Marvell makes semiconductor building blocks for AI data centers—not complete data centers or ordinary network equipment. Its portfolio combines optical and electrical interconnect silicon, Ethernet and PCIe/CXL switching, networking and security functions, memory and storage controllers, and customer-specific ASICs. The easiest way to understand the portfolio is by the distance each technology connects: scale-up links accelerators within a compute domain, scale-out links racks and domains inside one data center, and scale-across links separate sites over campus, metro, or regional distances.
What Marvell supplies to an AI data center
Marvell is a semiconductor supplier. Data-center operators, server manufacturers, system companies, module makers, and cloud providers can incorporate its chips, chiplets, optical engines, controllers, and custom designs into larger products. A Marvell component may be inside a cable, optical module, switch, accelerator platform, storage device, or security subsystem; it is not automatically a finished rack switch or a plug-and-play product for an individual buyer.
Marvell’s own portfolio and FY2026 Form 10-K describe several connected businesses:
Recommended Free Tools
- Interconnect: digital signal processors (DSPs), retimers, drivers, transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), optical engines, silicon-photonics technologies, and electrical-cable silicon.
- Switching: Ethernet switch silicon, PCIe and CXL switches, and technologies for memory pooling and fabric management.
- Custom silicon: customer-specific ASICs and chiplet-based systems co-designed around a particular workload and system architecture.
- Memory, storage, and security: SSD controllers, Fibre Channel and HDD controllers, storage accelerators, root-of-trust functions, key management, and cryptographic acceleration.
The company says its current offerings include custom ASICs, interconnects, Ethernet solutions, Fibre Channel adapters, processors, and storage controllers. The same filing distinguishes products still in development, including UALink switches and Ethernet for Scale-Up Networking (ESUN) switches. Treating every announced technology as a shipping product would therefore be misleading.

Three networking distances: scale-up, scale-out, and scale-across
Scale-up: connecting accelerators in one compute domain
Scale-up is the short-distance fabric that lets GPUs, AI accelerators, CPUs, and memory resources exchange data as a coordinated compute domain. Marvell describes it as “the connectivity that couples accelerators into a single compute domain within a rack today and, increasingly, across several.” This is a company description, not an independent performance assessment.
Scale-up links must move very large volumes of traffic with predictable latency and strong signal integrity. Technologies considered in this area include PCIe, UALink, ESUN, Ethernet, and NVLink-related approaches. Marvell’s material indicates that the industry has not settled on one universal scale-up protocol. The relevant decision depends on bandwidth, latency, openness, software support, interoperability, power, and whether a design is ready for deployment.
Scale-out: connecting racks and domains inside a data center
Scale-out networking joins many servers, accelerator trays, racks, and compute domains into a data-center cluster. It is the fabric used when a workload is distributed across machines rather than kept inside one server or rack.

Scale-across: linking separate data-center sites
Scale-across connects facilities over campus, metropolitan, or regional distances. It is used when capacity, disaster recovery, data locality, or geographic placement requires more than one data-center site.
Marvell’s scale-across portfolio includes coherent DSPs, coherent-lite DSPs, and COLORZ ZR/ZR+ pluggable modules. These technologies process optical signals so high-capacity links can travel substantially farther than ordinary in-rack electrical connections. Reach, line capacity, fiber route, optical power, and service-provider engineering all affect the practical result.
How Marvell’s interconnect components move data
Connectivity is a system of parts rather than a single “AI networking chip.” Electrical traces and copper cables lose signal quality as speed and distance rise; optical links require electrical-to-optical conversion, signal conditioning, and optical amplification or compensation. Marvell supplies several of the devices that perform those jobs.
| Component | Plain-language role | Typical place in the system |
|---|---|---|
| DSP | Processes and conditions a high-speed signal so the receiver can recover data over a lossy link. | PAM4 electrical/optical links, coherent links, and coherent-lite links. |
| Retimer | Receives, reconstructs, and retransmits a signal to restore timing and signal quality. | PCIe, multiprotocol, and other high-speed board or backplane connections. |
| Laser driver | Drives the optical laser that converts an electrical data stream into light. | Optical transceivers and optical engines. |
| TIA | Converts a photodiode’s very small current into a usable electrical signal. | Optical receivers and modules. |
| Optical engine | Combines optical transmit/receive functions with the electrical interface used by a host system. | Switches, accelerator systems, and co-packaged or pluggable optics. |
| AEC DSP or linear equalizer | Compensates for loss and distortion in an active copper cable. | Short, high-bandwidth links within racks or between nearby equipment. |
| Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics | Integrate optical functions more closely with electronic switching or compute silicon. | High-density switch and accelerator platforms where front-panel optics can become a constraint. |
“DSP” does not mean a generic software processor in this context. It is specialized signal-processing silicon tuned for a particular electrical or optical link. The correct choice depends on the signaling format, fiber or copper medium, distance, power budget, error requirements, and module design.

