Metal is Apple’s graphics and compute framework: software that lets apps use a Mac’s GPU to render images and perform parallel calculations. It is not a Mac component or a separate product. A Mac that supports Metal does not necessarily support every Metal feature, so compatibility depends on the specific GPU, the Metal software version, macOS, and the app.
What Metal does on a Mac
Apple describes Metal as giving an app direct access to a device’s graphics processing unit (GPU). Apps can use it to draw and process graphics, as well as perform parallel computation. Apple lists games, video processing, and scientific workloads among its uses. Apple’s Metal overview explains the framework and its capabilities.
Metal is an application programming interface (API) and framework, not a graphics card, Mac model, or standalone app. Developers build Metal support into their software so it can use GPU capabilities.
Metal and related Apple frameworks
Metal is the underlying GPU framework; related tools serve more focused purposes:

These names are related, but they do not mean the same thing. An app’s use of one of these technologies depends on what its developers implement.
Why Metal support varies between Macs
Metal support is not a single yes-or-no promise about every GPU feature. Apple groups GPUs into families with different capabilities, and the GPU in a Mac determines which features may be available. The macOS version and Metal software version matter as well. Apple puts it plainly: “The version of Metal running on the system and the GPU you’re targeting determine which features are available.” See Apple’s feature-detection guidance.

For an app developer, this means checking the actual GPU’s capabilities and choosing a suitable rendering or compute path. Apple’s API includes supportsFamily(_:) for querying whether a device supports a GPU family. An app may therefore work differently across Macs even when both can run Metal-based software.

How to check whether a Mac meets an app’s Metal requirement
- Find the app’s precise requirement. Look for the named Metal feature, GPU family, macOS version, or other capability the app specifies. “Requires Metal” alone may not describe all feature requirements.
- Identify the Mac’s GPU. Use the Mac’s system information or the specifications for its exact model to determine which GPU it has. Do not rely only on whether the Mac uses Apple silicon or Intel; Apple’s reference also covers Intel and AMD Mac GPUs.
- Compare the GPU and software support. Check Apple’s Metal Feature Set Tables for the relevant GPU family and feature set. The reviewed table is dated February 5, 2026; consult the current version when making a present-day compatibility decision.
- Confirm app-specific compatibility. Check the app developer’s requirements or support information. A general ability to run Metal apps does not guarantee that a particular app, feature, or performance level is supported.
For software that can query the device at runtime, Apple’s GPU-family reference describes selecting behavior based on supported features. That runtime check is more precise than a broad rule based on the Mac’s release era.

What “Metal required” does—and does not—tell you
- It does tell you that the app relies on Apple’s GPU framework for at least some functionality.
- It does not tell you that all Metal-capable Macs support the same feature set.
- It does not establish that two compatible Macs will deliver identical graphics, behavior, or performance.
- It does not identify which GPU family or Metal feature the app needs unless the app’s own requirements provide that detail.
When a requirement is vague, the app developer’s compatibility information is the deciding source for that app. Apple’s archived Metal Programming Guide offers background on GPU rendering and data-parallel computation, but current feature compatibility is better checked in Apple’s current references.
