There is no universally best lunar-dust material. The most credible options fall into three groups: statically dissipative coatings and films that limit charge buildup, low-adhesion materials and microstructured surfaces that make particles less likely to stick, and active systems such as electrodynamic dust shields that remove particles after they arrive. NASA evaluates these approaches for specific surfaces and mission environments rather than endorsing one coating for every vehicle, suit, window, radiator or mechanism.
That distinction matters because lunar dust is both mechanically abrasive and electrically troublesome. A treatment can reduce adhesion yet fail after sharp grains embed in it, or it can dissipate charge without preventing particles from settling in protected recesses. Selection therefore has to balance adhesion, charging, abrasion, thermal cycling, vacuum compatibility, mass, power and maintenance.
Adhesion and static charge are different problems
Lunar dust can remain on a surface for two related but distinct reasons. Electrostatic charging creates electric forces that attract particles and can make dust jump, migrate or cling after contact. Adhesion describes the mechanical and intermolecular forces that hold a grain to a surface, including van der Waals forces and physical interlocking in roughness or soft coatings.
A statically dissipative electrostatic-discharge (ESD) film is designed to bleed charge away. In a dry environment, less charge can mean less electrostatic attraction and therefore less dust accumulation, but that is a charge-control rationale, not a guarantee under every lunar condition. A low-adhesion or engineered-texture surface addresses the contact itself. The two strategies can be combined, but they should be tested separately so a favorable charging result is not mistaken for proof of long-term dust release.

The lunar environment also changes the engineering problem compared with ordinary terrestrial dust. Vacuum removes the moisture films that can dominate adhesion on Earth; particles are sharp, abrasive and fine; surfaces experience radiation and large thermal swings; and operations can repeatedly load and unload dust. NASA presentation material in 2025 notes that particles can reach velocities exceeding 1 km/h in some lunar transport contexts, including levitation, twilight craters and plume-surface interactions. That figure describes a hazard environment, not the performance of a particular material.
Passive materials and surface treatments
Passive approaches require no powered field during normal operation. Their value is low mass and low operational complexity, but every one is application-specific.
Stattically dissipative ESD coatings and films
ESD coatings and films use a controlled electrical path so charge does not remain concentrated on an otherwise insulating surface. NASA describes them as less likely to accumulate charge and consequently less likely to collect dust in dry environments. They are plausible candidates for panels, enclosures and other surfaces where electrical continuity can be designed into the structure.
Important limits remain. Dissipation performance depends on the complete stack-up: substrate, primer, film thickness, grounding path, seams and contamination. A coating that works on a conductive test coupon may not behave the same way on a flexible textile, an inflatable habitat layer or an optically coated window. High-voltage or poorly grounded systems can also create discharge risks for nearby electronics. ESD treatment should therefore be specified with a surface resistance or charge-decay requirement and verified after abrasion, thermal cycling and dust exposure, rather than treated as a generic anti-static finish.

Silicone
NASA’s Dust Busters material identifies silicone as a candidate that has been shown to reduce dust adhesion. Silicone can provide a relatively low-energy, compliant surface, which may make particles easier to release than from a harder, more adhesive substrate.
The same NASA guidance gives a critical warning: sharp dust can become embedded in silicone, and embedded grains can damage sensitive surfaces. That failure mode is especially serious around visors, optical windows, seals and moving interfaces. A silicone layer may reduce initial pickup yet become a source of abrasive contamination after repeated contact. Any silicone design should define an allowable embedment depth, inspectability and a replacement or cleaning plan.
Microstructured and biomimetic surfaces
Lotus-leaf-like microscopic or nanoscopic structures are intended to reduce real contact area and limit van der Waals adhesion. NASA lists biomimetic engineered surfaces among its active and passive development approaches. Surface geometry can be tailored to particle size, but the texture itself must survive abrasion and contamination.
Recommended Free Tools
A texture that performs well with clean, isolated grains may clog when exposed to a broad dust-size distribution. Peaks can wear down, valleys can trap particles, and a texture optimized for one material may be ineffective on another substrate. Qualification should measure both initial release force and retention after repeated dust loading, wiping or vibration.

