Microgravity removes the strong directional gravity cue that plants use for gravitropism. Roots and shoots can therefore adopt different orientations and growth habits, while spaceflight remodels gene activity, RNA processing, protein abundance and metabolism. The response depends on species, tissue, light, exposure time and other spacecraft conditions, so there is no single percentage change that applies to every plant.
Microgravity changes the plant’s directional reference
On Earth, a plant integrates gravity with light, moisture and other environmental signals to decide where roots and shoots should grow. Gravity normally provides a persistent up–down reference: roots typically direct growth toward the gravity vector and shoots away from it. In microgravity, that vector is too weak to serve as a dominant cue. The plant is still alive and can look broadly normal, but its growth pattern may differ from an Earth-grown control.
This is not the same as saying that plants stop growing. Cells continue to divide, elongate and build tissues; what changes is how those processes are coordinated in space. Root and shoot orientation can become less aligned with the familiar terrestrial pattern, and the shape and organization of tissues can change. NASA’s TAGES-ISA investigation uses Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings to examine root structure, growth and cell-wall remodeling under spaceflight conditions.

A visible difference is only the first layer of the response. The same altered gravity environment can change which genes are active, how RNA is processed, which proteins accumulate and how those proteins are modified. Those molecular changes can feed back into photosynthesis, metabolism, cell-wall formation and development.

What happens to roots and shoots
Roots lose their usual gravitropic direction
Without a strong gravity vector, roots no longer receive the clear directional signal that normally helps them orient downward. NASA describes microgravity-grown plants as generally normal in appearance but capable of distinctly different growth habits. The result is an altered trajectory and organization rather than a universal failure to make roots.
Root responses also depend on the tissue being examined and on competing cues. Light direction, water distribution, airflow and the physical arrangement of the growth hardware can all influence the path a root takes. A root grown in orbit is therefore responding to a combination of weakened gravity information and the remaining environmental signals.
Shoots can adopt different growth habits
Shoots likewise lose the dominant gravity reference that normally helps establish upward growth. Their orientation can shift, especially when light is used as the stronger directional cue. The visible phenotype may be subtle in one experiment and more pronounced in another because species, genotype, lighting and exposure duration differ.

Plant growth depends on controlled loosening, strengthening and rebuilding of cell walls. TAGES-ISA specifically investigates cell-wall remodeling alongside root structure and growth, because changes in wall composition or mechanics can alter how cells elongate and how tissues maintain their shape. A change in root direction is therefore connected to the physical construction of the root, not merely to a navigation decision made by the plant.
Microgravity remodels gene expression rather than simply “changing DNA”
The strongest evidence concerns regulation of genetic information, not a wholesale rewrite of the DNA sequence. A plant’s genome provides the same inherited instructions, but microgravity and associated spaceflight conditions can change when particular genes are transcribed and how much RNA and protein is produced.

NASA’s APEX-07 investigation summarizes the finding this way: “Previous research shows that microgravity conditions during spaceflight affects which genes turn on or off, which proteins are present and in what amounts, and the modifications made to those proteins.” The APEX-07 investigation page was updated May 21, 2023.
That statement covers several distinct molecular layers:
Recommended Free Tools
- Transcription: the set of messenger RNAs produced from genes can shift, changing the cell’s instructions for making proteins.
- Translation: even when an RNA is present, the amount of protein made from it can change.
- Protein abundance: proteins can accumulate at different levels, altering pathways for growth, photosynthesis or metabolism.
- Post-translational modification: chemical changes made to proteins can alter their activity, location or stability without changing the underlying gene sequence.
Because these layers do not always move together, measuring only one of them can miss an important part of the response. A transcript may increase while its translation into protein changes little, or a protein’s activity may shift because of modification rather than abundance.
RNA regulation adds another level of control
APEX-07 focuses on roots and shoots and is designed to characterize more than a list of genes that are turned on or off. It measures the transcriptome (the RNA molecules present), the translatome (the RNAs being actively used to make proteins), alternative splicing and small-RNA landscapes.
Alternative splicing
A single gene can produce different RNA versions through alternative splicing. Those versions may encode proteins with different properties or change how much functional message reaches the translation machinery. If microgravity changes splicing, the plant can alter protein function without changing the DNA code.

