Milwaukee brushless motors replace the physical brushes and commutator found in traditional brushed motors with electronic control. That removes brush-contact friction and lets the tool adjust torque, speed and power use electronically. In practice, a brushless tool can offer efficient operation, useful runtime and no motor-brush replacement, but the size of the benefit depends on the exact tool, battery, workload and price. You do not automatically need brushless, and “brushless” is not the same thing as Milwaukee’s higher-tier “FUEL” system.
What a Milwaukee brushless motor is
In a brushed DC motor, carbon brushes press against a rotating commutator to send current into the armature. That contact creates friction and electrical wear. The brushes eventually wear down and can produce heat, electrical noise and arcing.
A brushless motor removes that physical contact. Sensors and a controller switch current through the motor’s windings electronically as the rotor turns. The controller can vary the motor’s speed and torque response instead of relying only on a trigger and mechanical gearing. Milwaukee Europe describes this as removing “friction-based energy loss via brushes” and electronically adjusting torque, speed and power usage for the task.

Those are design advantages, not a promise that every brushless tool will run cooler, last longer or deliver a specific percentage more work. Milwaukee’s older technology brochure says brushless tools generate more power, generate less heat and do not require motor-brush replacement; that is a manufacturer statement from about 2020, not an independent controlled comparison.

What disappears—and what does not
- No motor-brush replacement: the motor has no carbon brushes to change. Other wear items, such as a chuck, gears, switch, bearings, cutting line or battery, can still need service or replacement.
- Less brush friction: eliminating brush contact can reduce one source of energy loss and heat. Actual efficiency varies with the controller, gearing, load and battery.
- Electronic control: the tool can regulate output more precisely. Protection features and control software are part of the complete tool system, not the motor alone.
How the motor relates to Milwaukee’s battery and electronics
Milwaukee separates motor technology from the other systems in a cordless tool. The company’s M18 FUEL overview identifies three elements: a POWERSTATE brushless motor, a REDLITHIUM battery pack and REDLINK PLUS intelligence hardware and software. REDLINK PLUS is described as communication between battery and tool, including overload, overheating and over-discharge protection.
That distinction matters when you see a claim about “power,” “runtime” or “durability.” A larger battery, different gearing, a more capable controller and a better cooling design can all change results. It is inaccurate to credit every advantage of a FUEL tool to the brushless motor by itself.
Milwaukee’s FUEL overview says its combination delivers “unmatched power, run-time, and durability on the jobsite.” That wording is a Milwaukee marketing claim, not an independently measured result. No universal, matched-model test establishes a fixed runtime or lifespan improvement for every Milwaukee brushless tool.
Brushless versus FUEL: the labels are not interchangeable
Brushless identifies the motor type. FUEL identifies a broader Milwaukee system that combines a POWERSTATE brushless motor with REDLITHIUM batteries and REDLINK PLUS electronics. A tool can be brushless without being FUEL.

Milwaukee’s own string-trimmer lineup shows why the name alone is insufficient:
- The M18 Brushless string trimmer is positioned as a lightweight, dedicated trimmer for standard trimming.
- The M18 FUEL 16-inch trimmer is a higher-power step up.
- The M18 FUEL QUIK-LOK power head is designed for more power and multiple attachments.
Those are different tools for different jobs. Compare cutting capacity, controls, attachment support, weight, battery needs and package price rather than assuming that every FUEL product is the right choice or that every non-FUEL brushless tool is underpowered.
What the published specifications actually show
The following figures come from Milwaukee’s current product listings for specific models. They describe those tools, not a universal brushless standard or a brushed-versus-brushless laboratory test.

| M18 Compact Brushless 1/2-inch Drill/Driver (2801-20) | Drilling and fastening | 500 in-lb torque; 0–500 and 0–1,800 RPM; 6.5-inch length; 3.4 lb with CP2.0 battery | A compact general-purpose example with two speed ranges. Torque and speed are model-specific. |
| M18 Brushless 1/4-inch Impact Driver (2851-20) | Fastening | 1,600 in-lb torque; 3,400 RPM; 5.1-inch tool length | A separate fastening-focused design. Its higher torque figure should not be compared as if it were a drill/driver rating. |
| M18 Brushless String Trimmer (2828-20E) | Grass trimming | Up to 1.39 peak horsepower; up to 6,200 RPM; up to 20 minutes of constant trimming runtime | Milwaukee’s stated maximums for this model. Runtime depends on conditions and is not a general motor figure. |
Torque, RPM, horsepower and runtime describe different things. Torque indicates turning force, RPM indicates rotational speed, horsepower is a power-output rating and runtime is an application estimate. A tool with a larger number in one column is not automatically better for your task.