Superhydrophobic, peel-away and gradient surfaces
NASA’s Dust Busters sheet also lists superhydrophobic coatings, peel-away coatings and gradient surfaces as concepts. Superhydrophobicity is associated with water-repellent behavior and reduction of capillary forces in water-based contamination. Because the lunar surface is effectively dry and exposed to vacuum, hydrophobicity alone should not be presented as a solution to lunar dust adhesion. It may be one property in a multilayer design, but lunar-relevant adhesion data are still required.
Peel-away layers offer a sacrificial strategy: a contaminated outer film can be removed to expose a cleaner surface. Their practicality depends on deployment hardware, seam protection, replacement mass and whether peeling itself releases dust toward a nearby sensor or seal. Gradient surfaces can direct particles toward a preferred edge or collection area, but they need a compatible removal mechanism and must not create a path into a mechanism.
Active systems that remove or neutralize dust
Active systems are not coatings. They add electrodes, power electronics, actuators or gas-handling hardware, but they can address dust after it has landed.

An electrodynamic dust shield (EDS) embeds electrodes beneath or within a surface. Changing high-voltage signals generate electric fields that lift and transport charged or polarizable particles away from the protected area. The system can be integrated into transparent or opaque surfaces, subject to electrode layout, optical requirements and insulation design.

NASA’s lunar-surface technology reporting says an EDS removed regolith from various surfaces during Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 in 2025. That is a mission demonstration, not a numerical ranking against every passive coating and not proof that one EDS design fits every surface. The same NASA page says EDS technology is licensed by multiple commercial partners, but the reviewed information does not establish a consumer product or a universal installation specification.
EDS requires electrical isolation, a reliable ground reference and controls that do not interfere with sensitive instruments. High-voltage insulation must be qualified for vacuum, radiation and thermal cycling. Electrodes also consume area and may affect transparency, flexibility or repairability. In return, an EDS can provide repeatable cleaning without a brush physically rubbing an optical surface.
Handheld ionization
NASA’s technology catalog describes a Lunar Electrostatics and Dust Mitigation tool as a handheld static ionizer intended to remove dust and neutralize electrostatic charge. It is listed at technology readiness level 4 (TRL 4), which indicates development-stage validation rather than routine operational availability. Such a tool could be useful for targeted maintenance, but its effectiveness, operator time, storage and plume direction would have to be evaluated for a specific mission.
Other powered or mechanical methods
NASA’s specification discusses brushes, direct-current electrostatic removal, vacuum, gas jets, spinning surfaces and vibration. Each trades simplicity against risk:

- Brushes: mechanically straightforward, but bristles or entrained grains can scratch critical surfaces.
- Direct-current electrostatic removal: can move charged particles, but requires careful grounding and discharge control.
- Vacuum: can capture loose dust where a sealed flow path and collector are feasible; pumps, filters and seals add mass and failure modes.
- Gas jets: can dislodge particles but require stored or generated gas and can redeposit dust elsewhere.
- Spinning surfaces: use centrifugal motion to shed particles, but need bearings, balance and a safe capture direction.
- Vibration: may release loosely held grains from panels, while risking fatigue or disturbance to instruments.
What NASA is actually testing
NASA’s Dust Mitigation Electrodynamic and Material Systems (DMEMS) work is testing samples for adhesion, abrasion, erosion, charge dissipation and thermal tolerance. The intended applications include spacesuit textiles, inflatable habitats, visors and windows. This breadth is a signal that performance is being judged by use case, not by a single material score.
A NASA specification seeks greater than 90% reduction relative to a reference surface, with 50% identified as the minimum, for lunar-dust-simulant particles smaller than 50 micrometers. This is a desired performance criterion in the specification, not a published result for a named silicone, ESD film, texture or other material. The reference surface, test sequence and durability conditioning must be read with the requirement before comparing a candidate to it.
Choosing an approach by surface and mission role
Start with the surface’s job, then choose the failure mode you can tolerate.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Surface or application | Most relevant concern | Candidate direction | Key qualification question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visors and windows | Optical loss and scratching | Low-adhesion texture, compatible ESD layer or integrated EDS | Does cleaning remove dust without abrasion, haze or electrical discharge? |
| Radiators and external panels | Thermal performance and large-area coverage | ESD film, textured coating or EDS panel | Does the treatment retain optical/thermal properties after dust, radiation and cycling? |
| Spacesuit textiles | Flexing, seam contamination and wearer exposure | Charge-dissipative textile treatment or engineered fiber surface | Does flexibility and repeated bending preserve charge decay and release behavior? |
| Seals and mechanisms | Particle intrusion and abrasive wear | Exposure avoidance, shielding and targeted removal | Can the design prevent particles from entering the contact line over its service life? |
| Inflatable habitats | Large flexible surfaces and repairability | Layered low-adhesion or dissipative outer skin, possibly sacrificial | Can the layer survive deployment, puncture repair and repeated dust loading? |
NASA frames the broad strategy as choosing whether to avoid exposure, remove dust or tolerate it. That decision involves required service life, dust effects, critical risks, mass and total system complexity. A short sortie may justify a replaceable or actively cleaned surface; a long-lived habitat may favor a durable passive layer plus localized active cleaning at high-consequence interfaces.
A practical qualification workflow
- Define the consequence. Record whether dust causes optical obscuration, thermal degradation, electrical leakage, seal wear, biological exposure or loss of mobility. Rank the consequence before selecting a material.
- Separate charge and adhesion requirements. Specify charge-decay or surface-resistance limits independently from particle-release or retained-mass limits. A candidate must pass both when both hazards matter.
- Choose the surface architecture. Decide whether the design will use a passive coating, a texture, a replaceable layer, an EDS or a combination. Include grounding, electrode routing and cleaning access at this stage.
- Test with lunar-relevant simulant. Use particles below 50 micrometers when assessing the NASA specification target, and document particle distribution, loading method, vacuum condition and reference surface.
- Run durability conditioning. Measure performance before and after abrasion, erosion, thermal cycling, radiation exposure where applicable, flexing for textiles and repeated dust loading.
- Inspect for secondary damage. Look for embedded sharp grains in compliant materials, scratches from cleaning, haze on optics, blocked textures, delamination, cracked electrodes and dust moved into seals or electronics.
- Verify system trades. Account for mass, power, high-voltage insulation, grounding, control electronics, replacement intervals, crew time and failure containment. A material that wins a coupon test can still lose at system level.
- Set an operational limit. Define when the surface is cleaned, replaced, isolated or declared unsafe. This prevents a gradual loss of performance from becoming an unplanned mission failure.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling any anti-static product lunar-ready: household sprays and generic silicone products are not established for lunar vacuum, charging, radiation, abrasion or thermal cycling.
- Equating water repellency with dust release: superhydrophobic behavior addresses water-related capillary effects and does not by itself establish low adhesion in lunar conditions.
- Using a soft coating near optics without an embedment plan: silicone and other compliant layers can retain sharp grains that later abrade sensitive surfaces.
- Comparing percentages from different tests: removal percentage is meaningful only with the same simulant, particle-size range, reference surface, environment and conditioning.
- Ignoring where the dust goes: an active system that clears a window but deposits grains in a seal, bearing or sensor may exchange one failure for another.
- Treating a demonstration as a universal qualification: the Blue Ghost Mission 1 EDS result shows flight-relevant capability on demonstrated surfaces; it does not publish a one-size-fits-all coating ranking.
Bottom line for material selection
Use a statically dissipative coating or film when charge accumulation is the dominant, measurable problem and the surface can provide a safe electrical path. Consider silicone or a microstructured/biomimetic surface when reducing contact adhesion is more important, but qualify abrasion and particle embedment explicitly. Use an EDS when the consequence of residual dust justifies added power, insulation and control complexity, particularly on surfaces that cannot tolerate brushing. For high-consequence interfaces, a layered design—exposure shielding, passive charge or adhesion control, and localized active removal—may be more robust than relying on one material.
No reviewed NASA source establishes a single best coating across lunar applications. The defensible choice is the material or system that meets the mission’s adhesion and charge requirements after realistic dust, abrasion, thermal and operational testing.
