Short answer: It depends on the model. RYOBI names wood and upholstery for the 18V ONE+ HP PBL324B, furniture upholstery, insulation, and chicken wire for the USB Lithium FVN51K, and wood plus fencing wire or wire screen for the 18V ONE+ P317. Those applications and fasteners are not interchangeable across the range.
Find the model number on the tool before choosing a material or staple. Then match the material to the manufacturer-stated use, load the exact fastener format and size, and test on scrap from the same material stack. No cited RYOBI page establishes one universal fabric thickness, substrate thickness, or material list for every Ryobi stapler.
Why the Ryobi model number matters
Ryobi staplers are a family of different tools rather than one standardized platform. The P317 is a 3/8-inch crown stapler with a screen-and-wire attachment. The FVN51K is a USB Lithium 4-in-1 craft stapler and nailer that accepts several staple formats and 5/8-inch brad nails. The PBL324B is an 18-gauge narrow-crown stapler in the 18V ONE+ HP line. Their stated jobs, fastener geometry, and adjustment features differ.
Use this table as a starting point, not as permission to substitute one model’s staples or applications for another’s.

| Model | Manufacturer-stated materials or applications | Fastener information | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| P317, 18V ONE+ 3/8-inch crown stapler | Wood; fencing wire or wire screen when used with the included accessory | 3/8-inch crown staples, 1/4 to 9/16 inch; compatible with Arrow T50 staples | The cited manual does not enumerate upholstery as an application. Its wire guidance is for fencing wire and screen, not electrical cable. |
| FVN51K, USB Lithium 4-in-1 craft stapler/nailer | Furniture upholstery, insulation, and chicken wire | Light-duty and heavy-duty staples, 1/4 to 9/16 inch; round-crown staples, 3/8 to 9/16 inch; 5/8-inch brad nails | These are example applications from the product listing, not approval for every fabric, insulation product, or wire gauge. |
| PBL324B, 18V ONE+ HP 18-gauge narrow-crown stapler | Wood and upholstery | Drives staples up to 1-1/2 inches; verify the required crown and leg specifications in the manual for the exact fastener | The surfaced product information does not give a universal fabric-thickness limit or a complete material chart. |
When a project falls outside those descriptions, treat compatibility as unconfirmed until the exact model manual and fastener specification say otherwise.
Wood: the clearest general-purpose material
What the P317 is documented to do
The P317 manual lists driving staples into wood. Its adjustable drive force lets you tune how aggressively the staple enters the work, which matters because softwood and hardwood resist penetration differently. The manual guidance surfaced for this model advises testing a staple in a scrap piece of the same material and increasing drive force for harder material. Verify the instruction in the official manual supplied for your tool before operating it.
For P317 work, use 3/8-inch crown staples in the stated 1/4-to-9/16-inch leg-length range. A staple that is too long can emerge from the back of a thin board; one that is too short may not hold. The crown must also match the tool and the job: the P317 is not a generic narrow-crown or upholstery-staple driver.

What the PBL324B adds
RYOBI describes the PBL324B as driving staples into materials such as wood. The page identifies it as an 18-gauge narrow-crown stapler and says it sinks staples up to 1-1/2 inches. That maximum is a tool specification, not a recommendation to use the longest staple in every board. Confirm crown width, leg length, and any approved staple series in the PBL324B manual before loading it.
How hardness changes the result
Stapling into a pine trim piece, plywood panel, and dense hardwood will not produce the same depth at the same setting. A proud crown can catch fabric or snag clothing; an over-driven crown can crush a surface or pull through a thin covering. Start at a conservative drive setting, make a test staple in hidden scrap, and adjust one increment at a time. If the staple bends, skews, or stops short, inspect the fastener specification and the material before simply increasing force.
Upholstery and fabric
FVN51K: the most explicit upholstery listing
The FVN51K product information says it is ideal for furniture upholstery. That makes it the clearest choice among the three cited models when the project is a chair, stool, panel, or other furniture covering. It accepts light-duty and heavy-duty staples from 1/4 to 9/16 inch, round-crown staples from 3/8 to 9/16 inch, and 5/8-inch brad nails. Select the staple category intended for the tool’s upholstery setup and the thickness of the fabric-and-substrate stack.

