To 3D print liquid channels, you need a printer and material matched to the channel’s size and fluid, plus tubing connections, a way to flush internal passages, and a leak-test setup. Resin SLA or DLP is usually the practical starting point for enclosed channels below a few millimeters because it can reproduce finer features. FDM is useful for larger, inexpensive prototypes, but microscopic gaps between layers can let liquid seep through. No filament or resin is automatically safe for every chemical, temperature, pressure, food, potable-water, or biological application; verify the exact material and process documentation before use.
Start with the channel, liquid and operating conditions
Material selection is not a standalone decision. Define the channel geometry and operating envelope first:
- Smallest internal dimension: millimeter-scale passages are much easier to print and clean than sub-millimeter passages.
- Fluid chemistry: solvents, acids, bases, oils and biological media can attack different polymers or extract uncured ingredients.
- Temperature: a resin or filament that survives room-temperature water may soften, deform or lose strength when heated.
- Pressure and duty cycle: a channel that holds static liquid may fail under pumping, pressure pulses or repeated thermal cycling.
- Visibility and biological contact: clear material can help you observe flow, while biological work requires documentation for the exact resin, post-cure and exposure conditions.
Write these requirements down before modeling ports or buying consumables. The printer’s advertised resolution is not an operating specification for a finished, enclosed channel; orientation, layer height, resin, washing and geometry all change the result.

Choose a printing process
| Criterion | Resin SLA/DLP | FDM filament |
|---|---|---|
| Enclosed-channel detail | Suitable for finer passages when uncured resin can drain and be flushed; verify the specific printer and resin. | Better suited to larger, less demanding prototypes; small holes can close during deposition. |
| Leakage risk | Can produce watertight parts in suitable designs, but uncured resin trapped in channels and poorly sealed ports remain failure points. | Microscopic gaps between layers can allow seepage, especially in thin walls or under pressure. |
| Internal cleaning | Requires immediate solvent flushing, repeated washing and air clearing before curing. | No liquid resin to flush, but inaccessible support material, rough walls and layer gaps can complicate cleaning. |
| Optical inspection | Clear resins can make flow easier to see; clarity depends on resin and post-processing. | Transparent filament may still be hazy and can show layer lines. |
| Equipment and material access | Requires a compatible resin printer, wash equipment, IPA and appropriate protective handling. | Generally simpler and less expensive to start, with widely available filaments. |
| Pressure suitability | Must be demonstrated by testing the finished part, seals and fittings at the intended pressure. | Do not assume a coated or smoothed part is pressure-safe; test the actual assembly. |
Resin printing is the more plausible first choice for fine enclosed channels. FDM remains useful for manifolds, housings and proof-of-concept flow paths where channel dimensions are generous and low cost matters. Formlabs enclosure tests found selected SLA and SLS specimens performed better than its PLA FDM samples in water-submersion tests; those results apply only to the tested materials, geometries and method, not to every print.

Materials checklist
Resin for SLA or DLP
- General-purpose resin: adequate for dimensional prototypes only after you confirm chemical, temperature and pressure requirements.
- Clear resin: useful when observing bubbles, wetting or flow is important. A part can look clear while still having optical distortion or clouding after washing and curing.
- Biocompatible resin: use only when the manufacturer’s documentation covers the exact resin, post-cure, sterilization or exposure condition you need. A “biocompatible” category does not make every printed configuration suitable for cell contact, medical use or food contact.
- Temperature-resistant resin: select a formulation whose documented temperature capability exceeds your actual fluid temperature and safety margin. Formlabs lists High Temp Resin for elevated-temperature millifluidic work and BioMed Clear for biocompatible millifluidics in its workflow.
Record resin lot, printer, layer height, orientation, wash time and cure settings. Those details affect whether channels remain open and whether residual chemicals remain in the part.
FDM filament
PLA, PETG, ABS, nylon and other filaments can produce larger channels, but the polymer name alone does not establish chemical resistance or watertightness. Layer adhesion, extrusion width, wall count, infill, nozzle condition and print temperature determine how many paths a liquid can find through the part. Surface coatings or vapor smoothing may reduce seepage in some cases, but they are not a guarantee for pressurized channels and can alter dimensions or contaminate the fluid path.

Tubing, connectors and seals
- Select tubing for the fluid, temperature, flexibility and pressure.
- Choose barbed, push-to-connect, threaded or bonded fittings before finalizing port dimensions.
- Leave enough straight length and wall thickness around each port to resist cracking or pull-out.
- Use an O-ring or another documented seal where the connector design requires compression. An open-top port with a clamp and O-ring is one approach used in printed millifluidic assemblies.
How small can a printed channel be?
There is no universal minimum. Circular channels generally resolve more consistently than sharp-corner profiles because partially cured resin and layer stair-stepping are less likely to close the passage. Formlabs’ millifluidics tests compared 900, 700, 500 and 300 μm channels. In its Form 3/Form 4 workflow, a 50 μm layer height was recommended for channels down to 700 μm in most orientations; some optimized designs produced usable 500 μm channels. These are setup-specific observations, not limits that transfer automatically to another printer, resin, orientation or washing method.