Small RNAs
Small RNAs help regulate message stability and translation. Mapping them alongside messenger RNAs can reveal post-transcriptional controls that would be invisible in a basic gene-expression list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why roots and shoots must be measured separately
Roots and shoots perform different jobs and receive different signals, so they can activate different molecular programs in the same plant. A whole-plant average might hide a strong root response or a shoot-specific change. APEX-07’s tissue-specific design addresses that problem by analyzing both organs rather than treating the plant as one uniform sample.
Plant responses extend across several physiological systems
Plant Habitat-01 compares Arabidopsis grown at Earth-normal gravity (1g) and in microgravity using a multi-omics design. Its measurements span phenomics (observable traits), metabolomics (small molecules), transcriptomics (RNA), and proteomics (proteins). The investigation examines photosynthesis, cell-wall formation, growth and development, and gene function.
This integrated approach matters because a molecular difference is biologically meaningful only when it connects to plant performance. For example, a transcript change may be associated with altered photosynthetic machinery, a metabolite pattern may indicate a shift in energy use, and a proteomic result may show whether the corresponding pathway is actually being built or regulated. Looking across layers helps distinguish a transient molecular signal from a change that affects how the plant grows.
It also prevents an overly simple interpretation of “stress.” A stress-related gene can be activated without the plant suffering the same degree of visible damage in every experiment. Conversely, a plant that looks normal may still have substantial changes in RNA regulation or metabolism.

What the partial-gravity experiment shows
Microgravity and Earth gravity are not the only useful comparison points. A NASA Open Data dataset grew Arabidopsis for six days at microgravity, several intermediate partial-gravity levels and 1g. Blue light was applied during the final 48 hours. Researchers extracted RNA from 20 samples and evaluated differential expression with the HISAT2–StringTie–DESeq pipeline, followed by gene-network and Gene Ontology analyses.
The design separates gravity intensity from a simple yes-or-no spaceflight comparison. If a response changes progressively across microgravity, partial gravity and 1g, that pattern supports a gravity-dependent effect. If it appears only in one condition, other factors or threshold-like biology may be involved. The blue-light period is important because light is itself a directional and developmental signal; it provides a defined context for interpreting the final part of the exposure.

Why results differ between experiments
It is misleading to treat “spaceflight” as one uniform treatment. When two studies report different plant responses, check the variables below before concluding that one result contradicts the other:
- Gravity level: true microgravity, a particular partial-gravity level or a 1g control can produce different responses.
- Tissue: roots, hypocotyls and shoots have different developmental programs.
- Genotype: a wild-type plant and an engineered line may respond differently.
- Exposure duration: early signaling can differ from changes that appear after days of growth.
- Light regime: direction, intensity, spectrum and timing can interact with gravity cues.
- Growth hardware and controls: airflow, nutrient delivery, moisture and mechanical constraints must be matched as closely as practical.
- Measurement layer: morphology, transcriptome, translatome, proteome and metabolome results answer different questions.
These variables explain why no universal growth percentage can be assigned to “plants in microgravity.” The NASA overview pages cited for these investigations do not report a single cross-study reduction or increase that applies to every species and setup.
Are plants stressed in microgravity?
They can activate stress- and adaptation-related programs, but microgravity is only one component of the spaceflight environment. Light, airflow, nutrient delivery, radiation and confinement can all affect growth and gene regulation. Well-designed experiments use Earth-based controls and, where possible, hardware controls to separate gravity effects from those other influences.

A cautious interpretation is therefore: microgravity changes the signals and mechanical conditions under which plants develop, and plants respond through coordinated changes in growth, gene regulation, RNA processing, proteins and metabolism. The size and direction of each change depend on the experiment.
Can plants grow food and produce oxygen on the International Space Station?
NASA links this research to future life-support systems for long-duration missions. Plants could contribute fresh food and oxygen, but achieving that goal requires reliable growth across the entire plant life cycle, predictable reproduction, efficient resource use and hardware that controls light, water, airflow and nutrients. A molecular response observed in Arabidopsis is useful for designing those systems, yet it is not a guarantee that every food crop will behave the same way.
Arabidopsis is a model plant with extensive genomic tools, which is why it appears in TAGES-ISA, APEX-07, Plant Habitat-01 and the partial-gravity dataset. Results from this model help identify mechanisms and candidate pathways; they should not be presented as a universal percentage for wheat, lettuce, tomatoes or other crops without crop-specific evidence.

How to read a claim about “plants in zero gravity”
- Check the gravity condition. Determine whether the study used microgravity, a defined partial-g level or a 1g control.
- Identify the tissue. A root transcript result does not automatically describe the shoot or the whole plant.
- Separate DNA from expression. Ask whether the measurement concerns sequence, RNA, translation, protein abundance or protein modification.
- Record the exposure and light schedule. Duration and light can change both development and gene activity.
- Look for the control design. Hardware, airflow, nutrients and moisture should be considered alongside gravity.
- Connect molecular and visible results. A gene-expression difference is strongest when it is interpreted with morphology, photosynthesis, metabolism or cell-wall data.
What readers should conclude
Microgravity primarily removes a directional cue and reshapes the regulatory context in which plants grow. Roots and shoots can orient differently; cell-wall remodeling and development can change; and gene activity is remodeled at transcriptional, post-transcriptional and protein levels. NASA’s experiments deliberately compare gravity levels, tissues and measurement layers because the response is conditional rather than universal. The practical promise is significant—plants may help supply food and oxygen in long missions—but translating Arabidopsis findings into dependable crops requires crop-specific testing under controlled spaceflight conditions.