Furniture upholstery can include a woven cover, batting, foam, and a wood frame. The listing does not establish that every combination will feed, penetrate, or hold equally well. Test the actual layers, including the backing material, rather than testing fabric by itself.
PBL324B: upholstery is also named
RYOBI explicitly names upholstery alongside wood for the PBL324B. This supports using the tool for upholstery projects within its fastener requirements. It does not identify particular fabric types, foam densities, backing thicknesses, or a maximum upholstery stack. Those variables affect whether a staple seats cleanly and whether its legs reach the supporting wood.
Before beginning a visible edge, staple a hidden section. Check that the crown holds the fabric without cutting through it, that the legs do not protrude through the frame, and that the material is tensioned as intended. If the fabric tears, puckers, or pulls loose, stop and reassess the staple size, crown style, drive depth, and substrate.

What is not established about fabric thickness
The cited RYOBI pages do not provide a universal maximum upholstery-fabric thickness. Do not convert the PBL324B’s 1-1/2-inch staple-depth specification into a fabric limit, and do not assume that a 9/16-inch staple is suitable for every layered cover. The correct limit depends on the complete stack and the fastener selected for the model.
Insulation, chicken wire, fencing wire, and screen
FVN51K applications
RYOBI lists insulation and chicken wire as additional FVN51K applications. These descriptions identify intended project categories, but they do not cover every insulation product, coating, mesh opening, or wire gauge. Check that the chosen staple can pass through the material without crushing it and still seat in the supporting surface.

Why electrical cable is different
The P317 manual text warns against fastening electrical cables or wire. A staple can damage insulation, creating electric-shock or fire hazards. Fencing wire and screen are not substitutes for cable-safe fasteners, and a stapler intended for screen work should never be used to secure a powered or building electrical cable.
Fastener compatibility by model
Material choice is only half of the compatibility check. Staple crown style, leg length, and nail format must match the tool. The following values are the specifications stated in the cited product information.
| Model | Supported format | Stated size range | Selection note |
|---|---|---|---|
| P317 | 3/8-inch crown staple | 1/4 to 9/16 inch | RYOBI states compatibility with Arrow T50 staples. Use the screen/wire attachment only for the listed fencing-wire or wire-screen work. |
| FVN51K | Light-duty or heavy-duty staple | 1/4 to 9/16 inch | Choose the duty class that matches the material and confirm the package is intended for this tool. |
| FVN51K | Round-crown staple | 3/8 to 9/16 inch | Round-crown geometry is a separate format from the light-duty and heavy-duty staple options. |
| FVN51K | Brad nail | 5/8 inch | Use only when a nail, rather than a staple, is appropriate to the project. |
| PBL324B | Narrow-crown staple | Drives staples up to 1-1/2 inches; detailed crown and leg limits are not stated on the surfaced page | Read the exact PBL324B manual and fastener packaging before purchase or loading. |
Never infer compatibility from leg length alone. Two staples can share a length while differing in crown width, wire gauge, or magazine shape.

