynchronous work. Use explicit error handling at boundaries where failures need to be handled.
  • ES modules provide import and export for organizing code. In browsers, module scripts use type="module", and the server must return a JavaScript MIME type. Static imports and exports belong in module contexts; dynamic import() loads a module asynchronously. See MDN’s JavaScript modules guide.

Are modern JavaScript features supported in all browsers and runtimes?

No. The ECMAScript standard, browser implementations, and server runtimes are separate layers. MDN marks import attributes Baseline 2025, but also cautions that older browsers and devices may not support them. That status is not a guarantee for every environment your application serves.

Before relying on a newer feature, check compatibility for the exact syntax or API against your supported browsers and runtimes. State and test the minimum target where that matters. Transpilation can transform some newer syntax, but it does not automatically supply every missing built-in API; polyfills may be needed for some APIs, and not every feature can be handled the same way. For modules, verify both the client or server runtime and the loading setup, including the relevant module type and resolution rules.

How should you choose a modern feature?

  • Intent: Prefer a native method when it makes the operation clearer than a hand-written helper, without obscuring the data flow.
  • Mutation: Decide whether changing the original value is intended; for arrays, use a non-mutating method when preserving the original matters.
  • Evaluation: Use iterator helpers when lazy processing is useful, and arrays when you need an eager collection.
  • Data semantics: Pick object or map grouping based on the result you need; use Unicode well-formedness checks for that specific boundary concern, not as a substitute for normalization.
  • Portability: Verify actual browser and runtime support rather than inferring it from an edition number.
  • Performance: Do not assume a newer built-in is faster. A useful speed comparison needs a benchmark that identifies the engine, version, input, and method.
