The collectible is an 8-inch Mego World’s Greatest Super-Heroes Spider-Man figure. Its reported rarity comes from a particular card-and-artwork combination—especially the 1978 U.S. card showing a crouching Hulk in purple pants—not from a special Hulk accessory or a different Spider-Man sculpt. ComicBook.com reported in October 2026 that only three graded examples of that specific variant were known, but no verified production total or complete surviving-population census has been established.
What collectors mean by a “rare Mego Spider-Man”
Mego Spider-Man figures were not a single, unchanging release. Mego Museum dates the character’s debut to fall 1973 and records production continuing through 1982. During that long run, Mego changed factories, printing, packaging and details on the figure itself. Those changes created a large family of related releases rather than one uniform product.
The item at the center of the recent rarity story is an 8-inch Spider-Man sealed to a particular card. The Spider-Man figure is the subject of the collectible. The Hulk connection is on the packaging: Marvel’s changing Hulk style guide led to different Hulk illustrations on card backs. A card can therefore be scarce even when the figure mounted on it is otherwise familiar.
It is not a Spider-Man/Hulk two-pack
The reported 1978 example should not be described as a Spider-Man figure with a Hulk accessory. The evidence concerns the printed card artwork and the exact card-and-figure pairing. A loose Spider-Man, or the same figure on a different card, is a different collectible for identification purposes.

Why Hulk artwork changed the Spider-Man package
Marvel revised the way Hulk was drawn during the period when Mego was selling its super-hero figures. ComicBook.com’s October 2026 account says those design changes prompted Mego to alter card-back character images in 1975, 1978 and 1979. The 1978 Spider-Man card discussed in that report shows a crouching Hulk wearing purple pants.
That explanation describes packaging history, not a surviving factory memo or a documented production count. It does, however, explain why a Spider-Man package can be identified through Hulk artwork. The image is a snapshot of which Marvel style was being used when that card was printed.
The Mego Spider-Man card timeline
| Release or variant | Documented date | What distinguishes it | How it relates to the rarity question |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Spider-Man card | 1975 | Early dated U.S. card in the Mego Museum gallery; front artwork matches the later dated U.S. card. | Shows that date and card printing matter when separating otherwise similar packages. |
| U.S. Spider-Man card | 1978 | Same front artwork as the 1975 U.S. card apart from the printed date; the reported rare example is associated with card-back Hulk artwork showing a crouched figure in purple pants. | This is the specific card-and-figure combination linked to the “three graded examples” report. |
| Parkdale Novelty Spider-Man/Hulk card | 1979 | A separate card variant that shows only Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk on the front. | It is not interchangeable with the reported 1978 U.S. card. |
| Circle Suit Spider-Man | Early production, date not stated | An early silk-screen attempt left a circle-style variation in the Spider-Man logo; Mego Museum says it was quickly corrected. | Illustrates that figure details, not just card printing, can define a variant. |
The 1975 and 1978 U.S. cards can look almost identical from the front because the principal visible change is the date. The 1979 Parkdale card belongs in a separate line of identification: its distributor or regional presentation and its front layout should not be used as evidence for a 1978 U.S. example.

How to identify the reported 1978 example
Use the package as a set of checkpoints rather than relying on a seller’s title or a photograph of the figure alone.

- Confirm the figure format. Look for the 8-inch Mego World’s Greatest Super-Heroes Spider-Man, not a 12-inch figure or a loose figure described only as “vintage Mego.”
- Read the printed card date. A 1978 date is essential to the reported U.S. variant. Do not infer the date from the figure’s costume or from an undated online listing.
- Inspect the back artwork. The reported card uses a crouching Hulk in purple pants. Photograph the entire back so the pose, colors and surrounding character layout can be checked.
- Check the front layout. The 1975 and 1978 U.S. cards share front artwork apart from the date. A front that instead shows only Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk may indicate the separately documented 1979 Parkdale card.
- Record regional or distributor wording. Note any Parkdale Novelty or other regional identification. Distributor information can separate cards that sellers have casually grouped together.
- Compare the figure and package together. Verify that the Spider-Man is still sealed to the card and that the card belongs with that figure, rather than being a replacement card or a loose figure later mounted for display.
- Document condition and grading. Photograph the bubble, card edges, date, artwork and any grading label before comparing the item with population claims or sales.
What “only three graded versions” actually means
ComicBook.com reported in October 2026 that the specific 1978 example had only three graded examples of its kind. That is a claim about examples submitted to a third-party grading service and recognized as the same variant. It is not a factory production figure.
No reviewed collector record establishes how many cards Mego printed, how many ungraded examples survive, or a complete census covering every grading company. A three-piece graded population can coexist with additional ungraded packages, damaged examples, misidentified cards and pieces held in collections that have never been submitted for grading. The most accurate wording is therefore “three graded examples reported by ComicBook.com,” not “only three exist.”
Condition can make an uncommon card look even rarer
For a carded figure, scarcity and desirability are separate questions. Two examples can carry the same date and artwork while differing substantially in collectibility because of preservation.