How to choose among the three models
- Start with the material. For furniture upholstery, the FVN51K and PBL324B are the models whose cited product information explicitly names upholstery. For wood, the P317 and PBL324B are explicitly documented. For fencing wire or screen, the P317 is the model with the stated accessory and manual instructions. For insulation or chicken wire, the FVN51K is the model whose listing names those uses.
- Match the fastener format. If your available staple is not the exact crown and size specified for the tool, do not load it just because it looks similar.
- Consider adjustment and guidance. The P317 manual discusses adjustable drive force and a screen/wire attachment. Those features are useful when material hardness or wire placement varies, but they do not expand the tool’s approved applications.
- Confirm the detailed manual requirements. The PBL324B page gives a maximum staple-driving length but not the complete fastener chart in the supplied material. Obtain that chart before buying a large quantity of staples.
- Test the complete project stack. A fabric, foam, batting, and wood assembly behaves differently from a single layer of cloth. Use hidden scrap or an offcut from the same project.
A safe, repeatable setup procedure
- Identify the model and read its manual. Record the model number, battery platform, approved staple or nail formats, and any accessory required for the job.
- Inspect the material. Remove loose debris, locate knots or hard inclusions in wood, and check that wire or mesh is supported. Do not staple into an electrical cable.
- Select the fastener. Match crown or nail format and leg length to the model. For the P317, stay within the stated 1/4-to-9/16-inch 3/8-inch crown range. For the FVN51K, select one of its listed staple categories or 5/8-inch brad nails. For the PBL324B, use the exact specification in its manual.
- Disconnect power for loading and adjustment. Remove the battery or follow the model’s prescribed isolation procedure before loading fasteners, clearing a jam, changing an attachment, or performing maintenance.
- Load the magazine correctly. Make sure the strip sits in the magazine in the orientation shown by the manual and that the magazine closes fully. Do not force a strip that does not fit.
- Set a conservative drive level. Where the model provides drive adjustment, begin low and increase only after a test staple shows insufficient penetration.
- Test on matching scrap. The test should reproduce the real material stack and support. Examine crown seating, backside penetration, holding power, and surface damage.
- Establish a consistent pattern. On upholstery, keep the fabric tension even and place staples where the frame can support them. On screen or wire, keep the mesh aligned and use the supplied P317 attachment as directed.
- Recheck the finished area. Look for proud, crushed, tilted, or exposed staples. Remove and replace defective fasteners rather than covering them with fabric or tape.
Drive-depth troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely checks | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Staple remains proud of the surface | Drive setting is too low; wood is unusually hard; fastener is outside the approved specification | Test a correctly specified staple, increase drive force only as the manual permits, and retest on matching scrap. |
| Staple sinks too deeply or cuts fabric | Drive setting is too high; material is thin or unsupported; staple is too long | Reduce force, shorten the leg length within the model’s range, or add proper support. Do not rely on the covering to hide a structural mistake. |
| Staple bends or exits at an angle | Staple format is wrong; the tool is tilted; the substrate contains a hard spot; the material is not held flat | Verify crown and leg specifications, hold the tool square, reposition away from a knot or obstruction, and repeat the scrap test. |
| Staple will not feed | Magazine is not fully closed; strip orientation is wrong; fastener shape does not match the magazine | Disconnect the battery, unload safely, compare the strip with the manual illustration, and reload only a listed fastener. |
| Wire or screen shifts during stapling | Material is unsupported or the P317 attachment is not installed as directed | Secure the material temporarily, fit the included attachment correctly, and test spacing on an offcut. |
| Fabric puckers or pulls loose | Uneven tension; staple spacing is unsuitable; fastener does not hold the frame | Remove the affected staples, smooth and retension the fabric, then test a different placement or approved leg length. |
Safety rules that apply to every model
- Wear the eye protection specified in the operator’s manual. A staple can ricochet or a broken fastener can become a projectile.
- Keep fingers and other body parts clear of the discharge area and the path of the staple or nail.
- Remove the battery or otherwise isolate the tool before loading, clearing jams, changing settings, installing an attachment, or carrying out maintenance, following the exact manual procedure.
- Use only fasteners listed for the model. A physically similar strip can jam the magazine or fire unpredictably.
- Do not staple electrical cables. The P317 warning identifies insulation damage as a possible source of shock or fire.
- Secure the workpiece and keep bystanders away from the discharge side, especially when working with wire, screen, or thin boards.
- Inspect the finished job by touch and sight for exposed points. Rework any staple that protrudes through the back or has not captured the material.
- Treat product-page application examples as boundaries for sensible use, not as a guarantee for every material thickness, density, or construction.
Common assumptions to avoid
- One Ryobi staple fits every Ryobi stapler. The P317’s 3/8-inch crown system, the FVN51K’s multiple staple categories, and the PBL324B’s narrow-crown requirements are different.
- Any model described as handling wood also handles upholstery. Upholstery is expressly named for the FVN51K and PBL324B, while the cited P317 manual lists wood and wire/screen work instead.
- A maximum staple length is a material-thickness rating. The PBL324B’s stated 1-1/2-inch driving capability does not define a safe thickness for every fabric-and-wood assembly.
- Chicken wire, fencing wire, screen, and electrical cable are equivalent. They are not. The P317 manual specifically warns against electrical cables.
- A successful test in bare fabric proves the finished upholstery will work. The backing, foam, batting, and frame determine the real penetration and holding result.
Bottom line
Choose by model, not by the Ryobi name alone. The FVN51K is the most directly specified option for furniture upholstery and also lists insulation and chicken wire. The PBL324B is explicitly described for wood and upholstery, with staples up to 1-1/2 inches but with detailed fastener requirements to confirm in its manual. The P317 is documented for wood and for fencing wire or wire screen with its accessory, and its manual does not establish upholstery use. In every case, load the exact approved fastener, test on matching scrap, adjust drive depth conservatively, and keep electrical cables out of the stapler’s applications.