Switching silicon: directing traffic through the fabric
Teralynx Ethernet switches
Ethernet switch silicon examines packet headers and forwards traffic between ports. In an AI cluster, it can form the scale-out fabric connecting servers and accelerator systems. Marvell describes Teralynx as a family of Ethernet switch silicon for data-center networking. The silicon is normally embedded in a switch system with ports, optics, firmware, cooling, management, and a software stack; it is not itself a complete retail switch.
PCIe and CXL switching
PCIe switches expand and fan out peripheral connectivity, while CXL switches can connect processors to shared or pooled memory resources. Marvell’s portfolio includes PCIe/CXL switch products and Structera CXL switches for memory-pooling use cases. A CXL switch can be one part of a larger memory-composable architecture; it does not by itself guarantee that applications will see a single, uniform memory pool. Firmware, operating-system support, coherency rules, capacity, and workload behavior matter.
Telemetry and observability
Marvell identifies RELIANT as a telemetry platform for scale-out networking. Telemetry can expose congestion, queue behavior, link health, and other operating conditions so infrastructure software can diagnose or rebalance traffic. The useful result is operational visibility, not a replacement for switch configuration, capacity planning, or end-to-end monitoring.
What “custom silicon” means at Marvell
A merchant semiconductor is designed for use by a broad set of customers. A custom ASIC is co-designed around one customer’s requirements, system constraints, and workload strategy. Marvell says it combines its intellectual property and packaging capabilities with customer specifications to create these designs.

In its FY2026 Form 10-K, Marvell states: “We develop custom semiconductor solutions tailored to individual customer specifications that deliver system-level differentiation for next-generation artificial intelligence, data center, compute, networking, carrier, storage, aerospace and defense applications.” This describes the company’s business model; it does not identify a particular customer or prove deployment at scale.
IP blocks that can be combined
- High-speed SerDes: electrical transmit and receive circuits for chip-to-chip, board, backplane, and cable links.
- Arm compute subsystems: general-purpose processing resources for control, packet handling, or embedded workloads.
- Security: root of trust, key management, and cryptographic acceleration.
- Storage and networking: controllers and packet-processing functions matched to the system.
- Silicon photonics and die-to-die links: optical and short-reach interfaces for dense multi-chip designs.
- Chiplets, custom HBM, and advanced packaging: ways to combine specialized dies and high-bandwidth memory in one package or tightly integrated system.
Why a customer chooses a custom ASIC
Custom silicon can tune the balance among compute, memory bandwidth, I/O, security, power, package size, and software requirements. It can also differentiate a cloud or infrastructure provider’s architecture. The trade-off is substantial engineering effort, verification, mask and packaging cost, a longer schedule than buying a standard component, and dependence on a specific design’s volumes and supply chain. Marvell’s public descriptions establish the co-design capability, not the economics or schedule of any unnamed project.
Memory, storage, and security around the AI fabric
AI data centers need more than accelerator-to-accelerator links. Marvell’s broader infrastructure portfolio includes components that feed data to compute and protect it.
- Memory pooling: Structera CXL switches can be used in architectures that share or compose memory across hosts.
- SSD control: Bravera SSD controllers manage flash-storage devices and the translation, error correction, and interface functions required by an SSD.
- Fibre Channel: adapters and controllers connect servers to Fibre Channel storage networks where that protocol remains part of the environment.
- Hard-disk storage: HDD controllers and preamplifiers support magnetic storage systems, which can remain relevant for large-capacity data sets and archives.
- Storage acceleration: dedicated functions can reduce host-CPU work for data movement or storage processing.
- Security: root-of-trust components establish device identity and secure boot foundations; key-management and cryptographic acceleration functions protect data and communications.
These products support infrastructure that may serve AI, general cloud computing, enterprise storage, telecommunications, or other workloads. Their inclusion in Marvell’s portfolio does not mean every item is exclusive to AI data centers.