Tools you need for resin-channel post-processing
- Syringe and connector tip: size the syringe and tip to mate securely with the printed ports without splitting them.
- Fresh isopropyl alcohol: the cited Formlabs procedure specifies 90% or higher IPA. Use fresh solvent rather than exhausted wash liquid.
- Wash container or approved wash station: the part must be washed without exposing the internal passage to premature curing light.
- Second syringe or compressed air: use it to remove wash fluid and loosened residue after solvent flushing.
- Protective equipment: follow the resin’s current safety data and handling directions for gloves, eye protection, ventilation and waste disposal.
- Inspection tools: bright illumination, a magnifier or microscope, calipers for ports and a small scale or camera can reveal blocked openings and dimensional drift.
During a print, resin can become trapped in small cavities, especially internal channels. Do not rely on a later cure cycle to clean the passage: light can harden residue in place.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Connect immediately: while the part is still uncured, attach a syringe filled with fresh IPA to one port and keep the opposite port open.
- Flush through the channel: push solvent until it exits visibly clear. Avoid excessive pressure that could split a thin wall or dislodge a fitting.
- Wash the exterior: place the part in fresh IPA for 10 minutes using the approved wash setup.
- Flush again: use a clean syringe. For channels narrower than 1 mm, the cited guide calls for at least 50 mL of IPA through the passages.
- Wash a second time: immerse for another 10 minutes in fresh IPA.
- Clear the solvent: use an empty syringe or compressed air until the channel is visibly free of liquid and residue.
- Inspect before curing: shine light through every opening and pass air or a compatible test liquid. If a passage is cloudy or blocked, resolve it now; early light exposure can seal it.
- Finish washing and curing: follow the exact resin’s prescribed cure schedule, then repeat a visual and dimensional inspection.
IPA flushing does not replace correct resin handling. Collect and dispose of contaminated solvent according to local rules, and never discharge uncured resin into a drain.

Model the real tube and connector, not an abstract hole. Check the tube’s outside diameter, insertion depth, barb dimensions, thread standard, minimum bend radius and the space needed for a clamp or wrench. Add fillets around ports to reduce stress concentration, and keep a straight sealing land where an O-ring will compress. Print a small port coupon first if the fitting is expensive or the tolerance is tight.

For removable lids or open-top channels, calculate the O-ring groove dimensions from the seal manufacturer’s cross-section and compression guidance. A seal that is too loose leaks; one that is over-compressed can extrude or make assembly impossible. Tighten clamps evenly and verify that the seal contacts a smooth, cured surface.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Watertightness and pressure testing
Test the completed channel, not just a material sample. Assemble the actual tubing, fittings and seals, then use the intended liquid or a compatible surrogate. Start below operating pressure, hold long enough to reveal slow seepage, and increase in controlled steps while observing ports, layer lines and broad faces. A pressure test should be performed behind suitable shielding with a relief path; never use your hand or face to search for a leak.
Formlabs reported average implosion pressures for selected enclosure samples: Nylon 12 GF Powder, 1,304 psi; Grey Resin, 1,672 psi; BioMed Amber Resin, 2,907 psi; Rigid 10K Resin unblasted, 5,626 psi; and Rigid 10K Resin media-blasted, 5,794 psi. The page did not state a publication year. These were specific enclosure geometries and test methods, not operating-pressure ratings for arbitrary liquid-channel prints. Do not convert them into a blanket pressure limit.
For low-pressure work, a dyed-water soak can reveal surface wetting. For a quantitative check, isolate the channel, apply a known pressure with a regulator, and monitor pressure decay with a gauge. Record temperature, hold time, fluid and assembly configuration so a later design change can be compared fairly.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Channel is closed after curing: trapped resin or premature light exposure is likely. Flush immediately after printing, increase the escape path and inspect before any cure step.
- Only one orientation works: gravity and layer stair-stepping affect openings. Reorient the part, enlarge the passage or add drain ports, then repeat a calibration coupon.
- FDM part seeps through its walls: increase wall count and extrusion quality for a prototype, but treat coatings as experimental and move to a more suitable process for pressure service.
- Leak occurs at a connector: measure the actual tube and fitting, correct the port tolerance, and add an O-ring or appropriate clamp rather than simply tightening harder.
- Flow is restricted despite an open outlet: roughness, partial blockage or a collapsed bend may be responsible. Flush in both directions, inspect with light and simplify the path.
- Fluid changes color or odor: stop use and investigate uncured resin, solvent residue, extractables and material compatibility. Do not infer safety from a successful leak test.
Application-specific selection guide
| Use case | Practical starting point | Critical verification |
|---|---|---|
| Visible flow demonstration | Clear SLA/DLP resin with round, generously sized channels. | Optical clarity after washing and curing; bubble removal and leakage. |
| Sub-millimeter research channel | Resin printer workflow validated with a calibration coupon; begin near the documented 700 μm reference rather than assuming 500 μm. | Open area, flushing volume, orientation and measured flow resistance. |
| Biological contact | Only an exact resin with documentation covering the intended contact and post-cure. | Extractables, sterilization, cure state and institutional safety requirements. |
| Elevated temperature | Temperature-rated resin or filament with margin above the process temperature. | Long-duration dimensional stability, seal temperature rating and pressure at temperature. |
| Large, inexpensive prototype | FDM with oversized channels and conservative pressure expectations. | Layer leakage, port strength and cleaning access. |
A practical first-build checklist
- Specify fluid, temperature, pressure, channel diameter and whether the fluid contacts people, cells or food.
- Select SLA/DLP or FDM based on the smallest feature and acceptable leakage risk.
- Choose an exact resin or filament whose documentation addresses chemistry and temperature.
- Model round channels, drain paths, inspection openings and real connector geometry.
- Print a coupon with several channel sizes and port tolerances.
- For resin, flush with fresh 90% or higher IPA immediately; wash, flush, wash and air-clear before curing.
- Inspect every passage and seal, then cure or finish according to the material instructions.
- Leak-test the assembled part at gradually increasing pressure and document the result.
- Only after those checks should you run the intended liquid, and never claim potable-water, food, medical or biological safety without evidence for the exact finished assembly.
The shortest path to a reliable liquid channel is conservative geometry, a process that can actually clear its internal passages, and testing of the complete printed assembly. Treat feature-size figures and enclosure pressure results as references for particular workflows, not universal specifications.
