Microsoft Edge began a staged consumer transition away from Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions in August 2026. Microsoft says MV2 add-ons will be turned off by default gradually across browser channels, with the consumer transition targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Enterprise deprecation is expected to begin in early 2027. There is no single day on which every Edge extension stops working: timing depends on the Edge channel, rollout cohort, extension, and whether the browser is managed.
What is changing in Edge?
Browser extensions describe their capabilities through a manifest version. MV2 is the older extension platform; Manifest V3 (MV3) is its successor. Edge is moving users and developers to MV3 rather than maintaining MV2 indefinitely.
Microsoft describes MV3 as a more secure and performant foundation, with privacy, security, and performance improvements. Those are Microsoft’s stated reasons for the change, not an independent finding that every MV3 extension is faster or more private than every MV2 extension. Microsoft also says the migration reduces fragmentation for developers and improves privacy, security, and performance for end users.

The practical effect is that an MV2 extension you use today may show a deprecation warning, be disabled automatically, or be replaced in the store by an MV3 listing. A replacement listing is not proof that every feature behaves identically, so check the functions and permissions that matter to you.

When will Edge stop supporting Manifest V2?
Microsoft’s dates describe a phased rollout rather than a universal cutoff. Its technical timeline, updated September 15, 2026, records these milestones:

Because the rollout is staged, Microsoft has not published an exact Edge version in which every consumer MV2 extension will cease working. A Stable-channel user may therefore see a warning later than someone using a preview channel, and two extensions may not be disabled at the same time.
Will Edge disable my extensions?
Possibly. Microsoft says users will receive notices and that MV2 extensions will gradually be turned off by default. Notices can appear in edge://extensions and on Edge Add-ons product pages. Where Microsoft identifies a recommended MV3 version, the notice can direct you to it.
“Over the next few months, MV2 extensions will be gradually turned off by default,” the Microsoft Edge Team wrote in its August 7, 2026 announcement. “By default” matters: the browser’s behavior can differ on a managed device or under an applicable policy, and the rollout is not an instantaneous block for every profile.

How to check your current extensions
- Open Microsoft Edge and enter
edge://extensionsin the address bar. - Read each extension’s warning or status text. Note the extension name, publisher, version, and whether Edge identifies it as MV2.
- Select Details and review the permissions and site access before changing anything.
- Open the extension’s Edge Add-ons page, or the developer’s current information, to look for an MV3 edition and its release notes.
- Record settings you may need to recreate, such as allowlists, custom filters, keyboard shortcuts, or site-specific rules.
Take screenshots or export settings when an extension supports that function before removing it. Edge’s warning indicates platform status; it does not certify that a suggested replacement has identical behavior.
How widespread are MV3 replacements?
Microsoft reported in August 2026 that 95% of the top MV2 extensions on the Edge Add-ons website had moved to MV3. It also said 58 MV2-based extensions had meaningful usage and that only three of those 58 lacked a publicly available MV3-based extension at the time of the announcement.
Those figures are Microsoft’s dated snapshot of the Edge Add-ons ecosystem. They do not count every extension loaded from another source, and they do not establish feature parity. An extension can have an MV3 listing while omitting an advanced function, changing its settings model, or requesting different permissions. Microsoft said the vast majority across extension types transitioned with no loss of customer functionality, but that broad statement is not a guarantee for every individual extension.
What can I use instead of uBlock Origin?
There is no Microsoft-published, one-for-one replacement guarantee for a named content blocker. If an MV2 blocker is affected, look for an MV3 content-blocking extension in Edge Add-ons and, if necessary, a compatible listing in the Chrome Web Store. Then verify the exact capabilities you depend on rather than choosing solely by name or install count.