Current products versus technologies still being developed
Product maturity is an important qualification. Marvell’s FY2026 filing lists custom ASICs, interconnects, Ethernet solutions, Fibre Channel adapters, processors, and storage controllers among current offerings. It separately says the company is developing UALink switches and ESUN switches. Use “in development,” “announced,” or “under qualification” where that is the company’s status; do not turn a roadmap item into a generally available product.
Marvell also reports that it completed its previously announced acquisition of Celestial AI on February 2, 2026, adding Photonic Fabric technology. The filing says XConn extends the switch portfolio with PCIe and CXL switches. Those corporate developments expand the technologies Marvell can offer, but they do not establish that every resulting product is shipping in volume or available through a standard purchasing channel.
A dated example: COLORZ 1600 and 2nm coherent DSPs
In a March 5, 2026 announcement, Marvell introduced the COLORZ 1600 1.6T ZR/ZR+ pluggable, powered by the Electra 2nm coherent DSP, and Libra, a 2nm 800G coherent DSP. These are announced product developments and specifications from Marvell. Confirm commercial availability, qualification status, and supported module configurations before treating them as products that can be ordered for a live deployment.

There is no single winner for every AI infrastructure design. Compare alternatives against the actual link and workload rather than against a marketing category.
| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth | What aggregate throughput and port speed are required, and how much oversubscription is acceptable? | Training and inference traffic can create sustained east-west demand across many links. |
| Latency | Is the workload sensitive to switch hops, serialization, or memory-access delay? | Scale-up synchronization and pooled-memory access can react differently to added delay. |
| Openness | Can multiple vendors, operating systems, and accelerators interoperate? | An open ecosystem can reduce lock-in, while a tightly integrated design may optimize a particular platform. |
| Deployment readiness | Is the technology shipping, in qualification, or still in development? | Roadmap capability is not the same as a supported production system. |
| Reach and medium | Is the connection inside a package, across a rack, between racks, or between sites? | Electrical copper, active copper, multimode or single-mode fiber, and coherent optics have different distance and power trade-offs. |
| Power and thermals | What is the total link and switch power budget, including optics and cooling? | High-radix fabrics can be constrained by rack power and front-panel thermal density. |
| Software and operations | Are drivers, firmware, telemetry, orchestration, and troubleshooting tools ready for the target environment? | Operational complexity can erase theoretical hardware advantages. |
Marvell’s portfolio spans PCIe, UALink, ESUN, Ethernet, and NVLink-related approaches, but its materials do not establish one protocol as universally superior. A sound architecture review should document the required traffic pattern, failure domains, software stack, link distances, and qualification evidence.
How the pieces fit together in a real system
- Define the traffic domains. Separate accelerator-to-accelerator traffic inside a rack from rack-to-rack traffic and site-to-site traffic.
- Choose the electrical or optical medium. Use short-reach electrical, active copper, or optical links according to distance, bandwidth, loss, and power constraints.
- Select signal-conditioning silicon. Match DSPs, retimers, TIAs, drivers, and optical engines to the signaling format and module design.
- Build the switching layer. Integrate Ethernet, PCIe, or CXL switch silicon into a managed system with ports, firmware, cooling, and software.
- Plan memory and storage paths. Decide whether CXL pooling, local SSDs, Fibre Channel, HDD capacity, or storage acceleration is needed for the workload.
- Add security and telemetry. Establish device identity, secure boot, key management, cryptographic processing, and operational monitoring.
- Qualify the complete platform. Test interoperability, sustained traffic, thermal behavior, failover, firmware updates, and service procedures—not just an individual chip.
What Marvell is—and is not—for a buyer
Marvell is relevant when you are designing or sourcing data-center infrastructure, an accelerator platform, an optical module, a switch, a storage system, or a custom ASIC. The normal commercial path is business-to-business design engagement, component procurement, qualification, and integration.
It is not a reason to buy a generic Ethernet switch, fiber cable, or consumer networking accessory and expect a Marvell AI-data-center architecture. The available information does not establish a specific generally compatible retail product for this explanatory use case, and ordinary networking hardware cannot substitute for the optical, electrical, switching, packaging, software, and validation decisions described above.