- Bubble condition: Check for cracks, yellowing, lifting, dents and repairs. A sealed bubble that remains firmly attached preserves more original packaging evidence.
- Figure completeness: Confirm that the Spider-Man has the expected costume components and that no accessory has been substituted. A card does not prove that every figure detail is original.
- Print clarity: The date, Hulk pose and colors should be legible. Fading or reproduction printing can complicate variant identification.
- Professional grade: Record the grading company, grade and label description. A grade is an assessment of that submitted item, not a census of all survivors.
- Provenance and alterations: Ask whether the card, bubble or figure has been restored, resealed or transferred. Alterations should be disclosed before a comparison with an untouched example.
What is known about value—and what is not
No current market value for the exact 8-inch carded variant was established. A price cannot be responsibly inferred from the phrase “three graded examples” alone because condition, grade, card integrity and buyer demand can differ dramatically.

Heritage Auctions’ catalog entry considered in connection with this subject describes different, larger 12-inch Spider-Man and Hulk figures from 1977–78. Those pieces are not comparable sales for an 8-inch Spider-Man on the reported card. Treating their results as a valuation for this item would mix different sizes and products.
Mego Museum’s collector FAQ points readers toward reference books and advises comparing more than one price guide. For a serious valuation, assemble the exact card date, artwork, distributor identification, grade and condition, then compare completed sales of the same combination. Asking prices for a visually similar but different card should be labeled as non-comparable rather than used as a substitute.
How the Hulk’s own Mego presence fits the story
Hulk matters because he was one of the Marvel characters represented in the same packaging program and because Marvel’s approved appearance for him changed over time. His image could therefore change on a Spider-Man card even though the product inside remained a Spider-Man figure.

Common identification mistakes
Calling every Hulk-backed Spider-Man a 1978 rarity
Different years and card programs used Hulk imagery. Require the printed date and the complete artwork before assigning the 1978 label.
Counting the figure instead of the package
A loose Spider-Man may share the same sculpt or costume as a carded example but does not carry the scarce card combination. Photographing only the figure leaves out the evidence that defines this variant.
Using a 1979 Parkdale card as a substitute
The Parkdale Novelty card is documented separately and dated 1979. Its Spider-Man-and-Hulk front should be recorded as its own release rather than folded into the reported U.S. 1978 population.
Turning a graded count into a survival count
Grading records cover submissions, not every item made or saved. Keep the “three graded” statement attributed to ComicBook.com and avoid claiming that three total examples exist.

Borrowing prices from larger figures
Results for 12-inch Mego Marvel figures do not establish a price for this 8-inch carded Spider-Man. Match size, card, condition and grade before drawing a market comparison.
A practical collector’s record sheet
When examining an example, record these fields in one entry:
- Figure size and line: 8-inch World’s Greatest Super-Heroes Spider-Man.
- Printed card date and every visible copyright or distributor marking.
- Front artwork description, including whether the Incredible Hulk appears.
- Back artwork description, including Hulk pose, pants color and surrounding characters.
- Card, bubble and figure condition, with photographs of all sides.
- Whether the package is sealed, loose, resealed or restored.
- Third-party grading company, grade and exact label wording, if any.
- Sale date and evidence when comparing a completed transaction.
This record prevents a visually similar 1975, 1978 or 1979 package from being treated as the same item and gives future buyers enough information to evaluate the claim independently.
The clearest conclusion
The Mego Spider-Man figure is considered rare because collectors may be seeking a specific 1978 carded presentation whose Hulk back art reflects a short-lived point in Marvel’s changing character design. Mego Museum’s production history shows why multiple Spider-Man packages and figure variants exist, while ComicBook.com supplies the current report of three graded examples for the particular variant. That report signals scarcity in the graded population, but it does not establish a total production run, a complete census or a current price. Exact date, artwork, distributor identity, package integrity and comparable sales are the evidence needed to decide what an individual example is.