Compare a candidate on these axes
- Required functions: Confirm that it supports the type of blocking you use, such as network-request filtering, cosmetic page filtering, custom rules, allowlists, or per-site controls. Do not assume that a similarly named product implements all of them.
- Manifest and availability: Check that the listing is actually MV3 and that it is available for your Edge version and region.
- Permissions: Read the installation prompt and the listing’s permission explanation. Broad access to browsing data or all websites deserves particular scrutiny.
- Maintenance: Check the developer, latest release date, changelog, and responses to recent issue reports. Maintenance information is extension-specific and is not established by the MV3 label itself.
- Managed-device fit: If your browser is controlled by an employer or school, confirm that the extension can be approved, force-installed, or otherwise used under your organization’s policies.
Install only after comparing those points. Microsoft Support documents adding extensions from Edge Add-ons and using compatible extensions from the Chrome Web Store; store availability alone does not verify quality, suitability, or feature equivalence.
How to install and validate an MV3 replacement
- Open Microsoft Edge Add-ons and search for the extension’s function, or use the Chrome Web Store if the developer provides a compatible listing.
- Open the full listing. Confirm the publisher, supported browser information, manifest version when shown, update history, and requested permissions.
- Compare the candidate’s feature list with your saved requirements. Test critical sites in a separate Edge profile first when practical.
- Select Get or Add to Chrome, review the permissions prompt, and choose Add extension only if the access is acceptable. The exact button wording can vary by store.
- Recreate settings and allowlists, then test the functions that would affect your work: blocked requests, page elements, login flows, downloads, or keyboard shortcuts.
- Keep the old extension disabled rather than deleting it until you have confirmed that the replacement works and you have copied any settings you need.
If no suitable MV3 listing exists, contact the developer through the current listing or support channel. Do not install an unrelated extension merely because Edge recommends it; recommendation means Microsoft has identified an available option, not that it matches your workflow.
What Edge policy options exist on managed devices?
Organizations using Windows or macOS Edge version 123 or later can configure the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy. Microsoft’s documentation lists four values:

The policy applies to Windows and macOS documentation, not Android or iOS. It is a transition control, not a promise of indefinite consumer support. Administrators should test the setting against the Edge versions actually deployed, coordinate with extension owners, and follow current enterprise guidance before depending on it for a business-critical workflow.

Questions for an administrator
- Is the browser enrolled in management, and which Edge channel and version are deployed?
- Which extensions are force-installed, and which are user-installed?
- Does the replacement support required data handling, sign-in, and site permissions?
- Who owns testing and rollback if an MV3 migration breaks a business process?
- Is the policy documented in the organization’s change-control system, rather than set only on one workstation?
What to do when an MV2 extension stops working
Edge shows a deprecation notice but the extension still runs
Use the warning period to inventory settings and test an MV3 candidate. Do not wait for the final disablement to discover that a custom filter list, shortcut, or enterprise allowlist was not portable.
The extension is disabled and Edge recommends another listing
Open the recommendation, inspect its permissions and feature list, and test it with the sites or applications you rely on. If a required capability is missing, check the original developer’s current documentation for an alternate MV3 release rather than assuming the recommended item is equivalent.
No replacement is listed
Search both Edge Add-ons and the Chrome Web Store, then verify that the result is compatible with Edge and maintained. Microsoft said only three of the 58 meaningfully used MV2 extensions it identified lacked a publicly available MV3-based extension at announcement time, but that statistic cannot establish availability for every extension or every source.

Compare permissions, site-access scope, filter syntax, and settings. MV3 may impose different technical limits, and a developer may have redesigned features during migration. Keep a written list of the behavior you need and report missing functions to the developer with a reproducible example.

A work or school browser blocks the replacement
Contact the administrator rather than changing policy locally. Managed devices follow organizational controls, and an individually installed extension may be removed or violate security requirements. Ask whether an approved MV3 package or a force-installed alternative is available.
What Edge users should expect next
Consumer users should treat the rest of 2026 as a migration period: notices, store changes, and default disabling can arrive at different times across Canary, Dev, Beta, and Stable. The lack of a single cutoff date is not evidence that MV2 support is permanent. Enterprise users should expect a separate phase beginning in early 2027 and should plan testing with administrators and extension developers.
The safest approach is to identify every MV2 dependency now, preserve its settings, evaluate an MV3 candidate against concrete requirements, and keep a fallback workflow for any feature that has no verified equivalent. This avoids confusing a store listing or a recommendation with proof that your particular extension behavior will remain unchanged.