When paying for brushless is worthwhile
Frequent or heavy cordless work
If you use a drill, driver, saw or outdoor tool every week, reduced brush wear and electronic control can matter over many sessions. Runtime advantages may reduce battery changes, while less heat can be useful during sustained loads. The practical value comes from the complete tool and battery combination, not from the word brushless on the box.
Long sessions and difficult materials
Driving long fasteners, drilling large holes, cutting dense material or trimming continuously places more demand on a motor. In these conditions, compare the exact model’s torque, speed range, capacity and protection features. A brushless model may maintain useful output more efficiently, but there is no single runtime multiplier that applies to every job.
Compactness and overhead work
Brushless designs can support compact tool layouts because they eliminate the brush assembly. Size and weight still depend on gearing, housing and battery. Milwaukee lists the 2801-20 drill/driver at 6.5 inches long and 3.4 pounds with a CP2.0 battery, which makes it a concrete option for users who value maneuverability. That specification should not be generalized to every brushless model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen a less expensive tool is enough
For occasional household tasks—assembling furniture, hanging shelves or drilling a few small holes—a brushed or standard brushless model can be adequate if its capacity meets the job. A higher purchase price may not pay back for infrequent use. Decide from the task, expected hours of use and total package cost rather than assuming an upgrade is mandatory.

Check battery compatibility before buying
Milwaukee’s cited 2801-20 drill/driver and 2851-20 impact driver are M18-compatible. That does not mean every Milwaukee battery fits every tool: confirm the exact platform and model in the current listing.
- Identify the battery platform you own. Record whether your batteries are M18 and note their capacity, such as a CP2.0 pack.
- Check the exact model number. Compatibility is determined by the tool’s product specification, not by a similar name.
- Compare bare-tool and kit contents. A bare tool normally does not include a battery or charger. A kit may include one or more batteries, a charger and accessories.
- Price the complete setup. If you need a battery and charger, include those costs when comparing a brushless or FUEL option with a cheaper tool.
- Account for battery size and balance. A larger pack can extend working time but add weight, which matters for overhead drilling or trimming.
A practical comparison method
Use this checklist when two Milwaukee tools appear similar:
- Task and output: Match the tool to drilling, fastening, cutting or trimming. Use the model’s torque, speed, cutting capacity or attachment specification.
- Runtime: Treat stated runtime as an estimate tied to a battery and application. Load, material, technique and battery condition change the result.
- Size and weight: Check bare-tool dimensions and the weight with the battery you will actually use.
- Controls and protection: Determine which electronic protections and operating modes belong to that model. Do not assume every brushless tool includes the same software or hardware.
- Included items: Distinguish a bare tool from a kit and verify chargers, batteries, guards, blades, line or other required accessories.
- Frequency of use: Frequent, demanding work gives runtime and brush-free maintenance more opportunity to matter; occasional light work puts more weight on upfront price.
- Existing batteries: Batteries you already own can make a compatible bare tool less expensive than starting a new platform.
Maintenance: brushless does not mean maintenance-free
The motor itself has no brushes to inspect or replace, but the tool still has mechanical, electrical and environmental maintenance needs. Keep vents clear, remove dust and grass according to the tool’s instructions, inspect cords or housings for damage, and check moving parts for unusual noise or play. Drills and impact drivers still have chucks, gears and triggers; trimmers still have cutting heads, guards and line. Batteries and chargers also require proper storage and inspection.
Do not open a battery pack or controller unless the manufacturer specifically authorizes that service. If a tool overheats, stops under load or shows repeated protection shutdowns, reduce the load and check the battery, vents and accessories before assuming the motor has failed. Persistent faults call for an authorized service assessment rather than a brush replacement, because there are no motor brushes to change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every brushless tool is FUEL
Look for the FUEL designation and the listed motor, battery and intelligence features. “M18 Brushless” alone does not establish that the tool is FUEL.
Comparing unrelated torque numbers
A 1,600 in-lb impact-driver rating and a 500 in-lb drill/driver rating describe different tool designs and jobs. Choose the tool type first, then compare models within that category.
Treating a runtime claim as a guarantee
The trimmer’s “up to 20 minutes” figure is a manufacturer-stated maximum for constant trimming with conditions that are not universal. Grass density, line size, technique and battery capacity all affect actual runtime.

Ignoring package contents
A low bare-tool price can be misleading if you need a battery and charger. Conversely, a kit may cost more upfront but include items you would otherwise purchase separately.
Expecting a universal lifespan increase
Brushless construction removes brush replacement and one source of friction, but tool life also depends on bearings, gears, electronics, batteries, dust, moisture, overloads and service. No fixed lifespan advantage has been established for every Milwaukee model.
So, do you need a Milwaukee brushless motor?
You probably value brushless when you use cordless tools often, work under sustained load, need manageable size and weight, or want to avoid replacing motor brushes. Start by selecting the correct tool category and checking its published specifications. Then decide whether FUEL-level electronics and battery integration add value for your workload.
You probably do not need to pay extra solely for the label if your use is occasional and light, a less expensive model meets the required capacity, and you already have a compatible battery setup. There is no evidence for a universal percentage improvement that justifies an upgrade for every buyer. The sensible choice is the model whose output, runtime, ergonomics, battery compatibility and complete price fit the work you actually do.
